What inspires you as an artist?

I am constantly being inspired. My muse is not a person, but our gorgeous British countryside. My work is about emotional response to those landscapes. Never realistic representation, but expression of how the landscape feels and replenishes us, and the movement and energy of the elements, both visible and not. To always strive for a sense of meaning and connection. Then to translate that experience through paint, through texture, conveying the sense of energy, movement, or stillness, and light.

Which places are these paintings of?

While my work is inspired by British landscapes, when I paint it all comes from my mind's eye. The only time I may use reference photos is when I'm painting a commission for a client. Otherwise I never use reference material. While my work is influenced by growing up in Scotland and by my frequent travels in Britain, and even by my local walks, my paintings are imagined landscapes that develop their identity during the painting process. And from the emotions, feelings and memories that I pour into them. I suppose you could say that the they are the interplay between the real and the imagined.

How long does it take you to create a painting?

The time it takes to complete a painting varies greatly depending on the size, complexity, and medium used. Even some smaller pieces may take a few weeks, while larger works can take several months. Some pieces seem to develop easily from start to finish. Others present more of a challenge and go through many iterations. I never time myself while I work. I tried once, but soon forgot to keep track. Plus I usually have several paintings in progress in my studio at any given time. Some pieces need time to rest. Then I come back to them with a fresh eye, to see where they may need more work.

What art materials do you use?

I primarily work with acrylic paint, inks and other media. I do love oil paints, but their long drying time is generally a hindrance to the way I work. I enjoy experimenting with different materials and tools to achieve effects and marks I want in the painting. Some tools are classic, such as brushes and painting knives. Others are more modern tools, such as silicon scrapers, or objects from the DIY store that make great marks. Plus tools I have adapted or made myself over the years. Then I pick and choose as I work on the painting and get a feel for the kinds of marks, shapes and strokes I want to make.

What does "mixed media" mean?

Mixed media refers to the use of multiple materials and media in a single artwork. Traditionally, this can include a combination of paint, collage, assemblage, printmaking, sculpture, and other elements. These days, digital elements are also being included in that evolving list.

Specifically to my work, my reference to mixed media means that in addition to acrylic paint and inks, I may have included elements of collage, or have also used charcoal, oil pastels or pencils.

What is a limited edition print?

In terms of reproduction (and not the artform of original printmaking) a limited edition print is a printed copy taken from an original painting. Most often printed on paper or on canvas, these prints are produced in a clearly stated quantity. They are numbered and signed on the front, and once that specified quantity has been sold then no more prints will ever be made.

I like to keep my limited edition print sizes very small, generally no more than 10 of each specified size. This keeps them special and somewhat exclusive, and buyers enjoy knowing that not many other people will own that print. The price will reflect the select number of prints that will ever be produced.

What does open edition print mean?

An open edition print is also a reproduction from an original painting, but one that is produced in an unlimited quantity. This means that there is no specific limit to the number of prints that will be made, unlike limited edition prints.

While I don't specify a limit on my open edition prints, I certainly don't envisage printing extensive numbers of these either. I will prefer to retire them after a quantity sold, or length of time that feels right to me and my ethos towards my buyers and collectors. The price of an open edition will be lower than a limited edition print, given that the quantity of prints sold is not restricted and so is likely to be higher.

Do you make prints of every painting?

No, I don't. I've only started introducing fine art prints into the mix in the last 4 years. And I am very selective about which paintings will become prints. Many of them won't ever be reproduced. So, if you see an original painting you really love, my advice is don't wait! 😉

How do you know when a painting is finished?

A lot of artists, including me, find that this is sometimes a challenge. It's easy to just keep adding a mark here and a brush stroke there. And it's unfortunately all too easy to go too far and ruin a stage, or even a whole painting, that you really loved. That's why it's best to leave them alone for a while, and then take a fresh look before deciding whether they are finished or need something more. Of course, there are those golden times when it all comes together perfectly and you just know!

Are these paintings of the Sycamore Gap tree?

