Create a Basic Page Layout in Adobe InDesign

Adobe InDesign is one application of the Adobe family which may be rarely used, but some features in Adobe InDesign is quite powerful when used in conjunction with other graphics softwares. Adobe InDesign is generally used for: magazine lay-outing, newspapers lay-outing, books lay-outing, posters and all forms of print purposes especially those which are using more text in it, do that Adobe InDesign features layout management to take precedence over other graphical features in support those purpose.

In the world of graphic design, InDesign tutorials is still considered very rare. Perhaps because of the use of the software is still minor (compared to Illustrator, Photoshop, etc). In addition, the features are indeed very different from his brother Illustrator, Photoshop, etc. makes it seem complicated. 'Complicated' does not mean it can not be learned.

In this edition I'm going to share a little knowledge of InDesign, because of the many features that are interconnected for the purposes of layout .. I would probably repay the stage tutorial on InDesign. We'll start from the most basic and simple: "Create a Basic Page Layout in Adobe InDesign".

Basic Page Layout in Adobe InDesign: Tutorial

Step 1

Open New Document (ctrl + N) on the File menu. You can adjust the paper size / work area in the "New Document" window . By default, InDesign displays the size in "picas (p0)", if you like to change into other measurement units you just simply type in the size of the full value with units of measure (eg: '32 cm '), after you enter a value In Design will automatically turn it back into the unit p0 (but dont worry, you can change all the settings of this size in Inch or centimeters later).

To change all the settings of the unit of measure, simply right click on the ruler (on the top and right side of work area), then select the size setting that you need. so all the settings in InDesign size would change according to size unit you choose.

Before entering the content, you should first set the basic layout; setting the page number, and adjusting the placement of the Header / footer, with a click on the 'Pages' menu, and then double-click on the Master menu. 'Master Page' is the default page for all documents that you create, in other words: anything that you input in Master Page (either text, pictures and margin settings) will appear on every page.

To set the margins (make sure the pages are still in the Master Page), you need to to a non-active (click) the icon link to a different input sizes.

PS: for those of you who are accustomed to using MS Word, perhaps the mention of the margin setting is somewhat different though is the same principle. If in MS Word: 'Left and Right', then in InDesign would be: 'Inside and Outside'. On the menu 'Columns': 'Number' function in determining the number of lines of text that you want to make, and 'Guttter' is the distance between the line stretcher. Please just improvise in this section as needed. In this tutorial, Jayce-o-Yesta using columns '2 'with '1 cm gap'.

step 4

To create a Header / Footer, you just need to write the text by clicking on the 'Text' (T) and then drag to make its text area (in InDesign, you must first create a text area in a way: click + drag). If the Header / Footer form an image, you can either input by copying images from Adobe Illustrator, etc.. or Ctrl + D to take pictures of the files on the computer.

step 5

For inputting "Page Number", enter the text (T) by dragging it, type any letter, select the letter, and right click, then you will see a new menu, select 'Insert Special Character' / 'Markers' / 'Current Page Number'. So any letters that you input before changes to the letter "A". It is tailored to the title of Master Page (A-Master). Copy Page Number which has been set to the next page (in the Master Page there are two pages of the Master).

step 6

If all the layout of the 'Master' is ready, the next is: double-click on sheet 1 (worksheet). On this sheet you will make the input text and images you need for the document.

step 7

Click the Text (T) and then drag to make the necessary text area, type your text or content (in this example I customize the text area with a layout that was created earlier)

step 8

To set the paragraph, go to Window / Type & Tables / Paragraph (Ctrl + Alt + T) and set the paragraph that you want.

NB: enable "Hyphenate" to display a hyphen in paragraphs break, or turn off to remove it.

step 9

If your writing is truncated at the end of the column, then the sign of 'Overset Text' will appear. Click the sign to pop up a preview of small text on your cursor. Point your cursor to the next column and click on it, it automatically resume the truncated writings.

step 10

If you want to add the number of pages, click on the 'Create new page'. You can continue your writing on the advanced page. Now look, 'Page Number' which you have set on the 'Master Page' had now appeared in a sustainable manner. as well as Header / Footer that you created.

step 11

Before you save the file, note the 'preflight Panel' at the bottom left corner of the window bar of InDesign. This sign will be colored red if there are errors in the document that you create. Error can be caused because there is still a missing link files in the file that you input or overset text.

