Bicentenario de la Independencia de México 200 años de libertad.

Este año México celebra el bicentenario de su independencia, al igual que Colombia, Argentina, Chile y Venezuela.

El proceso de la independencia de México fue uno de los más largos de América Latina. La lucha duró once años, la independencia de México se consumó el 27 de septiembre de 1821. La Nueva España permaneció bajo el control de la Corona por unos tres siglos. Sin embargo, a finales del siglo XVIII, ciertos cambios en la estructura social, económica y política de la colonia llevaron a una élite ilustrada de novohispanos a reflexionar acerca de su relación con España. Sin subestimar la influencia de la Ilustración, la Revolución Francesa ni la independencia de Estados Unidos, el hecho que llevó a la élite criolla a comenzar el movimiento emancipador fue la ocupación francesa de España, en 1808. Hay que recordar que en ese año, Carlos IV y Fernando VII abdicaron sucesivamente en favor de José Bonaparte, de modo que España quedó como una especie de protectorado francés.

El 16 de septiembre de 1810, llevando un estandarte con la imagen de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, patrona de México, Hidalgo lanzó el llamado grito de Dolores que inició la revuelta. Una vez congregada la población frente a la iglesia, el cura Hidalgo pronuncia un emotivo sermón, al final del cual grita: "¡Viva la Virgen de Guadalupe!, ¡Abajo el mal gobierno!”

El movimiento independentista mexicano tiene como marco la Ilustración y las revoluciones liberales de la última parte del siglo XVIII. Por esa época la élite ilustrada comenzaba a reflexionar acerca de las relaciones de España con sus colonias. Los cambios en la estructura social y política derivados de las reformas borbónicas, a los que se sumó una profunda crisis económica en Nueva España, también generaron un malestar entre algunos segmentos de la población.

La ocupación francesa de la metrópoli en 1808 desencadenó en Nueva España una crisis política que desembocó en el movimiento armado. En ese año, el rey Carlos IV y Fernando VII abdicaron sucesivamente en favor de Napoleón Bonaparte, que dejó la corona de España a su hermano José Bonaparte. Como respuesta, el ayuntamiento de México —con apoyo del virrey José de Iturrigaray— reclamó la soberanía en ausencia del rey legítimo; la reacción condujo a un golpe de Estado contra el virrey y llevó a la cárcel a los cabecillas del movimiento.

A pesar de la derrota de los criollos en la Ciudad de México en 1808, en otras ciudades de Nueva España se reunieron pequeños grupos de conjurados que pretendieron seguir los pasos del ayuntamiento de México. Tal fue el caso de la conjura de Valladolid, descubierta en 1809 y cuyos participantes fueron puestos en prisión. En 1810, los conspiradores de Querétaro estuvieron a punto de correr la misma suerte pero, al verse descubiertos, optaron por tomar las armas el 16 de septiembre en compañía de los habitantes indígenas y campesinos del pueblo de Dolores (Guanajuato), convocados por el cura Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla.

A partir de 1810, el movimiento independentista pasó por varias etapas, pues los sucesivos líderes fueron puestos en prisión o ejecutados por las fuerzas leales a España. Al principio se reivindicaba la soberanía de Fernando VII sobre España y sus colonias, pero los líderes asumieron después posturas más radicales, incluyendo cuestiones de orden social como la abolición de la esclavitud. José María Morelos y Pavón convocó a las provincias independentistas a conformar el Congreso de Anáhuac, que dotó al movimiento insurgente de un marco legal propio. Tras la derrota de Morelos, el movimiento se redujo a una guerra de guerrillas. Hacia 1820, sólo quedaban algunos núcleos rebeldes, sobre todo en la sierra Madre del Sur y en Veracruz. La rehabilitación de la Constitución de Cádiz en 1820 alentó el cambio de postura de las élites novohispanas, que hasta ahí habían respaldado el dominio español. Al ver afectados sus intereses, los criollos monarquistas decidieron apoyar la independencia de Nueva España, para lo cual buscaron aliarse con la resistencia insurgente. Agustín de Iturbide dirigió el brazo militar de los conspiradores, y a principios de 1821 pudo encontrarse con Vicente Guerrero. Ambos proclamaron el Plan de Iguala, que convocó a la unión de todas las facciones insurgentes y contó con el apoyo de la aristocracia y el clero de Nueva España. Finalmente, la independencia de México se consumó el 27 de septiembre de 1821.

Tras esto, Nueva España se convirtió en el Imperio Mexicano, una efímera monarquía católica que dio paso a una república federal en 1823, entre conflictos internos y la separación de América Central.

Después de algunos intentos de reconquista, incluyendo la expedición de Isidro Barradas en 1829, España reconoció la independencia de México en 1836, tras el fallecimiento del monarca Fernando VII.

El Acta de Independencia del Imperio Mexicano es el documento fundador de dicho imperio y por ende, de la nación mexicana.

Un día después de la entrada del Ejército Trigarante a la ciudad de México, el 28 de septiembre de 1821, Agustín de Iturbide ordenó que la Suprema Junta Provisional Gubernativa sesionase temprano para elegir al Presidente de la Regencia del Imperio y por la tarde suscribiera el Acta de Independencia de la nueva nación

Las “Posadas” son fiestas populares que en México se celebran durante los nueve días antes de Navidad, entre el día 16 al 24 de Diciembre. Las “Posadas” es una de las tradiciones mexicanas mas arraigadas y representativas. Sin duda alguna “las Posadas” con todos los elementos que se involucran la piñata, la colación, el nacimiento, los santos peregrinos, la procesión, los aguinaldos, la letanía, el ponche de frutas y no puede faltar la música y el baile que se volvieron parte de esta celebración en el México actual.

