Unfettered III from Grim Oak Press is one of the most exciting fantasy literature anthologies I’ve seen in a long time. It features some of today’s best fantasy writers, including Brandon Sanderson, Terry Brooks, Delilah S. Dawson, Lev Grossman, Seanan McGuire, Cat Rambo, Tad Williams, and lots of others. (Full author list). It was a tremendous honor to have been asked to be a part of this collection. Its editor, Shawn Speakman, who also contributes a story to the anthology, is a wonderful human being and very good at what he does. Proceeds from book sales will go to assist writers with medical debt.

I’m especially excited because the anthology includes a newly-released deleted sequence set in The Wheel of Time world from Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. The sequence is taken from the final book in the series, A Memory of Light. Although the main book series is complete, it’s exciting to get new content from it. There are also stories set in the Dune universe and in the world of Lev Grossman’s The Magicians, which I love.

The anthology is available in print, ebook, and audio formats. Pre-order on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and get order signed copies on the Grim Oaks Press website.

A special, limited edition printing with a unique cover will be made available for sale at Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle, which I’ll be attending. If you’re at the convention, check out my Upcoming Events page to see when myself and the other contributing author will be signing copies.

The Stone Golem of Qual’Jom, is a stand-alone story that has a special place in my heart. It’s set in its own world (ie, it’s not part of the Mystic series, or anything else I’ve written). I originally wrote it back in 2010, a full 3 years before I began writing Mystic. The story’s about a blind creature made of stone who lives in an underground cavern and is charged with protecting his master’s dwelling. The story delves deep in the creature’s loneliness, his nature, his purpose, and his eventual journey to something greater. I’ve been holding onto this story for a special occasion, and now I’m excited to finally be able to share it with everyone.

I've published a new novella, THE SONG THIEF, based on the Bard's Tale RPG universe.

I’ve spoken before about how The Bard’s Tale was one of my all-time favorite computer games. It certainly has the distinction of being the first CRPG (computer Role-Playing Game) I ever played. So when InXile Entertainment announced a Kickstarter campaign to reboot the franchise and create The Bard’s Tale IV: Barrow’s Deep, I leaped at the opportunity to be involved.

That involvement began with contributing to the Kickstarter campaign itself and evolved into me reaching out to Nathan Long, the lead writer on the game. Not only was Nathan writing the game itself, but he was drafting three novella-length adaptations for the original Bard’s Tale games. Basically, he was writing a trilogy of short novels based on the games! I offered my assistance as a beta reader and provided him with some early feedback. Nathan’s a great writer and I absolutely loved his take on these classics.

I learned during that time that InXile was planning three additional novellas, each one based on one of the characters you’ll meet in the new Bard’s Tale IV game. I offered my services, and lo’ and behold, here we are: I’m delighted to announce that I wrote one of those tie in novellas, and it’s called THE SONG THIEF.

One day, Fiona the bard can’t remember a song. This is unusual, since it is her job to remember songs. Wha’s even more unusual is that no one else can remember the song either. It seems to have vanished from the collective unconscious of the entire Baedish lowlands.

When another song disappears from her memory, and another, Fiona and her unlikely companion Soriac (a trow who fancies himself a wizard) begin to suspect foul play. Their search for the song thief takes them across the lowlands, into hostile cities, through foreboding dungeons. Only by confronting her deeply held prejudices can she reclaim the songs that were taken from her past and from her people.

THE SONG THIEF is now available. The only current way to get it is to purchase the Bard’s Tale IV computer game (premium edition) from Steam or GOG.com. If other methods become available, I’ll let you know.

Earlier this month I completed a major upgrade to Dragonmount.com, the big Wheel of Time website that I run. 2018 marks the website’s 20th anniversary, and so I wanted to have what I’ve been calling a “fresh coat of paint.” This process was complicated for a number of reasons.

The first step was to get funding. I was in between jobs at the time, so independently financing the upgrade wouldn’t be possible. So I started a GoFundMe campaign and was incredibly humbled by people’s interest in helping, which resulted in my goals being exceeded.

Once the funding was in place I hired a contractor to upgrade the website design and include new features. While he began working I purchased new server hardware, which would allow us to run a scalable modern website.

Don’t be fooled. The new server looks simple, but it’s packed with good power and sports some neat features. I was also able to repurpose the old servers.

I can’t say that the entire upgrade went perfectly smooth. The website was offline for longer than I wanted it to be, but we eventually sorted it all out and got everything ready. And now I’m delighted with the new look and the extra stability behind the scenes.

Ursula K. Le Guin, one of my favorite writers, and an accomplished master of the written word, has passed away. She was 88 years old, and died at home.

She wrote an untold number of published stories in her lifetime, continuing to work, I believe, until her death. In 2002 she was given the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America Grand Master Award.

