6 Little Known Places to Visit In Maryland this Weekend

Summer is just getting started - have you planned out your adventures yet? If you are short on annual leave, or even short on funds, this list will help you channel your explorer mojo into planning an exciting series of day trips in Maryland. Have a solo experience, or even bring friends and family along for the ride!

Walk in Her Shoes - Harriet Tubman Byway

Not only was Harriet Tubman the frontwoman of the Underground Railroad (a network of safe houses and individuals dedicated to helping enslaved black men and women escape and gain their freedom) but she was also a nurse employed by the Union Army during the American Civil War and later -- a spy, scout, and militia commander.

Believe it or not, much of Tubman's "railroad conductor" work happened right in Maryland. While leading others to freedom, she traveled through Dorchester and Caroline counties in Maryland before heading into Deleware, and then into Pennsylvania.

This summer, walk a mile or two along the same route Harriet Tubman used while exploring The Tubman Byway. According to their website, the byway is the only self-guided tour that "preserves and interprets the places where Harriet Tubman was born, lived, labored, and where she fled from." The trip is 125 miles and can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days to complete. Your time would be best spent driving through Maryland's scenic eastern shore and stopping to visit the 36 sites associated with the Underground Railroad including the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center. Explore Maryland's Eastern Shore

Take in all the Chesapeake Bay has to offer by visiting Maryland's eastern shore. If you don't consider yourself a beach person, but still enjoy a lovely waterfront stroll I would encourage you to spend the day exploring St. Michael's Island. The towns are beautiful and quaint, perfect for a scenic drive or bike ride. There is a variety of top-tier eateries and wineries for every foodie and wine connoisseur, too. Personally, my favorite winery (for sweet wines especially) is St. Michael's Winery located on South Talbot Street.

The area also has a number of museums and historical sites to explore. If you are a fan of lighthouses (like I am!) I would recommend a trip to Hooper Straight Light at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. Consider joining a walking tour or boat tour to get the full eastern shore experience!

Would you prefer a nice quiet moment to be with nature? Walk, run, or bike St. Michael's nature trail, which extends 2.5 miles across the western edge of the town. According to traillink.com, the path starts on South Talbot Street just north of Heathington Farm Road. From there, the trail runs northwest through a dedicated parking lot (located across from the Bay Hundred community swimming pool) before coursing through the woods past some of the town's residences. A short covered wooden bridge takes trail users across San Domingo Creek, which is a popular spot for fishing. The nature trail then travels past a horse farm and cemetery before reaching its end at Bradley Park on Railroad Avenue.

However you decide to begin your eastern shore journey, I see a relaxing day trip in your future!

Meditate & Reflect at Secluded Shrine - Shrine of St. Anthony

Located in Ellicott City, Maryland, the Shrine of St. Anthony offers a peaceful place for visitors to pray, meditate, or simply enjoy a bit quiet time. The structure was built in 1930 and has been kept in pristine condition ever since. The grounds of the shrine expand 310 acres and include woodland trails, a stunning stone courtyard, and manicured gardens. The shrine is open to the public daily from 9AM-5PM. The Secret Garden was my favorite movie as a child and St. Anthony's looks like it could have been a part of the film's set.

Have a Birding Adventure - Patuxent Wildlife Refuge

Scarlet Tanager

During your travels in nature, how often do you pay attention to the wildlife? I love to see animals while visiting parks. Birding is a great hobby to incorporate your love of animals into your next day trip, and the Patuxent Wildlife Refuge is a great place to try it out! Birding only requires a few items to get started including a field guide, weather-proof journal, and binoculars. The Scarlet Tanager is a species known to thrive at the refuge. Do a little research on native birds (including listening to their songs) and lead your own bird quest right in Laurel, Maryland.

History Hopping Around Town - Annapolis, MD

Whether you are a hardcore history buff, or in search of educational opportunities for your little ones, Annapolis is a great place to spend the day exploring. Start your day at the Visitor's Center in Downtown Annapolis to get an overall look at the history of the city.

Next, take a short walk to the Banneker-Douglass Museum located on Franklin Street. It is housed in the former building of Mount Moriah African Methodist Episcopal Church, which is now a historic landmark. Take the opportunity to learn about black scientist Benjamin Banneker, as well as black activist and abolitionist Frederick Douglass.

From there, take your pick of visiting little-known area landmarks such as the Alex Haley sculpture (all the way down Main Street, right in front of City Dock) or Middleton Tavern - a bar which still stands today and known as a common slave auction site during the 1750's. Research your own historical sites within walking distance to Main Street and create your own itinerary!

Go Chasin' Waterfalls - Swallow Falls State Park

Muddy Creek Falls at Swallow Falls State Park

Located in Garret County, Maryland, Muddy Creek Falls is notably the tallest waterfall in Maryland at a whopping 53 feet! Enjoy a reasonable walk of a little over a mile up a conveniently placed staircase. As with any whitewater rapids, or waterways in general, exercise caution when navigating possible deep pools, slippery rocks, and swift currents. This park is a great place for a picnic or even outdoor camping for the expert adventurer. Admission is $3 per in-state car and $5 for out-of-state vehicles. Take your book, bike, or both - and have a fun day being at one with nature.

UNpacked: Sally Hemings and Slavery Romanticism

I'm proud to introduce my UNpacked series! In UNpacked, I will tackle issues concerning race, gender, socio-economic status, etc that I uncover or grapple with during my travels. I hope it sparks a dialogue for you to have with your loved ones, or even encourages you to do research and further educate yourself about the topic.

While doing research for future road trips, I found myself visiting Virginia's official tourism website for ideas. After clicking through a few pages I came across a listing of African American historic sites that I was initially very excited to explore. No matter where I vacation I ALWAYS visit black historic sites. It is my way of feeling in touch with my heritage, as well as learning more about the history of the travel destination.

However, what I found on the Virginia webpage gave me pause. In an overview of Monticello, located in Charlottesville, VA, I read the following:

See Monticello through the lens of the Hemings Family, the best documented enslaved family in the United States, through special guided tours and the new exhibit, The Life of Sally Hemings, Jefferson’s concubine who not only bore several of his children but successfully negotiated their freedom as well.

Best documented enslaved family? Jefferson's CONCUBINE? I still can't deny how off-putting the passage sounds...like these are points of pride in US history *side eye*. However, this minimalization of slavery is not unusual throughout history. Although a touchy and controversial subject to some, slavery is also quite frequently romanticized in American culture. I won't delve into all the ways this happens, but a popular example is the rebranding of plantations in the American south as vacation destinations and event venues - for weddings in particular.

In this same vein, slave and slave owner relationships are often romanticized, as I feel is the case with Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings. According to the Oxford Dictionary, a concubine is a woman who lives with a man but has lower status than his wife. However, as a slave woman with no agency...can we truly call Hemmings a "concubine" or "mistress"? There were no rights protecting slave women from the sexual advances of slave owners.

I pondered this question while visiting the Black History Museum and Cultural Center in Richmond, VA earlier this year (pre-COVID quarantine).

In an exhibit entitled The Paradox of Liberty I learned some interesting facts about Sally Hemmings and Thomas Jefferson's "relationship" that truly made me question how this story of "forbidden love" is typically presented.

