As a life long summer vacationer in Wildwood, NJ, I was inspired by the “Mops for Christie” gofundme.com page published by Kiyle Osgood of Lambertville, NJ. Kiyle was taken back by Governor Chris Chrisite’s comment in regards to the recent winter storm surge flooding last weekend in Cape May County, NJ “There’s been one county that’s flooded in the state. One county, that was Cape May County. It’s the one county that flooded. So I don’t know where, from all over the state, since we have 21 counties where that’s happened. Second, I don’t know exactly what you expect me to do. You want me to go down there with a mop?

As the owner of an e-commerce janitorial supply company CleanItSupply.com and vacationer of the beautiful Wildwood beaches, I reached out to Kiyle on facebook and asked if we could provide $1,000. of mops and ship them to the Governor and then distribute the donated money raised via the “Mops for Christie” gofundme.com initiative to the recovery of the area. I’m confident North Wildwood’s Mayor Patrick Rosenello will find a way to put this to good use. I have family that resides in North Wildwood and surrounding Cape May County areas and I think it’s a good cause to help the homeowners and business clean up.

Then I read on http://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2016/01/26/gofundme-page-setup-to-send-mops-to-governor-christie/ for the the public apology, “Even if that was a reasonable solution to the shore damage that reminded some residents of what they experienced after Superstorm Sandy, where in the world would Christie get enough mops?” Well, do I have an answer for that. I can supply more mops then you could ever think about swinging. I’ve been in the commercial cleaning business my whole life and can assure you, one would be mopping for a very long time to clean up this storm flooding. In summary, we just want to do the right thing and try and assist the residents in North Wildwood.

The holidays are a joyous time with family and friends, but that seasonal glow can fade quickly when you’re faced with the aftermath: a house to clean up once all your guests have left. Getting your place back into shape can be a daunting task, but in similar fashion to our Thanksgiving clean-up tips we presented a month or two ago, we’ve got a few smart tips to help you do it in time for the new year.

Strip the Christmas tree carefully.
Use as much care taking your tree down as you did putting it up to save you some headaches next year. Some double-duty tips for packing ornaments:
– Keep Christmas lights from tangling by wrapping them around the empty paper towel tubes or tubes from your wrapping paper. Loop the cord around the roll, starting with the side opposite to the plug, then insert the plug into the tube’s opening. If you’ve already thrown away your gift wrap tubes, paper towel tubes work, too.
– Take down the ornaments and, instead of tossing them back into their boxes, wrap them safely. You can repurpose used wrapping and tissue paper (if you haven’t recycled it yet) to wrap around them as you store them neatly into their boxes. For added cushioning, place the tree skirt at the bottom of the storage box and layer the ornaments on top, using tissue paper between the layers.

Check your carpet and furniture for stains.
The longer they set, the more difficult they will be to remove. If you spot any, use a spray bottle to lightly apply a mixture of warm water and mild dishwashing liquid. Blot with a paper towel and continue spraying and blotting until the stain is removed. Rinse with clear water and blot again. Fluff the pile and allow it to dry. If all else fails, go in with a heavy duty carpet and upholstery spot cleaner.

Use this time to get rid of what you don’t need.
Did you get some great new gifts for your kitchen or other places in the house? That’s great! But you may not need two or three chip and dip sets in your cabinet. Either discard old ones or donate them. Have kids? Recruit them to help by creating a race to see who can gather their toys first. Store toys that are of no interest at the moment and rotate or bring them out every once in a while to keep their spark.

Disposing of the Christmas Tree
Many cities have posted pick-up times for Christmas trees, allowing you to put them out with the trash in the first few weeks of the new year. But if you miss your window or want put your tree to use around the yard, you can use the boughs as compost. Layered in with the rest of your compost, these branches are great spacers that allow air in, hastening the decomposition process. And the tree’s trunk, stripped bare and left to season for several months, will make great kindling for the fireplace next winter.

Keep Your Silverware Sparkling
For many people, the fancy silverware gets a lot of use in the month between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and then gets stashed away for the rest of the year. If you’re ready to pack up your finest flatware, but loathe the thought of having to polish it again next year, you’ll want to store in a tarnish-free fabric. Sold as individual pouches or bolts of cloth that you can cut to size, this cotton fabric is treated with a substance that keeps tarnish-causing gases at bay.

What post-Christmas clean-up tips can you add?