This last question is one that I have been getting asked frequently at every show I have done, since one of the most infamous acts of vandalism against nature took place in September 2023.

And the answer to that question, from my perspective, is: no, they are not. I have never been to that specific place so have not experienced the atmosphere and energy of that landscape. And none of my landscapes are painted from reference material. So unless someone ever commissions me to create a painting specifically for them based on that particular tree and landscape...

Yet, in the end, it all comes down to what the viewer sees, and their own interpretation of an individual piece. So, whether the viewer looks at any piece of my work and sees the Sycamore Gap tree, or their favourite place in wilds of Scotland, or the place where they had a lovely family picnic in the Lake District... The fact that my paintings trigger connections, memories or emotions that are special to them, that is the important thing.

Wow, the first week of March has gone by in a flash, hasn't it? Thanks for stopping by to read these highlights from this week in my artist studio. 😘

Firstly, you just never know when you are going to see something inspiring. And you just never know when nature is going to serve up something extra special.

Weather-wise, in my neck of the woods in Berkshire, it has all been a bit 'meh' lately. Mostly monotonous grey. Oh, and often wet! But on Tuesday this week, from my very own window, I was able to watch nature put on a show of absolute beauty and light.

Deeply dark and menacing clouds rolled in, layering themselves over the brief glimpses of blue sky we had been enjoying. And the light...well it was sublime! It hit the bare branches of the trees and lit them up in stark wonder. It was absolutely stunning. Thank you for another amazing moment, Mother Nature.

What inspires my art? Let me show you...

Soaking up nature is an essential part of my artistic life and my wellbeing. This week I started gently planning my next trip back to Scotland, which will hopefully take place later this year. I'm already really looking forward to that. I'm also really looking forward to spring and getting out into local nature more regularly.

A question I'm frequently asked is: "what inspires your art?" So, I recently put together this brief video which hopefully gives you an insight into some of the things that feed my creative soul.

When that connection to art happens!

Last week I gave my lovely email subscribers an exclusive first look at these three paintings. I hadn't even added them to my website yet (well actually, at the time of writing, I still haven't!). But I was so pleased with them, and dying to share.

Amanda was one of the subscribers who opened that email... And she immediately felt that "connection" that I'm always talking about. That coup de foudre! She fell in love with the paintings, hit reply on the email and we ended up having a lovely conversation. And Amanda has bought all three paintings for the new extension on her home in Oxfordshire.

As a visual artist, I create pieces that I hope will captivate and inspire others. That will bring pleasure and trigger emotion. Yet sometimes, with a new project or collection, even after doing this for so many years, there is a little voice inside my head that wonders if anyone will take notice. Or, whilst doing all the hard work that goes into preparing an exhibition, I can't help but ask myself whether anyone will show-up, let alone consider making a purchase.

But what if there was a way for you, as an art-lover, to help ease these concerns for artists and makers? What if you could support artists in ways that make a significant impact, even if that impact is not immediately visible? 

In this article, I explore twelve meaningful, and often very easy, ways to support your favourite artists and help foster a thriving artistic community.

So let me get the obvious one out of way first. But don't worry if spending money on art isn't currently feasible. There are plenty of quick, easy ways to help, which have little or no cost attached.

Purchase artwork you love

Make that art purchase directly from the artist

If you are in the market for new artwork then buying artwork directly from the artist helps ensure that they receive the full value of their work. You can find artists selling their work at art fairs, open studios and online through their own websites.

Attend local art exhibitions and open studios

Make an effort to attend art exhibitions, gallery openings, open studio events and art trails in your community. Engage with the artwork, meet the artists, and learn about their creative processes. Your presence not only boosts the artists' confidence, but knowing they have an interested audience also encourages them to continue producing exceptional work.

Share details of each exhibition with your friends, family and colleagues to spread the word. Share the artist's social media posts. Forward their exhibition emails to art lovers you know. Or people who are redecorating. This will help bring more people to their events.

