Nowadays, we used to hear and even read the word sustainability, especially when we read articles about environment and/or green living. Usually, this word comes up if we find forestry article, the writer used to type “sustainability forest”. However, does everyone know about this term? Well, let’s see what search engine provide for us.

The word sustainability derived from the Latin word, sustinere (tenere, to hold; sus, up). Go find your dictionary and try to find this word, it will show you more than ten definitions; however, the most appropriate definition for this word is “to maintain”. In relation to the environment, the word sustainability means “to maintain the productivity of our environment so that our next generations could meet their needs”.

This term became main issue at the late of 19^th century, since global warming becomes a kind of main threat for our generation and our own live persistence. The best way to save our generation from global warming threat is to maintaining our forest, that’s way the new term of sustainability comes up; they call it “sustainability forestry”.

But, what does “sustainability forestry” means?

Sustainable forestry means maintaining and managing our forest resources to meet the needs we have today without endangering our future or our next generations. Any management of the forest resource must include inventory and planning to provide the basis for evaluating and implementing the goals of the landowner.

Why should maintaining and managing our forest?

Well, let’s see…imagine if, you owned at about 10-15 acres of teak/timber forest (or any other tree). Cutting down all of the trees without maintaining your forest, well you will gain a lot of money. But what would you do if someday you have to conduct a payment for unwanted accident, and you lost all your money on it? The only way out is selling your 10-15 acre land.

Is it the only way out, selling my land? Nope, if you follow the sustainability forest rules.

Then how does it work? The sustainability forest works as the land-owner meets the forest harvesting rule, i.e. cutting down the old one and replace it with the young tree. Next three to five years you do the same thing to the old one as you did at your first harvest and that’s the way to keep your forest sustain, also you save the wild life at the same time. Thanks to you their food stock and their habitat were continuously maintained without on purpose. This is how you can save your economy, your environment and your next generation.

This sustainability forest is a simple example of saving our earth from global warming. And it is not a serious threat if all land-owner and every people in this world follow the simple step of sustainability forest, not only to our forest but also to our neighborhood.