I never met her, but like millions of other people, I felt a special connection to Le Guin’s work. On some occasions I’ve likened her in a light-hearted fashion to a kung-fu master; somebody who could stagger you with a single, perfect, finger-poke strike. Her prose is, I believe, as powerful and effective as any other writer’s. She was not just a Grand Master of science-fiction and fantasy, she was a literary icon, period.

I’ve read a lot of her work, my favorite of which were A Wizard of Earthsea, its sequel The Tombs of Atuan, and her iconic science-fiction novel The Left Hand of Darkness. She was undoubtedly one of the main inspirations for my Mystic novels.

Last night, the same evening she reportedly passed away, and completely unaware of this situation, I found a short story of hers I’d never read and enjoyed it immensely. It was “The Word of Unbinding”, one of her first tales, published in 1964, set in the world of Earthsea. It contained everything I’d come t
o love about her work: poetic prose, haunting atmosphere, insightful thinking, and a great story.

I wish her family and loved ones peace, and I tearfully join the millions of people who enjoyed her work and her wit.

Rest in peace, dear writer.

I'll be Guest of Honor at JordanCon in 2018.

It’s a privilege to announce that I’ll be the Guest of Honor at next’s year’s 10th annual JordanCon, held in Atlanta, Georgia.

I’ve been involved with this convention from the very beginning, including being Toastmaster its first year, as well as a member of its board of directors. I admit to being a little surprised when I was to be the Guest of Honor, as I thought, surely, there’s somebody else more deserving? But it was explained to me that I had been on the list of potential GoH’s for a while, and that 2018 made sense for a number of reasons. Consider:

2018 marks Dragonmount.com‘s 20th anniversary.

My second novel, Mystic Dragon, will be released shortly before the convention.

2018 marks JordanCon’s 10th year, and they liked the idea of inviting a long-time member as their Guest of Honor.

The timing allows me to promote and/or announce not only my third novel, Mystic Skies, but at least one other currently unannounced project.

2018 is going to be a big year for me and my creative work. I’m excited for you to join me in all the fun, and JordanCon represents a great way for us to do that together in person.

The convention will be held April 20-22, 2018 in Atlanta, Georgia. For more information, visit JordanCon.org or the Facebook event page.

I’ve got a new post up on Tor.com regarding my recent trip to Massachusetts and Mount Greylock. According to J.K. Rowling, Greylock’s summit is the home to Ilvermorny, the American magical school for witches and wizards. If you’re interested, check out the report , as well as these few bonus photos from the trip.

I had the delightful opportunity to go on a ten day book tour with Harriet Mcdougall, Alan Romanczuk, and Maria Simons to promote Mystic and The Wheel of Time Companion. The trip was inspiring and empowering. Despite the crazy schedule I managed to sleep well, eat (mostly) healthy, and do some sight seeing. I also made a point to enjoy a few local pubs, usually with Alan along with me.

Thank you to everyone who came out to our events, purchased a book, or shared their support in any way.

Here’s a brief, 2-minute video showing some of the highlights of the trip:

Thank you to everyone who’s purchased the book, read it, reviewed, came to a book signing event, or helped spread the word in any way. It’s been an incredible experience, but mostly I’m delighted to have the opportunity to share this book with you.

Reminder: If you enjoyed reading Mystic, send me an email and I’ll send you some special Bonus Content containing the deleted prologue from the book, as well as a sample chapter from the forthcoming sequel.

Speaking of book 2, I’m currently hard at work on Mystic Dragon. Tor sent me a sneak peak at the book cover, but I cannot share it yet. As always, I’m delighted by their work. I can’t wait show it to all of you.

The first 3 chapters of MYSTIC are now online for free.

If you want to see what all the hype is about, Tor.com has posted first <del datetime="2015-10-01T15:39:02+00:00">two</del> three chapters of MYSTIC online for free. I’m delighted that they’ve done so, so that anybody can get a taste of what the book’s about.

There’s only 18 chapters in the book, so essentially you’re getting <del datetime="2015-10-01T15:39:02+00:00">1/9</del> 1/6 of the novel for free. Not a bad deal!

Get them here: Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3.

Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3

Also, coming soon: a full chapter that was cut from the novel. I’ll elaborate on that when it’s released, but that’s a special thing because the chapter is a fun, stand-alone story that tells part of the backstory. It will only be available online and represents the heart of this book’s online bonus content.

Don’t forget that I’ll be going on book tour this November. Get the details here, or find out how you can get signed copies online.

Early review copies of MYSTIC have been seen in the wild.

My publisher, Tor Books, printed early review copies of Mystic. These “ARCS” (Advanced Reading Copies) contain a pre-copyedited version of the book that will be sent to various review sites, bloggers, trade magazines, lucky friends, or contest winners. Tor will send them out, as will my agent, and probably me directly.

Here are some photos of the box I received, which, yes, was pretty much one of the most awesome things ever:

As a reminder, the book will be released November 3rd in hardcover, ebook, and audio formats.

