Chico Wedding Photographer : Jeanella + Nasir : Day 1

I have been a horrible blogger and I would really like to apologize for that. especially to my clients who have been waiting to see their photos posted. I am getting married myself in under 2 weeks and my soon-to-be-sister-in-law just had a baby girl last week, so you can imagine life has just been insane! I WILL get caught up. At some point!

We leave for WPPI in Las Vegas in an hour where I will be joyfully reunited with Susan after many, many months apart. So stay tuned to see the insanity that usually happens when the two of us get together. Following that we all fly out to Fort Lauderdale for our wedding. More on that later!

Right now, I'd love to share with you an amazing wedding that I had the honor of capturing last month. You met Jeanella + Nasir a few months ago when I shot their destination engagement session in Muir Woods. Well, the time has come to tie the know! This awesome couple had a two day wedding celebration starting with the Mehndi Party on Friday night.

The younger girls were the most enthusiastic about the henna.

I think she was nervous.

It was already dark when we set out to do the portraits, but we used what we could of the Modesto "skyline". We went back to the hotel where Cody met Jeanella back in October at the Central CA Bridal Show. It was kind of fun going back to where we all started!

I've always loved Henna and I think Jeanella's was exceptionally beautiful!

I'm adding this one for Cody. He came up to me at one point because he just HAD to show me this amazing photo he just captured. I have to admit, she's pretty darn cute. I promised him I'd include this one in the blog post so, Cody, here it is!

Some of the female members of Nasir's family did a coordinated dance for the bride and groom.

Then it was the guys' turn!

It was a fun night! But the celebration of Jeanella and Nasir's marriage wasn't over! Saturday brought an even larger celebration as they held their reception for their extended family and friends. Stay tuned, I'll blog that soon... I promise! Along with everything else I'm needing to blog!

A lot of demand has come in during the last 24 hours that I have decided to hold TWO Minneapolis Boudoir Marathons! Marathon #1 will be December 29th and Marathon #2 will be January 3rd! There are only FOUR slots available on each day and they are already filling up fast. Email me quickly if you are interested!

UPDATE: I got a ton of inquiries for January 3rd and there didn't seem to be as much interest in December 29th so I have canceled the December 29th shoot and have added 3 sessions onto January 3rd! There are just TWO SESSIONS LEFT!

When Ms. C came into my studio for her Christmas themed-boudoir session I'm not entirely sure she realized just how themed this session was going to be! After taking a look at her wardrobe choices- a girlie pink teddy, a sexy black get-up, and her Christmas lingerie I realized we had a fantastic theme here- Naughty and Nice! She loves the idea so we went with it, playing around with "nice", "naught", and then threw a little holiday cheer into the mix! Needless to say, this Swedish beauty has a very lucky guy getting a fantastic gift this Christmas!

Last week I traveled out to Muir Woods in Marin County to meet with Jeanella and Nasir for their engagement session. It was a beautiful setting for a beautiful couple! I love Destination Engagements and the red woods are so amazingly beautiful. Here are just a few of my favorites from the session. You will see much more of Jeanelle and Nasir because I am shooting BOTH of their weddings (yes, they are having two!). So be sure to check back in January/February for wedding #1 and March for wedding #2!

Long time no see! I apologize for the lack of updates as we've been working hard to set up and improve the studio. I am happy to say it is ready to go and here for all of your photographic needs, especially for newborn and boudoir sessions. In fact, we just had our first in-studio boudoir client this past month and I am so excited to share this beautiful session with you!

Julie is gorgeous! She came into the session a little nervous but left saying she really enjoyed it. As always, I warn boudoir clients that they may be a little sore after their session since you are using muscles you don't usually use and Julie said she was no exception. You can really tell she's working it in these images.

Duluth, MN Wedding Photographer : Cara and Andrew Part 2

I mentioned in my first post that Cara and Andrew's wedding had an extremely special venue to both the bride and myself. YMCA Camp Miller is located on the shores of Sturgeon Lake, just 45 minutes south of Duluth, MN. It's not much, at least not compared to some of those huge summer camps out east, but since 1992 I've been calling Camp Miller my summer home. I spent a few years away before returning again this last summer to shoot the wedding of Cara and Andrew.

We jokingly said the theme of this wedding was burlap and twine, but it was much more than that. This vegan, eco-friendly wedding emphasized sustainability in a place that meant a lot to Cara to sustain. I love the details and all of the thought or preparation that Cara and Andrew put into their wedding day. Even the sister of the bride, Jody (another former Camp Miller counselor) got into the day by hand making all of the cupcakes! Enjoy!

