This is a little bit less about the fashion, but as I think it’s interesting in Osaka how there can be a mix of the strong western commercialisation with the preservation of traditional Japanese culture and aesthetic.

There’s something about this that just reminds me of traditional Japanese wear. The pants are samurai inspired, and his shoes resemble Japanese wooden footwear.

When it’s cold a lot of people wrap up and end up with one big puffy jacket dominating their whole look. The plainness of this person’s long skirt complements the strong textures and colours of her top really well, and she looks really warm!

When it’s cold, it’s very tempting to do what everyone else does and run for a big black overcoat, a beanie, and some gloves. I’m always interested in people who prefer to experiment with a bit of layering, and I especially like it if they do something different. This bowler hat and cardigan combination works well to add something interesting here

I’m starting to see berets come back into fashion here. I love how it works really well in this multi-layered mess. It’s always good seeing people experiment and do something different in the way they dress.

I love layering, and I don’t see enough green done well on men. This look works really well for me though. It’s kind of messy, with layers hanging out every where and lots of different textures, but I think it all makes him look more manly.

Earth colours seem to be in fashion in Osaka this year. There’s a lot of khaki, browns, and reds.

Nautical Denim

I usually don’t like denim on denim, especially if it’s blue on blue but the hat and scarf really work in this look. It adds a nautical feel to the look which I really like, especially given Osaka’s history as a port city.

One of the newest and hottest street bands in Osaka is もも色パラダイス. They’ve recently been voted the Number 2 street band in The Kinki region (Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Hyogo, etc.) and the Number 5 national street band.

They’ve been busy doing gigs on the streets of Osaka, and you can usually see them around Umeda, or the famous Dotonbori. They have strong voices and great presence so I expect to see much more of them in the future.

They have an official website but as is with most Japanese bands the website is aimed at views on mobile phone, so don’t be fooled by the design of the site.

They have also been featured on TV, which I’ve managed to find and post below. The second video below is a recording of one of their street performances. The last is an official Music Video they have recently released.

Collegiate Jackets are still a thing in Japan and they know how to do it well too. The use of the collegiate jacket in this photo and the last show how versatile they can be. It doesn’t have to be a hipster item.

This guy is what I see in Japanese fashion. There’s a mix of conservatism with care free colourfulness. If that’s even a word. Neck tie at the top leading down to bright red skinny jeans. The denim vest pulls it all together and the sunglasses complete the funk he needs
