Fifteen Toyota, Lexus and Scion Vehicles Earn Top Safety Pick Awards

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) today announced that 15 Toyota, Lexus, and Scion vehicles earned Top Safety Pick awards for the 2012 model year, more than any other automaker.

Commenting on today’s announcement, Steve St. Angelo, executive vice president of Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc., said, “Safety is a core value that dates back to the foundation of our company. IIHS’ awards further recognize our commitment to helping protect drivers and passengers.”

The 2012 model year winners are: Toyota Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Highlander, Prius, Prius v, Sienna, Tundra Crew Cab, Venza, and Yaris; Lexus CT 200h and RX, and Scion tC, xB, and xD.

According to the IIHS, Top Safety Pick awards recognize vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side, rollover, and rear crashes based on ratings in IIHS tests.

Mitsubishi Motors Develops New Eco-friendly Floor Mats Using Plant-based Fibers

Bio-PE is a plant-based resin made using sugarcane molasses (a thick syrup produced in the refining of raw sugar). The company has developed the bio-PE fiber for use in floor mat piling with an eye toward reducing usage of petroleum-based plastics and cutting CO₂ emissions. As opposed to conventional petroleum-based floormats, the fiber in this new floormat has a core-sheath structure in which the bio-PE core is covered with conventional petroleum-based polypropylene (PP) sheath which allows it to meet the high levels of performance demanded of car floor mats, including abrasion and heat resistance.

In-house calculations indicate that the new bio-PE fiber floor mat achieves a 15 percent reduction in life-cycle CO₂ emissions ^*¹ over a similar mat made using petroleum-based PP fiber.

In its efforts to stop global warming and reduce dependence on petroleum, MMC is conducting research and development of a series of proprietary plant-based "Green Plastics" to replace petroleum-based plastics used widely in car parts today. The company's current range of plant-based Green Plastics products includes materials made using liquefied wood-based phenolic resins and interior surface materials which combine PET (polyethylene terephthalate) and cotton fibers. MMC will continue to push forward the development and the commercial application of these and other Green Plastics.

INFINITI AND RED BULL RACING BRING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WINNING PERORMANCE TO THE CITY STREETS

Tens of thousands of Formula One fans were treated to an unforgettable display of inspired performance on Saturday, as Infiniti and Red Bull Racing took to the streets with an exclusive live demonstration.

Taking place in Red Bull Racing’s home city of Milton Keynes in the UK, F1 drivers Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber wowed approximately 60,000 spectators by driving the World Championship-winning Red Bull Formula One cars along the city streets, condoned off especially for this historical event. Amongst the roar of engines and clouds of tyre smoke, Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner and Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey were also there to meet and greet fans.

As a major partner of Red Bull Racing, Infiniti was central to the show, with both Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel completing hero laps and waving to the crowd aboard two Infiniti G Convertibles. Each of the drivers arrived at the event in an Infiniti M35h, the world’s fastest-accelerating hybrid, whilst fans had the chance to get up close to Infiniti’s range of cars with a large product display next to the course. This display included a rare chance to see the Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel Version concept, along with an Infiniti FX30ds specially branded in RB7 livery which was also used as the official pace car for the F1 runs.

The event marks the end of a strong first year for the Infiniti and Red Bull Racing partnership, resulting in both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ World Championships. It has also seen Sebastian Vettel sign as the luxury car maker’s Global Brand Ambassador and the subsequent development of the Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel Version, unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Commenting on the event, Wayne Bruce, Communications Director, Infiniti Europe said: “Today has been a truly fitting end to a remarkable first F1 season for Infiniti and we are delighted to have been able to support Red Bull Racing on the event.

Representatives from Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc., (MMNA), along with the Honorable Neil Abercrombie, Governor of Hawaii, and personnel from Cutter Mitsubishi of Aiea, Hawaii, made the very first customer retail delivery of the 100% electric-powered 2012 Mitsubishi i featuring Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle (MiEV) technology in a formal ceremony today at the historic Hawaii State Capitol Building in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Bryson and Bridget Nishimura of Waipahu, Hawaii.

"We purchased the 2012 Mitsubishi i primarily to save on gas – we currently spend about $70.00 a week on fuel. But it should cost us only around $3.00 for a full charge of electricity – that's going to be a great savings for us! Long-term, the Mitsubishi i should save us at least $3,000 a year," said Mr. Nishimura, retired from a career with Hawaiian Telephone.

"I think the car is so cute," Mrs. Nishimura added enthusiastically. "Plus, I like that it's roomy and it's a hatchback. It's going to be so good for the earth – we're both way on board with it. And Cutter Mitsubishi has been great to work with, too."