Houses, offices, vehicles, restaurants or cafes, paper towels today largely dominate every place. So, whether it’s cleaning a table or wiping your wet hands or even wrapping precious stones and jewelry, paper towels have become a necessity for people and a day without them is simply hard to remember. However, have you ever wondered that the commodity, which we use so frequently, how and from where did it originate? The first paper towel was invented by Arthur Scott from a bunch of rejected toilet papers. The invention of the paper towel showed the way out to the cloth towels, the main culprit for spreading and germs in the society. The main unique selling point of paper towels is that they are disposable in nature and therefore, there is no question of refuse or risk of spreading illness. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Check out more interesting facts below….

Interesting & Amazing Information About Paper Towels

Paper towels were first made by Arthur Scott. He perforated the toilet papers in small towel-size sheets and sold them. These towel-sized sheets became the first ever disposable paper towels.

After the success of the paper towels, Scott introduced paper kitchen towels in 1931. These were 13 inch wide and 18 inches long.

A paper towel is said to be made out of paper pulp, which gets extracted from wood or fiber crops.

One can use either the virgin or a recyclable paper pulp. Paper towel that is made out of recycled paper pulp is good not only because it lessens the power consumption by half, but also as it leads to fall in the number of trees being cut.

Paper towels are lightweight and made out of multiple layers for better absorption. The more the layers, the better the paper towel will absorb.

Normally, paper towels are made out of absorbent paper, which helps them to absorb more than a cloth. Since they are loosely woven, paper towels let the water travel between them, even against gravity.

Paper towels are classified based on their properties. They are distinguished and classified on lines of their strength, absorbency, weight and thickness. Colored paper towels are classified on whether they are for domestic or industrial use.

Paper towels are packed individually and sold as stacks, or held in a continuous roll. These paper towels are manufactured with two to three layers of thin paper, but some might have fewer layers.

Paper towels are at times bleached to give a whiter look. They are also some times adorned with flowers and other designs to appeal to the eyes and look good. The patterns and shapes on a paper towel are imprinted not only to make it look elegant, but also with the purpose of maximizing the absorption.

Colored paper towels were introduced to the market 30 years ago and were launched in two different classes – domestic and industrial.

The invention of paper towel and its wide availability and demand made it possible for most of the legislative bodies to create a law against the use of cloth towels, which spreads multiple maladies.

Have you ever found time in your busy schedule to clean your home and begun gathering up all of your needed supplies only to discover many of your items are nearly empty? Fear no longer! I have a few tips that you can use to help prevent making a quick dash to the store and wasting time set aside for cleaning.

• Buy in Bulk. When purchasing cleaning supplies, try shopping in bulk for your items. At CleanItSupply.com, we will regularly feature a bulk pricing discount on the same page as our single item prices, so that you can get the best bang for your buck. Purchasing two or more, five or more, or even ten or more of the same products at once will come in handy if you have a busy office or household and find yourself cleaning often.

• Store in Different Rooms. If you have more than one bathroom, buying spray bottles of bathroom cleaner in bulk will come in handy. Place the products you use to clean the bathrooms in each room to ensure that you will have the products on hand when needed. If you find yourself cleaning the children’s bathroom more often than the guest bathroom, you will keep better track of how much you’re actually using for each room. This will give you an idea of how often you need to replace the products and prevent you from running out of product halfway through your cleaning session.

• Create a Schedule. Do a quick gut check on all the cleaning supplies & products in your home. If some products are nearly empty, add them to your list of things to but the next time you’re shopping with us. If products are halfway empty, get started on your next list and make note that you may need to purchase more before running out.

• Read Directions. Be sure to check the back of all your cleaning supplies to identify directions and correct usage. Knowing how much you actually need from the product to get the task done will prevent you from over usage.

How do you keep track of replacing your favorite cleaning supplies?

Do you ever feel like you have more storage space in your home designated for kid items than for your own stuff? On a daily basis, you likely have to deal with regular child-related paraphernalia such as little shoes, heaps of toys, plastic cups, schoolwork and art supplies.

If you’re like most parents, you have the added burden of managing the stuff your kids are not yet using on a daily basis, like hand-me-downs you’ve received that are designated for future use, or items you’re saving for a younger child. I’m not going to lie. It can be very time consuming to properly care for and manage items you want to preserve until a child is old enough to use them. But the good news is that if you plan and invest a little time now, you can minimize both the time and space required to store your child’s items properly, and save money too. You’ll skip having to spend time down the road sorting through messy bins and boxes all filled with random gear, maximize the storage space available, and save money by not having to eventually buy replacement items for gear that got stained or moldy in storage. So what do I recommend doing now? Hitting up CleanItSupply.com for lots and lots of Rubbermaid storage totes. They are, what I consider, the best way to organize toys, books, baby gear and clothes for future use.