In addition, I’m pretty sure that I’ll be doing a book tour. During the tour I’ll be helping to not only promote Mystic, but the forthcoming Wheel of Time Companion, which releases the same day as my book. O don’t have the dates or locations for the tour, but once I do, I’ll post it on this website, along with my social media.

If you would like an autographed copy of Mystic, but won’t be able to come to a book tour location, you can order autographed copies through my local bookseller. Once the books arrive, I’ll sign them for the store, and they will ship them out to anybody who ordered them.

One of the most exciting parts about being a new writer is getting to see the cover artwork for your first book. Tor Books has an outstanding art department that I’ve had the privilege of working with for many years. So I knew from the beginning that it was going to be a fun experience to see what they came up with.

Part 1: Concept

It’s very rare that an author of a traditionally published book gets to determine their book cover. I was fortunate in that my editor asked for my input on what I’d like to see. Here are some excerpts from my request.

(Very minor spoilers within this quoted text)

Pomella is a 16-year-old girl. She has noticeably dark skin, but not deep brown. (She had a dark-brown skinned father, and a light-skinned mother). She has dark hair. It is cut to her shoulder length. She’s normally proportioned with a modest amount of curves appropriate for her age—she’s neither skinny, slim, or large. She considers herself moderately pretty, but not stunningly beautiful. Depicting her with small amount of make-up would be okay.

Her most prominent outfit is an off-white, long-sleeved, hand-made festival dress with a light-to-modest amount of embroidery. On top of this dress she wears a hooded dark green cloak. The cloak has story significance. It cloak is clasped by a buckle shaped like a triangular Celtic knot.

Towards the end of the book, Pomella carries a “Mystic staff.” Visually this would be similar to a traditional wizard’s staff (Gandalf, etc). This staff is made of oak. There should be no accents, stones, or charms attached to it: just a tall walking staff slightly taller than her.

Pomella is typically seen with (2) small hummingbirds flying around her. These hummingbirds are silver and somewhat translucent. They trail silvery smoke behind them as they zoom around. They are young birds, like children, and tend to buzz around her playfully with high energy and great speed.

When I imagine the cover, I mostly see an image of Pomella, standing in a position that implies the strength of her spirit. I would love for potential readers to see her and think, “Huh, this girl looks determined, interesting, and mystical.”

Pomella is not an action hero. It would be inaccurate to depict her as swashbuckling, or standing in kung-fu-like poses. MYSTIC is a book about an inner journey, spiritual mysticism, and shadowy conspiracies. Thematically, I’d encourage you to depict Pomella in a position of stillness within a mystical environment.

A also sent them one of the mock-up covers I had previously made for myself. I made this cover while I was writing the book, as it helped me focus on the energy and feel of the story.

I later heard from Tor that they appreciated the guidelines I provided, and that they were going to use my mock-up as a starting point.

Tor has complete control over the book cover. I’m very fortunate that they considered my ideas, and actually took them!

Part 2: Photo Shoot

Recently, I had the opportunity to have a Skype call with Larry Rostant, the artist assigned to produce my book cover. Larry is a photographer and has worked with some of the biggest authors in fantasy fiction: George R. R Martin (he did covers for the most recent Song of Ice and Fire books), Peter V Brett, and Mary Robinette Kowal. Just having his name attached to my book is a real honor.

During our call, Larry told me a bit about his process. He lives in the United Kingdom, and works with a casting agency to help him find models. He has also has a group that comes in to do the complete costumes, props, and make-up.

For Mystic, he worked with a young model named Morgan Nia Hilaire. Larry said that he was delighted with my concept art, and immediately formulated lots of ideas.

Here are some photos of Morgan in costume, posing as Pomella.

I love how the cloak billows in the left and middle pictures. Also, notice how Morgan is holding a straight walking stick of some kind, but in the images below, it’s been replaced with the wooden staff I requested.

I don’t know how many poses Larry had Morgan do, but he said that all told, he took about 120 photos for this cover.

Part 3: Photoshop
After completing the photo shoot, Larry worked his magic in Photoshop. The background was carefully chosen to offer the right vibe. Although sometimes he’ll purchase the rights to use somebody else’s background, most of the time Larry shoots his own stuff, and draws from his huge collection of natural and landscape photography.

When he was done, Larry had four images to offer Tor. He submitted these to Tor’s art department:

Aren’t those all amazing? Each of them has something wonderful to offer, but I think that, hands down, the best one was the third image from the left.

Tor obviously agreed, because here’s the final product:

Mystic comes out November 3, 2015.

I’m delighted to announce that I’ve signed my first-ever book contract.

The amazing folks at Tor Books offered me a 3-book deal to acquire my entire Mystic Trilogy. Melissa Frain–whose editing work I’ve admired since before I ever spoke to her–will edit the books.

