Waiting for iPhone OS 3.0!!

Apple was 'supposed' to release the new OS for iPhone Ver. 3.0 today. I have been waiting since last night to upgrade my device since this new version is 'supposed' to give my 3G iPhone some really cool divine powers!! You know..copy/paste, landscape keyboard, push notification, turn by turn gps guidance and stuff. The stuff that geeks like me with no social life dream of!

As for the wait for 3.0..since I am in the same timezone as that of Apple HQ at (Cupertino) I expected that I will get the SW as soon as the date rolls over at midnight. But apparently that's not the case. Its 7 am in the morning and still no news of the new OS. Gotta go to the office now. Hopefully they will release the sw during the day and I will upgrade my device in the evening when I get back home.

Last weekend while returning from Target we drove past Krispy Kreme and guess what. the "HOT" sign was glowing bright. That meant that I HAD TO stop and have some of those yummy hot n fresh original glazed Donuts.

For the uninitiated - Krispy Kreme is the most famous Donut chain in US and twice a day they switch ON the 'HOT' neon sign placed outside every Krispy Kreme store. When this sign is glowing it means that they are making original glazed Donuts at right that moment. You can go in and watch how the Donuts are being made and enjoy the yummy hot donuts.

By the time we parked and got in, the line was already quite long. So while we were waiting for our turn I clicked some pics of their Donut 'assembly line'.

THE internet could soon be made obsolete. The scientists who pioneered it have now built a lightning-fast replacement capable of downloading entire feature films within seconds.

At speeds about 10,000 times faster than a typical broadband connection, “the grid” will be able to send the entire Rolling Stones back catalogue from Britain to Japan in less than two seconds.

The latest spin-off from Cern, the particle physics centre that created the web, the grid could also provide the kind of power needed to transmit holographic images; allow instant online gaming with hundreds of thousands of players; and offer high-definition video telephony for the price of a local call.

David Britton, professor of physics at Glasgow University and a leading figure in the grid project, believes grid technologies could “revolutionise” society. “With this kind of computing power, future generations will have the ability to collaborate and communicate in ways older people like me cannot even imagine,” he said.

The power of the grid will become apparent this summer after what scientists at Cern have termed their “red button” day - the switching-on of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the new particle accelerator built to probe the origin of the universe. The grid will be activated at the same time to capture the data it generates.

Cern, based near Geneva, started the grid computing project seven years ago when researchers realised the LHC would generate annual data equivalent to 56m CDs - enough to make a stack 40 miles high.

This meant that scientists at Cern - where Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the web in 1989 - would no longer be able to use his creation for fear of causing a global collapse.

This is because the internet has evolved by linking together a hotchpotch of cables and routing equipment, much of which was originally designed for telephone calls and therefore lacks the capacity for high-speed data transmission.

By contrast, the grid has been built with dedicated fibre optic cables and modern routing centres, meaning there are no outdated components to slow the deluge of data. The 55,000 servers already installed are expected to rise to 200,000 within the next two years.

Professor Tony Doyle, technical director of the grid project, said: “We need so much processing power, there would even be an issue about getting enough electricity to run the computers if they were all at Cern. The only answer was a new network powerful enough to send the data instantly to research centres in other countries.”

That network, in effect a parallel internet, is now built, using fibre optic cables that run from Cern to 11 centres in the United States, Canada, the Far East, Europe and around the world.

One terminates at the Rutherford Appleton laboratory at Harwell in Oxfordshire.

From each centre, further connections radiate out to a host of other research institutions using existing high-speed academic networks.

It means Britain alone has 8,000 servers on the grid system – so that any student or academic will theoretically be able to hook up to the grid rather than the internet from this autumn.