THE FACTS:

Sally Hemmings was born into slavery to her mother, Elizabeth Hemings. Her father was the owner of the plantation, John Wayles.
Thomas Jefferson's wife, Martha Wayles Skelton Jefferson, was Sally Hemings' half-sister. Martha "inherited" the Hemings' family following the death of John Wayles and brought them to Monticello in 1774. Hemings was likely only a year old.
Martha died in 1782, four months after the birth of her last child.
At the age of 14, Hemings went to France to serve as a handmaid to Jefferson's daughter Maria. She lived her life "freely" while overseas, learning French and attending parties with Jefferson's daughters. It was at this time that Hemings and Jefferson were "sexually involved".
After negotiating privileges for herself and freedom for her future children, she agreed to revisit her life as a slave in America. By 1789, Hemings returned to Virginia - pregnant with Jefferson's child. She would go on to bear 6 children by Jefferson. 4 lived into adulthood. Some of her children chose to "pass" as white and blend into the white community.

After my visit to the BHMVA, I struggled with these truths. The thought of a 14-year-old slave girl propositioned by a slave master. Sally Hemings living as his "mistress" in France and his sex slave in the U.S. I use the term "sex slave" because Hemings was never formally liberated by Jefferson. So while likely receiving privileges many slaves did not, she was still enslaved up until Jefferson's death. It's hard for me to accept the often "romantic" presentation of this narrative. However, I have nothing but respect and admiration for Hemings because she did what was necessary to survive slavery and help her children gain freedom.

10 Tips to Keep Your Road Trips Safe During COVID

Can you believe it's actually August? It seems it was not that long ago that I was making plans to work from home for what appeared to be a couple of weeks or so. I remember putting on my jacket, grabbing a few things from my cubicle at the office -- only to never return again. In the time since March, the days have zoomed past at break-neck speed. My husband and I had to cancel our anniversary celebration and to add insult to injury I barely remember holidays like Easter or Memorial Day weekend.

I think the pandemic quarantine or "Coronatine" (as I like to call it) has caused this phenomenon where we lose a sense of time due to the monotony of our schedules and increased time indoors. According to health professionals, this is the safest method for curbing the spread of the virus.

This fact brings us to our topic at hand. Even though most states are at level 3+ of re-opening, does that mean we can go back pre-pandemic life? Definitely not. Proper hygiene, social distancing, and mask-wearing should still be our top priority. That means if you still want to explore, you have to incorporate these practices into your road trips and put a little extra thought into your planning. Here are some of my personal tips for keeping yourself and others safe while road tripping:

Do not travel if you do not feel well or if you were exposed to someone who is ill/had a fever. This might sound like a given, but I think it's worth reiterating.
Only travel with family or friends you live with or are in your "bubble". It might be tempting to plan a weekend getaway with your friend you haven't seen in a very long time, but hanging with your usual suspects can help to keep you and your loved ones safe and healthy.
Find a destination that isn't crowded and research the number of infections in that area. Knowledge is power...and understanding how the virus is moving in the community you plan to visit will help you make better choices about your trip. You may see the numbers and opt to change plans - and that's okay!
Know your home state's rules for quarantine as well as the rules for the state you plan to visit. Some states require you quarantine at home upon your return if you vacation in specific areas. Some vacation destinations require you to quarantine in your room upon your arrival.
If you plan to stay overnight (or for a few days), opt for lodging with private entry. The fewer people you have to interact with, the better. This includes shared spaces such as lobbies, elevators, and hallways. A timeshare condo or rental home could be viable options. Some folks are even opting for RVs and campers for their road trip fun this year. Always wear your mask properly while in public spaces.
If you are planning to lodge somewhere, find out what the company is doing to keep you safe! Visit the company website, call/message the owners (if it's a rental), do your research! Prioritize proper sanitation, the presence of sanitation stations, and the enforcement of social distancing and mask-wearing.
Plan to do some disinfecting. Bring your cleansing/disinfecting items from home to sanitize your vacation space after upon arrival. If you are staying in a rental, ask if the air filters are changed between guests. I don my rubber gloves and clean all doorknobs, light switches, restrooms, counter/table surfaces, kitchen/kitchenette, and just spray Lysol to my heart's delight!
Focus on points of interest that have minimal crowds and enforce social distancing and mask-wearing. Popular places may have a lot of visitors, so explore your options! I use Facebook, Instagram, and BringFido.com to pick places that seem fun, safe, and pet-friendly. Also - I'm partial to outdoor adventures because I love all the fresh air and open spaces!
If you are planning a day trip, pack your lunch and treats ahead of time for easy snacking. A cooler is a great option to keep your food and drinks cool when you are ready to eat.
Research where you can visit the restroom safely before you get on the road. Schedule bathroom breaks if necessary and make sure you keep your hand sanitizer handy! Don't forget to wash your hands!

If You Need to Get Away: Lewes, Dewey, & Rehoboth Beach

While I love the joy and fulfillment that comes with working for non-profit organizations, I understand how difficult it can be to make the time (and save the money) necessary to travel frequently. That being said, when my fiance and I wanted to have a quick beach vacation and save a bit of loot in the process - I took it as a challenge! In 2017, we visited the Rehoboth Beach area for the first time and have been itching to get back ever since!

The boo and I packed up the car on a Thursday afternoon in late April and started our pilgrimage to Deleware. The traffic was a mess all the way there but with great tunes and even better company, we arrived just in time for check-in. I'd heard many positive things about Dewey Beach, and decided to book at Beach House Dewey using Groupon.

This is a motel with an updated, boutique-light look. The rooms are fairly spacious with modern furnishings, but none of the rooms have a beach or ocean view. Unfortunately, we had issues with the cleanliness of the room and found ants/sticky surfaces throughout our trip. For a King room, we paid $275 for Thursday-Sunday with our Groupon deal. Considering, I felt this was reasonable, but only because it was the off-season. The rates nearly triple moving into the summer, and I definitely feel it isn't worth it. Despite this disappointment, we lucked out on being right in the heart of Dewey. The hotel was a minute walk to the beach, 5-minute walk to the bay, and also convenient to restaurants, shops, and a trolly stop.

The locals in Dewey are wonderful. We got a taste of the community when visiting the Dewey Beach Community Yard Sale. It was a great time, and we bought some fun items!

We thoroughly enjoyed our lazy time during the trip. The beach behind our hotel in Dewey was pretty nice! We napped under our umbrella and listened to music for hours. However, the ocean is still pretty cold in the spring! You've been warned!

Further research on the best beaches in the area took us to Cape Henlopen in Lewes the following day. Because the beach is federal parkland, it is clean and well-maintained. There is a very clean bathroom/changing area and ample parking. My fiance is in the military so entry was free for us! General admission is $10 a day per out of state car. Go early to snag a good spot!

Cape Henlopen also offers a picnic pavilion, golf course, basketball courts, and hiking trails. If you do go, consider making a day of it!

We saved a great deal of money on food and drinks by packing our daily breakfast and lunch, juice, bottled water, and even a MINI BAR (courtesy of my fiance). We only ate out twice. One of the restaurants we did have the pleasure of trying was Woody's East Coast Bar & Grill. It is about a 5-minute walk from Dewey Beach House.

Woody's easily offers the best crab cakes in Dewey (and the top 5 crab cakes I've ever had!). They also offer fast service, great bartenders, and a wheel of shots! You can read my review of the experience here on Yelp.