Every author’s road to being published is different. My story is unusual, but certainly not as wild as many that are out there. Over the last 12-15 years, I’ve had the pleasure of working with Tor, mostly related to The Wheel of Time series. During that time, I’ve come to know a lot of their team, and had the privilege of helping them produce and market some of their top books. I’ve helped them run publicity campaigns, I’ve done video interviews, I’ve given them feedback on their cover art, and more. Many of the fine people there are my friends, and it’s been a joy to know them.

A few years ago, when I was at World Fantasy in Toronto, I was talking to Tor president Tom Doherty. I mentioned I was working on a fantasy novel, and he immediately invited me to send it to him. I thanked him for the opportunity and said I would do so if I felt I had something worth his time. After that convention, I went home, and immediately took stock in what I was working on. The book I was writing at the time was called Beyond the Gates of the Sky, and I was about 2/3 finished with the first draft. It was my first novel, and I was struggling to wrap it up. Looking back, the book was surprisingly well written, but it was too ambitious for what I was able to handle. I spent several months trying to push through, but ultimately I concluded I’d be unable to send the book to Tom in a reasonable timeframe without it being a mess. I’d already been working on it for 4 or more years, so I made the decision to start a new project. I wanted to start with fresh ideas, using all the skills I’d learned over the past several years.

So I began writing a book that I codenamed “Apprentice,” because it was about a young woman seeking to become a Mystic’s apprentice. The premise was fairly simple when I began, as were the characters, settings, and plot. Those elements grew in the telling, of course, and about 6 months later, I had a complete first draft of about 65,000 words. That’s not a very long book, but it was complete. I began revising, and sharing the chapters with my writing group. I added new characters and side-plots, and I expanded upon most of what I’d written. 65,000 words crept to 70,000, and finally it landed at around 75,000. That’s still not a huge book, but it fits the natural length for the story. The working title of the book was Arise the Mystic Song.

I spent 8 months revising the book. Combined with the 6 months it took me to draft the initial manuscript, and considering this was my first full novel, I think that’s pretty good. I combed over every. single. sentence. many times, and incorporated feedback from my writing group and brain trust, including my friend Brandon Sanderson. Convinced that it was time, I summoned my courage, and sent the book to Tom Doherty. The book’s final book title was simply, Mystic.

I sent the manuscript to Tom on a Thursday. The next day, he responded and said he would read it ASAP, as would one of his editors.

About a month later, Melissa reached out to me to make me an offer on the book.

On one hand it seemed so easy: This was my first book submission ever. I never received any rejection letters. I just wrote a book and sent it into a close business contact. But on the other hand, the book deal didn’t happen overnight, nor was it an easy path. It would be more accurate to see this deal as a culmination of over a decade’s worth of building and maintaining relationships, learning the business of publishing, and honing my craft. My hard-earned connections to Tor gave me a wonderful opportunity, but I still had to write a good book.

The deal I received from Tor was more than fair, and I look forward to providing everyone with three really good books. Eddie Schneider of JABberwocky Literary Agency represented me in the deal. I’d met Eddie a few times in the past and I’ve always admired his client list. After Tor made me an offer on the books, I reached out to Eddie to see if he would represent me. He took a few days to read my book and replied that he’d be delighted to do so.

I couldn’t possibly be happier with how everything has played out so far. It’s going to be a fun ride to work with Tor, and JABberwocky to produce the best set of books that I’m able to. I’m already hard at work on the second book in the series.

The first book will be published November 3, 2015, which is the same day the Wheel of Time Companion is released. My understanding is that Tor intends to publish hardcover, ebook, and audio editions of my book. You can find the hardcover available now for pre-order on Amazon. Check back to my website in the coming months and I’ll have plenty of links to get it in every available edition.

In the meantime, check out my information page about the book, along with its official Facebook page.

Thanks for your interest, and I hope you enjoy it!

A look at the first trailer for The Force Awakens

The first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens is here! Here’s the link to see it on YouTube, and here are some thoughts on what they show us:

Who’s narrating the teaser trailer? The voice is clearly intended tone ominous, and my first thought was that it was a Sith or other bad guy, possibly voiced by Andy Serkis, or Benedict Cumberbatch–who has been rumored to be a part of the movie. That may still be the case, but I also wonder whether that’s the voice of Luke Skywalker. Remember, actor Mark Hamill is a talented voice actor, and he’s done some iconic bad guy voice before. (Most notably, IMO, the voice of Fire Lord Ozai from Avatar: The Last Airbender). So I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the voice of Luke, who’s living as a hermit somewhere remote. (Like a desert planet?)

I love that the first character we see for this next generation of Star Wars films is a person of color. I wonder if John Boyega (who is listed first amongst all the actors on the cast list) is actually a Storm Trooper, or just pretending to be one, much like Han and Luke did in the original 1977 film. He looks pretty out of sorts here. Maybe he crash landed here?

