SAB srl, a joint venture between, Api Nova Energia Srl and Seci Energia SpA, had in November last year acquired the Jatropha plantations business of ESV Group PLC, a London-based provider of transportation and logistics services.

On the other hand, Api Nova Energia is on their own, developing greenfield projects in Brazil and Ghana. They have an out-farming project of 25,000 hectares in Brazil, of which 1000 hectares have already been planted. In Ghana, they have started on a pilot plantation with the option to further develop 105,000 hectares.

JatrophaWorld 2010 is privileged to have the Business Development Manager of Api Nova and SAB join us in Rotterdam on the 6-7 October to tell us more about the progress of their three projects and share underlying factors which drove the Italian energy giants to invest in Jatropha.

The UOP process produces Green Jet Fuel which requires no changes to the aircraft engine technology when used at a 50 percent blend with petroleum-based jet fuel and meets or exceeds all specifications for flight. Green Jet Fuel made from second-generation, non-food sources such as camelina and jatropha plants offers up to an 80 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions over petroleum-based fuels.

The system was used for mechanical harvest of a 550 hectare plantation of three-year old jatriopha. Max Lint of BEI reports, “it is feasible to grow and harvest Jatropha on a commercial scale. We are working with many Jatropha growers around the world that have a need for our Jatropha harvester. We are currently working on a Jatropha harvester sale in Hawaii and another in Brazil.”

In January this year, Jim Lane, the editor of Biofuels Digest predicted that 2010 would be the year of Jatropha’s revival. Specifically, he said, “Jatropha will gain renewed interest and traction as a go-to feedstock for aviation biofuels.”

Jim hit the nail in the head with his comment! Within a few weeks of this prediction, General Motors announced a 5-year partnership with the US Department of Energy, and India’s Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI) to demonstrate the commercial viability of Jatropha as biofuel feedstock. Jatropha was also blasted into Space as part of NASA’s “Alternative Energy Crops in Space” study, which aims to study if microgravity can help Jatropha Curcas plant cells grow faster.

With such high profile headlines, it is clear that Jatropha is back for 2010! And the time is ripe to tackle unanswered questions spanning the Propagation, Cultivation, Pruning, Harvesting, Oil Extraction, Processing and Marketing of Jatropha, to speed up the commercialization of Jatropha Cultivation.

He took up his first faculty position at The University of Glasgow in 1993 and moved to The University of York in 1999 where he holds the Weston Chair of Biochemical Genetics and is the current Director of The Centre for Novel Agricultural Products (CNAP: www.cnap.org.uk). CNAP is dedicated to realising the potential of plant-based renewable resources to make products needed by society, and, as a mark of its success since being established in 1999, CNAP was awarded a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education in 2006. Much of the work in the Graham laboratory is aimed at understanding the biochemical basis of how different compounds are produced in plants and using this knowledge to improve production of valuable compounds in existing crops or in the development of new crops. Current projects range from the development of novel oilcrops such as Jatropha curcas to the production of new varieties of Artemisia annua that deliver higher yields of the anti-malarial compound artemisinin.

Ian currently serves on the governing council of the John Innes Centre, Norwich – a UK flagship centre for plant and crop science. He is also an Honorary Research Fellow at Rothamsted Research, Harpenden – the very prestigious and oldest plant breeding research station in the world. Ian has served on a number of UK government bodies that inform policy relevant to plant and crop science, including the Defra Non-Food Crops Strategy Project Board, the BBSRC Crop Science Review panel and the BBSRC Bioenergy review panel. Additionally he is active on international committees including being a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Genoplante – a French Government funded initiative in public-private plant and crop science research.

The controversial report by University of Twente (Gerbens-Leenes et al), which claimed that Jatropha has the highest water footprint among all the BioEnergy crops caused a stir in the jatropha sector, and now, rebuttals from the Jatropha research community are proving that the findings were wrong.

2nd JatrophaWorld Africa Speakers Prof. Bart Muys and Ir. Wouter Achten along with their colleague Wouter Maes from Belgium’s Katholieke Universiteit Leuven sent a clear message to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) rebutting the controversial findings.

Here were some of the key flaws they highlighted in the Gerbens-Leenes et al findings:

The data used by the authors (Gerbens-Leenes et al) were wrong. Instead of using data of real water used by jatropha, they summed the total rainfall and irrigation: the actual water used will be only a fraction of this sum, particularly in regions with very intense rainfall events; this has caused a considerable overestimation of the water footprint.

The other parameters necessary to calculate the water footprint of jatropha ( ffat, fdiesel, and HHVdiesel) were unfounded. The article they cited as reference did not match up to the figures they used.