Step 1: Evaluate if a given item is worth keeping. Questions to ask yourself before deciding to keep a hand-me-down include: Does it have all of the parts/pieces? Is it safe or has it been recalled? If the sounds from the toy annoyed you before, do you really want to hear them again? Are the pages of the book falling out? Are the clothes stained and worn out? It may turn out that you don’t want to keep the item after all, and you’re better off donating it to charity.

Step 2: Launder or disinfect everything you decide to keep. Wash seat pads of swings, bouncy seats and high chairs with a disinfectant spray; wipe down any plastic or wooden parts, and wash all those too-small or too-big clothes. This probably seems like a step worth skipping since you’ll have to rewash the items when the next child is ready to use them. However, if there are any odors or stains on any of the gear, they will surface over time and may end up attracting bugs. (In general, if you are putting items into storage, you also should avoid using scented laundry detergents and fabric softeners when you’re giving items their final clean before storage, as the scent could attract bugs and potentially rodents).

Step 3: Remove any batteries. If the batteries corrode, the item may not work again.

Step 4: Sort items into categories so they are easier to find. For example, sort books into categories like board books, easy reader books and chapter books. Feeding items can be sorted by infant (think bottles, baby spoons, bottle warmer and breast pump) and toddler items (think small bowls, sippy cups and little forks). Clothes can be sorted by size and type of item. As I recommended a while back on my site, I suggest sorting by your child’s current size and the next size up together so your little one doesn’t miss out an opportunity to wear certain pieces of clothing. Then, once the clothes are sorted by size, sort the sizes by type of item.

Step 5: Group small parts within the categories together. Use Ziploc bags to group small pieces together (think bottle parts, hair accessories, Legos and Little People).

Step 6: Put the items in plastic bins with lids and label the bins. I suggest putting each category of items in its own Rubbermaid tote bin , or bins, though I will combine toys in the same bin if they are for the same age group. I like plastic bins better than cardboard boxes because, in my experience, the glue in cardboard can attract bugs, especially if you store the boxes in your attic, garage or basement (more on that below). I also don’t recommend using garbage bags because they are difficult to stack, trap in moisture and are easily invaded by bugs or rodents. If an item is too large to store in a bin, remove the parts that contain cloth or padded pieces (think swing and bouncy chair seats) and store those in a bin. Cover the rest of the item, like a baby swing, with a thin white sheet to protect it from dust (just drape the sheet over the item; no need to use tape). If you use plastic (like a garbage bag) to cover the item, moisture may build up on the item and lead to mold. You can usually find white sheets at the dollar store. Bed sheets are fine, and another option is to buy a large piece of white cotton fabric from a fabric store.

Step 7: Store the bins, Compactor bags and sheet-covered items. Ideally, you want to keep your items out of humid environments like an attic, garage or basement. Inside the house, the best storage locations are usually the back or top of a closet, under the bed or in the top of a cabinet. Sometimes, due to space restrictions, however, avoiding the attic, garage or basement isn’t possible. If these sorts of spaces are your only storage options, plastic bins should work just fine, but make sure not to store vacuum-sealed space bags like Compactor bags there. The vacuum seal prevents air from circulating, and the clothes will grow mold. If you are storing items in a garage, attic or basement, you’ll also want to make sure the storage bins are accessible and not buried behind other boxes, so you can easily add items to the bins as your child grows. Also, don’t store any food related items or teething toys in the attic. The extreme heat could cause the plastics to leach chemicals, making them unsafe for your child. Under beds, in closets or in the top of kitchen cabinets are better options for these types of items. There you have it – that’s my storage process. What do you think of it? What are your tips for organizing hand-me-downs and items for future use?

There is nothing quite as distressing as flushing your toilet and watching the water start to rise. A clogged toilet can cause a lot of damage, especially if it is not fixed quickly. There are many reasons why your toilet could be clogged. Small children have a tendency to flush things. Sometimes tree roots break through the pipes and cause clogs. Another reason why your toilet could be clogged is the toilet paper you use.