The 2012 Mitsubishi i recently earned the #1 ranking on the EPA's list of the "Fuel Economy Leaders: 2012 Model Year" in the governmental agency's annual Fuel Economy Guide, thanks to its high EPA-rating of 126 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) in city driving/99 MPGe highway (112 MPGe combined).
"With the cost of gas still on the rise, these vehicles offer our consumers an option that will be cost-effective in the long run, and at the same time allows our state to reach its energy independence goals," Governor Neil Abercrombie stated. "In Hawaii, our climate and energy priorities make us best suited for these types of vehicles."

The City and County of Honolulu and Hawaii Electric are among the first fleet customers to take advantage of the reduced operating costs, high efficiency and environmental benefits provided by adding Mitsubishi's all-new electrical vehicle to their respective fleets in America's island paradise. Vehicle deliveries to the Hawaiian municipality and utility will occur later in the month of December.

Lexus 'CT 200h' Receives Maximum Rating Under New Japanese Overall Safety Assessment

Lexus announces that the "CT 200h" gasoline-electric hybrid five-door hatchback has received a maximum five-star rating in automobile safety testing and evaluation for 2011 carried out under the Japan New Car Assessment Program (JNCAP). The rating is based on a new overall safety assessment structure introduced this year.

The new assessment structure integrates vehicle occupant protection and pedestrian protection performance during collisions under a single assessment structure, providing an overall safety evaluation for automobiles with the assignment of one to five stars. The CT 200h was awarded five stars for achieving the highest level of safety through features including a highly rigid cabin and impact-absorbing body, state-of-the-art technology in the form of a body structure that lessens injuries to pedestrians, and the vehicle's Whiplash Injury Lessening (WIL) seats and eight airbags.
Lexus will continue to pursue the highest levels of safety performance.

Toyota Begins Corolla Production in Mississippi

Toyota team members today celebrated the opening of Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Mississippi (TMMMS), the company’s new $800 million plant outside of Tupelo that assembles the Corolla, the world’s best-selling car of all time. Joining the celebration were Toyota Motor Corporation President Akio Toyoda and Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour.

TMMMS is Toyota’s fourteenth North American plant, further advancing the company’s efforts to design, develop and build vehicles where they are sold. The plant has the annual capacity to produce 150,000 vehicles and will employ nearly 2,000.

Speaking at ceremony, Toyoda said, “Building vehicles where we sell them helps us be even closer to our customers. The U.S. market remains a key to Toyota’s overall success, and Toyota Mississippi will play an important role for us here.”

"Today is a great day for Blue Springs and the entire State of Mississippi," Governor Haley Barbour said. "Toyota chose Mississippi for its dedicated, talented workforce, and I know they will enjoy great success at their newest facility. Toyota’s Buffalo, W. Va., engine plant is supplying all engines for Corolla production at TMMMS. Cylinder heads and blocks for those engines are produced at both of Toyota’s Bodine Aluminum castings plants, located in Troy, Mo., and Jackson, Tenn.

When Toyota announced the Blue Springs project, they also announced a partnership with the CREATE Foundation and a donation of $50 million - $5 million a year for 10 years - was also announced toward an innovative addition to the public school system in the Pontotoc, Union, and Lee counties. The Center for Professional Futures will be an education facility that will expose students in the eight school districts in the PUL Alliance counties in to professional careers through high performance teaching and a modern learning environment.

2012 Mitsubishi i Ranked #1 Fuel Economy Leader in the EPA's Annual Fuel Economy Guide

According to the EPA's website, the Fuel Economy Guide is "an annual publication containing the fuel economy estimates for all cars and light trucks. The guide includes much more information that appears on the window sticker alone. It includes information about alternative fueled vehicles, the range of fuel economy for different classes of vehicles, a list of fuel economy leaders, and tips for improving fuel economy."
The annual Fuel Economy Guide is published jointly by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE).

Honda's North American Plants to Resume Normal Production

Due to improvement in the overall parts supply situation, all of Honda's North American plants will resume normal production by December 1, 2011.
While the severe flooding in Thailand continues to have some impact to our parts supply, Honda is working closely with its suppliers to fully reestablish the flow of parts for the products made in North America. Honda will update this information in the event changes are required.
In 2010, 87 percent of the Honda and Acura automobiles sold in the U.S. were produced in North America. While most of the parts and materials used to produce these products are purchased from North American suppliers, a few critical electronic parts are sourced from Thailand and other regions of the world.

Toyota Reports October 2011 Sales

Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported October sales of 134,046 units, a decrease of 4.3 percent from the same period last year on a daily selling rate (DSR) basis. On a raw volume basis, unadjusted for 26 selling days in October 2011 compared to 27 selling days in October 2010, TMS sales were down 7.8 from the year-ago month.

