New NOAA weather radio transmitter in Joplin

If you live within Jasper County and do not receive a good solid signal from the NOAA weather radio transmitters in Avilla or Neosho then there is now a fix for that.

The city of Joplin has placed a 300 watt transmitter on city hall and it is now operational.

The NOAA weather radio in Joplin operates on 162.550 which is channel 7 on NOAA weather radios.

Jasper County Scanner Feed May Go Silent By Years End

Due to the implementation of the new Nexedge digital radio system in the works, the Jasper County scanner feed may go silent by years end. This move will benefit the public safety community in the area and provide interoperable communications among all agencies in the county.

A lot of the feed listeners log on strictly for weather related purposes. I will look at some options on what can be monitored and would most benefit the listeners concerning severe weather coverage and go from there. I will update as soon as the change is made.

Ive been hooked on listening to military air lately while driving I44 for work. My mag mount on top of the car seems to do a decent job. The radio traffic consists of B2's doing refueling training out of Whiteman AFB. On a clear day you can see them above here in SW Missouri. These frequencies are in the 200-350mhz range.

Joplin NOAA weather radio transmitter

I heard on the radio this morning that Joplin will be getting a new NOAA weather radio transmitter. It will be located on top of the Joplin City Hall and transmit at 300 watts. This will cover all of Jasper county and make for a much clearer signal than we are used to getting here in the Joplin area. Currently most Jasper County residents receive NOAA weather radio from either Newton County or Avilla. The estimated time of installation will be May or June.
This means that you will need to reprogram your receiver if you plan on monitoring the new transmitter.

Watch for a PSA push some time in the next few months.

Raspberry Pi Feed

The photo is of the scanner and single board computer (Raspberry Pi) that is

used to feed audio to Radio Reference. The scanner feeds audio through a USB sound card that is connected to the Pi. This means no more dedicated computer to worry about. The Pi is a 700mhz, 512 ram computer that is able to run 4 versions of Linux. The Pi has GPIO pins that can be used for projects that range from robotics to media servers. I have a lot more to explore and will post my future projects.

Deputy takes gun fire during pursuit

A Jasper County Deputy was fired upon from a vehicle during a pursuit Friday night. According to news reports the suspect is possibly Dennis Goode, who is a suspect in a home invasion in Ottawa County and suspected of burglaries in Newton County. The suspect vehicle is a red Ford Pickup. Should be considered armed and dangerous.

Update * Suspect apprehended in Branson early this morning.

The Jasper county feed is transitioning to all Fire and Medical. This will eliminate the use of the feed for malicious reasons but still serve as an excellent source for severe weather information during storm season.

The scanner is scanning Jasper County Emergency Services paging frequency and Cherokee County paging and tone out frequencies.

Yes. The reason you cannot hear Carthage Public Service is due to the fact they have gone to a digital radio system. There are no scanners currently sold that will receive their radio traffic. Not too much to hear on this clip however this is more to illustrate the concept of gaining information from a scanner radio during a storm event. I was able to monitor Labette County OEM on KSICS while the storms worked our way and listen to spotters track storms to our west.

I also gained storm reports from County and Municipal agencies as the storms progressed East.