The authors only used data of very young Jatropha plantations. Jatropha is a woody species, and at the beginning of its life, Jatropha, like other woody species, invests mainly in non-reproductive tissues, such as stem and root biomass. Mature jatropha plants invest considerably less in non-reproductive tissue and more in reproductive tissues, hence the water footprint decreases with age. Therefore, ignoring the particularities of a woody species additionally overestimated the water footprint. For a correct calculation of water footprint, the entire life span should be taken into account.

The authors used data of ONLY 5 jatropha plantations. They also failed to check whether the agronomical practices in these plantations were adequate.

A recent calculation of the water footprint in an Egyptian Jatropha plantation was only 16% of the Gerbens-Leenes estimate. Maes et al. gave a rough estimate, based on data on an Egyptian 1-year old plantation, and find that the water footprint under optimal irrigation was 65 m3/GJ, only 16% of the estimate of Gerbens-Leenes et al. However, it must be noted that the limited data currently available makes it is impossible for accurate caulculations of Jatropha’s WF.

Other world renowned Jatropha researchers have published similar rebuttals, rejecting the Gerbens-Leenes et al findings, including Raymond Jongschaap R.A.R. Blesgraaf, Thom Bogaard, E.N. van Loo and H.H.G. Savenije from University Wageningen and Delft.

Diligent Tanzania Ltd is active in the production, promotion and usage of vegetable oil, mainly Jatropha oil. We are producers of Jatropha oil and biodiesel for transportation fuel purposes and offer consultancy services for anyone who wants to grow or use Jatropha. Diligent Tanzania ltd. is continuously researching all aspects related to vegetable oil. Our office is located in Arusha, but our activities stretch to a much larger area of Tanzania and Africa. Diligent Tanzania ltd. currently promotes the cultivation of Jatropha Curcas and provides farmers with a guaranteed market for their seeds. The seeds are processed into oil, called biofuel, which can be used as diesel substitute. We are related to the Dutch company, Diligent Energy Systems, (www.diligent.nl).

Ruud van Eck an entrepreneur, is the founder of Diligent Energy Systems. He built from scratch a company producing alternative fuels. Earlier, he was the director of a company in information and communication technology, Mr van Eck managed to successfully grow this company within a few years. After selling that company, he was determined to do something in alternative fuels. A big change in career, which he made with full conviction: “I believe in this product. The demand for alternative fuels is very large. Much larger than the supply.”

Waterland Asia Food is a private limited liability corporation registered in The Netherlands and in Indonesia.

PT Waterland Asia Bio Ventures is a limited liability corporation registered and having a R&D center in Indonesia.

Waterland EP BioSciencon SDN BHD is a limited liability corporation registered and having a R&D center in Malaysia.

Jatro Waterland is a limited liability corporation registered in Indonesia, India, Singapore, Germany and Luxembourg and having a R&D center in Hydrabad-India.

Waterland 2SQR is a limited liability corporation registered in The Netherlands and Indonesia and having a R&D center in germany.

All above mention companies are one of the many affiliated companies of the WaterLand International group of companies.

WaterLand Asia Food is focused on the intercropping and multi-cropping of “food” crops technologies between Jatropha Curcas L plantations. By intercropping and multi-cropping “food” crops with Jatropha, the programs become much more economically feasible and profitable for both the investors and the farmers. However, as the plantations are expanded, the local markets are not sufficient to buy all of the “food” crops produced. Export markets must be developed which requires high quality “food” crops and value added post-harvest processes. WaterLand Asia Food provides the agronomy expertise and technologies as well as the international markets to make this possible and provides the farmers with the training, technologies, high caliber seeds and plant stocks, and a guaranteed purchase agreement for the “food” crops that are produced between the Jatropha.

Waterland BioScience has 6 R&D centers located in Indonesia, India, Vietnam, The Netherlands, Germany and Malaysia. Their mission and goals are:

Develop data sets for chemical free organic Jatropha products and its impact on climate change, green house gas emission, carbon sequestration and EIA.

R&D for generation of improved feedstock in Jatropha Curcas through interspecific hybridization and Marker Assisted Selection.

Generation of homozygous parental lines through doubled haploidy technique in Jatropha

Study and explore in research on develop cold tolerant Jatropha variety in the USA and North Vietnam.

Research & Development of Energy and Food Integrated cropping systems;

Bringing marginal lands into productive and sustainable production;

Bringing biodiversity and restoring ecological balance to degraded or deforested lands;

Helping to alleviate rural poverty and hunger and need for energy

Bringing technology to enhance food security and energy self-sufficiency in rural areas;

Supplying better technology and seeds for higher value and income, market, industry

R&D on by-products of Jatropha as organic fertilizers, energy agro pellets, bio-pesticide, “natural” medicine, etc.