We ended our weekend getaway slinking down the Rehoboth Beach boardwalk. Though beautiful and peaceful, it was very cold and windy our last day. Bae wasn't feeling it (lol). Still - I had a great time and I look forward to going back! We stopped by Fisher's Popcorn to snag some caramel corn for the ride home.

If you need to get away - and hope to feel a bit of sand between your toes - the Lewes, Dewey, and Rehoboth Beach areas just might be worth your time and hard earned bucks. I've been to Ocean City a few times, and I feel that in comparison - there is more for adults/couples to enjoy. My fiance and I actually have our next trip there planned for July! Look out for an update post!

Maryland Whiskey Distillery Now Selling Hand Sanitizer

Twin Valley Distillers, a whiskey distillery located in Rockville, is now making hand sanitizer on-site instead of its usual spirits. According to WJLA's live broadcast on March 23rd, the company is selling 4 oz bottles of hand sanitizer today at 8AM. This will be the third batch of hand sanitizer sold by Twin Valley. Bottles are $4 each and limited to 2 per customer.

ROCKVILLE, Md. (ABC7) — It started as a joke, but Twin Valley Distillers has turned its production line of whiskeys, bourbons, and rums into a hand sanitizer factory, helping alleviate strained supply chains across Maryland.

The locally-owned business — and Montgomery County's only distillery — began tinkering with ingredients in recent days. It simultaneously applied for, and quickly received, federal approval to make the sanitizing product. it is using a recipe of ethanol, glycerol, aloe vera gel, lemongrass oil, and Vitamin E oil.

"The federal government said the application typically takes three weeks for approval. We got approval in two days," noted Jonathan Shair, General Manager and Head of Production for Twin Valley Distillers.

Shair explained he was recently out to dinner with a friend at a bar in Bethesda when the topic of Coronavirus, hand sanitizer, and distilleries came up in conversation. The idea was born...

“We started talking about hand sanitizer — and out of the seven or eight people, and the bartender that was there — every single one of them took my [business] card and said, ‘Hey when you’re ready, I’ll buy it from you,'" Shair added.

My Personal Toilet Paper Crisis

This whole grocery store situation has been super apocalyptic, and because of it, this morning I caught the holy spirit (for the first time in my life) over some toilet paper.

Two weeks ago, Chris tried to get a leg up on the then possible threat of a TP shortage. He went to the commissary and accidentally bought two packs of paper towels. To his credit, Scott paper towels look exactly like Scott toilet paper at first glance. I wasn't tripping at first because we had about 8 rolls of TP left in the house.

Again, this was close to 2 weeks ago...and things dwindle. I tried to do my best to conserve but I'm a BBW and use more than the average person. This week we were down to 4 rolls. We have 3 bathrooms in the house...so I was starting to feel anxious. Amazon didn't have any TP. We tried ordering them from Instacart and that didn't work either. I really didn't want to wait until Amazon emailed me to say they had toilet paper in stock. I needed some right now. Let's just say I didn't want Aunt Flo to show up and I was unprepared for her visit.

I woke up this morning at 5:30 sweating bullets. At 6AM on the dot, I called the Giant down the street from me and a man named Sean answered the phone. I asked if they had any TP in stock. He said they did, but it wasn't much. If I needed some I would have to come RIGHT NOW. If "say no more, fam" was a person it would have been me at that moment. I practically backflipped out the bed and threw on my best yoga pants and matching running jacket. I knew this was going to be the most exercise I got this week so I had to make it count. I did some stretches and yoga poses to make sure I was limber enough to knock someone over the head for a pack of Charmin (best case scenario) or at worst Scott. Your girl has sciatic nerve issues...I got to stretch before any physical activity, head bussin' included. 👊🏿👊🏿👊🏿😵

I hop in the whip and floor it all the way to Giant and pull up outside that piece with a SKRRRRRRRT. I didn't even park it. Just left the hazards on and ran inside the store, dressed in all black like an omen. I'm sure people were staring like "who is this fitting to start some mess at 6 in the morning???" 🤔

And I was seriously running ya'll...like Usain Bolt...like that man ran towards Daniel Kaluuya in 'Get Out'...like I saw a group of black people start running so my feet decided to join in. I was wheezing and breathing heavy but I was MOVING. Folks were getting out of my way left and right. Had I ran into someone it would have been a legal tackle.

I made it to the toilet paper aisle and there was one lonely pack of Charmin on the shelf. I almost couldn't believe it. There was nobody else there but me. It was glowing like God had left the night light on for me so I could see it. I ran for it, grabbed it and squeezed it as tight as I squeezed my husband on our wedding day. Then something hit me. It was like a brick...but if Jesus were the brick. Ya'll might call it the holy ghost. My knees buckled. All of a sudden I was screaming and crying and jumping up and down shouting Jesus and thank you and I couldn't control myself. My wig started sliding and everything! Lace front sitting sideways while I'm shouting and crying in the TP aisle at Giant Foods. People started to stare. I wasn't embarrassed. I was GRATEFUL!!! 🥴

Eventually, I got it together a bit and quick-stepped it over to the meats aisle to find some ground turkey...which they didn't have. The meat aisle is empty. The only items left are literally 4 packs of spicy sausage didn't nobody wanted. On the way to the cash register, I spotted another pack of Charmin at the other end of the toilet paper aisle and I was so grateful because now I had 25 rolls to share between my house and my parents' house.

You've got to be faithful over a few things, everyone! I hope you all are holding up well day 2 into social distancing! Hopefully, you are in the house with everything you need!

Price gouging occurs when sellers (individuals) increase the cost of goods, services or commodities to a level much higher than is considered reasonable or fair. It typically occurs after a demand or supply shock and is considered exploitative and unethical.

Businesses are not allowed to take advantage of the public during a national crisis or natural disaster by increasing the cost of essential items to turn a profit. This could include (but is not limited to) gas, toilet paper, surgical masks, hand sanitizer, or non-perishables.

Top 5 Best Crab Cakes within 150 miles of DC

Not a Maryland crab cake

I always get highly upset when I go to a restaurant and they say they have Maryland crab cakes...when they actually just have crab patties made with Maryland blue crab loaded down with tons of filler.

It is an OUTRAGE and the next time it happens, I am calling the POLICE!

For those who aren't aware, a real Maryland crab cake has the following qualities:

Is made with LUMP Maryland blue crab meat (not backfin).
Has little to no filler and usually has mostly egg binding instead of breadcrumb (or in some cases a little of both).
Is served broiled, not fried.
It is served browned. It isn't white, or light tan, it is GOLDEN BROWN cot dangit. (If someone brings me a white crab cake, I'm flipping over the table and knocking over every water pitcher in sight!)
You don't get any bites of crab shell. Only delicious, sweet crab.

That being said, here is a list of restaurants where you can go and expect to have an authentic Maryland crab cake eating experience within 150 miles of Washington, D.C.

Woody's East Coast Bar & Grill - 121 miles from DC
You may not think driving nearly three hours for delicious crab cakes is the best idea, but if you plan on visiting Dewey, Bethany Beach, Lewes, or the Rehoboth Beach area, this place is a MUST. Honestly, some of the best crab cake eating I've ever had and 100% the best in the area.