Rub it in.If you wanted to make a mobile-phone call in those days, you might have a radiophone in your car. You'd need to spend thousands of dollars, stash about 30 pounds of equipment in your trunk and install a special antenna.Bell Laboratories (then the research division of AT&T and now part of Alcatel-Lucent) had conceptualized cellular communications in 1947. But it was locked in a competition with Motorola in the '60s and '70s to go truly portable.At Motorola, Cooper and designer Rudy Krolopp worked on the "shoe" phone, using many of the company's existing electronics patents. They produced the Motorola DynaTAC (for DYNamic Adaptive Total Area Coverage): 9 inches tall, 2½ pounds, with 30 circuit boards. You could talk for 35 minutes, and it took 10 hours to recharge.Cooper set up a cellular base station in New York and made his first call to Joel Engel, Bell Labs' research chief. Ouch.Cooper recalls: "I made numerous calls, including one where I crossed the street while talking to a New York radio reporter -- probably one of the more dangerous things I have ever done in my life."Motorola spent another 10 years to get the cellphone over technological and regulatory hurdles. Commercial service started in 1983, with a slimmed-down, 16-ounce DynaTAC. First adopters paid $3,500 for the phone ($7,400 in today's money). It was 1990 before cellphone service reached a million U.S. subscribers.The world's lightest cellphone is now the Modu at just 1.41 ounces. The world's cheapest are free, if you sign a two-year service plan.

While the U.S. has the largest online population of 153.4 million, India is the fastest growing country of Internet users, beating growth rates of the US, China, and Japan. The study by comScore also shows the number of people using the Internet worldwide grew 10 percent, and reached 747 million people in January 2007.

Also, China comes at second place regarding Internet population with 86.8 million users, then Japan with 53.6 million, Germany (32 million), and the UK (30 million).

New WiFi Record: 237 Miles

A Venezuelan techie apparently has set a new record for longest WiFi link. Networking guru Ermanno Pietrosemoli established a wireless connection between a PC in El Aguila, Venezuela, and one in Platillon Mountain, a distance of about 237 miles, mostly using off-the-shelf equipment and a few hacked parts.

India to host F1 Grand Prix in 2009!

Finally Indian racing is coming of age. President of IOA today announced that in 2009 India is going to host a Formula 1 race for the first time.

If he's to be believed a letter of interest has been received from Bernie Ecclestone, CEO of Formula One. He also added that its being planned to build the race track near Delhi and are currently looking to identify suitable land for the purpose.

Ecclestone has identified the sub-continent as one of the growth areas for motorsport's premier class, with interest in India gathering pace after local driver Narain Karthikeyan drove for Jordan in the 2005 season.He is currently a test driver for Williams and has attracted huge sponsorship in India.

Viewing figures for Formula One on Indian television are also strong, with fans displaying the same passion they reserve for the country's most popular sport -- cricket.

Printing of Harry Potter 7 begins!

There are reports today that copies of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" are now being printed, the first batch for UK publisher Bloomsbury taking place at the GGP printers in Poessneck, Germany. This is the same plant that did print some copies of Half-Blood Prince in 2005.

However, in true tabloid fashion, the Mirror reports that the "new Harry Potter book is being printed in eastern Germany amid Cold War-style secrecy," and more dramatically, that workers "are forced to work in total DARKNESS to stop them reading the book, out July 21." While we believe the time frame is right for the novel to be printed and we have reported previously on the strict security measures being used to help prevent spoilers (which Filch no doubt would heartily approve), please take this with a grain of salt for the time being.

Motorola in World�s Highest Mobile Phone Call

Motorola, today announced that British climber Rod Baber has set world records for the highest-ever land-based mobile phone call and text message using the MOTO Z8 mobile handset.

Mr Baber called from 29,035 feet / 8848 meters on the highest peak of Mount Everest at 5.37am local time on Monday 21st May. The first phone call was made to a special voicemail account and his text was sent to John Barlow of Motorola Inc.

�Everest symbolises the greatest challenge to any climber. To reach the summit and achieve world records with Motorola is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity�, said Mr Baber from Everest Base Camp. �My MOTO Z8 has totally enhanced the experience up here, giving me the added confidence and peace of mind to know that friends, family and even help were just a phone call away.�

A number of reader reports and Google Groups message board posting indicates that CNBC's is reporting that the iPhone will be released on the 20th of June. On the Money last night on CNBC, the telco Analyst said they had been given the confirmed date of the 20th.