People tend to overlook their toilet paper as a clogging culprit. The truth is that while marketers have been doing a better job with promoting extra strong and soft toilet paper benefits, the same benefits that are a plus to you may be a minus to your pipes and sewer system. If you have older pipes, you may be even more at risk.

While some countries resort to not flushing anything, including toilet paper, that isn’t an option for us here in America. We like the convenience and cleanliness of flushing. So the key then becomes finding the best toilet paper available that gets the job done, and keeps your pipes and sewer system at minimal risk.

The ideal toilet paper is one that is soft to the touch, strong enough so it does not fall to pieces when you use it, and has a fast rate of dissolving. Today’s push for ultra soft toilet paper is attractive for our senses, yet is not the brand for you if you have finicky plumbing. Even though this toilet paper tested well in softness and strength, it does not dissolve fast.

Instead of battling with a plunger after every bathroom visit, spend a little time on the Internet and choose a toilet paper that fits your needs and is kind to your plumbing. Good Houskeeping ran tests on 22 different types of toilet paper, including one, two and three ply versions, and ranked them according to absorbency, softness, strength, and clogability. It’s a good place to start. We sell many brands at CleanItSupply.com, including store brands, and with so many available on the market, you are sure to find the perfect toilet paper for you.

If you’re a homeowner in a snowy climate, chances are good you rue the winter: All that snow has to go somewhere, and it’s not getting there itself.

Cue the snow shovel.

Barring a move to a snow-free state or barricading your family inside all winter, there’s no way to avoid the endless task of shoveling snow. There are, however, ways to make the process much easier. Here are three simple hacks to make the morning after a snowfall much less stressful.

1. Spray Your Shovel with Cooking Oil

Snow sticking to your shovel makes an already arduous task even more obnoxious. Avoid it with this hack: Lightly coat your shovel with non-stick cooking oil to make snow slide right off. No more time wasted removing snow from your snow remover. (You can substitute a spray lubricant like WD-40, but the downside is it’s toxic.)

2. Lay Out a Tarp Before the Snow

If you like short cuts, this technique, billed as “the laziest way imaginable” to clear snow, according to a tutorial from “Instructables,” has got your name on it. The day before an expected snowfall, lay a tarp on your walkway. When the snow finishes falling, just pull out the tarp, and voilà: an instantly cleared walkway. (Word to the wise: Make sure pedestrians won’t trip on your tarp; include a sign or use this technique in your backyard walkway if you’re concerned.)

The technique requires a tarp, firewood, and twine as well as some prep work. Pre-storm, use firewood to weigh down your tarp — you don’t want it flying away in the wind! — and tie the twine to both the tarp and to a shovel standing upright in your yard. You’ll use the shovel to pull out the snow-laden tarp.

Although this method might be faster than shoveling, it does require manpower. After all, a cubic foot of snow can weigh between 7 and 20 pounds. So don’t get too ambitious with the size of your tarp or you might not be able to pull it once it’s full of snow.

3. Make a Homemade De-icing Cocktail

De-icers make snow removal easier by cutting through the tough, icy layers that are a pain to remove with a shovel. But an easy solution should be easy on your property as well. Many commercial de-icers are pretty harsh.

Commercial ice-melting substances — magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, potassium chloride, and sodium chloride (salt) — all cause damage to the environment, according to the University of Maryland’s Home and Garden Information Center. They can also damage concrete sidewalks and driveways, which mean hefty repair costs later.

A better solution: Make your own de-icer using rubbing alcohol or vinegar. You’ll save money, too. Commercial melters typically cost $8 or more. Plus, you’ll avoid the hassle of trekking to the hardware store to stock up.

Use vinegar before a storm to make ice and snow removal easier:

Combine 3 parts vinegar to 1 part water.

Spray or pour gently (you still want to avoid runoff into your landscape) before a storm.

To keep the sidewalks and steps from icing after a storm:

Combine 2 parts rubbing alcohol with 1 part water.

Apply to minimize runoff.

Last week, I wrote a post about preventing that wet dog smell in your home. Today, I was thinking, “What about that tough to clean up pet hair?” So I decided to do some research and make a list of cleaning ideas for that stubborn dog or cat hair that you’ve been trying valiantly to clean up.

The best way to start is to aid in “Fluffy”s hair not falling out so much in the first place! Put 1 teaspoon of olive oil in you dogs food per day and believe me it helps the dog not shed so much.