Education and training material to farmers and community for better planet and quality of life

Waterland 2SQR is focused on the production technology of Bio Diesel and Jet Fuel. It has a worldwide patent license on an innovative and highly sustainable bio fuel process (the Enzymatic E-Bio Diesel process). E-Bio Diesel, a fuel which distinctly differs from conventional biodiesel, was designed as a fully soluble, high quality bio-additive to blend with fossil diesel. In E-Bio Diesel production the glycerol is not separated from the fuel, but uniquely kept in solution resulting in a fuel-yield of virtually 100%. This alone is changing the scope of the proposition and the potential dramatically, placing E-Bio Diesel above all biodiesel propositions in terms of profitability.

The E-Bio Diesel process offers numerous advantages compared to the chemically catalyzed biodiesel process. The process works at mild temperature conditions and allows the utilization of bio-ethanol, while conventional biodiesel is produced with fossil based and toxic methanol. E-Bio Diesel, on the other hand, is made of 100% renewable, biological feedstock and consequently actually a true ‘bio-diesel’.

Since the formation of by-products is avoided, no energy intense purification of the fuel is necessary before utilization. This causes, in combination with the milder reaction temperature, a very small energy demand. Downstream processing for purification of E-Bio Diesel is not necessary, no waste water or other waste streams are produced. The only waste is an amount of less than 0.1% inactive enzyme, based on the fuel, which is an excellent feedstock for biogas production.

PT Waterland Asia Bio Ventures is the joint venture cooperation between Waterland International Group, State-owned forestry, local & national government, local farmers group, community learning center and JAFA (Jatropha Farmers) Foundation in Indonesia. Starting from production and exporting of wood waste Biomass products to Jatropha plantations and crude PPO Jatropha oil.

Drs. Ir. William Ludwig Nolten, BSc, MSc, in his function as the CEO of the Waterland International Group based in Rotterdam the Netherlands, President Director of PT Waterland Asia Bio Ventures based in Jakarta – Indonesia, Chairman of Waterland EP BioScience, Jatro Waterland, Waterland Asia Food and Waterland 2SQR.

Partners for Euro-African Green Energy (PANGEA) is an international biofuels trade association based in Brussels, Belgium that acts as a platform to support the creation of sustainable bioenergy industries in Africa. PANGEA lobbies governments, provides a network for the industry, and shares knowledge on best practices in both the EU and Africa. Its members produce, blend, trade, research and support the development of bioenergy in Africa and beyond.

In terms of lobbying, PANGEA works closely with the African-Caribbean-Pacific (ACP) Group of States as well as regional and national governments in Africa to develop their bioenergy strategies and policies internally, as well as advises them on relations with the EU. In the EU, PANGEA is consulted on similar matters, most recently concerning the Renewable Energy Directive and Sustainability Criteria consultations with the European Commission’s Directorate General of Energy and Transport (DG TREN).

In terms of creating networks and promoting the African bioenergy industry, PANGEA regularly organises international biofuels conferences in Africa (planned for 2009/2010 – Ethiopia, Ghana, Mozambique, and Sudan) and presents at the World Biofuels Market in Brussels and similar events. It also actively participates in forums such as the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels (RSB) and the Better Sugarcane Initiative (BSI) to ensure that biofuels are produced in Africa in a sustainable way without creating trade barriers or insurmountable obstacles for the burgeoning industry.

PANGEA’s knowledge and capacity is based on its experience in EU & ACP policy building and both its members’ and network’s experience in business development and management. To make the information as useful as possible, PANGEA is currently building the largest database of biofuels projects and potentials in Africa.

Speaker Profile
Meghan Sapp is Managing Director of HG Consulting and Secretary General of PANGEA, based in Brussels.

After studying agriculture at Montana State University in the US, she spent the next 10 years writing about agriculture and farmers as a journalist for various publications including the Wall Street Journal. Ms. Sapp became involved with Least Developed Countries during the reform of the EU’s sugar regime where she worked on a lobbying team advocating for policy and development support for LDC sugar economies post-reform. She has more than five years of experience advising companies and government agencies on biofuel investment and policy in Africa.

Last year, Ms. Sapp founded “Partners for Euro-African Green Energy,” a trade association that links African biofuel producers with the European market where she has been very active advocating the African side in the debate on Europe’s Renewable Energy Directive. Through her guidance, PANGEA continues to play a pivotal role in the Brussels policy arena in various activities from policy and trade analysis to the development of the world’s most comprehensive database on African biofuel projects.

Overview of Presentation
The food vs. fuel controversy cast a shadow over investment in biofuels in recent years due a wide range of market factors that had very little in fact to do with biofuels. Since its early days, jatropha has been known as a crop that did not contribute to the debate because of its ability to grow on land that did not compete with food. Yet as jatropha research develops and more is known about the crop, it has become apparent that jatropha grows better on land where food also grows. This presentation will discuss the risks of competing with food production and opportunities to avoid the clash.