Also, just a thought: the name of the movie is “The Force Awakens,” right? And the first shot we see is of one of the main characters appearing to wake up suddenly.

This shot makes me all sorts of happy. Not only is it fun and quirky, promising us that this new Star Wars film won’t lose that spirit, but we can see what appears to be some old Pod Racing engines in the background. I know the prequel series isn’t well-loved by everyone, but I think it’s important that these new films pay them tribute and treat them as important cannon. Besides, the pod racing scene was one of the cool things about The Phantom Menace.

Also, somebody on Twitter said this, which was awesome:

In the #ForceAwakens trailer you may have missed FIFA unveiling the 2022 World Cup ball #StarWars pic.twitter.com/b9cukUPvVW

— Toby Earle (@TobyonTV) November 28, 2014

These next few shots of Storm Troopers remind me of the opening shots of Saving Private Ryan. Even though we can’t see their emotions on their faces, they seem ready and determined.

Blaster upgrades! Maybe these new Storm Troopers won’t miss as often?

I wonder where they’re landing? We have no idea, of course, but it would be cool to see something like Coruscant again.

Daisy Ridley, everyone! I’m amazed at how much this young woman looks like Natalie Portman. And she has a strong Skywalker vibe about her in this shot and the next one. If she doesn’t turn out to be Han and Leia’s daughter, I’ll feel cheated. Either way, I’m looking forward to seeing her character.

More evidence that Daisy’s character takes after her maternal grandfather, a certain Anakin Skywalker.

This guy isn’t Wedge, but man, he sure has that look. This pilot is wearing the old Rebel Alliance logo, but I like how it’s especially beat up and painted. I wonder what the red signifies?

X-Wings! Still the coolest ships in the Star Wars Universe. (Other than the Millennium Falcon, of course). Not sure which planet they’re on here.

A new Sith! (Or possibly Luke, gone to the Dark Side, but I doubt that). What I especially love is that this triple-lightsaber’s blades aren’t as clean as other lightsabers we’ve seen before. Look at the edge of the blade. Notice how it’s rough and torn up? Very nice touch.

Also of note: this Sith is stumbling through the woods. Could he also have been recently awoken? The final part of the voice-over says that both the Dark and Light side will awaken.

I’ll admit it: this energetic shot of the Millennium Falcon flying brought a tear to my eye. How can you not grin like crazy seeing it back like this? I wonder who’s flying it though? My personal guess is that if Han has a daughter, she’s likely to want to take it for a joy ride.

Some people have pointed out that the Falcon has some modifications. I think this is great. It’s been 30 years, so of course they’re going to keep fixing that ol’ hunk o’ junk.

I’ve got a good feeling about this film. I cannot wait.

Practical suggestions for improving your chance of successfully funding a Kickstarter campaign.

I learned a lot in the process, and I’ve been wanting to pass on what I could.

This advice is going to be most applicable for small-to-moderately-sized campaigns. Although much of the advice below is relevant to any size campaign, some of it won’t apply if you’re trying to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars or more. Six-figure campaigns are an entirely different beast, of which I have no experience running.

Also, while I’m being very specific to Kickstarter, the same ideas will usually apply to indiegogo, gofundme, or even patreon. I only have experience raising money on Kickstarter, so that’s what I’m going to talk about.

So without further ado, here you go, aspiring entrepreneurs! Here are …

15 Tips for a Better Kickstarter Campaign

1. Join Kickstarter & Contribute

If you’re considering asking for money on Kickstarter, then the first thing to do is sign up at Kickstarter.com and contribute to other people’s projects. Not only will you get a sense of what works and what doesn’t by watching other people’s campaigns, but you’ll also show everyone that you’re invested in the concept yourself. Some people get somewhat turned off if you are asking for money but have never contributed to other campaigns.

2. Pick a realistic dollar amount to raise

It’s critical that you take some time to really understand how much you think you can raise. You should have an intuitive feeling of how much you can realistically raise based on the “reach” of your social media, the quality of your pitch, and the type of project. For instance, if you don’t use Facebook, and hardly ever frequent online communities, and have minimal graphics and flair for your Kickstarter campaign, then trying to raise $200k for your fiction novel is going to be tricky. The bigger your project goal, the better your portfolio usually needs to be. If you’re a Level 2 Widget-Maker, it may not be wise to try and Kickstart a Level 30 Widget with a Level 30 sized money goal. Be honest with yourself about your capabilities. Take chances, but ground yourself with a healthy dose of realism. As an experiment, once you think of a goal you think you can achieve, say the following sentence outloud to yourself, and later to a close friend of family member: “I [your name], truly can raise [money goal] using the social network I have access to.” Does it sound absurd? If yes, consider revising your target. While you’ll definitely get strangers to contribute from the unknown corners of the Internet, it’s generally up to you to provide the solid foundation of early backers.