And after each event why not share a photo and say how much you enjoyed it and the art. Quick and easy stuff you can do to help.

Promote local artists among your community

The community you choose to surround yourself with holds significant influence. By actively informing your friends and family about talented artists, inviting your circle to art events and exhibitions, and engaging in conversations about their artwork, you can play a vital role in spreading awareness of their artistic abilities. If you're part of a social group, organise or suggest a group outings to local art events. 

Share and promote art you love on social media

Leverage the power of social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. And the likes of Pinterest and LinkedIn to promote the work of visual artists. Follow the artists, share their artwork, and provide positive feedback. Tagging the artist and commenting on their posts can expand their reach and introduce their creations to a broader audience.

Your support, in doing these relatively simple things, can lead to new opportunities for the artists, such as exhibitions, collaborations, new collectors or commissions.

Write reviews about the paintings you love

Writing positive reviews of an artist's work on sites such as Google, Trustpilot or Facebook will help attract new art buyers and boost the artist's credibility. Or write a review on the artist's website.

If a particular painting triggers a response in you, write a comment on the artist's website. Or simply send a quick email to an artist showing your appreciation. Such a simple gesture can be a real morale booster. Everyone loves a compliment. And to know that what they are doing brings happiness or value to others.

Subscribe to artist email updates and newsletters

Many artists have email newsletters where they share their latest works, upcoming events, insights into their creative process, and more. Subscribing to their email mailing list is a great way to stay up-to-date with their work and support them. And you will usually be first to find out about new stuff and subscriber bonuses.

And don't hesitate to engage with artists. Most artists are thrilled when their subscribers reply to their emails. So let them know what you think of their new work or the content they've written.

Why not forward an artist's emails to friends or family members when it contains information and content you think they would find useful or enjoy. For example, an event they could attend. Or a piece of art that you think they would love for their new extension or newly decorated home. Or because you know they love blue abstracts, for example.

Offer to host an artist's exhibitions at your workplace

By opening your space as a venue for an exhibition, you extend meaningful support to the artist. If you have a suitable space at the place where you work then this could also simultaneously raise awareness for your company or group.

Seize the opportunity to create a remarkable environment for gathering individuals, fostering connections, and uniting people in a collective appreciation of art.

Have an arty gathering in your home

Here's an idea if you love getting friends together in your home for a social evening and a glass of wine, or for a coffee afternoon. If you have a local artist whose work you love then invite them too. Host the event for friends who love art. And invite the artist to bring a few pieces of art to show you and your guest. Ask the artist to briefly talk about the art and their art practice. 

This is a great way to introduce an artist's work to new people who will enjoy it and possibly become new collectors. And your reputation as a fabulous host of soirees with a difference, will skyrocket.

Become a venue on a local arts trail

Do you have a spacious home that you love sharing with others? Or an easily accessible garden with a summer house or garden studio? If you love art and meeting new people, then you may be interested in hosting one or several local artists or makers during a weekend arts trail event.

Many local arts trails are always looking for new venues. Reach out the organiser of your local arts trail and find out more.

Commission bespoke artwork for your home

Consider commissioning a piece of art that aligns with your personal taste, a specific theme, or adds the perfect finishing touch to your home. Collaborating with artists on commissioned projects allows you to acquire a custom artwork that holds personal significance for you.

Gift artwork to friends and family

Giving a piece of art, perhaps a print, as a present to friends and family not only shows your fine taste and your appreciation for the artist's talent. It also helps expand the artist's audience and reach. And each time the gift recipient sees your present then they will think of you.

Supporting visual artists is essential in helping to sustain their work and the arts. And promoting creativity in our increasingly crazy world can only be a good thing, right? Whether it's through purchasing art, sharing the work of artists you love on social media, attending art shows and exhibitions, commissioning custom artwork, gifting artwork, subscribing to artists' newsletter, writing reviews, or promoting artists among your community, there are so many ways to show support and appreciation for talented artists and help foster a thriving artistic community.

