One of the easiest and quickest ways to get the word out about your business is NOT to place advertising online. In fact, many people think negatively about online business that place paid advertising online. There are better ways to let people know who you are, what you sell, and why they should come to you. • If you want to develop an online business blog, it is best to have some writing skills. If you feel you are lacking in this area, get some guidance or have someone else proofread your work.

• The key to an online business blog is regularity. It needs to be refreshed often, even daily, in order for people to continue to read it.

• Your blog must establish you as an expert in your field. The purpose of the blog is not only to get your product and your name out there in the public’s eye, but also to make sure they see you as the one and only source for the kind of information you are providing. “Fake it til you make it” and be the expert until people actually think that you are!

There is no shame in bragging about what you do, how well you do it, and how much better you do it than other people. Use technology to get your message out and customers will come to you!

There are plenty of reasons why you should not trust the business world online. In fact, I have three hundreds emails in my in box right now that tell me why I shouldn’t trust it. I have emails that say I can get a bigger penis, a better income, brighter teeth, a smaller waistline, and even a way to make my dog use the indoor toilet!

I see ads online that tell me about how I can earn hundreds of dollars while I sleep, thousands of dollars just by sending emails, or get a new Ipod just by filling in a few surveys. We all know it isn’t true.

• When evaluating anything online, take a look at the website address. The URL should match the name of the company or service. If you receive an email, check the link’s address before you click on it.

• The business world online is like the Wild West – completely un-policed and full of scammers. Do not part with money unless you are absolutely, positively sure you know the company.

• Do not part with your password anywhere at any time, to anyone. No one should ever have access to any password, even the company who is holding the information you are protecting with it.

• Remember the old adage, “If it is too good to be true, it probably is.” It is almost as if this was written specifically for the Internet!

Online business technology is a term that encompasses all aspects of doing business on the internet. Whether it is email, ecommerce, mailing lists, autoresponders, or ecommerce – they are all included. These are all tools that you can use to do business, keep in touch with your clients or customers, get new leads, and collect funds. However, if you don’t pay attention to the changes in technology, online business technology can leave you in its dust.

• Millions of dot-com entrepreneurs did not foresee the changes in technology in the mid-1990s and they paid the price. Don’t let that happen to you. Keep abreast of the changes in technology and always be ready, willing, and able to change if you need to.

• Don’t stop learning. Technology changes and so should you. The quicker you are able to adapt to the changes, the more successful you will become.

• Sometimes, being at the forefront of technology is what you are actually selling. If potential clients see you using tools that no one is using yet, you will be seen as a maverick – use that to your advantage!

Many online marketing programs (or schemes!) involve mass spamming, deceptive advertising, and worthless products. You don’t want to be involved in something like that for many reasons. First of all, they don’t last – people catch on to the scam and you will be out of business. Spamming and deceptive advertising takes a lot of time and effort and you could put yourself or your email account at risk. And, remember that “what goes around comes around,” meaning that if you scam someone, sooner or later someone will scam you.

• Choose a business that has a product of some real value. If you think it is a sham, then don’t sell it.
• A simple online business is the best one. The simpler it is, the more apt you will be to continue with it.
• Make sure the business you choose is legal, not deceptive, fair, and easy to work. If you enjoy the business, or the product you are promoting it is even better. Remember, that if you enjoy your work it isn’t really work at all!

A simple online business can be found, but make sure you do your research. If you feel like you are being scammed, you probably are. Mom always said, “There is no such thing as a free lunch,” so if someone is offering you something that is too good to be true, then you know it isn’t for you.

You’ll laugh but I honestly had to think long and hard before answering her question! This human being is pint-sized and all of 7 years old. I couldn’t give her too many details or too much explanation. So, I gave her the most basic.

“It’s writing entries in a diary, only the diary is found online.”

“So you make money keeping a diary?”

Hookay, that’s a funny way of describing what bloggers who earn from blogging do. But now that I’ve thought about it, it’s not inaccurate either. There are many ways one can make money from blogs. I know, I know, this topic has been discussed many times, but remember, I’m talking to a pint-sized human here. Kids ask questions that never seem to end, and they love lists. So, I drew up a list for her.

• Get paid to blog. There are many paid blogging and sponsored reviews networks, among them ReviewMe, Smorty, BlogVertise, PayPerPost, and Sponsored reviews.

• Sell other people’s products on your blog. You don’t have to create anything; you only need to sell it. You can become a direct affiliate of companies like SEOBook and Dreamhost, or join networks and marketplaces like ClickBank, Commission Junction, Link Share, and Azoogle Ads.

• Get sponsors. If your blog has a certain audience, look for a company that targets the same group of people. You can throw a contest in your blog; the company pays you and provides the prize as well. You get the money and the traffic; the company gets to advertise. It’s a win-win situation for everyone!

• Sell ads on your blog. Of course, this is only a good idea if your blog is pretty well-established and has pretty decent traffic. Otherwise, it would be difficult to get anyone interested.

• Ask for donations. Sounds cheeky and way too needy? Not if your blog provides value to readers. For instance, if your blog provides information that’s difficult to look for or rounds up templates that others could use for free, for example, you easily put visitors in a “giving” mood. So go ahead, slap on a Buy Me a Beer plugin or put a customized message at the end of each article, asking readers to buy you a marg or coffee. You’ll be surprised how generous many readers actually are.

I know there are more ways to make money from blogging, so feel free to add to the list. Just keep in mind, what you add to the list should be something you can easily explain to a 7-year-old asking, “What is blogging and how do you make money from it?”

“How so?” I asked, genuinely curious. Jim has a business called ‘Eco Deliveries’. He has a team of bikers running around the city, delivering packages. They’re called Eco deliverers because they make deliveries without polluting the environment, but I could sense that doesn’t have anything to do with his problem.

“I believe in my business, but these days, it seems to me I’m the only one who does. Customers aren’t exactly beating a path to my door!”

“Do people know Eco Deliveriers exist?”

“Of course!” He looked at me incredulously, as if I’d grown an extra eyebrow. “Man, how could they not? I advertised in the yellow pages and had the guys put up posters.”

“Hookay, but what about online?”

“Well, I have a website.”

“Annnnnd?”

And, nothing. The long and short of it is that aside from advertising in the Yellow Pages and putting up posters, Jim hasn’t done anything to promote business online which is unfortunate because off the top of my head, I could easy think of 10 ways for him to do it without spending a thing!

• Google Coupons. Sure, Eco Deliveries isn’t a major player yet but who says Jim can’t offer coupons? Coupons bring in new customers and at the same time, remind his existing customers there are many great reasons for them to use Eco D’s services. Jim can use Google’s free coupon tool to put his coupons on local searches.

• Google Local. Here’s how Google Local works. You create an account and then put in your company’s name, phone number, address, and website. You’ll have to verify this information va phone call or postacard. After a few weeks, you’ll get a listing - by map - of your company name or town and industry!

• Yahoo Local. People and businesses can get listed for free in Yahoo Local.

• YellowPages.com. Jim’s used this, I know, but I’m including this in case some of you aren’t. While not  entirely for free, YellowPages offers basic listings for freee.

• Blog Promotion Tools. Help your website gain exposure, readers, and visitors, and subscribers by using mybloglog and Technorati.

• Free Directory Ads. Visit BOTW.org for 60 days of free advertising listing.

• Squidoo. On Squidoo, anyone can create a lens that talks about products or services that customers can avail of.