Historia:

Su origen se remonta a los tiempos de la conquista, cuando los españoles llegaron a México, los aztecas creían que durante el solsticio de invierno, el dios Quetzalcóatl (el sol viejo) bajaba a visitarlos. Cuarenta días antes de la fiesta, compraban los mercaderes a un esclavo en buenas condiciones y lo vestían con los ropajes del mismo dios Quetzalcóatl. Antes de vestirlo, lo purificaban lavándolo. Salían con él a la ciudad y él iba cantando y bailando para ser reconocido como un dios. Las mujeres y los niños le ofrecían ofrendas. En la noche, lo enjaulaban y lo alimentaban muy bien.

Nueve días antes de la fiesta, venían ante él dos "ancianos muy venerables del templo" y se humillaban ante él. Durante la ceremonia, le decían: "Señor, sabrás que de aquí a nueve días se te acabará este trabajo de bailar y cantar porque entonces has de morir". Él debía responder: "Que sea muy en hora buena". Llegado el día de la fiesta, a media noche, después de honrarlo con música e incienso, lo tomaban los sacrificadores y le sacaban el corazón para ofrecérselo a la luna. Ese día en los templos se hacían grandes ceremonias, dirigidas por los sacerdotes, que incluían ritos y bailables sagrados, representando la llegada de Quetzalcóatl, así como ofrendas y sacrificios humanos en honor a él.

Durante el mes de diciembre, no sólo festejaban a Quetzalcóatl, sino que también celebraban las fiestas en honor a Huitzilopochtli. Estas fiestas duraban veinte días, iniciaban el 6 de diciembre y terminaban el 26 del mismo mes, eran fiestas solemnes que estaban precedidas por 4 días de ayuno y en las que se coronaba al dios Huitzilopochtli poniendo banderas en los árboles frutales. Esto es a lo que llamaban el "levantamiento de banderas". En el gran templo ponían el estandarte del dios y le rendían culto.

El pueblo se congregaba en los patios de los templos, iluminados por enormes fogatas para esperar la llegada del solsticio de invierno. El 24 de diciembre por la noche y al día siguiente, 25 de diciembre, había fiestas en todas las casas. Se ofrecía a los invitados una rica comida y unas estatuas pequeñas de pasta llamada "tzoatl".

Los misioneros españoles que llegaron a México a finales del siglo XVI, aprovecharon estas costumbres religiosas para inculcar en los indígenas el espíritu evangélico y dieron a las fiestas aztecas un sentido cristianos, lo que serviría como preparación para recibir a Jesús en su corazón el día de Navidad.

En 1587 el superior del convento de San Agustín de Acolman, Fray Diego de Soria, obtuvo del Papa Sixto V, un permiso que autorizaba en la nueva España la celebración de unas Misas llamadas "de aguinaldos" del 16 al 24 de diciembre. En estas Misas, se intercalaban pasajes y escenas de la Navidad. Para hacerlas más atractivas y amenas, se les agregaron luces de bengala, cohetes y villancicos y posteriormente, la piñata.

En San Agustín de Acolman, con los misioneros agustinos, fue donde tuvieron origen las posadas. Los misioneros convocaban al pueblo al atrio de las iglesias y conventos y ahí rezaban una novena, que se iniciaba con el rezo del Santo Rosario, acompañada de cantos y representaciones basadas en el Evangelio, como recordatorio de la espera del Niño y del peregrinar de José y María de Nazaret a Belén para empadronarse. Las posadas se llevaban a cabo los nueve días previos a la Navidad, simbolizando los nueve meses de espera de María. Al terminar, los monjes repartían a los asistentes fruta y dulces como signo de las gracias que recibían aquellos que aceptaban la doctrina de Jesús.

Las posadas, con el tiempo, se comenzaron a llevar a cabo en barrios y en casas, pasando a la vida familiar. Estas comienzan con el rezo del Rosario y el canto de las letanías. Durante el canto, los asistentes forman dos filas que terminan con 2 niños que llevan unas imágenes de la Santísima Virgen y de San José: los peregrinos que iban a Belén. Al terminar las letanías se dividen en dos grupos: uno entra a la casa y otro pide posada imitando a San José y la Santísima Virgen cuando llegaron a Belén. Los peregrinos reciben acogida por parte del grupo que se encuentra en el interior. Luego sigue la fiesta con el canto de villancicos y se termina rompiendo las piñatas y distribuyendo los "aguinaldos".

Traditional elements of Christmas

Whether you are experiencing one or all of these feelings here are my 5 best tips on reducing the unwanted feelings so that you will feel calm and satisfied with yourself each day.$$$

1. Catch yourself when you exhibit a feeling of behavior that you don't like and change it.
At first you may not notice the feeling until after you have gone through it, that's fine.

Think about how you would rather have felt.

Think about how you would rather have handled yourself. Decide how you want to do it next time.

As you continue with this process each day you will find that you will notice more easily what you are doing throughout the day.

You will begin to catch yourself earlier and earlier as you do this.

Eventually, you will be seeing yourself while you are doing it, then stop yourself.

At some point you will be able to notice before you even begin to feel and react in the undesirable way.

Here is where you will actually begin to change the way you react to the situations in your life and change your behavior.