There are probably more ways than those I've shared, for you to help support local artists and arts projects in your area. You could always ask the artists next time you are at an art event. Or connect with local artists on social media and find out. There are so many benefits to art, including mental well-being. So becoming more immersed in art and the local arts scene is surely a path to happiness.

I had the amazing opportunity to sing with my choir at the Windsor Big Lunch Concert on the Long Walk (the beautiful park which leads up to Windsor Castle). Singing in the choir is always a wonderful experience being a part of a group of people who share the same love for music and singing as I do.

But that day, I have to admit that there was an extra special buzz in the air. The streets of Windsor were bustling with happy people. The sun shone brightly on the Long Walk, where many a picnic was set-up. And approximately 300 members of Rock Choir, including me, added to the vibrant atmosphere by singing a mix of contemporary and 'golden oldie' hits. The crowd was fantastic, really engaged, singing along and having fun.

I know that the experience of singing in a choir, and music in general, has a hugely positive impact on well-being. It takes me to a place of natural joy and elation, which I can share with others. That sense of community and collaboration is so enriching. And so powerful.

So I started thinking about how this also applies to art?

Connections between music and art

Similar to a choir, where each unique voice contributes to the harmony of the whole song, each stroke of the paintbrush and each mark is integral to the finished artwork. The importance of mixing and blending in just the right way. And the impact and emotion that comes when combining individual elements creates something greater than the sum of its parts.

Like music, art also has the power to enhance lives with its ability to communicate ideas and emotions in a way that is universal and timeless. Art can speak to people from all walks of life, transcending language barriers and cultural differences. It can help people to connect with one another and to feel a sense of empathy and understanding.

Art can, of course, also transform physical spaces. It can turn a bland wall into a vibrant mural. Or a sterile room into a cosy and inviting space. By adding colour, texture, and visual interest, art changes the way people experience their surroundings. Creating a sense of place, identity, and community.

Studies have shown that exposure to art can improve mental health, reduce stress and anxiety, and increase feelings of well-being. The start of a new year is, of course, the perfect time to make resolutions and set good intentions. This year, one good resolution would be to give your home a facelift by bringing beautiful art into it. Studies have shown that having art in your home can bring feelings of well-being and mental health benefits. So making your room or workspace a haven of comfort or inspiration by hanging the right kind of art for you, is a really good plan.

I have the following eight suggestions help you begin adding art into your home, or office, in 2023.

1. Invest in high-quality art

If you’re serious about bringing art into your home, then investing in quality pieces should be one of your resolutions for 2023. That doesn’t mean you have to break the bank. But while there are plenty of low-budget, low-quality, mass-produced options available to pop in your trolley in retail stores, it does pay to spend a bit more money on higher quality art that has been created with love, care, technique and attention using quality materials. Not only will good quality art stand the test of time, way beyond than those cheaper alternatives, it looks and feels so much better hanging on your walls.

2. Introduce fine art prints

If buying original artwork isn’t currently an option, then quality fine art prints are a great alternative! These could be a reproduction print of your favourite artwork by an artist. Or perhaps a print from an original digital artwork. Prints come in various formats and sizes so you can easily find something that fits both your budget and aesthetic preferences perfectly! Ensure the art is printed on quality, archival, acid-free paper with pigment inks to ensure that the prints will last a lifetime. Fine art prints may be sold framed but are often unframed so that the buyer can frame to their taste. This offers even more versatility when decorating walls with artwork this year!

3. Shop locally for art

Local artists often get overlooked, but there are many talented gems out there creating beautiful works of art. So make it one of your New Year goals to seek out artists working in your area, and support them by purchasing their artwork directly from them. Local arts trails and open studios are a fantastic way to discover amazing artists in your area.

4. Embrace bold colours in your chosen art

For some, the thought of putting boldly coloured artwork up on the walls can be daunting – but it doesn’t have to be! The artwork you hang on your walls doesn’t have to blend into your interior colour scheme unless you want it to. If you want your art to stand out then let it.

