A quirky Gem with great singing!
This CD features the following vocalists: Jimmy Scott, Jeff Buckley, John Kelly, Deborah Harry, D. K. Dyson, Bernard Fowler, Mavis Staples, Bob Dorough, Jenni Muldaur & Freedy Johnston. For me, the Jimmy Scott track is definitely the stand-out, but then I'm a major Jimmy Scott fan in whatever musical setting he's in. There are many interesting and beautiful tracks here. The jazz is quirky, but to my ear continually interesting. This is an album that grows on you like an eccentric friend.

Another excellent Definitive title. Some crackles and noise on some tracks, but hey, it was recorded in 1949. Some cool vocals by Babs Gonzales on several tracks. This is Jazz at its best, a must buy for true lovers of Jazz!

Duke Ellington "Masterpieces by Ellington" Album Review

Summation of an era, looking forward
When Ellington went into the studio in 1951 to record the longer tracks on this disc, his orchestra was a bridge between its late-1940's configuration (the 5-man trumpet section) and its mid-1950's personnel. The sax section had settled into the form it would have for most of the ensuing two decades (old-timers Hodges and Carney and newcomers Procope, Hamilton and Gonsalves); the trombone section had long-timer Lawrence Brown as well as newcomer Quentin Jackson; and drummer Sonny Greer, who had anchored the rhythm section since the beginning, would retire shortly after these recordings were made. Ellington's orchestra from 1953 on would be a great, swinging and sensitive one, but it would not make the same lush sound that this one did.

The arrangements and orchestrations all bear the hallmarks of Ellington's collaboration with Billy Strayhorn in the late 1940's: they are lush, symphonic, impressionistic, and densely (and adventurously) harmonic. "Mood Indigo", in particular, is a 15-minute tone-poem with shifting colors and key relationships as Ellington and Strayhorn bring the melody through a wide variety of guises, from Jackson's wah-wah trombone solo to Shorty Baker's lyrical waltz to orchestral and piano passages which do homage to the influence which Ravel and Stravinsky had on both of them. Great solos abound here and on the other tracks, most notably from Hodges, Brown, Hamilton, Gonsalves, Carney, trumpters Baker and Ray Nance, and (most probably) Billy Strayhorn on piano, especially in "Mood Indigo"

"The Tattooed Bride" is the only new piece from the original "Masterpieces by Ellington" LP, and it is a beauty. The others of the original tracks -- "Sophistocated Lady" and "Solitude" -- are not laid out as inventively in their harmonics or structure. Of the group, "Solitude" is perhaps the weakest, but this is a relative term.

Ellington would go on to pen many more extended, symphonic works, but none would have quite the multicolored, impressionistic tone-pallate that these do. And Strayhorn's presence would not be as pronounced in those future works as it is here: the orchestration and harmonies in particular bear his mark. These are masterpieces indeed: great works of art by two of our greatest composers/orchestrators, and played by one of the greatest orchestras in Afro-American music.

Whether you are considering this disc because you like Ellington, or because you've heard great things about him as a composer and arranger, or whether you stumbled upon this by accident -- buy this CD. If you have an appreciation for good music, you will not be disappointed.

John Pizzarelli "Bossa Nova" Album Review

best Americanized Bossa Nova I've heard
I liked John Pizzarelli and bossa nova before I found out about this album, so buying it was a natural choice for me. Brazilian music is some of the most beautiful made in the world, and Pizzarelli respects that tradition while blending it with his unique style. If you're a fan of bossa nova looking for something new, or a jazz listener in need of a mostly lighthearted summery album, pick this up.

Favorite track - Waters of March, a classic Brazilian bossa nova done with a good translation.

gave it a go after a bowl and a few cocktails. the first time i heard this song, john pizzarelli was playing a bossa set. introduced me to a lot of great songs...it was a great set. think ray kennedy was on the keys, his brother on bass, and jobim's grandson(great?) sang on a few songs. after the show i got to meet john, (my stepdad/mentor took me to the show, new his pa or sommit like that), and i commented on the pink polkadotted tie he was wearing. i was in highschool at the time, and i think he thought i was taking the mick. he signed my cd, glad you liked the tie.