A damp sponge (or sponge mop) also works great.

Use our vacuum on the lowest possible setting. If you have hardwood floors, this works quite well. Also, if you then use a Swiffer after vacuuming, it works well at picking up the residual fine hairs.

Use a small broom vacuum. It is very light weight and not cumbersome to drag out like a heavy conventional vacuum. They’re reasonably priced at around $25.00 – $40.00, and I recommend a cordless, rechargeable style for even more ease in quick cleaning. These vacuums do not replace regular rug vacuums, they don’t pick up heavier items, but have worked well and quickly with dog hair.

Here’s a trick I learned from a VERY old housekeeping book. Go outside and pick up some freshly mowed grass clippings or damp leaves (a couple of handfuls). Sprinkle them all over your kitchen floor. Then sweep. The dampness from the grass will stick to more dust and dog hair than sweeping alone, and it will show you very clearly where you missed. This also helps keep the dust from landing on the furniture to dust off later.

I also heard about someone who trains his dogs from puppy hood to accept being vacuumed — stop it at the source! Also, I have found that the rubber brooms that are being sold now really do work! The rubber doesn’t generate a lot of static electricity, so the hair rolls up almost like a piece of rope, and it doesn’t tend to drift the way it does when using an ordinary broom. Using the rubber broom for getting the pet hair off of upholstery and carpets is a good idea, too.

Also, try a Scotch-bright Lint Roller. Just gently roll the roller over the dogs coat and it picks up any loose hair.

Switching To Green Cleaning Supplies Could Improve Your Health

There was a time when people wouldn’t think twice about using household cleaning products containing toxic ingredients and chemicals to wipe down toilets, kitchen counters and floors throughout their home, to do the laundry, wash dishes and more. If it made things sparkle, shine and smell lemony fresh it was effective, right? Not always. As we’ve seen, many of those products with unfamiliar chemicals sometimes have negative effects on our health and people have started to seek out more natural cleaning products with ingredients you know like citrus oil, vinegar, beeswax, cleaning salt, coconut oil, baking soda and essential oils like lavender and rosemary. Many of these products are not only better for your health and safe to use around kids and pets, but they’re also environmentally friendly.

If you’re still using harmful products, now may be the time to start thinking about making a switch. Below you’ll find several reasons to dump your harsh chemical-filled cleaning products and start using safer alternatives.

Chemicals May be Unregulated
Every time you use a cleaning product, you could be ingesting fumes from the chemicals. Did you know that since World War II, 85,000 new chemicals have entered the mainstream through various products and often times those chemicals aren’t approved by the EPA? That’s a scary amount of chemicals, but what’s even more scary is upwards of 70 percent of typical cleaning products often found in your home contain these harmful agents.

Phthalates, Sodium Hydroxide & Ammonia — Oh My!
You grew up recognizing products your mom used, so when it came time for you to clean your own home, you instinctively remained brand loyal. But have you looked at the labels of cleaning products under your sink? Oftentimes a label will warn that a product can be harmful to people or pets so that could be a sign to ditch it. Also, experts say the average home has 62 toxic chemicals lurking about you may not even be aware of. Some potentially harmful chemicals you want to watch out for include phtalates (in fragranced products), triclosan (in liquid dishwashing detergent), 2-Butoxyethanol (in multi-purpose cleaners) and even chlorine (in laundry whiteners and toilet bowl cleaners).

Keep Kids Safe(r)
We can’t protect our kids from all the evil in the world, but we can limit their access to harmful chemicals. Using natural cleaning products will reduce the chance of an accidental poisoning. In fact, it’s shown that household cleaning products rank within the top 5 causes of childhood poisoning cases. So in addition to switching over to green cleaning products, be sure to keep the products stored in child-safe cabinets.

Breathe Deep. Breathe Clean.

While they help make your clothes and rooms smell better, some fabric softeners and antibacterial spray cleaners contain quaternary ammonium compounds (a.k.a. quats), like benzalkonium chloride. These agents have been known to contribute to otherwise healthy people getting asthma. In fact, a recent study shows about 53 percent of cleaning products tested contain ingredients that can harm the lungs while 22 percent can cause asthma.

Keep the Air Clean
Many household products, especially sprays and aerosols, can contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can have short and long term health effects associated with your central nervous system, liver and kidneys. When you use a spray, the chemicals can linger in the air long after the initial mist dissipates. Time to ditch ‘em?