Strong, rich colours can add dimension, personality and a focal point to a space and help create a unique style statement for your home. With this resolution for 2023, try exploring art in different styles and colours and see what appeals to you and creates that spark of connection.

5. Display collections of art

Collecting artwork doesn’t have to stop at just one or two pieces. And hanging art isn’t confined to single paintings or matching sets either. You can build entire collections around themes and styles that interest you, such as colour, or photography, or figurative paintings. Explore creating a gallery wall.

If this is something that interests you why not make collecting artwork part of your New Year resolution list? You never know when you will spot the perfect piece to add to your collection.

6. Create an eclectic mix of artwork on your walls

Or you can inject eye-catching personality into a room with an eclectic mix of artwork that reflects your personal style and tastes. Whether it’s hanging a combination of vintage finds, modern art and framed personal mementos, or something else entirely, don’t be afraid to experiment with different types of art until you find something that speaks to you personally and brings warmth and character into your home environment. And you will have great fun creating your collection.

7. Hang Artwork That Inspires You

Find artwork that speaks to you on an emotional level and hang it in prominent places in your home where it can be seen and enjoyed every day. Choose art that you feel a strong connection or positive reaction to. Pieces that will always catch your eye.

If you have spent time getting to know the artist and the story behind the artwork, this can add an extra dimension to your enjoyment of the art you purchase. 8 Take risks with your choice of art

When it comes to choosing art for your walls, don’t be afraid to take risks. Because sometimes going with gut instinct yields the best results! It doesn’t matter if the colour doesn’t match the sofa. Or if it’s not something that you would have expected to like. Let yourself explore what excites you most when selecting pieces for displaying around your home. This could lead you to discover new favourites that will bring you a lifetime of pleasure!

Art has been proven time and time again as being beneficial for our mental health and well-being. So I hope these 8 things to think about will inspire you to add layers of joy and expression into your home through art.

To feel motivated, happy and inspired by the art hanging in the rooms you inhabit daily. What could possibly be better than that? :)

Work life for many artists has drastically changed. Galleries are closed, exhibitions are cancelled and face-to-face workshops and studio visits are no longer an option. Nor are home consultations. This throws existing plans off-course and is a challenging time. And yet, as artists, we are creative. And many are taking this an opportunity to try new things or do things in new ways. Ultimately this will strengthen us.

As far as I am concerned, I am working hard on developing and building a new aspect to my art business. So I am busy creating, exploring, experimenting and always learning.

One thing I had been hesitating to do was actively promote my art to sell it. Wondering whether it would be inappropriate when many people are experiencing difficult times. Would people want to buy art during a crisis? 

Well, it turns out that they do. Thankfully. Especially now that they are spending so much time looking at the walls in their homes.

Plus, I still have to earn a living and pay my bills.

There are some exciting initiatives taking place during the Coronavirus lockdown. Through many industries, channels and walks of life. 

For artists, one such initiative is the Artist Support Pledge #artistsupportpledge. Founded by artist Matthew Burrows. Each participating artist offers art for sale up to £200. When each artist's own sales reach a total of £1,000, that artist pledges to pass the support forward by purchasing a piece of art (up to £200) from another artist. Art lovers and collectors can use the hashtag on Instagram to see what art is available.

I have been amazed by the number of fantastic and fun activities that are being made available for free during this worrying time of COVID-19 and lockdown.

Of course it would be lovely to do everything. But I am trying to stay disciplined and keep working on my art business, painting and designing, so I've had to pick and choose what extra things I do with my time.

A couple of days ago I sent out an email update to my lovely subscribers to find out how they are. And to share some good ways I know and use to keep in touch with family and friends while we are all confined to our homes.

I had such a lovely response from people that I thought it would be good to share that information here too.

One thing this whole Corona Virus situation has made me take stock of is just how crucial family and friends are. It's more important than ever to keep those connections strong through this awful time. I am also taking the opportunity to reconnect with people that I've been out of touch with simply because our busy lives kept getting in the way.

