I just had a nice little hour of fun with Codecademy but wound up taking too much time on this problem: http://www.codecademy.com/courses/functions_in_javascript/1#!/exercises/2

Here's a hint (and then an answer) to help you figure this one out. The unstated goal is to see the output of cube("test"). How can you do that?

Highlight the lines below for some additional help:

Perhaps you could send the results of that call to the console log?

Line 6 in the example shows how to put the output of cube(5) in the console ;)

Increase font size in Microsoft Outlook 2011 for Mac

I recently started using Microsoft Outlook 2011 for Mac and don't really like it because it slows me down. There is no ribbon interface, the keyboard shortcut for find is clunky (Cmd-Opt-F), and I have to manually click the Subfolders to search within subfolders. But the worst thing is that the fonts are really small and I can't seem to change them. Luckily, amadeus figured out a solution to my problem!

I made some changes that work well for me and a link to the plist file that I use is below. All you have to do is replace the com.microsoft.Outlook.plist file in the /Users/youruser/Library/Preferences folder, and make sure that you exit Outlook before doing this (Cmd-Q) or you won't see the plist file there.

Makes the preview bigger instead of having to Cmd-+ everything (all pics shown full size)

Decode a QR code from a saved photo on your iPhone

QR codes are a fast and convenient way to share information, especially with smartphones :)
Unfortunately, the internet is not always as ubiquitous as we want it to be, especially in subways, airplanes, and about 25% of Los Angeles. So what you'd have to do is snap a photo, wait until you're back to your computer, upload the photo, and either decode it from your computer or scan it with your smartphone from your computer.

Luckily, there's a free app named iDecoder written by Matthew Gao that works perfectly in airplane mode ^_^. You can be in the subway and snap a photo of an app, copy the url, and wait until you're back above ground.

Here are some screencaps of use:

1. I saw this QR code at the National Museum of Korea. I didn't want to pay for the overseas data, so I didn't have the Internet to read about that artifact.

If you want to host a Blogger blog on a naked domain i.e. "http://mystady.com" vs. "http://www.mystady.com", then mystady has the answer for you: (http://mystady.com/2011/01/solved-blogs-may-not-be-hosted-at-naked.html?showComment=1303072919290#c6469598480890494930). It definitely works, and here's a screencap of what your goDaddy DNS Manager should look like.

Note that there is no "www" CNAME entry and I had to go to my Google Apps admin page to disable Sites.

Import Posterous to Blogger --fixing bX-q5k3d4

I just recently imported a Posterous blog to Blogger. I thought that Posterous was very convenient with its crosspost capability, iPhone app, and bookmarklet, but the load performance was slow and the site search was broken.

While Posterous also has a convenient import tool to go from Wordpress/Blogger/Tumblr/etc., there's no tool that lets you go from Posterous to Blogger and it required a little bit of a hack to do this due to a "Sorry, the import failed due to a server error. The error code is bX-q5k3d4"

1. Get a Wordpress account and use the Import tool with Posterous. You'll need to enter your Posterous credentials.

2. Export your Wordpress blog that contains all of your Posterous posts. Doing this will create an xml file that isn't compatible with the Blogger import tool and gives you that bX-q5k3d4 error code.

3. Use the wordpress2blogger (http://wordpress2blogger.appspot.com/) app to convert the Wordpress. Note that this app restricts you to files smaller than 1MB. What you can do is import small portions of your blog with the Wordpress exporter in step 2.

4. Import the fixed xml file via the Settings -> Blog Tools -> Import Blogs tool in Blogger

SlideIT - replacement for Swype

I was a little unhappy about Swype being exclusive to only a few devices that I don't own yet. Luckily for me, there is SlideIT that installed perfectly on my CLIQ, offers a similar "tracing" software keyboard with some additional features, my favorites being:
- Shortcuts that let you assign a long word or phrase to a shortcut so that entering "cublr" inputs "call you back later" or "sm" inputs "^_^"
- Tapping the delete button deletes the last word predicted by SlideIT

Keyboard Input for the Motorola CLIQ ...and Swype

My partner and I are all about speed and efficiency, and for that purpose, we chose the Motorola CLIQ and its hardware keyboard over other smartphones.