2. Stay centered all day by refocusing throughout the day.
Develop the habit of paying attention to your mindset as the day goes on.

Several times a day, step away from what you are doing to get re-centered.

Sit down close your eyes and take several long slow deep breaths while imagining the tension washing slowly out of your body.

Notice your breathing getting slower and calmer.

Just think about your breath.

Try to keep from thinking about anything in particular.

It's ok to not be actively thinking for a while!

3. Watch out for your expectations.
You are setting yourself up for failure, upset and frustration when you set too many standards as to how you think things should be.

Think about what leads you to getting upset?

Why does it upset you?

Notice that you decide how many things should be, based on your own outlook and desire.

The things others do that are not to your liking, even the things you do that don't match your expectations.

Ask yourself, really how important is it that they be exactly that way

Ask, who am I to insist that they are that way?

Does it matter that much?

Is it worth getting myself worked up about?

Choose which expectations are really important for you to hold on to and which ones are not.

Holding on to many expectations just complicates your life, with constant judgment.

Simplify your life and reduce the stress!

4. Delegate.
This applies to your personal life as well as at work.

Most of us think of delegating as a workplace skill, but it can apply personally as well.

We are all very busy these days with our activities and duties.

Trying to fit it all in and get it all accomplished can lead to tension.

For various reasons, many of us have developed the habit of thinking we must do it all ourselves.

Take a look at your situation.

Think about it, really, how important is it that everything must be done perfectly to your standards?

Are you sure there are not other people who can assist you. Are the other people in your life pulling their weight?

Many times we get into habitual ruts that don't need to be as they are.

Look at what has been, with the eye of reducing the pressure on yourself.

5. Accept other people as one.
As you think of yourself as different and separate from the rest of mankind, you unknowingly create thinking and behavior that separates you from others.

This kind of separate thinking leads us to think we are superior to others which leads to judgment then selfish thinking and behavior.

We are then having an internal battle with others, which brings on fear, competition and comparison, ending in frustration and anxiety.

Look to discovering how to see yourself as one with all of mankind, not as separate.

Focus on what we have in common rather that the relatively small uniqueness.

The science is clear: global warming is happening faster than ever and humans are responsible. Global warming is caused by releasing what are called greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The most common greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide. Many of the activities we do every day like turn the lights on, cook food, or heat or cool our homes rely on energy sources like coal and oil that emit carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases. This is a major problem because global warming destabilizes the delicate balance that makes life on this planet possible. Just a few degrees in temperature can completely change the world as we know it, and threaten the lives of millions of people around the world. But don't give up hope! You can help stop global warming by taking action here at 350.org.

We need an international agreement to reduce carbon emissions fast, and 2009 might be our best shot.

The United Nations is working on a global climate treaty, which is supposed to be completed in December of 2009 at a conference in Copenhagen, Denmark. But the current plans for the treaty are much too weak to get us back to safety. This treaty needs to put a high enough price on carbon that we stop using so much. It also needs to ensure poor countries a fair chance to develop.

10 cosas que hay que saber sobre la gripe pandémica

1. La gripe pandémica es distinta de la gripe aviar

El término "gripe aviar" designa las afecciones causadas por un gran grupo de virus de la gripe que afectan principalmente a las aves. Aunque en raras ocasiones pueden infectar a otras especies (entre ellas el cerdo y el ser humano), la inmensa mayoría de esos virus aviares no infectan a las personas. Una gripe pandémica sobreviene cuando aparece un nuevo subtipo con el que nunca antes había estado en contacto el ser humano.

Por ello el virus aviar H5N1 es una cepa dotada de potencial pandémico, pues podría acabar adquiriendo rasgos que la hicieran contagiosa de persona a persona. Una vez consumada esa adaptación, dejaría de ser un virus aviar para constituir un virus gripal humano. Las pandemias de gripe son causadas por nuevos virus gripales que se han adaptado al ser humano.

2. Las pandemias de gripe son episodios recurrentes.

Una pandemia de gripe es un episodio inusual, pero recurrente. En el siglo pasado hubo tres: la de “gripe española” en 1918, la de “gripe asiática” en 1957, y la de “gripe de Hong Kong” en 1968. Según las estimaciones, la pandemia de 1918 causó la muerte de entre 40 y 50 millones de personas en todo el mundo. Fue una pandemia excepcional, considerada uno de los episodios infecciosos más mortíferos de la historia de la humanidad. Las pandemias posteriores fueron mucho más benignas: se calcula que la de 1957 mató a 2 millones de personas, y la de 1968 a 1 millón.

Una pandemia se produce al surgir un nuevo virus de la gripe que empieza a propagarse con la misma facilidad que una gripe normal, por la tos y los estornudos. Dado que el virus es nuevo, y que por ello el sistema inmunitario humano no lo reconoce, es probable que las personas que contraigan la gripe pandémica sufran una enfermedad más grave que una gripe normal.

3. El mundo puede estar al borde de una nueva pandemia.

Los expertos en salud llevan casi ocho años siguiendo de cerca un nuevo y peligroso virus de la gripe: la cepa H5N1. En 1997, en Hong Kong, esta cepa infectó al hombre por primera vez y causó 18 casos, seis de ellos fatales. Desde mediados de 2003 ha provocado en las aves de corral los brotes más graves y de mayor magnitud de los que se tiene constancia. En diciembre de 2003 se observó que el virus había infectado a personas que habían estado en contacto con aves enfermas.