The Toyota Division posted October total sales of 115,954 units, a decrease of 3.2 percent on a DSR basis from October 2010, and up 4.7 percent from September 2011. On a raw volume basis, Toyota Division sales were down 6.7 percent from the year-ago month. The Lexus Division reported total sales of 18,092 units, a decrease of 10.9 percent on a DSR basis from October 2010, and up 16.0 percent from September 2011. Volume-wise, Lexus Division sales were down 14.2 percent over last October.

Toyota Division

Toyota Division passenger cars recorded sales of 62,541 units, flat compared to October 2010. The Camry and Camry Hybrid led passenger cars with combined monthly sales of 22,043 units. Corolla recorded sales of 16,244 units, and the Prius mid-size gas-electric hybrid reported sales of 11,008 units. The Avalon sedan posted sales of 2,502 units, an increase of 17.7 percent over the year-ago month.

Toyota Division light trucks posted sales of 53,413 units in October, down 6.7 percent from October 2010. The RAV4 compact SUV led light trucks with sales of 10,680 units. The Sienna minivan posted sales of 8,767 units, the Highlander and Highlander Hybrid reported combined sales of 8,026 units, and the 4Runner SUV reported sales of 3,688 units. The Tundra full-size pickup posted sales of 6,496 units, and the Tacoma mid-size pickup saw an increase of 17.0 percent compared the same period last year with monthly sales of 10,172 units.

"The all-new 2012 Camry launch is off to a great start with October sales topping 22,000 and another 35,000 on the way to dealers this month. We're also pleased the momentum in light truck sales continues, increasing over last month's levels and improving year-over-year," said Bob Carter, Toyota Division group vice president and general manager, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. "The all-new 2012 Yaris is now on sale, and in November we will launch the all-new 2012 Camry Hybrid in addition to Prius v, with Scion iQ arriving by year-end. We're optimistic retail sales will continue to be strong and expect to exceed year-ago sales levels in the fourth quarter."

Scion posted October sales of 3,952 units, down 18.3 percent from October 2010. The tC sports coupe led the way with sales of 1,927 units, the xB urban utility vehicle recorded sales of 1,397 units, and the xD reported sales of 628 units for the month.

Lexus Division

Lexus Division reported passenger car sales of 10,112 units, a decrease of 2.9 percent from October 2010. The ES entry luxury sedan led passenger cars with sales of 4,300 units, while the IS lineup reported combined sales of 2,640 units. The LS luxury sedan lineup increased 2.5 percent over the year-ago month with sales of 1,186 units. The all-new CT 200h premium hybrid compact posted 1,511 units in its eighth month of sales.

Lexus Division light trucks recorded sales of 7,980 units, down 19.4 percent from October 2010. The RX and RX Hybrid luxury utility vehicles led the segment with combined October sales of 6,691 units, and the GX mid-sized luxury utility vehicle posted sales of 1,023 units.

TMS Hybrids

TMS posted October sales of 14,184 hybrid vehicles, a decrease of 7.4 percent compared to the same period last year. Toyota Division posted sales of 11,580 hybrids, while Lexus Division reported sales of 2,604 hybrids for the month, an increase of 21.2 percent over October 2010.

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) will be showing a total of 15 vehicles (12 on Press Day 1) at the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show, held at the Tokyo Big Sight convention center in Tokyo from November 30 through December 11 (open to the public from December 3).Two cars will make their world premiere at the show: the Mirage and the MITSUBISHI Concept PX-MiEVⅡ. They respectively embody two major pillars to the company’s product strategy outlined in the JUMP 2013 mid-term business plan: global strategic models focused on emerging markets and models featuring “green technology.” The Mirage compact car embodies the global model strategy while the MITSUBISHI Concept PX-MiEVⅡ concept SUV features “green technology” with its unique plug-in hybrid drivetrain.
Also at the Mitsubishi Motors booth will be the MINICAB-MiEV light commercial electric vehicle due to be released in the Japanese market in December this year and the i-MiEV new-generation electric vehicle (EV) which is currently on sale in countries all over the world including European countries, and is to be rolled out in the United States by the end of this year. Alongside these will be the RVR compact SUV (ASX or Outlander Sport in some markets) powered by a new MIVEC (1) engine that incorporates MMC’s Auto Stop & Go (AS&G) idle-stop technology, and the Pajero (Montero or Shogun in some markets) SUV powered by a “clean diesel” engine.
1: Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control system
The Mitsubishi Motors booth will also feature the MiEV House, a concept of a “smart house” that tackles energy and global warming by managing energy usage between the home itself, “smart appliances,” EVs/plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV), and “smart grids” all at the same time through HEMS (Home Energy Management System) and MMC’s own EIS (Electric Vehicle Integration System). HEMS makes life more comfortable for people living in homes installed with it by continually monitoring power available to power being used and optimizing both so that effects of energy shortages and energy costs can be reduced. Connected to a “smart home” with HEMS, EIS constantly monitors EV/PHEV battery usage and efficiency (which varies on how the EV/PHEV is driven), feeds this information to HEMS, which then optimizes charging from the house so that the EV/PHEV always has enough energy in it.
In addition to the MiEV House will be the MiEV Café, a relaxation space powered by the battery of an electric vehicle parked right beside it. The electric vehicle will power the MiEV Café through a new heavy-duty power supply device (also on display) that enables the supply of up to 1500W from EV and PHEV batteries. The heavy-duty power supply device is to go on sale in Japan within this fiscal year.

