How to use your iPhone 3G & 3GS for Verizon

Anyone that has been standing in the same place as 500 or more iPhone users knows that it is over if you plan on using a web connected app or surfing for something on the web. Let alone the strong iPhone packing techies at CES.

What is required is for this hack (not really a hack as much as an additional hotspot in your pocket) is a MiFi. Any carrier MiFi will work for this.

I saw this put into action by Matt Cohen of Tekserve when we were standing in a hotel lobby that was lacking free wifi or AT&T service. He wanted to send up a photo to Twitter. He reached in his pocket and busted out the Verizon MiFi and seconds later was sharing his snaps.

How It Works

The Intelligent Mobile Hotspot is your portable, wireless Wi-Fi hotspot. From wherever you are in the coverage area, it detects the Verizon Wireless network and allows you to access a reliable broadband connection.

In Wi-Fi mode:

Connect up to five Wi-Fi-enabled devices at once. Use the lithium-ion battery for up to 4 hours (40 hours standby) of usage or plug the device directly into an outlet.

In USB mode:

Connect the MiFi device to your notebook via the included USB cable to use it as a modem.

How to Jailbreak and Unlock Firmware 3.1.2 using blackra1n/blacksn0w

On November 3, 2009 it was a big day for the iPhone/iPod users.

1. You have to download blackra1n.
2. Click the Downloads button and click on the blackra1n RC3 link to download it.
3. Connect your iPhone to your computer and open the blackra1n application.

4. Click the make it ra1n button.

5. blackra1n will now put your iPhone in to recovery mode and display the above image of Geohot. While in recovery mode, blackra1n will jailbreak your device.

6. Once blackra1n is done jailbreaking, your iPhone will reboot and you should see the blackra1n icon on your iPhone or iPod touch screen.

7. Tap the blackra1n icon to open it. Tap on Cydia, Rock, and blacksn0w and then click the Install button to install them.

8. Once you’ve installed the applications, restart your iPhone. To do that, just hold down the top button until the Slide to power off message appears. Slide the button, and wait for your device to turn off. Turn on your device and you should now see the applications you selected on your iPhone.

When Apple released the iPhone 3.1 firmware, it updated the baseband (modem firmware) for all iPhone 3G and 3GS users and fixed an exploit that allowed iPhone users to software unlock their iPhones. While there were some iPhone users that were smart enough to wait and update using iPhone Dev Team’s PwnageTool software, many people still updated through iTunes unknowingly and their unlock was compromised. While the firmware on an iPhone can be downgraded, baseband upgrades are permanent. For months iPhone owners that had their baseband (or modem firmware) updated to version 5.11.07 were left without an unlock. Yesterday, the Dev-Team annouced about the 3.1.2 firmware.... The question is their going to be an unlock???

Yesterday the Dev-Team posted the iPhone/iPod software update. For many of you are asking is their still going to be an unlock or not. Here what the Dev-Team said "
If you care about your jailbreak and unlock, don’t update your device - 3G and 3G(S) owners should pay particular attention to this warning.

PwnageTool and redsn0w are not yet compatible with 3.1.2
There is no estimated release time for compatible tools (please don’t bug us about this).

Update: geohot released a Windows jailbreak called “blackra1n” which is similar to redsn0w in that it covers multiple devices (and it covers beyond just firmware 3.0.1 where redsn0w currently stops). blackra1n is not a carrier unlock. You must always avoid updating your baseband to maintain your unlockability. If you use blackra1n to jailbreak 3.1 or 3.1.2, the steps you take before running blackra1n will prevent the unlock from working on your iPhone for potentially a very long time. By the way, we haven’t yet tested whether a blackra1n’d device can accept a custom IPSW without tweaks, but if it doesn’t then it should only require a minor change." Well folks their you have it. iPhone MMS is coming to AT&T today on iPhone 3G/iPhone 3GS 3.1

AT&T promised that they will bring iPhone MMS to the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS today. They have not announced any specific time, but they have said that it will be at late morning, Pacific time.
Many people are looking forward to the launch of MMS. I’ve searched on Twitter and there are a lot of tweets that people are posting about iPhone MMS. It’s amazing how so many people are looking forward to this service. Of course, MMS is FREE.
iTunes 9.0.1
To prepare for the iPhone MMS update, download iTunes 9.0.1 and make sure your iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS is using iPhone 3.1 firmware. The iPhone 2G or 1 G will not get an MMS update! If you still cannot wait for AT&T to release the update, you can enable MMS on iPhone 3G/iPhone 3GS 3.1 with a hack, but it may or may not work. HTC Touch Pro 2 coming to Verizon

Today, Verizon announced in a press release that the HTC Touch Pro 2 will be available online at www.verizonwireless.com and in stores on Friday, September 11. The price is $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and a 2-year contract. The HTC Touch Pro 2 will be available in Black.
The phone uses Windows Mobile. Key features of Verizon’s HTC Touch Pro 2 include a 3.6 inch touch screen, QWERTY keyboard, 3.2 megapixel camera, TouchFLO 3D interface, 512 MB ROM, Quad comm 528 MHz processor, and WiFi. You can read the full specs at Verizon’s press release page.

iPhone 3.1.2: Carrier update

The recently released iPhone 2.1.2 update also includes a carrier update for AT&T iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS users. The carrier is updated to AT&T 5.6. The baseband/modem firmware for the iPhone 3.1.2 update still remains at 05.11.07 (which currenty cannot be unlocked).

How to update iPhone 3.1.2 carrier settings

1. Download and install the iPhone 3.1.2 firmware to your iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS.

2. Once the iPhone 3.1.2 firmware is installed,iTunes will display a message saying: “An update to the carrier settings for your iPhone is available. Would you like to download it now?“. Click Download and Update.

3. Once you’ve clicked the download and update button, iTunes will automatically update your carrier settings and display the following message: “Your iPhone carrier settings were updated successfully“. That’s it, you’re done!
I’m not sure what is included in these new carrier settings. Last time Apple issued the carrier settings to enable MMS on AT&T, maybe these carrier settings will enable VoIP over 3G, now that AT&T is allowing Skype to use 3G. Writter -John A.

Jailbreak and unlock iPhone 3.1.2

Today the iPhone 3.1.2 update was released to iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPod Touch usres. This update includes mainly bug fixes. If you would like to jailbreak or unlock your device, you must read this. If you have an unlocked iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS do not update to this new firmware, updating to the iPhone 3.1.2 firmware will permanently update your baseband. The newer baseband does not support software unlocking.
The jailbreak has not been released yet, but you if you’ve got too much time on your hands you may be able to jailbreak if you try the following. If this works please share your results in the comments.
How to Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2Jailbreak and unlock iPhone 3.1
1. Update to iPhone 3.1.2. After updating, find your iPhone 3.1.2 IPSW file or download it using any of the links below. Remember, don’t use Safari to download. Safari can’t download .IPSW files properly, use a different browser!

Unlock iPhone 3.1.2
It’s possible to unlock iPhone 3.1.2 but only if your baseband has not been updated to 05.11.07 or the newer baseband, you must create a custom firmware that uses the 04.26.08 baseband. The iPhone 3.1.2 update updates the baseband to a newer one that permanently blocks the software unlock. A guide on how to unlock iPhone 3.1.2 will be up once a jailbreak tool is released.