This wedding was one I have been looking forward to since I was booked to shoot it last year. Now don't get me wrong, I look forward to each and every single wedding I have. Just this one sticks out due to the people and venue. In many ways this wedding was like a little reunion for the bride and several of her family and friends... and me. Back in 2000 I worked with Cara and her sister Jody (the blond bridesmaid) at the YMCA Camp Miller in Sturgeon Lake, MN. It's at that camp, on 9/10/11, that Cara and her husband Andrew said "I Do".

This is just a teaser. There will be much, much more coming soon!

I was a little saddened to get to camp and see that they had already pulled out the swimming docks, which is where I'd planned to do a big chunk of the portraits. But it ended up being OK, we make what little they had left work and I really love the results!

Rock the Shot Backlighting Photo Challenge

The subject for October's Rock the Shot Photo Challenge is Backlighting. Now, when I first started thinking of shots I've done in the past year using backlighting I thought of the great images taken on the cabin balcony of Jami and Ryan's cruise wedding. Then I started flipping through some older shots and found this gem again! It's actually been my user pic on Twitter since I took it.

This was taken during one of my first boudoir sessions, actually! She is standing against a floor to ceiling window with her hands up on the glass. The sun is shining through just between her head and her right arm. That line going through the picture toward the middle is actually the floor of the balcony outside the window. I decided to keep it in the shot because it gives it some depth. I just love this picture because it almost looks like she's in nothingness but the details of her body are still seen clearly. I used no flash or fill light to light this shot.

I grew up on the north shor of Lake Superior up in Northern Minnesota. It's a beautiful place that I was finally lucky enough to land a wedding job at earlier this summer. Then a couple of weeks ago I had the honor of shooting up there yet again for the wedding of Lindsay and Dustin.

This beautiful off-beat couple chose the Grand Superior Lodge for their wedding. It was a destination wedding of sorts, since the couple themselves live down in the cities area and all of their friends and family had to travel to get to their wedding location. Despite that, they had 150ish guests that made the trek to the "isolated" north shore area to watch these two tie the knot. Now that shows love!

I had a ton of fun shooting this wedding. Lindsay and Dustin were willing to do things a little differently and were willing to let me be creative with the portrait session. As a result we got some beautiful lakeside pictures... despite the black flies that were attacking us the whole time (especially Lindsay... they made the poor girl bleed they were biting so much, but she toughed it up and put on a happy face despite the discomfort!).

Thanks to Lindsay, Dustin, and their friends and family for allowing me to capture the moments of this amazing day.

Why yes, yes that is a zombie wedding cake. I'm telling you, this wedding just screamed "awesome"!!

The cool thing about this venue was it's indoor/outdoor party areas.

Chico, CA Wedding Photographer : Charlotte and Derek

This was the first wedding ever shot by my company where I was not able to shoot it personally. When Charlotte contacted me about shooting her July 24th wedding I initially turned it down as I was to be in Minnesota for a wedding on July 23rd. It would just be cutting it too close. Charlotte asked if I had any associates who could shoot the wedding and I thought immediately of Cody.

Cody has been shooting with my since September 2010. He's a natural behind the camera, always a ton of help on shoots, and willing to grow and improve. I proposed this idea to him and he agreed. So on July 24th I "set my bird free" (a phrase the director at a summer camp I worked at just loves) and he shot his first wedding as lead photographer. Assisted by Ashley, they two rocked it. I am beyond impressed with their talent. I hope there aren't many other weddings that I can't personally attend, but if we ever run into this situation again I know I can confidently work with the couple to still capture their wedding.

You may remember Charlotte and Derek from their engagement pictures shot back in May. I just really love how this wedding is so unique and perfectly reflects them as couple! I have to say, I'm sad I missed the one... and you'll see why as you scroll down.

So without further ado, the work of Cody Lee White and Ashley White. Thank you both so much for your hard work and dedication!

We attempted to re-create the pose from the original picture. Who knows, maybe in 50 years their grandchildren will be re-re-creating this picture!

Rock the Shot Silhouette Photo Challenge

The photo challenge for August over on the Rock the Shot Blog is Silhouettes. And since I just happen to have a few from my shoot in Union Pier I figured I'd enter this one.

