Goodbye Scottish Pound?

It has been rumored that if Scotland is indeed to leave the United Kingdom all Scottish banknotes are to be banned. Coming from a collectors point of view this brings up to main points: First, if they ban the existing Scottish banknotes from circulating we are going to miss out on new banknotes from the Royal Bank, Clydesdale Bank and the Bank of Scotland. Secondly, on the other hand that means new universal banknotes being printed and used throughout the Highlands. This brings up an interesting debate, from a collectors point of view: would you rather lose banknotes from 3 banks and gain banknotes from one universal bank? or just keep things how they are as of right now.

Costa Rica Banknote Update

The first couple images of the "actual" 5,000 and 10,000 Colones notes has been spotted by a JWB reader (Enrique R.) over on a Costa Rican television station named: Telenoticias 7. These banknotes look even more amazing then what the artistic mock ups looked like. Also it was announced that these banknotes will be released mid-2012.

New Banknotes: Iraq

The Central Bank of Iraq has decided that three new banknotes will be issued after the Central Bank deleted some zeroes from their banknotes. The new banknotes will consist of the following denominations: 50, 100 and 200 Dinars. There will also be a 1 Dinar and 2 Dinar coins minted. Images are requested.

New Banknote: Thailand

Starting Jan. 18th of this year the Bank of Thailand will be releasing a new series of banknotes commemorating the great leaders the country has had. The series will begin with a 50 Baht banknote that features King Naresuan the Great. There is rumored to be 16 of these banknotes in the new series.

If anyone can obtain one of these for Jays World Banknotes it would be greatly appreciated. Please conact us if this is note is obtainable.

New Banknote: Oman

The Central Bank of Oman will introduce a new 50 Rial banknote on January 10, 2012. The new banknote will have upgrade security devices.

The security features on this new note are as follows: "The security features on the front of the note represent in intaglio portrait of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, twin step window, holographic element (Main Entrance of the Central Bank of Oman), tactile feature for the blind, colour - shift / colour fix magnetic windowed security thread, micro lettering, three dimensional mould - made watermark portrait, perfect see through register, electrotype water mark and spark OVMI feature."

Serbian Banknote Updates

On December 30th the Bank of Serbia issued the new 500 / 1,000 / 2,000 Dinar banknotes to the public. The new notes have the new Coat of Arms. Any additional information and images are requested. The Central Bank of Bangladesh will be releasing a 40 Taka banknote to commemorate the 40th Year Anniversary since the countries victory in the War of Liberation. My first instinct is to believe this banknote is intended for collectors only, anyone with additional information on this banknote please contact us.

Iceland: According to the Sedlabanki Islands, Iceland will no longer be producing its 2,000 Kronur banknotes.

Indonesia: The government has approved a proposal to re-denominate the Rupiah.

Thai Banknotes and the King

In a great article that was featured on "The Nation" entitled: "The Royal Presence" outlines how the King of Thailand has been continuously featured on Thai banknotes since 1934. According to the article there is an exhibit set up at the Bank of Thailand that is entitled: "Patra Maharaj Thai Banknotes" which is on display just before the birthday of the King. (Which a new note is due to come out soon). There are four small exhibits inside of the large exhibit that showcase from the King's efforts to improve the life of the Thai people to the original engravings of the banknotes. This would be a great exhibit to visit for any collectors or tourists.

Ever since we started Jays World Banknotes we knew that advertising was just not an option. Just as collecting is an independent hobby so did we want JWB to be. EAC Currency: Update

Its is believed that the East Africa Community (Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda) are planning on releasing their new common currency by 2012. Think of this as the EU of Africa. This is both exciting and not so pleasant news for collectors as we will be gaining new banknotes but losing out on many more.

What are your thoughts and opinions on this move by the EAC?

Today (December 1, 2011) the South-East Asian country of Laos has released a new 2,000 Kip (USD: $0.25) banknote. This banknote was made for to commemorate the 36th Anniversary of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and the birthday of President Kaysone Phomvihane.

Religious Heroes on Banknotes Pt. 7

Dámaso Antonio Larrañaga:

Dámaso Antonio Larrañaga was a noticeable priest, political writer and naturalist. Larrañaga began his education at the Convento de San Bernardino and later continued at the School of San Carlos of Buenos Aires from 1789 to 1792. He was finally ordained as a priest and returned to Montevideo in 1799. Due to his ideas he was pursued and expelled from Montevideo in 1811. He fled to Buenos Aires, where he continued his works in natural sciences.

In 1815 Larrañaga returned to Montevideo, where he took advantage of the opportunity to introduce trees like the White Acacia and the Mimosa. A year later, he founded the Public Library in Uruguay. The library was opened from donations for his own books.
In 1830, he was elected as a Senator for the Republic of Uruguay and served until 1835. During his term, he helped pass laws restricting the death penalty and the emancipation of slaves. Upon completing his term, he dedicated his time to write. Gradually he began to lose his vision until becoming almost completely blind. In 1837, he was named co-founder of the Museum of Natural History of Uruguay. He was also appointed Vice President of the University of the Republic, but was unable to complete this post due to his death a year before the opening of the university. Dámaso Antonio Larrañaga passed away in his home in Montevideo on February 16, 1848 from a stroke.

Argentina: A 500 Peso banknote has been proposed to the Argentina government that would feature former President Néstor Kirchner.

Romania: It is believed that a 130 Leu banknote has been made to commemorate the 130th anniversary of the National Bank of Romania.

United Arab Emirates: It has been reported that the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates will be releasing a 500 Dirham banknote in future. The new banknotes will be hybrid banknotes included new security features that have not been featured on UAE banknotes before.

Hong Kong: The new 20, 50 and 100 Dollar banknotes were to be released on November 22nd.

India: 1,000 Rupee banknotes featuring the new Rupee symbol are due to be released in the near future.

Iraq: Rumors of the 50,000 Dinars banknote is said to be false.

Sudan: Sudan is reported to be releasing a new 2 Pound banknote by the end of November-beginning of December.

Thailand: On Decemeber 2nd the Bank of Thailand will release a commemorative 100 Bhat banknote in honor of the king's 81st birthday.