Desde entonces se han confirmado con pruebas de laboratorio más de 100 casos de infección humana por el virus en cuatro países asiáticos (Camboya, Indonesia, Tailandia y Viet Nam). Más de la mitad de esos casos se han saldado con la muerte del enfermo. La mayoría de los infectados eran niños y adultos jóvenes que hasta entonces gozaban de buena salud. Por fortuna, el virus no salta fácilmente de las aves al hombre ni se propaga de forma sencilla y duradera entre las personas. Si la cepa H5N1 evolucionara hacia una forma tan contagiosa como la gripe normal, podría declararse una pandemia.

4. Todos los países se verán afectados.

Una vez aparecido un virus muy contagioso, se considera inevitable que llegue a extenderse por todo el mundo. Adoptando medidas como el cierre de fronteras o las restricciones de los viajes, un país podría retrasar, pero no impedir, la llegada del virus. Las pandemias del siglo XX necesitaron entre 6 y 9 meses para dar la vuelta al planeta, aunque por entonces la mayor parte de los viajes internacionales se hacían por mar. Hoy en día, teniendo en cuenta la velocidad y el volumen de los movimientos aéreos, el virus podría extenderse con más rapidez y, seguramente, llegar a todos los continentes en menos de 3 meses.

5. Resultarán contagiadas muchísimas personas.

Considerando que la mayoría de la gente carece de inmunidad contra el virus pandémico, se prevé que los índices de infección y morbilidad sean superiores a los registrados en las epidemias estacionales de gripe normal. Las actuales proyecciones sobre la próxima pandemia llevan a pensar que un sustancial porcentaje de la población del mundo necesitará algún tipo de atención médica. Pocos son los países que cuentan con el personal, las instalaciones, el equipo y las camas de hospital que se requieren para atender al gran número de personas que enfermarán repentinamente.

6. Faltarán suministros médicos.

Al principio de la pandemia, y durante muchos meses, ningún país dispondrá de un suministro suficiente de vacunas y fármacos antivirales (las dos intervenciones médicas más importantes para reducir el número de enfermos y muertos durante una pandemia). Preocupa especialmente la falta de vacunas, pues se considera que éstas son la primera línea de defensa para proteger a las poblaciones. Si las cosas siguen como hasta ahora, muchos países en desarrollo se verán privados de vacunas durante toda la pandemia.

7. Morirá mucha gente.

A lo largo de la historia, el número de muertos durante una pandemia ha sido muy variable. Los índices de mortalidad dependen básicamente de cuatro factores: el número de personas infectadas; la virulencia del virus; la vulnerabilidad y características de partida de las poblaciones afectadas; y la eficacia de las medidas preventivas. No es posible realizar predicciones fiables de mortalidad antes de que aparezca y empiece a propagarse el virus pandémico. Cualquier estimación del número de muertos resulta puramente especulativa.

La OMS viene manejando una estimación relativamente conservadora (de entre 2 y 7,4 millones de muertos) porque constituye un punto de referencia útil y plausible para el trabajo de planificación. Este cálculo se basa en la pandemia de 1957, que fue relativamente benigna. También se han hecho estimaciones partiendo del supuesto de una gripe más virulenta y parecida a la de 1918, y las cifras resultantes son mucho más altas. 8. Se producirá un gran trastorno económico y social.

Se prevén tasas elevadas de morbilidad y de bajas laborales , lo que contribuirá a perturbar la organización social y económica. En el pasado, las pandemias se extendieron por todo el globo en dos, o a veces tres, oleadas. No es probable que todas las zonas del planeta o de un solo país se vean gravemente afectadas al mismo tiempo. La OMS ha hecho públicas una serie de medidas estratégicas recomendadas para afrontar la amenaza de gripe pandémica, concebidas para contar con distintas líneas de defensa acordes con la complejidad de una situación sumamente lábil. Las medidas recomendadas para la actual fase de alerta ante el riesgo de pandemia no son las mismas que ante la eventual aparición y subsiguiente propagación internacional de un virus pandémico.

10. La OMS avisará al mundo cuando aumente el riesgo de pandemia

La OMS trabaja en estrecha colaboración con ministerios de salud y diversos organismos de salud pública para apoyar a los países en su labor de vigilancia de las cepas de gripe circulantes. Para detectar con prontitud un virus pandémico es fundamental disponer de un sistema de vigilancia sensible, capaz de localizar nuevas cepas gripales.

Para facilitar la planificación de cara a una posible pandemia se han definido seis fases distintas y asignado una serie de funciones a los gobiernos, la industria y la OMS. The United Nations celebrates an Earth Day each year on the March equinox, a tradition which was founded by peace activist John McConnell in 1969.

In September 1969 at a conference in Seattle, Washington, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin announced that in spring 1970 there would be a nationwide grassroots demonstration on the environment. This occurred during a time of great concern about overpopulation and when there was a strong movement towards "Zero Population Growth." On April 22, 1970 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment. Denis Hayes, the national coordinator, and his youthful staff organized massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values. The Results of Earth Day 1970

Earth Day proved popular in the United States and around the world. The first Earth Day had participants and celebrants in two thousand colleges and universities, roughly ten thousand primary and secondary schools, and hundreds of communities across the United States. More importantly, it "brought 20 million Americans out into the spring sunshine for peaceful demonstrations in favor of environmental reform."