If you are finished, you can save your document in InDesign format (. Indd) to continue it later on, or you may save it in the PDF format if everything has been completed.

Saving in PDF Format:

File/Adobe PDF presets/High Quality Print.

Choose the destination file storage, and then click OK. This will bring up a 'Export Adobe PDF' window, click 'Export' and wait until it's done.

In the field of website design (interface), there are some things you will find that which is different from print design. If you are a graphic designer who is familiar with print design but want to try the field of website design or interface, you'll probably find some unusual technical terms. One of them is Slicing web pages.

What Is Slicing?

Slicing is a technique of cutting the pictures or designs on the website, breaking them into pieces and then put back together using CSS and HTML code. Why these should be break into several parts? a website display that looks intact is not the same as when you see a brochure that is really a complete printout of a design.

All the elements (images, design) emerged from the results of image pieces when slicing. They can be seen when you click on 'save as Web Complete' you will find a folder that contains the pieces of the image. That's the result of slicing. Slicing techniques can certainly speed up the process of downloading the website in parallel, but keep in mind also for not too much make the slice, because it can actually slow the downloading time due to limited number of parallel downloads on the browser.

slicing is the process of dividing a single 2D user interface composition layout (comp) into multiple image files (digital assets) of the graphical user interface (GUI) for one or more electronic pages. It is typically part of the client side development process of creating a web page and/or web site, but is also used in the user interface design process of software development and game development.

The process involves partitioning a comp in either a single layer image file format or the multi-layer native file format of the graphic art software used for partitioning. Once partitioned, one would save them as separate image files, typically in GIF, JPEG or PNG format in either a batch process or one at a time. Multi-layered image files may include multiple versions or states of the same image, often used for animations or widgets.

4 important things in slicing Web graphics

1. Crop tool / Slice tool

Each designer has its own ways and tactics and in doing different projects. That's fine, the important thing is that we can work fine in a timely manner. Slicing techniques in Photoshop can be done using the Slice tool or manually with the Crop tool. I personally prefer the crop tool. If using a slice tool, you can indeed be automatically cut off some parts at once in one 'slice' and instantly save for web in a single folder for all files of these pieces.

But this will make it difficult if the file is a transparent file which is lay on a background. Well, could it still be done, but it would be easier for the programmer if we split up the image files with transparent background. Well, it still can be done, but would not that be much easier for the programmer if you split up the transparent image file from its background? :)

2. slicing the tips and middle of the background

For slicing a field, for example in the background or on a curved corner box (with a rounded rectangle) certainly has a way to cut each. If to be cut is a field box, eg for background writing with pointed toes then you just need to thin cut on one part only.

Meanwhile, if the area to be cut has curved corners, you just need to cut on the tip of the left-right or top down (depending on the direction of the effect of gradation if any) and the center.

Why just need to cut or thin like that and that's only 3 parts? Because later on when you want to create a code (html / css), if the same field and the texture or without texture, the code will unite with the repeat result is the center piece (either vertical or horizontal direction). In contrast, if the image is an image or texture that is not evenly distributed, of course you can not use the 'repeat' code, which causing messy result.

3. Gradation Slicing

As discussed earlier, the slicing technique for graded fields depend on the direction of gradation. Horizontal or Vertical. If it is horizontal with a curved tip, then you cut the tip of the left, center and right end.

But if it is vertical with a curved edge, the part that you need to cut is the tip top, middle and lower end. Let the programmer to repeat its middle course. Let the programmers who repeated the middle. The figure below is an example of a pointed tip, so it only needs one piece only, the programmers who will repeat it later.

4. Folder Naming

For slicing files naming, its important to remember that you can not use spaces, for example, you're going to name an image with '05 ', then you should name it with'image05'or 'image_05'. Because the HTML code can not read files that using spaces on it's name. Its better to use a numbering or alphabetical order to ease the programmer when opening the these file, especially for a sequence file. All must be in one folder only, not separate nor a folder within a folder.

Conclusion

At first, to the designer who is unfamiliar in terms of slicing, may be confused about where to start, or what should be dislicing. For the slicing process is only required graphics software, for those of you who are familiar with graphics software certainly had no difficulty during the process of slicing.