3. Make sure you target enough money

I know, I know, I just told you to not push too far beyond your capability. But at the same time, you need to ensure you pick a dollar amount that will give you enough money to actually do what you need done. If your movie is going to cost $10,000 to get made, don’t do a campaign for $8,000. Figure out what you need, and shoot slightly higher to cover the cost of your incentives (including shipping!) and fees. To be safe, assume Kickstarter and Amazon (who processes the payments) will take a combined 10% of whatever you raise. Check their website for specific info.

4. Incentives can cost more than you think

The incentives you offer donors need to be worth it. Very often, especially at the higher incentive tiers, the things you offer donors can cost a lot of money. Especially if you have to ship them. Be sure to take the time before launching your campaign to figure out the exact cost of each item (including shipping, if applicable) and factor that into your plan. If, for example, at the $10 donation level you’re offering an $6 item, with $1 shipping, then that means you’ll only make $4 of profit from that donation. (And really closer to $3.50 once you factor in Kickstart and Amazon’s shares.) Open up a spreadsheet, calculate the costs, and make sure there’s enough left over for your project.

5. Plan for taxes

As of the time of this article (June, 2014), the U.S. government considers money gained from Kickstarter as pure income. That generally means its taxable. In my case, because I raised $18,000+, I had to declare that when I did my annual taxes. Now, I am not an attorney, nor a tax expert. But be aware that Uncle Sam currently wants a piece of your pie, too. Consult with your qualified tax adviser on how to handle this. In you’re up for it, I encourage you to write to your state or federal representatives and encourage them to draft or support legislation that changes the rules for how crowd-funded income is treated.

6. Your campaign page should be pretty. Your video should be genuine

Take the time to make your Kickstarter campaign page good. Like, really good. Use tasteful graphics. Show off your concept art. Include links to your past work. Tell us about all your relevant awards or experience. Ask a friend with better design skills than you to look over your page and offer advice. Have several trusted friends review your write-up. And for your video (yes, you need a video) focus on being genuine and fun. You don’t need to have a high-quality video willed with clever editing and music and visual effects. What you need to do is get on screen, smile, and try to connect to the viewer in a 1-on-1 way. Kickstarter campaigns tend to succeed based on the strength of the idea, or the strength of the person asking for money. People will donate if they believe in your idea, or if they believe in you. If you’ve invented a new method of preventing wrinkled t-shirts… showcase that. If you’re an unknown singer/songwriter, then showcase your charm and vocals. Focus on that stuff before you worry whether your iPhone has a “good enough camera” for your video. (It does)

7. Don’t make promises you can’t keep

Don’t claim your movie will win Sundance. Don’t claim you’ll cast Tom Hanks (unless he’s already agreed to it). Keep yourself, and your promises, grounded. That doesn’t mean you can’t aim high… you should. But keep it real. People can smell over-hyped bullshit from a mile away. (You grokking me? OK, good)

8. Do your homework

Browse Kickstarter’s archives and find other campaigns similar to yours in both theme and money target amount. If they succeeded, try to discern why. Kicktraq.com has excellent tools for researching how a campaign did over time. Check out their analysis of my campaign. If you find other, unsuccessful campaigns, try to puzzle out why it didn’t work. That often may not be possible, but often you can get a quick sense that the campaign owner reached far beyond their means, or had a low quality campaign page, or weak pitch. Use your intuition, and study a large amount of campaigns.

9. Tell everyone you know

Once your campaign is live, it’s time to get social. This is when you get on Facebook and do a big post. Send an email to your friends and family. Tell your co-workers. Call in favors. Identify your biggest supporters–the people who’re most likely to advocate for your campaign–early on, and ask them to help you spread the word, too. Continue to tell people about your project throughout the life of the campaign. That means reminding people after some time has passed, and again as the ending nears.

10. Network

Politely reach out to bloggers, podcasters, message boards, and relevant web communities to tell people about your project. Get on reddit (and learn how it works if necessary) and share your campaign link on the appropriate subreddit. Consider joining groups like Kickingitforward.org, which helps promote your campaign if you agree to help fund and promote other projects after yours succeeds.

11. Pay money to make money

Once you’ve appropriately saturated your social circles and reached out to interested bloggers, podcasts, and reddit, you may want to consider paying a little money to “promote” your Facebook posts so it reaches a wider audience. You’d be surprised how far your posts can go for a reasonable price. Likewise, check out Google AdWords, which you can use to make simple text ads that google will bombard its users with. Surprisingly, these things tend to work.

12. Send regular updates

Once you get backers, use the Kickstarter interface to send frequent updates. Not every day…. that’s annoying. But no matter how little you’ve raised, or how few backers you have, stay strong and continue to update. Often people will watch your campaign to see how it progresses over time. The move “alive” your campaign looks, the more it’ll entice people to seriously consider donating.