1) Mirage
The Mirage’s (2) design focused on compactness, affordability, and high fuel efficiency in order to fit the needs of emerging markets as an affordable entry-level model as well as needs of advanced markets for fuel efficiency and low-CO2 emission. In addition, the Mirage features good maneuverability and easy drivability inherent to a compact car while also providing a comfortable interior space for five adults.
2: Stems from the English word “mirage.” The name was first used for the Mirage series developed for resource/energy/space-saving and high-performance in a compact package which debuted in Japan in March 1978. The new Mirage concept inherits the essence of that first series: cleverly getting the most performance and function out of a limited space.
MMC has targeted top-of-class fuel efficiency (Japan market version) of 30km per liter through a variety of measures including painstaking reduction in weight throughout almost every part of the car, reduction in rolling resistance and higher efficiency through detailed improvements to the engine, transmission, brakes and tires, and an aerodynamic body that reduces air resistance and drag. 2) MITSUBISHI Concept PX-MiEVⅡ
MMC has been focusing its EV technology in the Japanese minicar class. MMC became the first major automobile manufacturer to bring a mass-produced electric vehicle to market when it rolled out the i-MiEV next-generation EV in 2009. The company will introduce its second mass-produced EV—the MINICAB-MiEV minicar-class light commercial EV—in December this year. These models are very popular as city commuters—vehicles used for transporting small groups of passengers over short distances in urban areas.
Not anymore. The MITSUBISHI Concept PX-MiEVⅡ is Mitsubishi Motors’ idea for a mid-size plug-in hybrid PHEV model that offers a long cruising range demanded by mid-size (and larger) vehicles. The MITSUBISHI Concept PX-MiEVⅡ contains a state-of-the-art drivetrain derived from MMC’s already existing EV technology that delivers the environmental performance and quietness inherent to an EV in an SUV package that provides more comfortable motoring and allows for higher utility outside of a city commuter. The MITSUBISHI Concept PX-MiEVⅡ, with its high environmental performance and fuel efficiency, effectively extinguishes many negative perceptions of SUVs.

MMC’s unique plug-in hybrid system fuses EV technology derived from the i-MiEV with a small conventional engine that features MMC’s latest fuel and environmental efficiency technologies. This combination provides not only a combined fuel efficiency (3) of more than 60km per liter, far superior than that of a conventional engine-driven car, but also very high levels of environmental performance while maintaining a cruising range on a par with conventional engine-driven vehicles (over 800 km).

MMC’s plug-in hybrid system uses high-capacity batteries that allow the vehicle to cover over 50 km in all-electric mode alone, allowing it to be driven solely as an EV for most everyday situations. Depending on power consumption and remaining battery charge the system will start the engine automatically as a generator, and the engine can also be used to help drive the wheels as necessary. In addition, with the push of a button, the driver has the freedom to select Battery Drive Mode when he/she wishes to drive quietly and emissions-free (at sufficient battery levels) in residential areas or the countryside using pure EV power. At the same time, the driver can also switch to Battery Charge Mode while on the move, controlling use of battery power and using the engine as a generator to charge the batteries.

A socket fitted to the vehicle allows the electricity stored in the drive batteries to be used to power electric appliances when camping or in other outdoor pursuits, or to provide an emergency power source. In addition, the quick-charge port is vehicle-to-home (V2H) compatible.

Another feature of the MITSUBISHI Concept PX-MiEVⅡ apart from its outstanding environmental performance is its drivetrain which uses a newly developed twin-motor four-wheel-drive system mated to Mitsubishi’s S-AWC (Super-All Wheel Control) advanced traction control system. Nine Japanese Companies to Establish EV Quick-Charging Infrastructure Promotion Organization

ULVAC, Inc., Kanematsu Corporation, Kandenko Co., Ltd., Suzuyo Shoji Co., Ltd., Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc., Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), the Development Bank of Japan Inc., Honda Motor Co., Ltd., and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation today agreed to establish an organization to provide membership-based quick-charging services for users of electric vehicles (EVs). The organization, named the Charging Network Development Organization, LLC, aims to encourage increased and widespread use of EVs by helping to expand the scope of charging infrastructure.