Senator Nelson stated when that Earth Day "worked" because of the spontaneous response at the grassroots level. Twenty-million demonstrators and thousands of schools and local communities participated. He directly credited the first Earth Day with persuading U.S. politicians that environmental legislation had a substantial, lasting constituency. Many important laws were passed by the Congress in the wake of the 1970 Earth Day, including the Clean Air Act, wild lands and the ocean, and the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

It is now observed in 175 countries, and coordinated by the nonprofit Earth Day Network, according to whom Earth Day is now "the largest secular holiday in the world, celebrated by more than a half billion people every year." Environmental groups have sought to make Earth Day into a day of action which changes human behavior and provokes policy changes.

Blacksmith Institute in collaboration with Green Cross Switzerland issued a Top Ten list of the world’s most dangerous pollution problems. The report names pollution as one of the leading contributing factors to death and disability in the world and highlights the disproportionate effects on the health of children.

The Top Ten list includes commonly discussed pollution problems like urban air pollution as well as more overlooked threats like car battery recycling. The problems included in the report have a significant impact on human health worldwide and result in death, persistent illness, and neurological impairment for millions of people, particularly children. There are three primary factors taken into consideration when ranking the Toxic Twenty and Top Ten: Pollutant, Pathway and Population. More innocuous contaminants receive a lower ranking, while those more dangerous substances, say mercury or lead, receive a higher ranking.

1. Earth Hour 2009 takes place on March 28, 2009 at 8:30 pm—local time.
2. The date was set in March because it is close to the Spring Equinox, a period when the most number of countries around the world will experience darkness in the 8 o’clock hour.
3. Earth Hour isn’t about how much energy is saved during one hour. The idea behind Earth Hour is that by working together, each one of us can make a difference on the issue of climate change. By doing something as simple as turning off the lights, we send a visual symbol to the world’s leaders that we are counting on them to work together to find solutions to climate change.
4. Earth Hour is a non-partisan event. When it comes to caring about the future of our planet, we all have a stake as citizens of the world regardless of other political beliefs and affiliations.
5. Earth Hour turns off non-essential lighting only. Lights necessary for public safety will not go out. Earth Hour has been conducted safely and without incident in more than 100 cities around the world.
6. Earth Hour is an inclusive event and everyone is invited to participate. WWF will provide tools online to enable any town, community, school, individual or organization to be part of the event.
7. WWF has designated a limited number of “flagship cities” in the US where it will devote resources to make sure the lights actually do go out. In 2009 those cities include: Atlanta, Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, Dallas, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, DC. In addition, WWF will be seeking the support of Washington DC and the federal government.
8. Many US cities will also participate as “supporting cities.” To become an official supporting city, a proclamation or some type of official confirmation that the event is supported by the local governing body of that community must be sent to WWF.
9. More than 750 cities throughout the world have already agreed to participate in Earth Hour 2009.
10. World Wildlife Fund is the organization behind Earth Hour, but many other groups and NGOs are supporting Earth Hour in 2009.

The day is the national holiday of Ireland. It is a bank holiday in Northern Ireland and a public holiday in the

Republic of Ireland and Montserrat. In Canada, Great Britain, Australia, the United States and New Zealand, it is widely celebrated but is not an official holiday.

St. Patrick’s day origins

It became a feast day in the Roman Catholic Church due to the influence of the Waterford-born Franciscan scholar Luke Wadding in the early part of the 17th century, and is a holy day of obligation for Roman Catholics in Ireland. The feast day usually falls during Lent; if

it falls on a Friday of Lent (unless it is Good Friday), the obligation to abstain from eating meat can be lifted by the local bishop. The date of the feast is occasionally, yet controversially, moved by church authorities when March 17 falls during Holy Week; this happened in 1940 when Saint Patrick's Day was observed on April 3 in order to avoid it coinciding with Palm Sunday, and happened again in 2008, having been observed on 15 March.

Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated worldwide by the those of Irish descent and increasingly by non-Irish people (usually in New Zealand and North America). Celebrations are generally themed around all things Irish and, by association, the color green. Both Christians and non-Christians celebrate the secular version of the holiday by wearing green, eating Irish food and/or green foods, imbibing Irish drink (such as Irish stout, Irish Whiskey or Irish Cream) and attending parades.

Celebrations In The United States

Irish Society of Boston organized what was the first Saint Patrick's Day Parade in the colonies on 17 March 1737. The first celebration of Saint Patrick's Day in New York City was held at the Crown and Thistle Tavern in 1756, and New York's first Saint Patrick's Day Parade was held on 17 March 1762 by Irish soldiers in the British Army. In 1780, General George Washington, who commanded soldiers of Irish descent in the Continental Army, allowed his troops a holiday on 17 March “as an act of solidarity with the Irish in their fight for independence." This event became known as The St. Patrick's Day Encampment of 1780. Today, Saint Patrick's Day is widely celebrated in America by Irish and non-Irish alike.

Americans celebrate the holiday by wearing green clothing. Many people, regardless of ethnic background, wear green-colored clothing and items. Traditionally, those who are caught not wearing green are pinched.

Some cities paint the traffic stripe of their parade routes green. Chicago dyes its river green and has done so since 1961 when sewer workers used green dye to check for sewer discharges and got the idea to turn the river green for St. Patrick's Day. Indianapolis also dyes its main canal green. Savannah dyes its downtown city fountains green. Missouri University of Science and Technology - St Pat's Board Alumni paint 12 city blocks Kelly green with mops before the annual parade. In Jamestown, New York, the Chadakoin River (a small tributary that connects Conewango Creek with its source at Chautauqua Lake) is dyed green each year.