The Wellwood Club - 84 miles from DC
My fiance's family LOVES Wellwood, and for good reason! They're nestled in the quaint area of Charleston, Maryland on a lovely waterfront. Their mouth-watering crab cakes made to order, and they offer an extensive seafood selection and diverse menu.

Timbuktu - 30 miles from DC
I have fond memories of taking the women in my family to Timbuktu for Mother's Day and waiting in the long line to be seated for dinner service. However, hanging in the chow line is well worth it! This is an older restaurant and the decor is a bit outdated, but I appreciate the wonderful service and great food!

Assateague Island, MD

Assateague is a natural barrier island a few miles south of Ocean City, MD. Tourists often gather on its famous beaches for the chance to catch a glimpse of wild ponies. On your next trip, consider visiting the Assateague Lighthouse or renting a bike and pedaling around Assateague Park! Admission is $20 per vehicle.

Calvert Cliffs State Park, MD

Located in Lusby, Maryland, the Calvert Cliffs State Park is well known for its diverse ecosystem (including beaches, marshes, and woodlands), beautiful sandstone cliffs, and commonly recovered fossils along the surf. This is a great location for more advanced hikers (as the paths are not paved). The park welcomes hunters and fishers and even offers a picnic area. Hours of operation are sunrise to sunset daily, year round. The cost of admission is $5/vehicle, and there is a $2 additional for out-of-state residents.

Harpers Ferry, WV

Harpers Ferry is one of my favorite day trip locations. Not only does the town have a fantastic history (look up John Brown's raid and Storer College) it is an adventure seeker's dream! The Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers meet at "The Point" at Harpers Ferry in West Virginia (pictured above) where you can actually enjoy the gorgeous Maryland and Virginia skyline. Travelers flock to the area throughout the year for rafting, tubing, hiking, and camping. The historic old town area is also filled with shops and museums. Admission is $10 per vehicle. I try to go at least once a year for a peaceful walk and picnic.

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens (District of Columbia)

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens is a lush paradise situated in the northeast corner of Washington, DC in Anacostia Park. In all my years of living in this area, I had no idea such a lovely natural display occurs here annually. Mid to late July each year, the lotus and water lilies are in full-bloom and area residents visit the park to mill about the beautiful flowers. There are literally thousands of lotus blossoms as far as the eye can see. It is an experience everyone should have at least once! Visit this week while the flora is in peak bloom! There are no admission or parking fees.

Kilgore Falls, MD

Waterfalls in Maryland? Yes, there are absolutely waterfalls in the state of Maryland (and even DC)! One of the most easily hiked is Kilgore Falls located in Rocks State Park in Pylesville. While it is not the largest waterfall in Maryland, it is a very popular place to take a cool dip during the summer. Try to beat the crowds and visit during the week if possible. Shenandoah Caverns, VA

While there are several caverns located throughout Maryland and Virginia, Shenandoah Caverns is probably my favorite to explore. It is considerably smaller than other caverns (shorter walk), but the charming surrounding attractions in Quicksburg are fun and add to the experience. I also appreciate the cool, fresh cavern air! There is also an elevator, which makes the cavern more accessible to those with mobility concerns. Check out Groupon for discounts or visit the Shenandoah Caverns website for ticket information.

Natural Bridge, VA

This 215-foot tall natural arch is located in the Virginia town which shares its namesake - Natural Bridge. Admission is $6 per person and includes living history exhibits, 6 miles of hiking trails, a 30 ft cascading waterfall, and the Monocan American Indian Village. You're sure to love the scenic drive down to Natural Bridge, as well as the rich forests and valleys of the park.

In September of 2017, my best friend and I visited New Orleans. I've never felt more at home while vacationing than I did while in NOLA. It is almost like my soul exclaimed: "We have finally returned!"

The food & drinks were awesome, the history was titillating, and the adventures were unmatched.

We spent most of our time exploring the French Quarter and trying lots of food (none of which is pictured). If you love history, awesome storytelling, and live for a good bowl steamy goodness -- then New Orleans would be right up your alley.

If You Need to Get Away: Shenandoah Crossing

Shenandoah Crossing is a hidden jewel. This beautiful property is situated along the picturesque backdrop of the rolling Blue Ridge Mountains and the Shenandoah River. The campus is located in Gordonsville VA, and it is well off of the beaten path. The nearest stores are about 15-20 minutes away, so you have to be happy with the onsite offerings if you do not want to have to drive very far for entertainment/shopping. The property offers a number of well-done amenities including a gym, horse stables, putt-putt golf, pools and hot tubs, an arcade, a general store and a bar/restaurant.

At check-in you receive a schedule of events for the week that range anywhere from free-$20 per person. My fiance and I noticed there were cool things going on during the weekdays before our check-in, but not much else during the weekend. Monday-Thursday they offered craft-making, tours, and various other activities for guest to enjoy. It would have been nice to have the option to participate in more activities led by the property. We were disappointed there was no opportunity to make smores onsite.

Gordonsville is not a "destination" so there isn't much to do in the surrounding area. There is, however, an "old town" area about 10 minutes away from Shenandoah Crossing. It is cute, but fairly tiny...only about two blocks long. There's more to do in Orange, VA. Charlottesville is about 45 minutes away.

On Saturday morning, we visited the stables and watched the ducks, peacocks, and horses stretch their legs and enjoy their first meal of the day. We noticed how clear the paths were and wished it were a bit warmer for a nice walk. It was quite chilly out, so we did not take the wagon ride like we had planned. It was reasonably priced at $10 per person. For Veterans Day they offered pre-packaged mini muffins and juice to guests, but because breakfast isn't usually offered for free it caused a bit of a feeding frenzy.

The rooms in the lodge were small but cozy, and we loved the nice firm beds. There isn't much counter space between the bathroom and the sleeping area. The "closet" is an old-school, standalone chiffarobe. It can't hold much. We didn't make use of the drawers. The TV was nice, but the channel selection left a lot to be desired. It was nice having a mini fridge and coffee maker in the room. Kind of wish we had a microwave as well.

The lobby of the lodge is quite inviting. We spent a bit of time lounging by the fireplace in rustic rocking chairs while sipping wine. Unfortunately, we didn't hang by the bar during our stay or eat at the on-site restaurant.

I imagine this would be a great place for a family vacation during the spring, summer, or very early fall. You have your pick of a spiffy cabin, luxury yurt, or room in the lodge - all in one property. Bluegreen is a known resort for those who own RVs. You can pull up, park, and utilize the campus.

This place also tries to convince you to participate in the timeshare presentation. I think we might sit-in on it to get an idea of the amenities offered to those who buy in. I have never ever participated in a timeshare presentation, and as someone who loves travel - I want to see what all the fuss (and complaints) are about.

In my opinion, if you need to get away, Shenandoah Crossing is reasonably priced, offers decent amenities, and isn't too far from MD or DC. We booked for $50 (a special found on Booking.com) a night and wanted to celebrate our anniversary last November, so we felt it was worth the value we paid. Though we probably received a great deal due to the off-season pricing, we would probably only go back during the warmer spring or summer months.

During our Shenandoah Crossing baecation, my fiance and I decided to venture into the woodlands of Virginia and seek out the majestic Stone Mountain Vineyards. I'd purchased a Groupon for a wine tasting for two which included a cheese plate.