As of the end of October, approximately 800 quick chargers have been installed in Japan, a number still viewed as insufficient from a users' standpoint. Until now, quick chargers have generally been installed, at the owner's expense, by businesses and private organizations for private use or as part of a government program. The lack of an effective method to recover costs has become a significant obstacle to widespread installation.

Under the new membership service, quick-charger owners can register their chargers with the organization in a central database. The organization will then make charger information, such as number and location, available to EV users registered as members, thus facilitating convenient and efficient charging. Membership fees will pay a portion of the installation and maintenance costs incurred by quick-charger owners, helping to promote the development of quick-charger infrastructure. The organization plans to start such services in fiscal year 2012.

The concept for the service is the result of investigations conducted by a working group formed at the request from the CHAdeMO Association^* to all its members in July 2010. In March 2011, the CHAdeMO Association announced that it would support the commercial development of the service to promote the spread of quick-charging infrastructure.

The organization will seek the cooperation of a broad range of local governments and businesses for the service while working to increase interest in quick-charger installation, thereby establishing a charging infrastructure sufficient to encourage the greater use of EVs and to increase user convenience.

Martin Brundle joins son for 24 Hours of Le Mans drive

Ex-Formula One driver, Martin Brundle, will join his son Alex at the wheel of the Nissan-powered Greaves Motorsport LMP2 prototype at next year's 24 Hours of Le Mans (June 16-17).

The deal sees Brundle senior reunited with Nissan, after the Englishman spearheaded its official works effort at the world's oldest and most celebrated endurance race in 1997 with the R390 GT1.

For 2012, the father and son combination will pilot the race-winning Greaves Motorsport Zytek Z11SN-Nissan sports prototype. Not only did the car take the LMP2 class win at this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans on its way to finishing eighth overall, but victories at Le Castellet, Imola and Silverstone also saw the Nissan-engined LMP2 car capture both the 2011 Le Mans Series drivers' and team titles.

After enjoying a successful Formula One career that spanned 13 years (1984-96), Martin Brundle has remained in the sport as a highly-regarded and multi award-winning commentator on British television.

Joining him in the driver's line-up for the 80th running of the race will be his 21-year old son Alex.

As the leading British driver in this year's Formula Two Championship, he will join Greaves Motorsport in 2012 to race the Nissan-powered prototype as the team defends its Le Mans Series crown.

The Brundles will follow in the footsteps of a small number of father-son combinations to have competed at the illustrious race together, including Mario Andretti, with son Michael, and Nigel Mansell with sons Leo and Greg.

Martin Brundle, 52, said: "I'm very much looking forward to returning to the Le Mans 24 Hour race with Nissan and the Greaves Motorsport LMP2 team. This is an unexpected pleasure, heightened by the fact I will be team-mates with my son. Toyota Answers Customer Questions About The Solution For Sticking Accelerator Pedals

1. What is the solution Toyota announced to fix sticking accelerator pedals?

Toyota’s engineers have developed and rigorously tested a solution that is both effective and simple. A precision-cut steel reinforcement bar will be installed into the accelerator pedal assembly, thereby eliminating the excess friction that has caused pedals to stick in rare instances.

2. What is the problem that could cause accelerators to stick and led to the recall?

The issue involves a friction device in the pedal designed to provide the proper “feel” by adding resistance and making the pedal steady and stable.

This friction device includes a “shoe” that rubs against an adjoining surface during normal pedal operation. Due to the materials used, wear and environmental conditions, these surfaces may, over time, begin to stick and release instead of operating smoothly. In some cases, friction could increase to a point that the pedal is slow to return to the idle position or, in rare cases, the pedal sticks, leaving the throttle partially open.

3. How does a steel reinforcement bar solve this problem?

The steel reinforcement bar will reduce the surface tension between the friction shoe and the adjoining surface. With this reinforcement in place, the excess friction that can cause the pedal to stick is eliminated.

4. How does Toyota know that this solution will be effective?

We have confirmed the effectiveness of the newly reinforced pedals through rigorous testing on pedal assemblies that had previously shown a tendency to stick. Nothing is more important to Toyota than the safety and satisfaction of our customers, and we have high confidence in our solution for fixing our customers’ vehicles.

5. When can I get my vehicle fixed?

We will begin contacting customers to let them know when to bring in their vehicles for the fix, and some of them will be notified as early as this week.

At Toyota, our highest priority has been to quickly and effectively address the needs of owners of affected vehicles. Parts to reinforce the pedals are already being shipped for use by dealers, and many Toyota dealers will work extended hours to complete the recall campaign as quickly and conveniently as possible -- some even staying open 24 hours a day.

6. How long will it take for a dealer to repair my automobile?

The actual repair involves about 30 minutes’ work.