International Women's Day (8 March) is an occasion marked by women's groups around the world. This date is also commemorated at the United Nations and is designated in many countries as a national holiday. When women on all continents, often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, come together to celebrate their Day, they can look back to a tradition that represents at least nine decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development.

International Women's Day is the story of ordinary women as makers of history; it is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men. In ancient Greece, Lysistrata initiated a sexual strike against men in order to end war; during the French Revolution, Parisian women calling for "liberty, equality, fraternity" marched on Versailles to demand women's suffrage.

International Women's Day 2008: Investing in Women and Girls

The idea of an International Women's Day first arose at the turn of the century, which in the industrialized world was a period of expansion and turbulence, booming population growth and radical ideologies. Following is a brief chronology of the most important events:

1909 In accordance with a declaration by the Socialist Party of America, the first National Woman's Day was observed across the United States on 28 February. Women continued to celebrate it on the last Sunday of that month through 1913.
1910 The Socialist International, meeting in Copenhagen, established a Women's Day, international in character, to honour the movement for women's rights and to assist in achieving universal suffrage for women. The proposal was greeted with unanimous approval by the conference of over 100 women from 17 countries, which included the first three women elected to the Finnish parliament. No fixed date was selected for the observance.
1911 As a result of the decision taken at Copenhagen the previous year, International Women's Day was marked for the first time (19 March) in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, where more than one million women and men attended rallies. In addition to the right to vote and to hold public office, they demanded the right to work, to vocational training and to an end to discrimination on the job.

Less than a week later, on 25 March, the tragic Triangle Fire in New York City took the lives of more than 140 working girls, most of them Italian and Jewish immigrants. This event had a significant impact on labour legislation in the United States, and the working conditions leading up to the disaster were invoked during subsequent observances of International Women's Day.

1913-1914 As part of the peace movement brewing on the eve of World War I, Russian women observed their first International Women's Day on the last Sunday in February 1913. Elsewhere in Europe, on or around 8 March of the following year, women held rallies either to protest the war or to express solidarity with their sisters.
1917 With 2 million Russian soldiers dead in the war, Russian women again chose the last Sunday in February to strike for "bread and peace". Political leaders opposed the timing of the strike, but the women went on anyway. The rest is history: Four days later the Czar was forced to abdicate and the provisional Government granted women the right to vote. That historic Sunday fell on 23 February on the Julian calendar then in use in Russia, but on 8 March on the Gregorian calendar in use elsewhere.

Since those early years, International Women's Day has assumed a new global dimension for women in developed and developing countries alike. The growing international women's movement, which has been strengthened by four global United Nations women's conferences, has helped make the commemoration a rallying point for coordinated efforts to demand women's rights and participation in the political and economic process. Increasingly, International Women's Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of women's rights.

Este suceso tuvo grandes repercusiones en la legislación laboral de los Estados Unidos,y en las celebraciones posteriores del Día Internacional de la Mujer se hizo referencia a las condiciones laborales que condujeron al desastre.

1917 Como reacción ante los 2 millones de soldados rusos muertos en la guerra, las mujeres rusas escogieron de nuevo el último domingo de febrero para declararse en huelga en demanda de "pan y paz". Los dirigentes políticos criticaron la oportunidad de la huelga, pero las mujeres la hicieron de todos modos. El resto es historia: cuatro días después el Zar se vio obligado a abdicar y el gobierno provisional concedió a las mujeres el derecho de voto. Carnival begins 12 days after Christmas, or Twelfth Night, on January 6 and ends on Mardi Gras, which always falls exactly 47 days before Easter. Perhaps the cities most famous for their Mardi Gras celebrations include New Orleans, Louisiana; Venice, Italy; and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. When Christianity arrived in Rome, the dignitaries of the early Church decided it would be more prudent to incorporate certain aspects of such rituals into the new faith rather than attempt to abolish them altogether. This granted a Christian interpretation to the ancient custom and the Carnival became a time of abandon and merriment which preceded the Lenten period (a symbolic Christian pertinence of 40 days commencing on Ash Wednesday and ending at Easter). During this time, there would be feasting which lasted several days and participants would indulge in voluntary madness by donning masks, clothing themselves in the likeness of spectres and generally giving themselves up to Bacchus and Venus. All aspects of pleasure were considered to be allowable during the Carnival celebration and today’s modern festivities are thought by some to be more reminiscent of the Roman Saturnalia rather than Lupercalia, or be linked to even earlier Pagan festivals.

From Rome, the celebration spread to other European countries. In medieval times, a similar-type festivity to that of the present day Mardi Gras was given by monarchs and lords prior to Lent in order to ceremoniously conscript new knights into service and hold feasts in their honor. The landed gentry would also ride through the countryside rewarding peasants with cakes (thought by some to be the origin of the King Cake), coins (perhaps the origin of present day gifts of Mardi Gras doubloons) and other trinkets. In Germany, there still remains a Carnival similar to that of the one held in New Orleans. Known as Fasching, the celebrations begin on Twelfth Night and continue until Shrove Tuesday. To a lesser degree, this festivity is still celebrated in France and Spain. A Carn ival season was also celebrated in England until the Nineteenth Century, originating as a type of "renewal" festival that incorporated fertility motifs and ball games which frequently turned into riots between opposing villages, followed by feasts of pancakes and the imbibing of alcohol. The preparing and consumption of pancakes on Shrove Tuesday (also known as "Pancake Day" or "Pancake Tuesday" and occurring annually between February 2 and March 9, depending upon the date of Easter) is a still a tradition in the United Kingdom, where pancake tossing and pancake races (during which a pancake must be tossed a certain number of times) are still popular. One of the most famous of such competitions, which takes place in Olney, Buckinghamshire, is said to date from 1445. It is a race for women only and for those who have lived in the Parish for at least three months. An apron and head-covering are requisite. The course is 415 yards and the pancake must be tossed at least three times during the race. The winner receives a kiss from the Ringer of the Pancake Bell and a prayer book from the local vicar. "Shrove" is derived from the Old English word "shrive," which means to "confess all sins."

