Smart entrepreneurs have been running internet marketing businesses online for awhile now, some with more success than others. It might seem that all good ideas are taken and that there are no internet marketing businesses left that produce income and are legitimate in nature, but that is not true. There are plenty of possibilities if you are willing to work.

In the early part of this decade, when the dot-com bubble burst, a lot of people thought that there was no more money to be made on the internet. People’s mistrust of all things technological along with the reputation of the internet being a breeding ground for scammers and spammers led everyone to believe that there was simply no more money out there to be had.

Apple proved us all wrong when they turned their website into the world’s largest music store, selling literally billions of songs, movies, and television shows. Amazon sells not only books, CDs, and DVDs, but baby clothes, vegetarian food, and car parts. There IS money to be made online.

I have been marketing on the web for some time now. And, while I’m definitely no old fossil, my years online have made friends and family look up to me as an “Internet guru”.

My cousin, Jenny, will be the first to disabuse you of the idea that “Internet guru” could mean I’m someone important. “Don’t believe the old folks,” she’d tell friends. “Internet guru just means he can hook up a computer, set up a website, and know how to search using Google.”

So okay, yes, I’d be the first to admit it doesn’t take much to impress the people around me. But, since I am the “guru”, where do I find help when I need it? Who do I go to? Who is the guru’s guru?

If I want to find Internet marketing help, I need to find someone whose knowledge is a little more specific than mine. Yes, I can put a computer together, I can put a website together, and I can even put an online marketing campaign together, but if I want to build my business so that is stronger, more profitable, and easier to run, then I would go to someone else, rather than start from scratch.

At some point in everyone’s online business, they have to transition from hobby to business and that is when you need to go looking for Internet marketing help.

Find someone whose knowledge base is different than yours. After all, you don’t want to pick the brain of someone who knows what you do already.

Ensure that the Internet marketing help you find is given without strings attached. Make sure that the information is genuine and not provided with some kind of spin.

I looked incredulously at my friend, Bob. “Why would you say that?”

“Well, just like the wild west of the 19th century, its full of exciting opportunities, un-policed territories, and more than a few scoundrels.”

That made me think. Bob is right on more points than even he would have thought possible. The Internet is an interesting landscape but for someone who is new to online marketing, it can be fraught with danger, and if you’re not careful – plenty of opportunities to lose your money.

You can work your way through your new online marketing business by trial and error, hit or miss, but you will waste a lot of time, a lot of money, and can do damage to your reputation. The key to online success is not to be found in figuring it out all on your own, but to study Internet marketing and learn from the information others who came before you have found.

If you have decided to study Internet marketing, then perhaps the most important aspect of it is where you get your information.

You won’t find much information by going to a traditional school setting. Colleges and universities can provide you with generic marketing information, but their Internet expertise is usually at least five to ten years out of date.
