As of this date, the Barack Obama Administration is not even a year old, yet frustrations over his election and administration have metastasized to the point where there is not only a new political party being established, but its founder has already declared himself to be a candidate for President of the United States in 2012. Billy Roper, better known by some as the Chairman of the White Revolution organization based in Russellville, Arkansas, has launched the Nationalist Party of America (NPA), and has declared himself its presidential candidate. Well this is definitely turning into Black History month. Gov. Patterson of New York is hanging up his plans to run for another term. With that being said, allow me to introduce you to the first Nittany Lion Spotlight, Olympic Speedskater allison baver. I should have thought of this earlier, but there is an international sports event going on and it just so happens that a Penn State graduate is in the heart of the action. allison baver, a Reading, PA native, will be competing in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics on the women's speedskating team. On Saturday, February 20, allison will compete in the 1500 meter event, with Heats starting at 5:45 pm Pacific time. The following Wednesday, February 24th, allison will be back on the ice for the 1000 meter event, with Heats starting at 5 pm Pacific time. allison will also be on the 3000 meter relay team (though I'm not clear on this event, as I tried to watch the trials and there were literally people everywhere), with the event also taking place on Wednesday. Finally (hopefully), next Friday, February 26th, allison will finish the 1000 meter event, hopefully skating into the finals around 730 pm Pacific time. Born in Reading, PA in 1980, allison ...

This morning I came across a cool interview with baver in Philadelphia Magazine. Rich Rys, who always does a lively interview on the magazine’s last page (and who has written for The Penn Stater on occasion), talked to baver for the magazine’s current issue. One quote that stood out was baver talking about the nasty broken leg she suffered just a year ago: “The physician said, ‘We see this type of injury when people get run over by garbage trucks. Stevenson is currently riding a two-fight win streak with a decision victory over Nate Diaz at The Ultimate Fighter Finale 9 and a stoppage by elbows over Spencer Fisher at UFC 104. sotiropoulos has rattled off two straight wins since dropping to lightweight -- submissions of both george Roop and Jason Dent at UFC 101 and UFC 106 respectively. Singer, actress. Born November 9, 1922, in Cleveland, Ohio. dandridge's mother, the actress Ruby dandridge, urged her two young daughters into show business in the 1930s, when they performed as a song-and-dance team billed as "The Wonder Children." dandridge left high school in the late 1930s and formed the dandridge Sisters trio with her sister Vivian and Etta James. They performed with the Jimmy Lunceford Orchestra and at the famous Cotton Club in Harlem, where dandridge - who had a mixed racial heritage - early on confronted the segregation and racism of the entertainment industry. As a teenager, dandridge began to appear in small roles in a number of films, including the Marx Brothers film A Day at the Races (1937) and Drums of the CongoHarold Nicholas of the dancing Nicholas Brothers (with whom she performed in the 1941 Sonja Henie musical Sun Valley Serenade); during their turbulent six-year marriage, dandridge virtually retired from performing. My favorite part of Black History month is remembering and celebrating the people that came before us. The movers and shakers that changed the world so that we can live the way we do today! Cheryl Hines is a real sweetheart. One of the truly nicest people you'll ever meet. She's also wickedly funny, and a talented first-time director who stepped into a very challenging role two years ago in helming a deliciously dark comedy penned by my late wife adrienne shelly, who wrote, directed and co-starred in 2007's hit film Waitress. adrienne wrote Serious Moonlight as her follow-up to Waitress, and was in development with it at the time of her tragic death November 1, 2006. I teamed with Waitress producer Michael Roiff to get the film made. Serious Moonlight is about a troubled marriage on the precipice, centering on a high-powered female attorney who learns that her husband is about to leave her for a much younger woman, and holds him captive until he promises to stay with her and love her forever. Taking on the role of director for this project would've been a daunting task for a seasoned director, let alone someone helming for the first time. But having worked with adrienne in the past, Cheryl had a keen understanding of her humor and overall comedic sensibilities, and saw a unique opportunity to both honor adrienne's work and make a truly entertaining film she would've been proud of. Having the chance to direct such a stellar cast was very appealing to her as well. NEW YORK, November 6, 2007 — The adrienne shelly Foundation (ASF), a tax-exempt, non-profit organization dedicated to the memory of writer/director/actor adrienne shelly, has announced the November 12th launch of its inaugural EBAY auction to raise funds for its various initiatives which support women filmmakers. The auction will include approximately 25 celebrity items and experiences; TV and movie walk-on roles; VIP show tickets with meet and greets; and movie premiere tickets. Featured items include lunches with Edie Falco, Cheryl Hines, Rosanna Arquette, Keri Russell, Paul Rudd and Jeremy Sisto, as well as VIP tickets, backstage tours and meet and greets with Jon Stewart, Rachael Ray, the hosts of The View and the rock band Maroon 5. Time flies... We're rapidly approaching the third anniversary of adrienne shelly's death. Although she spent almost twenty years in the business, shelly was killed just as her career reached an inspiring new level with Waitress , the sweetly effective story of a woman and creative pie-maker coming to terms with the fact that she's having a child with the husband she hates. shelly left behind a number of unfinished projects, one of which was Serious Moonlight , a film that Waitress co-star Cheryl Hines took over in her memory . Almost two years after that news hit, we've finally got a trailer courtesy of Yahoo . (You can see it after the jump.) I'm happy to say that shelly's vision and personality are immediately visible in the trailer. You could almost close your eyes and imagine what she would have done with it. However, I can't figure out whether it's the casting that I'm having a problem with, or the way it's been morphed into the trailer. I still can't get past Meg Ryan's surgery. And I hate to harp on it, but one of the most charming parts of her acting was her expressive face. However, in their rather positive review, The Hollywood Reporter did say she was "terrific" in the film, and I'm really hoping I agree once it hits theaters on December 4.