It is generally accepted that Mardi Gras came to America in 1699 with the French explorer, Sieur d'Iberville. The festival had been celebrated as a major holiday in Paris since the middle Ages. Iberville sailed into the Gulf of Mexico and, from there, launched an expedition along the Mississippi River. By March 3, 1699, Iberville had set up a camp on the West Bank of the River...about 60 miles south of the present day City of New Orleans in the State of Louisiana. Since that day was the very one on which Mardi Gras was being celebrated in France, Iberville named the site Point du Mardi Gras in honor of the festival. According to some sources, however, the Mardi Gras of New Orleans began in 1827 when a group of students who had recently returned from school in Paris donned strange costumes and danced their way through the streets. The students had first experienced this revelry while taking part in celebrations they had witnessed in Paris. In this version, it is said that the inhabitants of New Orleans were swiftly captured by the enthusiasm of the youths and quickly followed suit. Other sources maintain that the Mardi Gras celebration originated with the arrival of early French settlers to the State of Louisiana. Nevertheless, it is known that from 1827 to 1833, the New Orleans' Mardi Gras celebrations became more elaborate, culminating in an annual Mardi Gras Ball. Although the exact date of the first revelries cannot be determined, the Carnival was well-established by the middle of the Nineteenth Century when the Mystick Krewe of Comus presented its 1857 Torchlight Parade with a theme taken from "Paradise Lost" written by John Milton

The traditional colors of Mardi Gras are purple (symbolic of justice), green (symbolic of faith) and gold (symbolic of power). The accepted story behind the original selection of these colors originates from 1872 when the Grand Duke Alexis Romanoff of Russia visited New Orleans. It is said that the Grand Duke came to the city in pursuit of an actress named Lydia Thompson. During his stay, he was given the honor of selecting the official Mardi Gras colors by the Krewe of Rex...thus, did these colors also become the colors of the House of Romanoff. The 1892 Rex Parade theme (" Symbolism of Colors") first gave meaning to the representation of the official Mardi Gras colors. Interestingly, the colors of Mardi Gras influenced the choice of school colors for the Lousiana arch-rival colleges, Louisiana State University and Tulane University. Whe LSU was deciding on its colors, the stores in New Orleans had stocked-up on fabrics of purple, green and gold for the upcoming Mardi Gras Season. LSU, opting for purple and gold, bought a large quantity of the available cloth. Tulane purchased much of the only remaining color...green (Tulane's colors are green and white).

In Mexico, there are big Carnival celebrations every year in Mazatlán, which has "The third largest Mardi Gras in the world", and Veracruz, which that include the election of a queen and street parades. There is also a week-long Carnival or Mardi Gras celebration in Mérida, Yucatán.

El Día de San Valentín es una celebración tradicional en la que los amigos, enamorados, novios o esposos expresan su amor o cariño mutuamente. Se celebra el 14 de febrero, onomástico de san Valentín. En algunos países se llama Día de los Enamorados y en otros como Día del Amor y la Amistad.

A esta práctica se sumó el dar otro tipo de regalos como rosas y chocolates, normalmente regalados a las mujeres por los hombres. Es común el regalo de rosas entre los amigos y familiares. Tal es así que según el color de la rosa se está expresando un mensaje. Por ejemplo: la rosa roja simboliza el amor, la blanca representa la paz y la amarilla la amistad.

El moderno Día de San Valentín fue importado a EE. UU. en el siglo XIX por los británicos. Las primeras postales (valentines) producidos en masa datan de 1847, creadas por la artista y empresaria estadounidense Esther Howland (1828-1904).

Celebración en distintos países

El Día de San Valentín es típicamente occidental, pues se remonta a la Antigua Grecia y a Roma, pero actualmente se ha extendido a otros países, como China, Japón y Taiwán.

En Brasil el llamado 'Dia dos Namorados' (día de los enamorados) es el 12 de junio. Las parejas de novios cambian regalos y tarjetas.

En Bolivia se festeja el 21 de septiembre, que se conoce como Día del Estudiante, de la Juventud, de la Primavera y el Amor, aunque generalmente se festeja esto último. En ese día se tiene por costumbre regalar tarjetas, flores, chocolates y osos de peluche. Esta fecha da inicio a la estación de la Primavera.

En China ya existía el Qi Qiao Jie (día para mostrar las habilidades’), celebrado el séptimo día del séptimo mes del calendario lunar.

En Chile se conoce como día de los enamorados, siendo un día donde las parejas (sea pololos, novios o esposos) celebran el amor y la unión del uno con el otro.

En Colombia se conoce como El Día del Amor y la Amistad y no se celebra el 14 de febrero sino en septiembre, pues en la mayor parte del país septiembre es el mes de la temporada escolar. Es común la tradición del «amigo secreto», que consiste en sortearse el recipiente de un regalo —hombre o mujer— sin que éste sepa quién se lo obsequió.