If you have difficulties to determine the slicing, you better to discuss it with your programmer / coder, because they who later received the results of your slicing and then put them together into a whole web page.

Leonardo da Vinci's better known for his paintings of the famous Mona Lisa and Last Supper. Although Leonardo is actually more accurately described as an inventor for a variety of ; ideas, concepts and inventions that are also carried by this Florence, Italy man.

There are some thoughts of Leonardo in his note book as much as 7,000 pages. In this book, there is also a sketch about the study of the human body. Back then, the anatomy of the human body is nothing more than mere 'assumption' because anyone is strictly prohibited dissect dead bodies. When translated means "unclearly". The definition of "unclearly" in this case is the willingness to embrace ambiguity, paradox, and uncertainty. The most important Da Vinci's genius characteristic: its ability to handle the sense of mystery (curiosity).

5. Arte / scienza

Arte / scienza is "the development of a balance between science and art, logic and imagination". That means we must develop ways of thinking to empower the entire capacity of the brain. Mind mapping is a powerful method in helping to combine logic and imagination in every activity / work in life.

6. Corporalità.

Corporalità is "preserving grace, ambidexterity, fitness, and poise". Leonardo has a remarkable physical abilities are complemented by their versatility in terms of science and art. For us, it can be trained by physical training, yoga, or spiritual exercises. For example, Leonardo could write with both hands. In addition to his talent, of course it can be trained if we want.

7. Connessione.

Connessione Briefly understood as: "thinking system" One major source of Leonardo's creativity is his ability to form new patterns through connections and combinations of different elements.

“Courthouse Brewery is an extremely small, family run brewery run out of the old Courthouse situated in Dalgety, NSW. While currently only brewing reasonably small batches for distribution amongst family and friends, the brewery has the capabilities of brewing on a far larger scale for commercial sale. The brewery wanted to create branding that could be used across all of their products as a generic label for the beer they brewed.

My solution was some branding that was, for convenience, printed on packaging tape, and could be cut and fitted to the individual bottles or to boxes of the beer for storage or distribution. I designed a generic label that could be used across all of their different brews and filled in individually or with another label in case they ever felt the need for the extra information for sale or storage purposes.

The branding concept was designed to communicate the same “fill in the blanks” idea that the labels were based on. This idea also communicated the kind of personal attention given to each batch of beer they make and shows the personal love and care this family has for their brewing.”

During the research, I discovered that people who purchase Bang & Olufsen products seldom seek for merely its technical quality, but also the design, user interaction and emotional appeal. Pluto skin care is targeted exclusively towards the high-income sector and design-savvy men that are 40 years old and above. The skin care line aims to deliver mostly everything a man could ever desire: character, charisma, and class. Inspired by Bang & Olufsen’s distinctive minimal aesthetics, the products rely upon basic geometric shapes to perform their function.”

“The “blanc” is the white wine grape variety of the Jaspi collection.

“The “cucó” is an architectural piece typical of the Priorat region. It is a stone cottage with a small entrance (in the form of an “o”), located on the cultivated land. This cottage was used as a refuge in bad weather, and also as a place to rest when the farmer have to travel between their lands.

The graphic of the wine was born as a synthesis of the “cucó” looking for a strong and attractive image, for a wine that goes to a public who love´s wine. They seek for a good value for money, but also an exclusive design for the bottle.”

“Russky is a project for logo class where we had to come up with a hotel idea. I decided to go with Russian theme for my hotel idea. Russky would be a prestigious and luxurious boutique opening it’s location in the heart of San Diego. The hotel will have identity and branding system to appeal to hip and urban young professionals, ages 25-40. The unique challenge of this task was not to relay on stereotypical elements of Russian culture that American audience is most familiar with, instead I decided to look beyond commonly known novelties. I searched for inspiration from vintage documentation during Soviet Era, 40′s and 50′s Russian fine art, and of course propaganda posters. The key was to combine all those traditional and historical features with the clean look of contemporary design movement. With that combination of ingredients I was able to give a fresh look to a familiar subject of Russian constructivism and old world charm. Russky hotel is a history driven concept without looking dated provides an ultimate New Russian experience that is integrated into brand’s sensibility through luxurious accommodations and attention to detail.”