Regular coffee meetups with friends have turned into 4-way WhatsApp video calls. Older family members who never used to WhatsApp or Facetime before are now using such apps all the time.  

I do know from conversations with some of my friends and family, however, that not everyone is familiar with some of the ways you can connect online or on your devices. So I want to quickly share a few of the key ones that I use, that you could try too.

This list of tips is written from my perspective as a professional artist who regularly shows her work at large art fairs. While I’m talking more about art fairs showing independent artists selling direct (for example Contemporary Art Fairs (Windsor, Surrey, Newbury)), rather than gallery-led shows (such as the Affordable Art Fairs), a lot of these artful tips would apply to either.

With years of experience at showing and selling my work direct to art buyers and collectors at such events, I have met a lot of art fair visitors. And, of course, I'm often on the other side of the fence as an art fair visitor (I have to get my art-fix too!).

Art Fairs may seem intimidating if you haven’t been to one before. You may be concerned that you don’t know enough about art to visit one, or that the art will be ridiculously expensive. Also, due to their scale, and the quantity of artists and work on display, art fairs can sometimes seem overwhelming.

Please stop worrying right now. Art fairs offer an accessible world of creativity and visual magic! They are friendly and relaxed, and offer high quality art to suit most tastes and budgets.

Art fairs don’t need to seem intimidating or be overwhelming if you just follow my few simple tips. 

Firstly, imagine an art fair as simply a fabulous room where lots of amazing art is being brought direct to you, in one easy place for your perusal, enjoyment and selection.  

Then:

1. Plan your visit to the art fair in advance

Choose a day to visit when you will have plenty of time to spare. There will be a lot of art to see and you don’t want to feel rushed. Don’t miss seeing something special because you’re in a hurry.

2. Make good use of the fair guide/catalogue

Check if the art fair organisers have made their catalogue available online prior to the fair. If they have, this will give you an opportunity to look at the fair layout in advance and to note where any artists of particular interest to you are located. There are often links on the organiser's website to each exhibiting artist’s own website. So you can check them out beforehand.

Using the map provided, choose the path you’re going to follow through the art fair and stick to it. Otherwise, it’s easy to lose track and be distracted by eye-catching art in the next aisle or by a friend trying to pull you in another direction. Or even to forget which rows of stands you’ve already seen or which direction you were going in.

3. Keep an open mind for discovery

Don’t just stick to artists you already know. Who knows what you may discover on your journey round the fair? You may find work you like in a genre you haven’t considered before.

4. See what catches your eye

You won’t be able to look at every painting on every stand since there will be simply too much art for your eyes and brain to take in at once. We all have limited energy and attention spans, even when we’re specifically looking for something to purchase.

It’s a good idea to briefly scan each art stand as you pass. If you don’t like or feel inspired by what you see, don’t stop. Keep moving until work catches your eye and you feel interest or a connection.

5. Talk to the artists

Don’t be shy about talking to the artists that interest you, and asking questions. The artists have invested a lot into being at the fair and will have brought some of their newest and best art to show you. So they will be more than happy to talk to you about it.

You won’t be pressured into buying anything, but you will be given information about the art and what inspired it. And you can ask for help with choosing the right piece if you would like that.

If you’re not planning on buying, or will need more time to make a decision, just be honest with the artist so they know where they stand.

6. Make notes

In the catalogue, mark off the rows or stands you have visited. But more importantly, use the guide to mark which stands and artists you are interested in. Or take a small notebook or use your phone to write down artist names and stand numbers. Jot down the names of any art pieces you are interested in. It can also be useful to note dimensions and prices if these are of importance in your final decisions.

These notes will help you build a shortlist of artists and works that you want to consider. Then you can go for a coffee to remind yourself of what you have seen and decide what you want to go back for a second look at.

7. Go round again

The second (and maybe even third) time you go round, you will be much more focused. You will be using your shortlist to take another look at all the work you made note of. 