7. Is the repair covered by warranty? Will drivers have to pay any money out of pocket for this work?

Toyota will cover all repair costs associated with this work.

8. Does the reinforced pedal feel any different?

Drivers should not notice any change in the feel of the pedal.

9. Is my car safe to drive if it has not yet received this solution?

To be clear, the condition is rare and generally does not occur suddenly. It can occur when the pedal mechanism becomes worn and, in certain conditions, the accelerator pedal may become harder to depress, slower to return or, in the worst case, stuck in a partially depressed position.

Customers who experience an accelerator pedal that is hard to depress, slow to return or is unsmooth during operation should drive the vehicle to a safe location, shut off the engine and contact a Toyota dealer contacted for assistance

In the event that a driver experiences an accelerator pedal that sticks in a partial open throttle position or returns slowly to idle position, the vehicle can be controlled with firm and steady application of the brakes. The brakes should not be pumped repeatedly because it could deplete vacuum assist, requiring stronger brake pedal pressure. The vehicle should be driven to the nearest safe location, the engine shut off and a Toyota dealer contacted for assistance.

10. What if my vehicle is also affected by the floor mat recall? Which will be addressed first?

We are working to coordinate the pedal entrapment and the sticking pedal recalls to minimize the number of customers who will have to have two service visits.

11. What do I do if I experience a sticking accelerator pedal before my car receives the remedy? Should I bring my car to a dealer?

Otherwise, no action is required at this time unless you feel you are experiencing this condition. We will begin contacting customers to let them know when to bring in their vehicles for the fix, and some of them will be notified as early as this week.

12. Can I return my vehicle to Toyota if I purchased it in the five-day period between when the recall was announced and Toyota stopped the sale on my vehicle? What are my options?

Toyota will work with customers who have concerns about their new vehicles on a case-by-case basis.

13. Which models are affected by the sticky accelerator pedal recall/stop sale?

Toyota’s accelerator pedal recall and suspension of sales is confined to the following Toyota Division vehicles:

* Certain 2009-2010 RAV4,
* Certain 2009-2010 Corolla,
* 2009-2010 Matrix,
* 2005-2010 Avalon,
* Certain 2007-2010 Camry,
* Certain 2010 Highlander,
* 2007-2010 Tundra,
* 2008-2010 Sequoia

Highlander hybrids and Camry hybrids are not affected by this action and will remain for sale.

Further, Camry, RAV 4, Corolla and Highlander vehicles with VINs that begin with "J" are not affected.

14. What is a “VIN” and how do I find it on my automobile?

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a 17-character sequence of numbers and letters that is used by the automobile industry to uniquely identify motor vehicles. It can be viewed through the windshield on the driver’s side at the front of the dashboard.

In addition, the VIN number is also located on a sticker located the driver’s side pillar, with the tire inflation information and on the vehicle’s registration.

15. Why are mechanically similar Lexus and Scion vehicles not affected by this recall?

The recall affected pedal is confined to one of Toyota’s suppliers. That supplier’s pedals are not used on Lexus and Scion vehicles.

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) was honored with the internationally acclaimed Paul Pietsch Award for the development of the new-generation electric vehicle i-MiEV. The prize for automotive technology and design was received by Mitsubishi Motors Corporation's Member of the Board in Charge of Product Strategy & Development Group Headquarters Gayu Uesugi from auto motor und sport editor-in-chief Bernd Ostmann.

In Japan, the i-MiEV has already been on the market since July 2009 whilst production of the export left-hand-drive version will start in October 2010. With zero CO₂ tailpipe emissions and minimal well-to-wheel generation of CO₂, MMC's i-MiEV makes a valuable contribution to climate protection.

The i-MiEV is planned for European launch in the end of 2010, and its charging system will be compatible with European 220/240V household outlets, providing for a zero-to-full charge within an estimated seven hours.

"We are particularly pleased that the high-caliber international judging panel honors our i-MiEV electric vehicle by presenting it with this internationally-acclaimed technology award this year. TMC Announces Remedy for U.S. Accelerator-pedal Recall

TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announces its remedy for accelerator pedals on eight Toyota-brand vehicle models subject to a recall in the United States. Details of the remedy were released on February 1 in the U.S. by Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., Inc. (TMS).

In the accelerator-pedal assembly of affected vehicles, condensation resulting from cold-weather use of the heater or other causes may form on the worn surface of what is known as a friction device. If this occurs, there is a possibility that, in the worst case, the accelerator pedal returns slowly or does not return to its idle position. To reassure customers, TMC decided on a recall on January 21 (U.S. time).

The remedy involves installing a precision-cut steel reinforcement bar into the accelerator-pedal assembly that creates a space to reduce the surface tension between the friction device and a component called the pedal arm. The bar also strengthens the reaction force of the spring that returns the accelerator pedal to its non-pressed position.