Carl wine is an independent and family owned company founted in 1973 by Erling Carl, and currently under the management and ownership of his two sons, Michael and Gert Carl. During its more than 35 years of existence the company has developed from a one-man operation, to a business group with wine production in Bordeaux and Romania.

The Romanian low-medium prized wines are sold in discount grosery shops. The insight is that people buying wine in discount shops often know very little to nothing about wine. Therefore we wanted the help the consumer by letting the label reflect the taste and quality of the individual wine. From the cheap Merlot/Sangiovese to the more expensive Reserve and white wine.

This deep, rich, Cabernet Sauvignon has a strong backbone of tartness, as strong as the determined Harvey Milk, whom fought for equal rights in San Francisco as well as gay rights nationwide. In particular, the half full bottle of milk, represents Harvey’s positive attitude and take on life, despite his many obstacles. Seeing as Harvey was environmentally conscious, the box that houses the wine was created out of one sheet of board with no glue.

As Harvey Milk once said, “I have tasted freedom. I will not give up that which I have tasted. I have a lot more to drink.”

This is a pretty innovative bike design called Zaha Hadid designed by Marina Gatelli. The bike has a thick frame shape, a shape with a minimalist structural elements, fragmentation, and the 'fluid line' firm which has inspired the formation of the design of this bike.

The designer has to specify some materials such as kevlar and carbon fiber so the bike does not seem stiff, and simultaneously increase the strength with lighter weight. This design is intended for the young man who loved innovation and greatly appreciate the reliable performance in addition to the apparent aesthetic value, so the features presented on this bike are: robustness, lightweight, and looks very aesthetic.

Working on a writing project requires commitment, consistency and also the ability to manage self-motivation. Not infrequently, the 'ghost writer' and a variety of other freelancer's professions will condition their environment in order to keep a good mood at work. What sort of things that could spur the creativity of the freelancer while working?

What Inspires Freelancers at Work?

Someone

Who's the person? The answer may vary depends on freelancer marital status. For those which are single, the 'someone' could be parents, brothers or sisters, boy/girlfriend or even their friends. As for freelancers which are married, the creativity trigger generally come from family members, spouses and children.

A Place

If you're an online freelancer and dreamed of traveling to a place, for example, to the holy city of Mecca, will certainly try it out so that the dream can be achieved. By imagining a situation as if it had been there, it is expected that spirit we will be encouraged in order to make it as a reality.

Time to Write

Writing at night, and during the day has its own impression of the 'ghost writer'. As with other areas of freelancers, most freelancer writer prefers to write at night. This is understandable because at night is a preferable condition where the atmosphere was fairly quiet, the brain can be relaxed with minimal interference from the environment.

“Lemonies estate is an agrotourism unit which is located in the traditional village of Lamyra in Andros island. Its luscious gardens include more than 50 lemon trees, under the shade of which, guests may enjoy their breakfast.

The source of inspiration for the design of the logo which resembles a lemon tree was the ground plan of the estate. The shape of the tree was inspired by the boundaries of the estate, while its fruits correspond to the buildings and facilities of the estate.

The symbol is completed with the addition of a quadrant of the slice of a lemon in each fruit. The handwritten style of the title suggests the anthropocentic character of the project.”

Thirdly, a blackboard black and white, fresh everyday style to reflect it with the handmade quality of the process. The only colour online is the photography, and instore, of the excellent product itself.”

“Project: The object of the project was to design an ecological olive oil produced by “Mas de Santa Creu” in the area of Siurana, Catalunya. The family produced an extremely high quality olive oil for their own consumption and decided it was time to commercialize it in very small quantities per year. The olive oil is produced using only ecological methods. It is extracted from olives collected only from the tree, discarding all the fruits that fall to the ground. It is a premium oil and it is sold unfiltered to preserve all its flavors and richness.

Solution: We wanted the label to communicate the strong emotional bond between the family and the land without losing the simple and honest feel of the product. To achieve this we associated the brand to a vintage looking photography that explained the intimate relation of the producer and the family estate in a simple, classical way. At the same time, the typography used in the name (“Oli”)remains clear and simple, thus adding a stylish touch to a very traditional product. The roughness and the homemade character of the unfiltered oil combined with the clean modern looks of the label produces an interesting contrast achieving strong visual presence remaining true to the nature of the product.”

