Meaning: No matter how much / how hard.

When to use?

1) Used with ku-form of adjective.

Ikura hayakutemo roku ji kara ni ikitai.
Hiragana: いくらはやくてもろくじにいきたい。
Kanji:いくら早くても６次に行きたい。

= I want to go there by six at the earliest.

2) Used with te-form of verb

Ikura renshuushitemo yoku naranai.
Hiragana: いくられんしゅうしてもよくならない。
Kanji: いくら練習しても良くならない。

= No matter how how hard I practiced, it doesn't get me better.

3) Used with noun

Ikura tsuyoi kaze demo sono biru wa ugokanai.
Hiragana: いくらつよいかぜでもそのびるはうごかない。
Kanji: いくら強い風でもそのビルは動かない。

= Even a strong wind cannot move that building.

When someone treats you for breakfast, lunch or dinner, it's a custom for Japanese people to say "Gochisou sama deshita" - ご馳走さまでした。(in Japanese characters) after the meal which means "Thank you for the treat", and it is one way of showing that you really like or enjoy the food. Usually, You can observe this custom when you are going to Ramen house or any Japanese owned restaurants in Japan.
I remember that I never fail to say this word every time I eat for dinner after work at Ramen shop beside the train station at Kawasaki, Japan.

When to use?

1) After te-form of verb + wa

= You should not smoke there.

Amari bi-ru wo nonde wa ikenai yo.
Hiragana: あまりビールをのんではいけないよ。

= You must not drink too much.

2) After nai-form of verb + nakereba

Mou ikanakereba ikenai yo.
Hiragana: もういかなければいけないよ。
Kanji: もう行かなければいけないよ。

= I have to go now.

3) After dictionary form of verb + to, followed by kara

Yuki ga furu to ikenai kara ikanai hou ga ii desu yo.
Hiragana: ゆきがふるといけないからいかないほうがいいですよ。
Kanji: 雪が降るといけないから行かないほうが良いですよ。

= It's better not to go in case the snow falls.

4) Used as adjective

Kore no doko ga ikenai no desu ka.
Hiragana: これのどこがいけないのですか。
Kanji: これの何処がいけないのですか。

= What's wrong with this?

When to use?

Dare ga ichiban jouzu ni eigo wo hanashimasu ka.

2) Used with predicate of emotion/ feelings

When to use?

1) After noun expressing length, quantity or price

Soko made iku no ni ni-jikan ijou kakarimasu.
Hiragana: そこまでいくのににじかんいじょうかかります。
Kanji: そこまで行くのに2時間以上かかります。

= It will take more than two hours to get there.

Kono michi wa ni kirometoru ijou arimasu.
Hiragana: このみちはにきろめとるいじょうあります。
Kanji: この道は2キロメトル以上あります。

= This road is more than two kilometers long.

2) Followed by no + noun

Nijuu-issai ijou no hito shika hairemasen.
Hiragana: にじゅういっさいいじょうのひとしかはいれません。
Kanji: ２１才以上の人しか入れません。

= Only people who are twenty one and above are allowed to enter.

3) After the demonstrative pronouns, kore, are, sore, etc.

Kore ijou wa muri desu.
Hiragana: これいじょうはむりです。
Kanji: これ以上は無理です。

= Any more than this is impossible.

4) At the end of a clause

Koko made yatta ijou, tsuzukemashou.

Hiragana: ここまでやったいじょう、つづけましょう。
Kanji: ここまでやった以上、続けましょう。

= As long as we've come this far, let's continue.

= The examination is almost finished.

2) In negative sentence

Senshuu wa hotondo eigo wo benkyou shimasen deshita.

When to use?

It is usually the 1st person in declarative sentences, and 2nd person in questions. In some cases, when hoshii is followed by garu, 3rd person should be used.

= I want a personal computer very much.

Nani ga hoshii no desu ka.

= What do you want?

2) After te-form of verb

Nani ka o katte hoshii no desu ga.

When to use?

= I will ask some other students.

2) Followed by particles "ni" or "wa"

O-Mizu no hoka wa nani mo nomimasen.

= I don't drink anything other than water.

3) Used as noun followed by particle "no"

Hoka no o misete kudasai.

= Please show me another one.

4) Used as adverb followed by particle "ni" or "de"

Hoka ni nani ga motto yasui no desu ka.

= What else is cheaper?

When to use?

When talking to a person of higher position/ status or indirect manner, it is better to include "to omoimasu" (meaning I think) at the end of the phrase.

Kare ni soudan suru hou ga ii (to omoimasu).

= It is better to consult him.

2) After ta-form of verb

Kyou wa o-bentou o motte itta hou ga ii.