Preparations are now underway to have U.S. dealers apply the remedy to affected vehicles. Priority is placed on addressing vehicles already in the marketplace, and considerations are also being made toward recommencing sales and production of the vehicle models concerned.

TMC plans to implement a similar remedy in Europe, China and other countries and regions, where details are to be worked out with local authorities.

TMC to Launch "G's" Sports Conversion Series

TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announces it plans to begin a gradual rollout in Japan in mid-2010 of its newly developed "G Sports"¹ (G's) sports conversion car² series. The series, to be sold through Toyota-brand dealers, is meant to offer to a wider range of people the "automotive seasoning" that TMC has pursued through its GAZOO Racing³ activities.

The G's series is designed for customers who strongly desire to own a unique vehicle, offering them a personalized interior and exterior design along with sports-driving performance. TMC has directly designed this sports conversion series, instead of the conventional approach of outsourcing development to a customization firm.

The base vehicle of the G's series is equipped with internal and external components that include sports suspension, aerodynamic parts and racing-style seats. A special focus has been placed on "driving seasoning" to make handling fun, through fine-tuning carried out by the GAZOO Racing test drivers who drove the Lexus "LF-A" in the 24 Hours Nürburgring race in Germany and developed the "iQ"-based "GAZOO Racing tuned by MN⁴" (GRMN).

TMC's aim is to bring that "driving seasoning" and the joy of automobiles to a wider range of customers by reducing production costs through partial inline customization⁵ and other measures.

TMC has been carrying out a diverse range of activities to broaden the joy and dreams that vehicles inspire, along with its ongoing efforts to use hybrid-vehicle and other technologies to address environmental issues.

In addition to the "FT-86 Concept" rear-wheel drive compact sports car and the Lexus "LFA" shown at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, plans call for TMC's sports model lineup to expand through the introduction of conversion models and sports-trim models of mass-produced vehicle series, such as the GRMN and G's series.

The all-new 2011 Honda CR-Z sport hybrid coupe, making its U.S. production debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, introduces sleek styling and sporty handling to the hybrid segment, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today.

"The CR-Z is a personal sport hybrid coupe for people with a spirit of adventure and an elevated sense of responsibility toward the environment," said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda. "It's the first hybrid designed to maximize style and fun, in addition to efficiency and economy."

Set to go on sale late summer in the U.S., the CR-Z is powered by a 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine with Honda's compact and lightweight Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid-electric system. The two-passenger CR-Z introduces a new three-mode drive system that allows the driver to select between Sport, Econ (Economy) and Normal driving modes.

The exterior's distinctive "one-motion" wedge form originates from its low-slung hood to form a broad forward stance. A side profile with a deeply inset beltline conveys a dynamic tension, while the short wheelbase and large, wide front grille accents the vehicle's athletic presence.

The futuristically styled interior offers a high-tech appearance and ergonomically intuitive controls. Instrument panel meters illuminate with a three-dimensional, vibrant blue color theme resulting in a multi-layered appearance. Set against a motif of textured black materials and aluminum-style trim accents, the upper portion of the dashboard extends toward the driver to provide a wrap-around cockpit environment. The passenger zone offers an open, comfortable space. Premium sport-oriented cloth seats are designed to provide excellent lateral support along with everyday driving comfort. A mid-ship console behind the front seats optimizes cargo space. A hard-shell separator can be closed to create additional hidden storage.

The two trim levels include the well-equipped CR-Z and the feature-rich CR-Z EX. A six-speed manual transmission is standard equipment and a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is available. Standard features on the CR-Z include Vehicle Stability Assist, an AM/FM/CD/USB audio system with six speakers, automatic climate control, power windows and door locks, remote entry, cruise control, and more. The CR-Z EX adds, High-Intensity Discharge (HID) Headlights with Auto-On/Off, fog lights, a 360-Watt AM/FM/CD premium audio system with seven speakers including subwoofer, Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®, perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel, and more. The CR-Z EX is available with the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System¹ with voice recognition.

The CR-Z represents the sixth unique version of Honda's original IMA technology since the launch of the 2000 Insight, the first hybrid vehicle available in North America in December 1999. The foundation of the CR-Z's hybrid powertrain is a 4-cylinder, 16-valve, single overhead cam engine with "intelligent" Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (i-VTEC) that receives additional power from the IMA system's DC brushless electric motor. The i-VTEC system controls the opening and closing of one intake valve per cylinder to enhance combustion at low RPMs. The 10-kilowatt electric motor assists in acceleration and also acts as a generator during braking or coasting to capture kinetic energy that recharges the 100-volt IMA nickel-metal hydride battery pack. The gasoline engine can automatically turn off during vehicle stops to improve efficiency.