8. Comfortable shoes are a must

You will be doing a lot of walking so dress for comfort. Comfy shoes and light layers. Serious collectors are often the ones in trainers! They know!

Don’t forget to take time to re-hydrate and eat. Sometimes you just need to sit down and take a break. Then you’ll be refreshed for another round of art.

9. Remember to bring your dimensions

If you are looking for art for a particular wall, then it’s important that you know the dimensions of the space. Measure in advance and take the information with you. It can be disappointing for both you and the artist if you see a piece you love, but are not then sure whether it will fit.

Having photos of the room on your phone or tablet can also be helpful to any discussion or decision making.

10. Off the wall or bespoke?

If you love the style of work of a particular artist, but don’t see quite the right piece in the selection the artist has with them on their stand, then ask what else they have available at the show. Most artists will have a few extra pieces in reserve in storage, for when work sells during the show. They will be happy to show you.

Ask if they have similar pieces in specific colours or dimensions if that is what you are looking for.

If you want a piece of art that is tailored to your particular requirements, don’t be afraid to ask the artist if they take commissions. Many artists will be happy to create a piece to your required dimensions, colours, etc.

11. Art fair etiquette

There aren't any stuffy rules or pompousness at most art fairs, really just a couple of common courtesies to be aware of.

Always ask permission from each individual artist before taking photos of their work or stand. Some artists don’t mind photographs being taken, but many do mind, for a number of reasons. 

Touching the art is generally not permitted or welcomed, particularly on paintings (think sweaty or dirty finger marks, nail scratches, etc.). So, just as you would in a museum or art gallery, restrain your fingers. Or ask the artist for permission first, if the temptation to touch gets too overwhelming.  

12. Stay in touch with your favourite artists

We are often wary of giving our email addresses to others, but it is very unlikely that an artist will overload your inbox. What they will often give you, however, is an intriguing insight into their studio life and techniques, advance notification of exciting new work (you'll often get first dibs), free tickets to new art exhibitions, etc.  
Just think, from time to time you will receive emails with amazing visual content that you will actually be delighted to see and enjoy.

I hope that you find useful these simple things to think about when visiting an art fair.

If you already follow my art then you know that I absolutely love, love, love colour. Vibrant, bold colour is a key part of my paintings. It's funny really, I express all that love of colour through my work, yet the clothes I wear are far more muted and neutral. Hmmm! 

When it comes to home decor and interiors, I also find the use of colour exciting and expressive. I know that many of my art buyers and commission clients worry about colour in their homes, which colours go together, whether the art will fit in with the room scheme. It's worth pointing out, of course, that art doesn't ever have to fit with a room colour scheme. If you fall in love with the art, get it. But if you like coordinating colours then go with it. Choosing what you like is one of life's pleasures.

Anyway, I've decided to write some blog posts on colour scheme ideas for your home decoration. I may also include a little bit about the meaning or history of the selected colours. And, of course, I will also suggest one or two of my paintings that feature those colours, and/or would fit in with the decor scheme. It would be silly not to. 😂

So, first up, I would like to discuss pairing opulent jewel tone amethyst purple and with muted green. With added touches of deep purple and turquoise greens. Or analogously teaming them with blue. 

Historically, rich purple hues were only for royalty and aristocracy, due to the cost and difficulty of producing purple pigments. Once the colour became accessible to all in the 1800s, however, it began to be used for fashion and style. After World War I, it even became a symbol of freedom. An expression of extravagance in the 1920s in the face of so much hardship and grief. Nowadays, we use it freely in fashion, decor, marketing, branding, etc.

Purple sits in between warm red and cool blue on the colour wheel, so depending on the specific hue of purple it can equally be either warm or cool. This means that different shades of purple can achieve different effects and feelings.

Darker, vibrant purples give a feel of opulence, drama and luxury. Perfect for bringing sophistication and glamour to your room. Use amethyst purple with muted green to create a dramatic dining room or an indulgent bedroom or even bathroom. Ensure that you have plenty of natural light or use good lighting effectively to lift the colours. Think deep purple furnishings and bright, bold turquoise accessories to bring the scheme together.