The drive from Quicksburg, VA to Dyke, Virginia takes about an hour. It is a beautiful, peaceful ride. We passed farms, adorable country cottages, and miles and miles of sprawling, green fields.

That being said, the drive up the mountain is TERRIFYING! It is not at all for the faint of heart. The road is very narrow and literally windes around the edge of a steep mountain. We were scared that a passing vehicle would push us off the roadway, or that a bear would fall out of a tree and onto the hood of our car. On a more serious note, it is very difficult to navigate the roadway if a vehicle is approaching you in the opposite direction. There aren't any sort of guardrails, so the only thing between you and an untimely tumble is trees and more trees.

Relief and Exhaustion

Once we finally got to the top of the mountain we planned to be there for a while. We thanked God for safe passage up the mountain, headed inside, and immediately redeemed our vouchers to start our wine tasting. Lord knows we needed a drink to calm our nerves!

Bae, cheese, & meats (omg he's so handsome!!!)

We enjoyed the wines we tried as well as the cheese plate with baguette and crackers, but after such a long and arduous drive, we really needed more sustenance. Their only hot food offering is pizza - which was just okay. We honestly didn't love it.

Also, the experience at the winery left a lot to be desired. We wished they had board games or playing cards available for patrons. There was live music - but it wasn't exactly our cup of tea.

The view from the balcony is UNREAL! You really feel like you are nestled in a beautiful, luxury tree house. However, for the time of year we visited we could only stay on the balcony for a short period of time. It is very windy at that altitude.

Just so you know, the drive down the mountain is just as terrifying as the drive up! Since it was the fall (and we arrived at 5pm) we stayed long enough for the sun to begin to set. We feared that if we stayed any longer it would be too dark to drive down.

With prayers, swears, and clenched butt-checks, we descended the mountain successfully. I've never been so happy to see flat, level ground in my life.

If you need to get away, and you aren't afraid of challenging driving circumstances - perhaps you'd like the experience of driving vertically up a ragged, jagged mountain. Just so you know - despite the pleasant time I had once we actually got settled, I don't plan on going back anytime soon!

Edit: Apparently, Stone Mountain Vineyards now communicates to patrons to take a very specific route to their facility. Please keep this in mind if you decide to visit!

If You Need to Get Away: Bahamas Paradise Cruise from Groupon

Soooooo let me start this off by stating that I am a cruise fanatic. I have cruised Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Princess. This wasn't even my first trip to the Bahamas - I actually visited Paradise Island about 4 months before my January 2016 trip.

This adventure begins with me purchasing this Groupon for my mother as a part of her Christmas gift. The deal was for an Ocean View room for 2 people for $189 for a two-day cruise out of West Palm Beach. Not a bad rate at all. I figured I could find her and my Pop and cheap flight for their quick cruise. However, once other family members learned about this deal it quickly turned into a family vacation. Six of us total - myself included.

I was in charge of booking for four of us. Two people booked separately but were told they would be across the hall from us. We were fine with that. We figured we'd all be in the same vicinity. I was told while trying to book that I would have to pay the taxes upfront. Pretty sure it was a term on my Groupon voucher, so I wasn't terribly surprised. It was over $200 for 4 people. Also, I was told we would be responsible for paying $12 per person per day for gratuity - but that would be charged at the end of the cruise.

As our sail date neared I got antsy because I didn't receive a confirmation email. I called and had to request one to be sent. I also used their online check-in feature which was supposed to speed up the process of boarding.

The ship leaves out of the Port of West Palm Beach - so the six of us taxi over from the airport. Upon seeing the boat nobody was impressed lol. The Grand Celebration is an old Carnival Ship so I wasn't looking for glitz or glamour. When we arrived we walked right up to check-in. We fill out a credit card authorization form to open onboard accounts, but you also have the option to open an account with cash. We also received our dinner reservations in the Stellar Prime. This this the main dining room in which you can have dinner and breakfast at no extra charge.

The inside of the ship looked dated, but it smelled okay for the most part and looked clean. The rooms were not ready by the time we boarded so we were told to go to the Lido Deck for lunch at the buffet. It is a fairly small area, but tidy. Several salad options, hummus, fish dishes, chicken...ect. Fruit punch, lemonade, and tea are included. Sodas are extra. There are bars everywhere if you want a drink. Alcoholic beverages averaged $9.00 each but there were drink specials for $6.50.

The rooms were a decent size. The beds were pushed together but I was sharing the room with a family member so that was fine. Comfortable bed but the pillows had seen better days. We had an ocean view room, but the window was very high up so you couldn't see anything if you were laying down. A few surfaces were a tad dusty, but the room was clean for the most part. My room didn't have any washcloths so I had to call and ask for some. I saw my room steward on the last day of the trip for the first time.

I usually travel with my parents (they are seniors) and most cruises tend to pull an older crowd (I'm talking 50 and over). This was definitely the most youthful ship I've ever been on. Lots of young couples and families with children. Very diverse group of ethnicities aboard the ship too.

We enjoyed the staff for the most part. The bartenders are very good. I hung around the Encore most of my trip so I had lots of fun with bartenders Devon and Roy! I wasn't very thrilled with my server in the Stellar Prime. I also thought the food there was a hit or miss. In terms of food, we were modestly satisfied. Pizza was fine. Chicken burgers were pretty good. Offerings at the buffet were decent at best (as long as you knew the correct times to go). The grill station closes early but the buffet is open late. The bars also stay open crazy late. Their motto is "were open as long as you're drinking". I had insomnia the first night and I was super surprised to see that this boat was still going strong at 2AM! People still hanging around the blackjack tables, the club was popping and people were still drinking at the bar. Many cruises get quiet after midnight - but people came on this trip to PARTY. That being said I had a blast!

My experience at the spa was fantastic. I had a full body scrub and massage. It was an hour-long service and cost $97. Still cheaper than a full body scrub and massage at a spa at home so I considered it a deal. I had a fantastic esthetician/therapist. She was very nice and asked me specific questions about sources of tension and preferred pressure.

Overall, this was a fun trip for my entire family. Cruise entertainment was standard yet fun. Karaoke and game shows like the "Not So Newly Wed" Game and "Adult Scavenger Hunt" were a hit with the family. My parents and I went to the 50's dance party (they are dancing in the video above) and they had a great time! I also won $200 playing Jackpot Bingo.

In my opinion, if you need to get away, and aren't terribly picky you might have fun on a Bahamas Paradise Cruise. Just keep in mind the extra fees and bring your passport for an easier onboarding experience.

If You Need to Get Away: Quicksburg, VA

I really needed to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, so I searched on Groupon for a short-drive adventure for under $25.

To my surprise (and excitement!) I found a deal for Shenandoah Caverns located in Quicksburg, VA. The deal included admission for two for $27 - a great deal considering general admission is $25 per person full priced.

I called up my cousin (one of my favorite travel partners), prepared a picnic lunch, and together we hit the road!

Quicksburg is about a two-hour drive from Southern Maryland. My cousin and I ate breakfast and listened to tunes on the way down.

There isn't very much to do in the Quicksburg area. It is mostly beautiful scenery, highways, with the occasional gas station/rest stop along the way. This makes it perfect for a scenic drive when the weather is nice.

We arrived at Shenandoah Caverns around 10:00 a.m. My cousin and I took photos of the surrounding area then perused the gift shop.