The system delivers a combined peak output of 122 horsepower² at 6,000 rpm and 128 lb-ft. of torque² at 1,000 to 1,500 rpm (123 lb-ft on CVT-equipped models). Preliminary fuel economy estimates are anticipated to result in a rating of 36 city/38 highway miles per gallon³ on CVT-equipped models. Manual transmission models are anticipated to achieve an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 31 city/37 highway miles per gallon³. The CR-Z is rated as an Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV) in states that adhere to California Air Resource Board (CARB) ZEV standards (EPA Tier 2, Bin 2 in all states).

The standard six-speed manual transmission is engineered for optimal acceleration performance in gears one through five and for optimal fuel economy in sixth gear. When starting on steep inclines from a stop, hill start assist temporarily prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards during the moment between releasing the brake, depressing the throttle and releasing the clutch (for a duration of approximately 1.5 seconds). The available CVT provides the convenience of an automatic transmission with a seamless transition between minimum and maximum ratios, while also keeping the engine within an optimal RPM range for overall efficiency. To increase the performance potential of the CVT, paddle shifters located on the steering wheel allow the driver to manually simulate the stepped holding pattern. In Sport mode, the paddle shifters will hold and maintain a selected ratio.
The CR-Z's three-mode drive system allows the driver to select between individual modes of performance for Sport, Normal and Economy driving styles. The system is activated via three backlit buttons to the left of the steering wheel.

The Sport mode enhances multiple vehicle systems for performance including the engine throttle responsiveness, electric power steering effort and the electric motor power assist. The inner ring of the tachometer illuminates red when the vehicle is in Sport mode.

During Econ mode operation, the engine's responsiveness is tuned for optimal economy, the electric motor assist gives priority to fuel efficiency and the air conditioning system can reduce its overall load on the engine. The inner ring of the tachometer transitions between blue and green when the vehicle is in Econ mode, with the green representing more ecological driving.

Normal mode provides standard settings for steering, engine response, motor assist and air conditioning. Similar to Econ mode, the tachometer ring transitions between blue and green when the vehicle is in normal mode, with the green representing more ecological driving. Like the Honda Insight, the CR-Z offers an Eco Guide and Eco scoring feature to help drivers track progress of efficient driving styles.

The front MacPherson strut suspension and rear H-shaped torsion beam suspension settings are tuned to provide a sporty, solid and dynamic driving experience. All models are equipped with 16x6-inch aluminum wheels with 195/55 R16 86V tires. Accessory 17x7 alloy wheels with 205/45R17 84V tires with are available. The standard anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake distribution (EBD) uses ventilated front discs and solid rear discs. The low vehicle height and placement of the battery and other hybrid components beneath the rear cargo area further contribute to a low center of gravity, which is key to the new CR-Z's responsive, sporty handling. Electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering enhances steering performance and improves efficiency.

In addition to being environmentally responsible, the CR-Z demonstrates a commitment to safety in its design and construction. The Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure helps protect vehicle occupants in a frontal collision. Additional safety technologies include standard dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags; standard front-side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS); side-curtain airbags, active head restraints; an anti-lock braking system; a tire pressure monitoring system; and a pedestrian injury mitigation design in the front of the vehicle.

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) will premiere its ASX all-new compact crossover from Tuesday March 2, 2010 to Sunday March 14, 2010 at the 80^th Geneva International Motor Show held at the Geneva Palexpo in Switzerland.

The ASX is the European-spec version of the Japanese RVR, which is slated to go on sale in Japan from February 2010. MMC's new compact crossover will seat 5 and will be sequentially introduced in European countries from late spring 2010, aimed at expanding MMC's passenger car footprint in the region, following in the footsteps of the larger and recently redesigned Outlander mid-size crossover.

Nissan Mixim EV Concept Joins Michelin Challenge Design™ Display at 2010 North American International Auto Show

The Nissan Mixim, a one-off compact concept car powered by a pair of innovative “Super Motor” electric motor/generators, makes its first U.S. appearance as part of the Michelin Challenge Design™ display at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, January 11 - 24, 2010. Now in its ninth year, the Michelin Challenge Design celebrates original creative thinking and innovation in vehicle design.

The Mixim has the same wheelbase as a production Nissan cube®, but is more than 11 inches shorter, nearly 10 inches lower and four inches wider – giving it a distinctive, aerodynamic coupe shape. The exterior styling is highlighted by LED driving lights, a wraparound windscreen inspired by the visor of a safety helmet, a dramatic angular slash running through the center of the doors and triangular side windows that link the sloping roofline with the sweptback rear hatchback.

Inside, the innovative design continues with 3-person seating – with the driver sitting in the center position flanked by passenger seats on each side.