13. Twitter

Use it. Don’t fear it. Get on it, and connect. The bigger your campaign, the bigger your following, the more you need Twitter.

14. Be Available

Reply to every email, question, Facebook comment, or tweet you receive about the project. Reply in as timely a manner as possible. Get the Kickstarter app for your smart phone and reply to questions while you’re waiting in line at the grocery store. Make sure people see you replying to others.

15. Try, try again

Sometimes, it all comes down to dumb luck. Maybe your campaign gets featured on Kickstarter.com (not likely). Maybe you get somebody to make a significant donation. Maybe you get mentioned by somebody with a large social following. There’s always a chance you’ll get lucky. Find a deity of good fortune and chant their name. A lot. But if it turns out that your campaign doesn’t succeed, you can always try again. Be honest with yourself as to why your campaign didn’t work, and work to patch that hole. Sharpen your pitch. Re-work your video. Improve your incentives. Broaden your social networks. There’s plenty of campaigns that failed the first time, but worked hard to level up and succeeded the second time.

Dream big, but think real. Promote like crazy, but stay genuine. Good luck!

The Tomb Raider reboot is a winner.

Several months ago I played Tomb Raider, the 2013 reboot of the popular video game franchise. I’ve been a long time fan of the series, having played the very first one back in 1996. My experience with the franchise began when I was a freshman in college. There was this guy who lived across from me in the residence halls. He was dead broke and desperate for cash. So he sold me his Tomb Raider CD-ROM for $10. I didn’t expect the game to be so enjoyable, but it captured me right away.

In the years since, I tried some of the sequels that were produced, but most of them fell short of the original, or tried to do too much. The longer the series stuck around, the zanier the plots became, and the bigger Lara Crafts’s bosom grew. Tomb Raider’s marketing, at least, seemed focused on the wrong areas.

Then came last year’s franchise reboot. What a difference! The new game provided an origin story for the series heroine, Lara Croft. When you begin the game she’s just a 20-something grad student traveling to a remote location in order to hopefully discover a lost civilization. Of course she gets more than she bargains for and is forced to deal with all sorts of terrible events. What I especially love is how human the writers and developers made Lara. The first time she kills a bad guy, she’s downright traumatized. As the player, I really believed her journey from a brave young woman to a hardened adventurer.

The game’s plot was well-contained and enjoyable. I loved discovering the secrets of the lost civilization. My favorite part was discovering the optional tombs and raiding their treasures. Easily the most enjoyable weapon in the game was the bow and arrow (and all its upgrades). At time I felt like I was playing Thief, because of all the sneaking around and silent assassinations.

Here are some screen captures from the game I played. The majority of them are from actual gameplay, and not from cut scenes. (Click to enlarge any of them)

Here’s the announcement trailer for the sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider. As expected, I’m pretty excited for this. The developers are once again trying to keep Laura real, by having her deal with the horrible events she had to go through.

This is a Framed Fantasy post: An on-going series showcasing some of the beautiful framed fantasy artwork I own. See other posts here.

This past weekend at JordanCon 6, I had many fun adventures, but one of the most special events for me was getting the opportunity to meet Larry Elmore. Larry is a long-time professional artist who’s best known for his art used for Dungeons and Dragons, Dragonlance, and other fantasy-themed worlds.

When I was in junior high school, I used to collect magazines and books that featured his art. Often, I would buy a book simply because it featured his work on the cover. I subscribed to Dragon magazine back then, and I tended to keep the issues with his artwork on the front. Anytime I saw his stuff inside the magazine, I would clip it out and save it somewhere. (I’ve seen lost most of those old magazines. Ugh….)

(click each image below to enlarge)

Dragonlance Chronicles (top), Dragon magazine #200 (left), and 2 of my D&D rulebooks

One of the first things I did when I got to Atlanta for the convention was to introduce myself to Larry. I was delighted to see that he was a kind man, quick to smile, and as friendly as could be. He gladly signed a few of my old D&D and Dragonlance books (shown above), and was more than happy to pose for a photo with me. In fact, when I asked him if we could take a picture together, he threw his arm around my waist like we were old buddies.

Larry Elmore and myself

Signed copy of my old D&D rule book

Of course I couldn’t leave empty handed. Larry had much of his art available for sale, and I gladly purchased a signed print for this gorgeous painting called, “Circle of Death.” What I love above it is the tension between the dragon and the warrior. I especially love the detail of the warrior’s sword, as it’s magical power carves a line in the snow. On his website, Larry comments on this painting:

I enjoyed painting this piece, it reminds me of the old Red Dragon painting, the Basic D&D box cover, but at a much more mature level. The dragon and the warrior appear to be much older, in this painting, and much more experienced. — Larry Elmore

I recently conducted a social experiment with my two sons.