Sure, anyone can get one, two, or three people in a silhouette shot! But twelve? Well... actually... that wasn't that hard, either. This happened mostly naturally during an impromptu group shoot at the family reunion I shot in July on the shores of Lake Michigan. My favorite part about this picture (and why I chose it out of the dozens of others I took that day) is the shadows. You can almost make out each individual shadow as it runs off the side of the image.

This is actually going to be a three part post because I realized something today... I never posted a blog post on Jennifer and Jason's engagement pictures! I did their engagement session last summer just days before my move to Phoenix and somehow it got completely over looked. Jennifer, Jason... I am so sorry!

So part one will be their teasers, part two will be the full wedding post, and part three will be their engagement pictures, which I will post in mid-September when I get home from my journeys. Which is OK because, trust me, this couple is adorable and you will not get tired looking at them. I love seeing couples so in love and in sync.

I've had the pleasure of shooting multiple generations in the past, but never before have I had the honor to shoot five generations of women from the same family at the same time.

A woman, her daughter, her daughter's daughter, her daughter's daughter's daughter, and her daughter's daughter's daughter's daughter... all together in one place. Then later that evening the group went down to the beach to watch the sunset and we took some impromptu individual family portraits.

I'd like to thank the whole family (but especially Kathi!) for flying me out to Michigan to be a part of this wonderful family reunion and to be able to capture this amazing moment.

I am still in Michigan and still have a whole day and a half of memories to capture. I just really wanted to get some teasers up for you and the family this morning.

There is much, much more to come!

I absolutely love this couple and this wedding. When I picture my own someday wedding this is exactly what I picture. A beautiful, peaceful setting, close friends and family, great yummy treats courtesy of Tin Roof Bakery and Cafe, and an all around good time.

My last June wedding in Minnesota! Rheannon and Jevon are such a gorgeous couple that you can't help falling in love with. They had a beautiful park wedding on one of the hotter days of the year, but we managed to get through it without anyone melting. The threat of rain was there the whole day, with even a few sprinkles coming down just minutes before the ceremony, but everything held off even up to the reception. As I was driving away it was like the sky opened up and released everything it had been holding in throughout the day. Driving rain, thunder, lightening, the works! If you're going to get rain on your wedding day, what a better time to get it then right after the reception?

I know, I'm late on this! I had two weddings in two states in two days this past weekend and have been insanely busy trying to get those going! But, as promised, here is part two of Kevin and Nicole's amazing Grand Marais Wedding!

I'd like to say a big "Thank You" to Nicole, Kevin, and their families for making me feel so welcomed at their wedding. When you only have 11 guests and the wedding is very intimate being the only outisder can be hard. But they welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like one of the family. So, thanks!

Grand Marais, MN Wedding Photographer : Nicole and Kevin Part 1

This was my first time getting to shoot a wedding in the area I grew up. When Nicole first contacted me about her wedding in Grand Marais my first thought was "I HAVE to book this wedding!" Luckily Nicole did book me and on June 6th I made my way an hour up the short of Lake Superior from my hometown for the beautiful wedding of Nicole and Kevin.

Nicole had a beautiful (and very appropriate) nature/wood theme for her wedding and every moment of the day I was blown away by yet another piece of decoration or idea she had to pull the theme together. Who knew tree bark could have so many uses? I've decided to break Nicole and Kevin's wedding post into 2 and dedicate this first one to their details instead of doing a teaser. The next post (Monday) will be of their beautiful ceremony, portraits, and reception. So be sure to check back for that!

Yes, that first picture is of a bark aisle runner! Beautiful, isn't it?

This is definitely a table set up I will never forget.

Thanks to this handmade tree bark basket, Nicole's pup got to walk down the aisle in style!

LOVE these two! When Derek first asked Charlotte out she actually turned around and ran away! Luckily, she later said "yes" to a date and then "yes" to marry him (and she didn't run away that time). Their wedding is in July but until then, here are some of their engagement photos!

I cannot even begin to tell you how much I love this couple. There's always something about high school sweethearts that warms my heart but these two, especially, did just that! Their wedding is THIS SATURDAY (ah!) so I wanted to get their e-pics up before then. Can't wait, guys!

And then we found a cave... and a cave monster! :)

The weather the day we did this shoot had been crazy! We woke up to pouring rain and were worried we wouldn't be able to get the sunset pictures that Falcon and Freddie really wanted. But it let up right when they arrived to start the shoot and didn't start again until we shot our last pic. Then it came down... with a vengeance! But just a few moments later it stopped and a double rainbow appeared!

So stay tuned... their wedding is coming up and I'm thinking that it's going to be just as much fun as this couple!