If you love these hues of purple and green, but don't wish to be so bold in your decor, then try using them as accent colours in furnishings instead. Sitting next to blue on the colour wheel, they become a trio of colours that work incredibly well together. Look how cool and calming they are in this bedroom with neutral decor.

Or how about a green and purple kitchen?

Purple is one of my favourite colours, and while green is not, the two work incredibly well together. Especially when I add some turquoise and teal with some blue and pink, such as with this triptych painting on canvas, 'Living Life'.

So recently I've been having fun working more often with purple, green and teal. For example, on this is a new abstract painting on clear plexiglass.

Or the deep purple and green of this abstract landscape painting with dramatic accents of turquoise.

How exciting! A brand new art fair will be arriving in West Berkshire in May 2019. The inaugural Contemporary Art Fairs Newbury. There is sure to be buzz around this new fair which will be showing 160 of the very best Berkshire and UK artists.

Some of you may be familiar with the well-established sister show which takes place each year in Windsor. And this new fair replaces the former Reading Art Fair by the same organisers, Windsor Events.

So while eating my breakfast this morning, with BBC Breakfast on in the background on the TV, I began contemplating what such a day means in my own subset of the world. Actually, when I get together with my girlfriends, I feel like I regularly enjoy a celebration of international women. My female circles of friends (and male friends and family too, in fact) include a wide variety of nationalities from many corners of the globe. We laugh, share, learn, congratulate, support and help each other. That mix of nationalities, cultures and experiences enables us all to widen our perspectives. I also recognise and appreciate what women through time have fought for and achieved.

And then I heard something on the TV that made my mouth drop open in shock! The campaign theme for IWD 2019 is 'Balance is better'! Great tagline! Unfortunately, some of what I heard this morning on BBC Breakfast was not at all balanced and in fact just plain ridiculous and detrimental to women! A guest, a female Labour MP, supposedly quoting another high-ranking labour MP, stated that ideally all male labour party members should sit out the next party leadership vote so that a woman can be elected for the first time! OMG! Women should, can and will win on merit and not because men are deliberately excluded. What I heard from that woman, a potential representative of our country [sigh], is not "thinking equal" and is certainly not the way to bring about change, or the right kind of change anyway. Comments like that do not help advance women's rights or alter mens' attitudes. And paying lip service to gender equality by ticking off a checklist quota of women in certain jobs and industries regardless of merit or experience, simply frustrates me.

Balance and equality are about women and men working together and respecting each other. So, again looking at my own world, today I also express gratitude for the man in my life, my partner in all things. I am a strong, skilled woman, and I am probably capable of doing most of it all on my own if I had to! But where would the fun be in that? I need the balance he brings to our relationship. He supports me and empowers me everyday, and I also do the same for him. A combination of different skills and strengths. Together we are a team of equals.

There are many men who already have the right attitude towards gender equality, and who value and respect women and they are crucial to building a gender-equal world. I think that it is important that some of the public voices and representatives of IWD remember and recognise this. After all, the key word is "balance"!

This will be my first time exhibiting my original abstract paintings and landscape art at Contemporary Art Fairs Surrey at Sandown Park Racecourse in Esher, Surrey, from 15 - 17 March 2019. Although I am a veteran exhibitor at the sister shows in Windsor and Reading.

The inaugural Surrey Fair last year was a great success, so I am very excited to exhibit there. And I would like you to come and join me in the experience.

The Private View will take place on the evening of Friday 20 April from 18:30 - 21:30. This is an invitation-only evening where you have the chance to view and buy art, while enjoying a complimentary glass of wine, before the show opens to the general public.

Then, all of a sudden, I found myself grinning with delight! Ultra Violet! Oh yes!

A shade of purple! My favourite colour! 2018 and Pantone are giving me carte blanche to express myself in Ultra Violet! 

Not that I need much excuse to use violet, or any purple for that matter, in my art, as these few examples demonstrate!
