Geo-Targeting is using search engine optimization to target customers in your local area.  When many users search for products locally, they will include the name of a local city in their search term.  An example would be if I was looking for shoes in Chicago, I would enter, shoes in Chicago into the Google search box.  This page shows geo-targeted results.

So…Why is Geo-Targeting important?:

  • Most local shoppers will go to a local shop to purchase a product
  • Nearly half of internet users will spend extra dollars on products they didn’t search for when in the store
  • More money is spent offline than online!
  • In 2007 Forrester Research estimated that almost 25% of retail sales were influenced in some way by the web
  • Forrester estimates that by 2011, retail sales influenced by online research will reach One Trillion dollars