My older son (code name Red) is 8 years old and my younger son (Dewy) is 5. Both have a strong interest in Star Wars. About a years ago, I showed Red the original trilogy (the latest version of the Extended / Special editions to be exact). He enjoyed them as any 6 or 7 year old kid would.

Then, earlier this month, I showed the newer prequel trilogy to both kids. By doing it this way, Red got to see the films in the order I watched them (4,5,6,1,2,3). Dewy, on the other hand, experienced Star Wars for the first time by watching Episode 1: The Phantom Menace.

Now before any of you call Child Protective Services on me, let me emphasize that Dewy is 5 years old and he loved Episode 1. And guess what? His favorite character? Yup, you guessed it: Jar Jar Binks.

I plan to show them the original trilogy again soon. This will be Red’s second pass at it, and Dewy’s first. I won’t know for a while what sort of impact this has on each one of them, but I figured this was the easiest way to answer the question of “what order should you watch the movies in?”

And for those of you hating on the prequel trilogy… Look, they were’t great films. We can agree on that. But I’m not going to deny them the fun they can offer. At this young age my boys are just enjoying seeing aliens and Jedi and Sith running around the galaxy. At least Dewy will grow up without a hatred in his heart for Jar Jar like some fans seem to have. And hate, as we know, is a tool of the Dark Side.

Speaking of the Dark Side: here’s a photo of the boys dressed in their Sith Halloween costumes. Dewy as Vader, and Red as Darth Maul. (We’ve since acquired the double-bladed lightsaber)

It’s been a while since I posted anything to this blog, hasn’t it?

I’ve been spending my available free-time writing a new book. The likely title (subject to change) is Awake the Mystic Song. It’s a YA fantasy novel and the first in a trilogy. You can read a more about it here.

In honor of Dragonmount.com’s 15th anniversary, somebody on our staff interviewed Jennifer Liang and I. Head over to the site to check it out.

Along with that purchase, I also acquired a print of his stunning painting entitled, The Long Road. It’s from his series of Dark Tower images, which I love. This one in particular is one of my favorites.

I’m very fortunate in that this particular printing is only one of 9 Artist Proofs that were made. Mine is numbered 7 of 9.

Naturally, I had the print framed. I chose museum-quality glass (as I usually do these days for my collector artwork), and chose to feature a triple matte inside a dark gold border. I wanted a frame with an old feeling to it, and I wanted colors that would really pick out the sunset. The fine folks at my local Aaron Brothers were a huge help in helping me design the frame. In addition to the sunet really standing out, I like how the gray matte nicely compliments the gray clouds and surface of the Dark Tower. I worried for a bit that the matting would be too “loud” and distract from the image. I think it turned out nicely, however. I’m very pleased with the final product.

Here’s a look at the image details, along with the certificate of authenticity and signature and numbering.

Last month I attended JordanCon V, an annual convention in Atlanta where we celebrate Robert Jordan’s work, as well as books and other media by artists and writers with similar influences. The Artist Guest of Honor was the esteemed Michael Whelan, who not only is the most celebrated fantasy artist in the field today, but also, I’m happy to report, a nice guy. In fact, I was incredibly surprised that he recognized me before we even shook hands. He’d seen me in the promotional videos Tor produced for A Memory of Light, and was immediately gracious and kind in saying he enjoyed what I had to say in those.

Naturally, I bought something from him.

I love quality artwork, and I’m proud to support artists. (And in this case, I knew a portion of the sale would go to support the Wolverton family in their time of need.) When I saw one of his concept “sketches” for the AMOL book cover, I immediately snatched it up. I purchased the original painting, and as far as I know, there are no reproductions or prints out there.

Here are some images. Click to enlarge.

The full image.

The painting depicts Rand outside the cave at Shayol Ghul, right before he descends to face the Dark One. He’s holding Callandor, the “Sword that is Not A Sword.”

The story behind is this image is that it’s one of several concepts that Michael provided to Tor Books. From what I understand, this particular painting was one of the top choices to become the actual book cover, but the publisher wanted an image which included the lunar eclipse. If this image had been selected, Michael would have re-painted it, and added a significant amount of more detail.

Despite being only a “sketch”, the image is powerful and ensnared me. The framing is such that it leads the eyes down toward the lower right, as if we are descending with Rand into the Dark One’s lair. Michael described how the cracks in the wall are supposed to imply how the world itself is unravelling.

Some close-ups:

The painting came with a frame, seen below. It was painted on canvas with acrylic. Here’s Michael’s signature, as well as the label on the back.

I’m proud to be the owner of an original Michael Whelan painting. Although I recognize this was “just a sketch”, it still captures an iconic character in a fascinating way. I’ve got the painting hanging in my home office and will cherish it for a long time.

Adventures in SciFi Publishing (AISFP) has been one of my favorite podcasts for years. Shaun Farrel and his team conduct some of the best, most well-researched interviews in the sci-fi and fantasy publishing industry.

It was a real pleasure to be part of their show.