The CLIQ didn't come with an autocompleting keyboard, so we had to use this one:

However, a new product called Swype might bridge the gap to a hardware keyboard with autocomplete. I think that it's very intuitive for one-handed-typing on a touchpad, and it will likely be a *HUGE* hit on the iPad and other tablet computers. Office 2010 Beta

I just installed Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010 Beta and have had great results so far! The biggest interface change is that the big office bubble icon is gone and replaced with a "backstage" view that is a reincarnation of the File menu.

The installation was simple: register, download a file, run it, and you're set.

I had a problem in which the new version refused to associate to .doc and .docx files. I searched some forums for how to set or reset the default program for these filetypes but there was nothing out there. Ultimately, I just reinstalled by going through the Win 7 programs dialog and they reassociated!

Automatic Profile (like WinMobile) on the Motorola CLIQ

I've configured my CLIQ so that the appointment changes the profile automatically based on my calendar busy status just like the Automatic Profile did on my WinMobile phone. Read on: http://www.probeez.com/?p=60.

1. Install the Probeez Lite Setting Profiles app

2. Create a profile that turns on the silent mode (I also made my Phone vibrate).

3. Create a new rule--lite version only allows one rule, but that's all you need!

4. Add a condition based off of "Calendar Keywords"

5. Select the calendar you want, select the "Only for 'Busy' events," and have it search for * (ALT+J on the CLIQ)

6. Add the action and select the profile you made in step 2

Now that you have this rule, if you want to create a calendar event that doesn't silence your phone, before you save, hit the menu key, "Show extra options," and set the Presence field to "Show as available."

Windows 7 on my Inspiron 6400 = too easy

I have to applaud the devs at Microsoft as they've done an outstanding job of making the upgrade to Windows 7 simple. I was initially hesitant to upgrade my "vintage" Dell Inspiron 6400 from Vista to Windows 7, but after seeing 7 perform with incredible speed on my test laptop (even more vintage Dell Inspiron m600 w/512 MB RAM!?!), I had to upgrade my production machine.

Like a good boy scout, I had all of my data backed up and even downloaded the drivers for the wireless card (Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-Card), video card (NVIDIA GeForce Go 7300), wireless printer (Epson WorkForce 600), touchpad, NIC, and modem just in case -- and didn't need *any* of them.

In the install dialog, my wireless card was automatically installed and I was asked to pick a wireless network to join. This enabled Windows Update to fetch the drivers for the video card so I could enjoy my monitor in all of its 1680x1050 pixel glory. Finally, the add printer dialog was too easy as I just had to click the OK boxes to install a wireless printer/scanner with all of its proprietary Epson drivers and software. Wow.

All in all, it took under 3 hours to be back to "work" with what came standard with Windows 7 --NO NEED TO BACKUP DRIVERS OR EVEN INSTALL A BROWSER TO VISIT Dell/NVIDIA/Epson--BIG kudos to the Windows 7 team!

Surfing at Kalaeloa Beach, aka White Plains

Kalaeloa Beach, aka White Plains, is a great place to learn how to surf. With a military ID, you can rent a board for $5/hr and with a good guide, learn to surf in minutes! Just remember to get the biggest board possible as a beginner and you'll be fine :). Here are the directions to White Plains beach.

1. H-1 West to Kapolei Exit #2
2. LEFT turn going South on Fort Barrette Ave, pass the hospital (right) and school (left)
3. LEFT on Roosevelt Rd, immediately after the abandoned guard shack
4. RIGHT on Coral Sea Rd, fourth RIGHT
5. LEFT on Tripoli St, past the airport on the right--look for the sign to the Shore Shack
6. Park and surf!

Turn off/stop/disable Final Showing Markup view in Word

This macro will make MS Word start up in "Final" as opposed to "Final
Showing Markup." It's quite annoying when Final Showing Markup is the
default view--this has to stop/be disabled; I hope that this is
addressed in the next version of Office. Back to the point, this macro
will take you back to the days of Word XP and stop the Final Showing
Markup view before it rears its ugly head.

Final Showing Markup *is* shown by default if changes are tracked on a
document. For example, edit a document of your own, track changes,
then send it to a friend. Even though your friend doesn't want to see
the markup, they *WILL* because it's there. This little VBA macro
makes it so that you won't see the markup by default anymore, and
instead will see the Final (without markup) view.

Just dump these lines into a module in your Normal template (hit
ALT+F11 to start up the Visual Basic Editor, right click Modules under
the -Normal- directory and add a Module). Since the name of this sub
is "AutoOpen," it will execute whenever you open a document.