While hanging around the gift shop before our tour was set to start, we received a little slip of paper of attractions to see in and around Quicksburg. Considering we didn't have much else to do that day, we agreed we would check them out.

Even though there are stairs that lead directly from the inside of the gift shop and into the cavern, there is also an elevator. Shenandoah Caverns is the only cavern in our area that has an elevator, which is great for travelers with mobility concerns.

The sights within the cavern were breath-taking. Our favorite formations were Rainbow Lake (above) and Diamond Cascade (below).

The air smelled sweet and fresh. For a cold April, the cavern was close to 60 degrees which was not as chilly as I originally anticipated. The only downside was that the tour guide turned off the lights as we progressed through the cave. It is a little scary to see just how dark the trail is behind you.

The walk was also fairly short - it takes about 30 minutes to walk from the elevator to the heart of the cavern. The return trip is the same length, but at that point, you've already seen all there is to see. I wasn't terribly disappointed, but I do wish there was more.

After the cave tour, we explored the other attractions in close proximity.

First, we hit American Celebration on Parade. The former owner of Shenandoah Caverns, Earl Hargrove Jr., also specialized in decorating parade floats for Presidental Inaugurations, sporting events, and other occasions.

The warehouse holds over twenty floats. My silly cousin was creeped out, but I had a ball! I loved seeing all of the ostentatious parade floats in one place!

Next, we visited the Yellow Barn. This building houses several carriages and a greater exhibit referred to as Main Street of Yesteryear. There was even a small set-up for a $5 wine tasting. I tried several delicious local wines and even purchased a few bottles to take home.

We traveled outside Caverns Road to see Meems Covered Bottom Bridge in Mount Jackson. This area is beautiful just for the scenery alone. Meems Bridge is also known as a recommended site on the Shenandoah County Wilderness Trail. The structure dates back to 1892 and is constructed of stone quarried from the riverbed.

After peeping out the bridge, we visited the last site on our little slip of paper - the Route 11 chip factory! I love Route 11's kettle cooked chips and had no idea they were a Virginia-based business. My cousin and I enjoyed the free chip samples, purchased a few bags of product, and ate lunch at the picnic table located outside of the building.
If you need to get away and are fine with retreating to the mountains of Quicksburg, VA - then Shenandoah Caverns might be worth the trip to you. Be sure to check deal sites for discounts.

For the Love of the Beach (Outer Banks Pt. 1)

I have such a strange history with beaches.

I think because I never had the healthiest relationship with my body, I never enjoyed wearing swimsuits. This meant I never enjoyed or looked forward to going places where it was required to wear a swimsuit…beaches, pools, ect.

It wasn’t until a trip to the Bahamas in 2017 that I realized that I had been missing out all of these years! Afterward, I longed for more beach vacays. Alas, my wallet was like “byeeeeeee!”

I figured Maryland beaches could be my substitute. Ocean City, while conveniently located, just wasn’t cutting it though. I just didn’t find the beaches that appealing. The hotels were often old, dingy, and outdated. It was clear that families with children were flocking to the area and since I was unwedded and had no children of my own, I didn't truly feel like it was "for me" outside of taking my younger family members. My niece (pictured above) had a pretty good time at the boardwalk though.

That brings me to my discovery of Dewey Beach in Delaware. I honestly don’t remember how I found out about this little gem of a town, but I am so happy that I did. My husband (then fiancé at the time) and I visited two years in a row - with our first trip being our favorite. It had everything I felt I was missing from Ocean City – beautiful beaches, modern accommodations, and activities for adults who aren’t traveling with children.

My interests turned to the Outer Banks last year after unsuccessfully trying to plan a trip to Dewey Beach in the early spring. Rates around Rehoboth Beach proper skyrocket after April, which means by the time we were ready to plan a trip we couldn’t truly afford to do so. I put my researching skills to work, Googling beaches along the east coast. I quickly learned that the OBX was chock-full of experiences and I was itching to visit!

Mother’s Day weekend of 2018, Chris and I drove down to Corolla, NC in the Outer Banks to enjoy a short getaway and join his Mom and step-dad for a bit of adventuring. For such a compact visit, we were able to squeeze in a number of fun activities! By hotel hopping were amazed to see how different each town truly is, down to flora and fauna. The vibe in Kill Devil Hills was more face paced than that of Corolla - though we loved both areas for how unique they seemed. We always had plenty of exploring to look forward to, but we enjoyed our downtime at the beach as well.

Highlights during this trip included an ATV ride through the OBX forests and dunes (and seeing wild ponies on the beach) with Corolla Jeep Adventures and visiting Bodie Island Lighthouse right before sunset.

The OBX is one of the most ecologically diverse places in the U.S. The natural beauty of this area almost feels magical, and it has definitely placed a spell on both myself and my husband. If you are considering a trip there, check dates before Memorial Day or after Labor Day. You are almost guaranteed to have an affordable, crowd-free vacation!

For my family and friends who were excited to watch my blog blossom in 2018 – probably experienced confusion when I began posting infrequently close to the end of summer. If you all remember correctly, I injured myself during a fitness challenge…then a few months later ended up having surgery unrelated to that injury. The months following were a whirlwind of recuperating all the while planning for our March 30th wedding date.

When you aren’t rich, planning a wedding comes with a variety of different stressors, most of which have to do with finances. It is so hard to balance a budget, even with the help of wonderful family and generous parents. After reading that the average wedding in the U.S. cost close to $25K, my fiancé and I were determined to have a ceremony and reception not exceeding $10K. Our initial budget was $5K, but we were able to increase thanks to help from our family.

Here are a few tips to manage your costs (and sanity) if you are planning a wedding:

• Establish your budget first. Go into your wedding knowing exactly how much you want to pay for things. This includes how many people you want to invite to your wedding, as many venues you charge per person for lunch or dinner. If you are good with budgets, create an itemized list of projected expenses to monitor your costs closely. You will be surprised at how little things add up! I almost ended up spending $500 on artificial flowers! *side eye at myself*

• DIY when/if possible. If you consider yourself to be crafty then take the opportunity to DIY as much as possible. You will be surprised at how much money I saved by customizing things like my flower girl's basket, guest book, and memory table. Don't sleep on the quality of dollar store products! I was pleasantly surprised at how pretty the artificial flowers are at Dollar Tree, even though they aren't made of silk.

• Find an all-in-one venue. Venues with space for the ceremony and reception will likely save you money on outsourcing labor, rentals, and catering. We had a great venue that included a day-of coordinator, waitstaff, catering, linens, chiavari chairs, banquet tables, bridal suites, and a chapel. Also, this made decorating and preparing the day of the wedding SO much easier! We purchased our own decorations from Amazon. Can you believe the flatware, charger plates, and toasting flutes are plastic?

• You need to delegate. Find someone who you can delegate projects and tasks to. I typically manage events in my professional life, so this wasn’t terribly difficult. However, the amount of work it takes to plan a wedding is OVERWHELMING – and that’s coming from someone who considers themselves pretty good at planning things. If you have the money to hire an assistant or wedding planner, DO IT! It won’t be a choice you regret. Luckily, one of my aunts is a wedding coordinator and the other is a florist so I leaned on both heavily for their support.