En Ecuador se suele celebrar el 14 de Febrero con rosas, tarjetas, serenatas, cenas nocturnas entre parejas casadas, de novios y amigos

En España esta fiesta se empezó a celebrar a mediados del siglo XX, con el motivo de incentivar la compra de regalos. Se dice que la introdujo la tienda El Corte Inglés.[cita requerida]

En Guatemala también se conoce como Día del Amor y la Amistad o Día del Cariño. Las personas lo demuestran haciendo de intercambio por ejemplo amigos secretos, regalando rosas los hombres a las mujeres, chocolates y pequeños detalles que demuestren amor y amistad.

En Japón, además del festival de Tanabata —versión local del Qi Qiao Jie chino—, el Día de San Valentín se celebra desde 1936, impulsado inicialmente por la compañía de chocolates Morozoff. Como particularidad, se destaca el hecho de que son las mujeres quienes regalan chocolates a los hombres, ya sean sus familiares, amigos o compañeros de trabajo. En este último caso, el obsequio se vuelve casi una obligación, pues deben regalarles chocolates a todos sus colegas giri-choco, de giri: ‘deber’, y choco: apócope de chokorito: ‘chocolate’). Como una especie de compensación, también producto del mercadeo, los hombres devuelven el favor un mes después, el 14 de marzo, celebración conocida como White Day (‘día blanco’), en el que se suelen regalar obsequios de color blanco, como chocolate blanco, malvaviscos o incluso ropa interior.

En México se demuestra el amor entre novios o esposos con rosas.

En Perú esta fiesta se conoce como Día del Amor y la Amistad.

Earth Hour is an annual international event created by WWF (The World Wide Fund for Nature/World Wildlife Fund), held on the last Saturday of March, that asks households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change. MEDIA RELEASE - EARTH HOUR 2009 SET TO SWITCH OFF THE GLOBE

February 5, 2009: With eight weeks still to go before people around the world switch off their lights for Earth Hour, the public awareness raising campaign on climate change is showing signs of being the greatest voluntary action the world has ever witnessed.
The lights out initiative, which began in Sydney in 2007 as a one-city environmental campaign, has evolved into a grassroots action that has captured the attention of the citizens of the world. In 2008, 371 cities across 35 countries turned their lights out in a united call for action on climate change.
Now, with almost two months still remaining before Earth Hour 2009, that number has already been eclipsed, with 377 cities across 74 countries now committed to turning off their lights for one hour at 8.30pm on 28 March.
WWF Director General, Mr James Leape, said he is optimistic about the campaign’s potential to drive key decision making on the issue of climate change.
“With hundreds more cities expected to sign up to switch off in the coming months, Earth Hour 2009 is setting the platform for an unprecedented global mandate for action on climate change,” he said. The list of cities confirming their participation in Earth Hour 2009 includes 37 national capitals and some of the great cities of the world, including London, Beijing, Rome, Moscow, Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro, Hong Kong, Dubai, Singapore, Athens, Buenos Aires, Toronto, Sydney, Mexico City, Istanbul, Copenhagen, Manila, Las Vegas, Brussels, Cape Town and Helsinki.

Barack H. Obama is the 44th President of the United States.

His story is the American story — values from the heartland, a middle-class upbringing in a strong family, hard work and education as the means of getting ahead, and the conviction that a life so blessed should be lived in service to others.

With a father from Kenya and a mother from Kansas, President Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961. He was raised with help from his grandfather, who served in Patton's army, and his grandmother, who worked her way up from the secretarial pool to middle management at a bank.

After working his way through college with the help of scholarships and student loans, President Obama moved to Chicago, where he worked with a group of churches to help rebuild communities devastated by the closure of local steel plants.

He went on to attend law school, where he became the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review. Upon graduation, he returned to Chicago to help lead a voter registration drive, teach constitutional law at the University of Chicago, and remain active in his community.

President Obama's years of public service are based around his unwavering belief in the ability to unite people around a politics of purpose. In the Illinois State Senate, he passed the first major ethics reform in 25 years, cut taxes for working families, and expanded health care for children and their parents. As a United States Senator, he reached across the aisle to pass groundbreaking lobbying reform, lock up the world's most dangerous weapons, and bring transparency to government by putting federal spending online.

Lincoln stopped in 70 places along the way to his inauguration, but his tour began in Springfield, Illinois, on February 11, 1861, before arriving in Philadelphia on February 21.

Parade

The inaugural parade will travel down Pennsylvania Avenue, in front of the White House. Because of the threat that the President-elect may face on January 20, it is more than likely that Obama will be traveling down Pennsylvania Avenue by motorcade; it was tradition for the new President to walk instead of being driven. It is scheduled to extend for over two hours in the afternoon following the inauguration. It will include 15,000 people, 240 horses, dozens of marching bands, two drum and bugle corps, and one mariachi band from Espanola, New Mexico. He has invited the 9-time Drum Corps International (DCI) World Champion The Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps, the eight-time finalist Colts Drum and Bugle Corps from Dubuque, Iowa, and the VMI corps of cadets, as well as the high school marching band from Punahou School, his high school in Hawaii to perform in the inaugural parade. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a United States holiday marking the birthdate of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., observed on the third Monday of January each year, around the time of King's birthday, January 15. It is one of four United States federal holidays to commemorate an individual person.

King was the chief spokesman of the nonviolent civil rights movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. He was assassinated in 1968.

The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination. Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed in 1986. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2006.

Six million signatures were collected for a petition to Congress to pass the law, termed by a 2006 article in The Nation as "the largest petition in favor of an issue in U.S. history."