Smucker’s is a North American manufacturer of fruit spreads, ice cream toppings, health and natural foods, beverages, shortening, and natural peanut butter, dating back to 1897. When redesigning a number of products from the Smucker’s Pure Jam line, I intended for the design to truly and uniquely portray the essence of quality and traditions based on the company’s ideals in a new and innovative way.

Ideally, customers should be persuaded to purchase a product by its essence, and not simply by its label. This especially matters when it comes to a company that prides itself on excellent quality. Many consumers have experienced the growing, picking and preparation of fruit for spreads; in remembering the ease at which one can recognize the colours, textures and smells associated with the cooking process of jam, I created a design that emphasizes the jam itself.

After experimenting with die-cuts and windows that exposed the natural colours of the jam, I discovered that reversing this effect actually exposed more of the jam to the consumer. I recreated a silkscreen effect to contrast the rich natural colours of the jam and moved away from traditional label systems used by many competitors. Many rival companies and products embrace the use of photographic and illustrative images of fruits to give the consumer a taste of what the product offers. To break away from this conventional style and allow Smucker’s to stand out when positioned on a grocery shelf, I depicted the fruits as icons. These white icons stand out clearly on the background colours of the jam, yet do not take away from the distinct colours and textures seen through the glass jars.

Overall, the design portrays a rich and elegant aesthetic that stands out from competitors and retains the quality that is associated with the Smucker’s brand.

Casio Showcase 3D Printing Technology

3D printing application seems to start developing in all fields, Casio also want to get involved to showcase the latest example of 3D printing technology at CES 2012 in Las Vegas (January 9 to 13).

Casio 3D artwork Gallery created based on a 2D image and then developed by 3D printing technology. For now there are two kinds, namely, textured-painting (relief) as in the example image above, where the texture of the painting is very smooth. The second is a 3D digital painting as in the example image below. You can see how Casio's technology is a big leap in the use of 3D printing technology into the realm of art. A hard copy is even nearly approaches the form of preserved animals.

3D printing technology from Casio is not yet released in the market even though they are indeed planning to release it in the near future. For now maybe you can start collecting your favorite photos if you are interested in this Casio technology.

To explore, and find inspiration, and the spirit of work is not easy. As for lazed on a mattress or just watch the DVD series feels more fun than having to dwell on the idea that even does not turn up.

But don't get me wrong, a mood can be created. But what about inspiration? I guess that's not something you can 'wait' till it comes, Inspiration is something that should be 'cultivated'.

Ever heard of a mind-mapping? You must already be familiar with this term, right? By the way, I've also been writing about the mind-mapping on this blog, you might want to read it here: Mind-Mapping in Graphic Design

Basically, mind-mapping is a useful method for maximizing the potential of the human mind in using the right and left brain simultaneously. Mind-mapping was introduced by Tony Buzan, a British development of human potential, in 1974.

Implementation of the 'mind-mapping' is already widely practiced. Some of these are within the scope of such activities: organizational management, learning, self-development, even to the field of writing.

Did you see the word 'writing' which I italic? It was not because of 'writing' is a foreign language anyway. It was more because of the most'intense' benefits of mind-mapping for me. Yes! the field of writing.

Yes, mind-mapping could be one solution when you're stuck and have no idea about what to write. Suppose you have a great theme, you could have made its branches. Of those branches, allowing you to get a lot of themes that can be explored and used as posts.

The Benefit and Solution

Humans tend to be more focused and interested in symbols rather than text. For some people who basically like to read, will probably be happy when presented with too many posts. He will devour all the writings with pleasure. After all, he likes to read.

But try to look back, when you're reading an article, whatever its form (articles, stories, short stories, news, etc.), certainly no denying that symbols such as images, emoticons, or even just a punctuation mark such as '!', '?', or '*' has managed to make your eyes feel fresh and keeps you reading the article, right?

Let us take another example. Honestly, if I personally, prefer to a meeting that in the delivery of it's material is conveyed through the images that make up the form and lines. From the start of the main themes to be conveyed, to the steps / branches in realizing the main theme. It will be easier to understand, and be more memorable, because of the location, color, and words in it so much longer stored in the brain.