• Check Facebook Marketplace and other secondhand apps and stores for decorations, bridesmaid dresses, or even your wedding dress. I cannot stress this enough. Especially if you are planning to have a smaller wedding (50-80 guests) please pop into your local Goodwill to look for charger plates, vases, and cake cutting utensils. If you are looking for silk flowers or other decorations, check Facebook Marketplace. Sometimes you will discover people are practically giving away linens, chair covers, ect. This can help you manage your budget and still have the beautiful décor you envisioned. These beautiful vases (pictured above) all came from Goodwill. I believe I spent no more than $5 total for all three!

We had a beautiful day surrounded by our loving family and friends. It was so special and I am so thankful for the outpouring of love we continue to receive!

When Trips Don't Go As Planned: Dover to Dewey Beach

Last year, super awesome CEO blessed our office with three glorious days off to commemorate the 4th of July. As soon as I found out about this unbelievable gift, I begged my fiance to indulge in a weekend retreat with me. Despite our short trip to the Outer Banks in North Carolina earlier in the Spring...we kind of felt like we were overdue for a vacation.

I found a seemingly perfect oceanfront hotel in Dewey Beach - one of our best trip destinations to date. We had not been in a year, and since we had very little beach time while in the Outer Banks, we thought this just might be the perfect opportunity to have our moment in the sun!

I settled on Surf Club Oceanfront Dewey - a quaint hotel which was recently updated.

I fell in love with the modern beachy decor, full kitchen, and floor-to-ceiling windows with beautiful oceanfront views. I often cheap it out and nickel and dime every single thing budgeting for vacations. This time around, I wanted to be comfortable and lazy while beach bumming it up as much as possible. I figured if I paid a bit more I could have the experience that I wanted.

Initially, I wanted to spend 4 days and 3 nights (Thursday-Sunday) at the hotel - but my wallet was like NOPE - so I settled for 3 days and 2 nights in Dewey. We still, however, left on Thursday. My fiance and I actually "hotel hopped" from Thursday to Friday by starting out at Eagles' Rest - The Airforce Inn in Dover. It was comfy and clean but Dover is a total snooze fest. Literally. All we did was SLEEP. We eventually went to the commissary, got Redbox DVDs, and visited Five & Below...but that was it (lol!).

We honestly saved so much money hotel hopping. We did the same thing in the Outerbanks. It is a great way to check out a beautiful, luxurious hotel for just a night or two without blowing your whole budget.

We were also just an hour away from Dewey by staying in Dover, which made our commute on Friday a lot less annoying.

However, during last week's trip, we learned that we really saw almost everything there is to see during our first trip to Dewey. When our beach bum idea didn't go as planned because of a very chilly cold front and high winds (our sunset boat tour also got canceled) we had to exercise our spontaneity and find our own fun.

Lefty's Alley & Eats - Lewes

This wasn't quite a random happenstance. A week or two before the trip, I purchased a Groupon for Lefty's Alley & Eats. It can be compared to a fancier version of Dave & Busters (or even Pinstripes if you've visited the one in DC).

There's a bowling alley, bar, arcade, laser tag room, and lots of big screen TVs. The food here is pretty good, but the service leaves a lot to be desired. I wouldn't recommend you go on a Friday or Saturday.

Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk - Rehoboth

This is nowhere you want to go if you are on a diet! Oh my gosh everything smells like hot dogs, fried cheese, and powdered sugar and I wept for all the yummy snacks I couldn't eat.

I did have a taste of my fiance's ice cream we bought from an adorable sweets shop called Kaisy's Delights.

I also got a temporary tattoo. Where I got it from...meh...not worth mentioning. It looks super messy lol.

Bottle & Cork - Dewey

While taking a stroll down Coastal Highway, my fiance and I heard music coming out of a venue across the street. Since we really had no plans, we decided to take a peek in.

That's when we discovered Bottle & Cork. The cover was only $5 and we both had a great time! Sure it smells like freshman year of college and bad decisions, but that's part of the adventure! My fiance had his first ever "Orange Crush" (he loved it!) and we spent an hour or so dancing to some great music.

The bands here were AWESOME. I really look forward to the day when 3AM Tokyo plays the 9:30 Club in DC. I'll be the first person in line!

Woody's East Coast Bar & Grill - Dewey

Diet or no diet, I made up my mind a long time ago that I was putting at least one delicious crab cake in my mouth on this trip.

In my opinion, there's only one place acceptable for breaking my diet - Woody's in Dewey! When we arrived we were told that the wait was an hour and a half. No worries...I was patient!

And yes, I got my crab cake life that night and YES I ate the whole thing! Not the bread though...I didn't eat that!

Surf Club Oceanfront (our hotel)

This is a charming, comfortable hotel.

Honestly, the beautiful view of the ocean during our trip made up for the fact that it was too windy to enjoy the beach.

I finally got to use my picnic basket from the thrift store!

We brought a cooler full of groceries and made most of our meals in the room instead of eating out.

We also had TOO much fun playing board games and watching TV. My fiance tried to teach me to play chess and I taught him how to play Mancala. :)

There were a few issues with the room including noise from the people in the room above ours and our room needing refreshing - but these matters were taken care of quickly and apologetically. The staff is wonderful and professional.

We met two (hilarious) con-artist cats too! We thought we were giving food to and petting one black cat, but it turns out we were seeing two different cats the whole time!

My fiance and I did take a quick stroll to watch the sunrise on the morning of our departure. It was so beautiful. You have to witness a sunrise from the shores of Dewey during this time of year.

The waves were huge and foamy, the sand was soft, and the sun felt so warm.

I look forward to witnessing more of Surf Club's evolution! I would definitely stay there again because the staff was kind and the room felt very much like home. They also offer coupons and deals with local businesses and I wish we had been around longer to take advantage of it. It is within walking distance to bars and music venues, but not so close that the noise will keep you up at night. (This is a popular complaint of those who stay in hotels across the street or a block from Bottle & Cork.)

If You Need to Get Away: Manassas, VA

My mom has always encouraged my love of exploration. In fact - I attribute it mostly to her. As a child, we would have our special time together which we referred to as "piddling" in her country way.

We would occasionally wake up early on Saturday mornings, pack a hearty breakfast, and hop into mom's brown station wagon. Our objective: to visit anywhere previously unknown to us. Our travels often took us through the backroads of Virginia and Maryland, which I feel has inspired my love of quick weekend getaways.

For my birthday last year, she gave me a hotel stay in Manassas, Virginia. She booked it to span my fiance's birthday weekend, and both he and I took it as the opportunity to celebrate!

Manassas may not seem like a destination to you, but it is a wonderful area convenient to many fantastic points of interest!

What we did:

Looking back on this trip I can't believe we were able to squeeze so many different experiences into one short weekend!

iFly
My fiance and I kicked off our trip with a visit to iFly located in Reston.

We suited up, watched a flight lesson tutorial video and THEN faced the wind tunnel. This is a pretty spendy experience - but if you are interested in learning more - I recommend you visit their website. We had a great time and it was absolutely worth every penny!

Skyline Drive

On a whim, I decided I wanted to go somewhere and watch the sunset. My fiance obliged my request, and we drove about an hour into the mountains to visit Skyline Drive.

By the time we arrived the sunset was at full peak.

We nibbled on our dinner and sipped on wine under the stars in the bed of his SUV. It was breathtakingly beautiful and totally worth the drive up.

Old Town Manassas

The historic district of Manassas is cute and quaint. My fiance and I love history (and old stuff) so this area was right up our alley. We took a stroll down Center Street, stopped into a bookstore, and took a look around Harris Pavilion. We couldn't leave without taking a photo in front of the "Love" statue, of course.

Manassas was well known for being a train stop (it is currently a commuter train junction) and there is quite a bit of locomotive memorabilia in the Historic Manassas Train Depot. There is also a visitor's center where you can pick up maps and other info about the town.

Paradise Springs Winery

This was actually my fiance's first trip to a winery -- EVER! I am so happy we were able to share the experience at Paradise Springs. The drive to the winery is about 30 minutes from Manassas and is very scenic. We passed many gorgeous multi-million dollar homes on the way!

The grounds are well-kept and the facility has a rustic, yet chic vibe. You are invited to buy a bottle of wine and chill out on their lawn. We were surprised by the wonderful family atmosphere.

After a fantastic tour of their grounds, we partook of a tasting.

We left with their "Swagger" red dessert wine. How could you go wrong with a delicious red, aged in a bourbon barrel? We still have it and are saving it for an extra special occasion!

Where we stayed:

My mother made our hotel reservations at Residence Inn Manassas Battlefield Park. If you can swing the price tag, Residence Inn is a very practical option. Since it is an extended-stay hotel chain, the staff go out of their way to make sure you feel at home.

You can choose studio or suite-style accommodations which both include a kitchenette, comfy sitting area, and flat-screen TV. My fiance and I both enjoyed our stay. We loved the super fluffy queen bed and access to free continental breakfast. Not swanky or terribly modern, but clean and comfortable it was.

What we ate:

I honestly don't have too many memories of the food from our Manassas trip. I think we had the best intentions regarding trying new things, but honestly, we were more interested in exploring.

Espresso Portuguese American Grill

My fiance and I had a not-so-great food experience that we remember very vividly. Before we went to Skyline Drive, we stopped by a Portuguese restaurant to pick up dinner.

The spices and style of preparation weren't exactly what we were accustomed to - but hey - we tried something different!

Okra's Cajun Creole

We ended our time in Old Town Manassas with brunch at Okra's; a fantastic cajun-style restaurant offering flavorful, hearty dishes sure to transport your taste buds to NOLA. The sausage gravy and biscuits will curl your toes, and the shrimp and grits just might make you slap your mama.

If you need to get away, and you aren't interested in going terribly far, Manassas just might be worth a visit! You can have a wonderful time at any price point and it is perfect for a family trip (there is a water park nearby for the kiddos) or a romantic couple's weekend. It is about an hour away from Ashburn, Harpers Ferry, and Skyline Drive. Make it your mid-point place to stay in order to see all you can!

Adventures in Grouponing: Blue Dyer Distilling

About a month back I purchased a "rainy day" Groupon for Blue Dyer Distilling. This is one of my favorite practices. When I get paid, I often put a few dollars toward my activity fund. I usually purchase a couple of affordable Groupons for local experiences and save them for when I feel the urge to get out and explore.

In this case, my bestie and I were in need of a Sunday Funday destination. I figured it was an awesome opportunity to try out Blue Dyer. After many years of living in Southern Maryland, I was very excited to see a distillery adjacent to my hometown! Plus, my bestie loves a good whiskey so it was definitely a good fit for both of us.

When we first entered the distillery, we were greeted warmly by Spike. We tasted our first spirit of the day, a surprisingly smooth and "smokey" dark rum.

Afterward, we took a tour of the distillery where we learned more about the history of the business and its operation.

Blue Dyer Distilling is the brainchild of Ryan Vierheller, Maryland local and (quite frankly), molecular chemist. His business pays homage to spirit making techniques passed through his family for generations. From the reclaimed wood tabletops throughout the establishment to the locally sourced ingredients, it is clear Blue Dyer prides itself on quality and craftsmanship.

Following the tour, we went back to the tasting room to test the gin, whiskey, and rum. Let's just say I felt warm and ready for fun by the last sip. The bestie and I hung around for a long time chatting with Ryan and Spike and learning more about spirit distilling and more sites along the Southern Maryland Spirit Trail.

This experience was not only fun and educational - it was a great value too! I only paid $15.50 for a spirit tasting and tour for two. We also received two souvenir low ball glasses.

Overall, I had a great Sunday Funday hanging around Blue Dyer Distilling. I look forward to going back with a larger group of friends!

Coming Soon: The Rick & Morty Pop-up Bar

Get ready to "get schwifty" because the creators of the "cherry blossom bar" and the Game of Thrones bar are bringing their next pop up, The Wubba Lubba Pub to DC next week!

This Rick & Morty themed adventure runs from next Thursday (August 9th) through the first Thursday in October (October 6th)! That means you get two months to enjoy this experience and - hopefully - wait out the long lines.

In the spirit of Rick Sanchez, guests can enjoy a number of show-inspired drinks such as the "Existence Is Pain" (gin, blanc vermouth, Blue Curaçao, coconut water, lemon, and absinthe) or the "Get Schwifty" (tequila, St. Germain, watermelon, lime, and salt).

The space will span three bars on 7th Street, each transporting you to a different iconic Rick & Morty scene - most notably Rick's laboratory and "Anatomy Park". Definitely expect to catch a glimpse of Mr. Meeseeks behind one of the bars. You may even run into a Cromulun. Sorry guys, no surprise singing contests here.

I'm sure every true fan is hoping for some sort of "Pickle Rick" display. While I cannot guarantee this will happen, I'm almost certain a cosplayer (or two) will spring into action!

Since my unfortunate foot injury, I've been off my diet, and since I've been off my diet I've been researching mouth-watering local treats over the last two weeks. Strictly research (of course) *wink*!

While falling down the Google rabbit-hole, I discovered Maryland's Best Ice Cream trail! I had no idea such awesomeness even existed in my state! Lactose lovers, listen up! The 2018 trail is comprised of nine local dairies that produce homemade ice cream for your tasting pleasure. According to Maryland.gov, the trail stretches across 290 miles through Worcester, Baltimore, Cecil, Frederick, Hartford and Montgomery Counties.

Eleven Pounds Down

A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about my 6 lb weight loss in one week and the steps I took in order to jump start my weight loss journey. This included a failed attempt at a juice cleanse and the start of my 6-week High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) boot camp at a gym not far from my home.

Unfortunately, I injured my ankle while going hard with my workouts. I limped on it for a few days, ignoring the pain - while continuing with my regular exercise and work schedule.

Until one fateful morning, I awoke to a foot so swollen I couldn't fit a shoe or even walk for that matter.

After a consultation with a specialist, I was given an orthopedic boot or "air cast" and told that I wouldn't be able to finish out my challenge. The news was heartbreaking.

My fiance has managed to lighten the mood though. He certainly makes me smile!

The good news is up until that point I had lost a total of 11 pounds! It was an interesting, three-week journey and I enjoyed cooking my healthy meals and working out with the other challengers. Every workout was difficult but rewarding. It was exciting to watch my body change and feel stronger each week.

For now, I'll just be chilling until I can jump back into my classes. Thanks so much for your support! I look forward to sharing the news with you of my recovery!