Consistent Ben Tankard
If your a Ben Tankard then I think this album would rate as a 5 star as he is consistent in the quality of his music. He has some great tunes on here and I love Shirley Murdoch's version of he Commodore's Jesus is Love. The version of Ain't No Stopping Us Now to me lacks something that I can only describe as "drive". The tune is good but just doesn't have the urgency that says "ain't no stopping us now". Still it's quite a good version and that is just a personal opinion.

It is a very laid back album (as are all of Ben's albums) but this for me is one of the best he's done.

Dave Liebman "Conversation" Album Review

Easily his best
Dave Liebman, Coltrane-influenced jazz tenor and soprano saxophonist, has had a creditable, if seldom spectacular, career. I've enjoyed many of his previous outings both as leader and sideman, but none more than this. Here, he has completely come into his own voice, a vibrant and declamatory sound on both his instruments.The core of this band (Liebman; Vic Juris, g; Tony Morino, acoustic, Stik bass) has been together for some years now. The addition of Marko Marcinko, a player not known to me, on drums, seems to have been the catalyst to vault this band from competence to brilliance--once again validating the observation that the best jazz these days is being made by bands, not thrown-together aggregations of stars. There's an entirely welcome new-found openness and confidence in this band, almost swagger, that's been missing from previous outings.There's also a very attractive programmatic thing happening here that sets this disc apart from your average jazz outing. Take "Tickle Bath," for example. It starts with Liebman's solo sax sounding remarkably like his young daughter probably sounded when he tickled her in the bath. "Anubis," the longest and most ambitious cut, with it's very cool Middle Eastern soprano sax/oud-like guitar vibe, coupled with smart drum/percussion voicings--certainly his most expansive and successful song to date. It's not that Liebman hasn't used this approach before, e.g., on Water, but it's never been anywhere near as effective as it is here. A good deal of the success of this disc belongs to Vic Juris. Featuring an astonishingly wide palette of sounds from acoustic (his preferred and most distinctive voice here) and electric guitar, he always seems to find the exact right timbre and sonic signature to perfectly complement the leader's adventurous writing and playing. It's weird, but sometimes it just takes a long time for the full complement of beauty and gravitas to find proper expression in seasoned jazz artists. Who knows why it happens, but we saw something similar happen with Terence Blanchard's Bounce and Randy Brecker's Wide Angles released earlier in 2003. I'm here to say, however, that what's going on here is even more remarkable and satisfying that the brilliant discs those artists released earlier this year.Right drummer, Haronic Convergence, their turn--I don't know what, nor do I care. I'm just happy to bask in the sonic glory of this transcendent music, some of the very best in what will certainly go down as an incredibly rich year of acoustic improvised music.

If you can dig this...
Already was onto Astor Piazzolla, yet all day tango tires me out... Richard Galliano's "French Touch" is fine jazz accordion but have been hit and miss with his other recordings. Have always enjoyed old and new gypsy (django, Bireli Lagrene, romane) and recently musette, old and new. Perchance picked up Canzone Della Strada and it grew on me, more and more and then heavy rotation and now one of my favorite cd's. Have since collected all of their cd's and these cats can really blow! Their theme concepts work fine. CinéPassion is movie themes and Buongiorno Tristezza (neither available in US, bought directly from QN) really showcases the jazz chops these guys can bring. Andreas Hinterseher has a touch on the accordion that places him at the top. Any of these guys can hold their own in any "cutting contest" this side of New Orleans. This may not be for everybody, but I'll never tire of this music. Looking forward to many more years of good music from these players!

Astounding. Period
This recording is Astounding. I have listened over and over (now on my 5th or 6th listen), and my awe grows each time. This is an instant classic, and belongs in every serious music collection.

This rates in the top 5 greatest jazz recordings of all time, right up there at the top with "Kind of Blue." It is genius.

I'm still shaking my head that it went undiscovered and unheard for almost 50 years. What a sonic treasure! Astounding.

Gary Burton "Generations" Album Review

Feelgood story but little to listen to.
I'm a huge GB fan and he can do virtually no wrong by me. Anyone who is familiar with his career knows of his longstanding place in higher music education and his keen sense for discovering new talent. So I won't expound on that.

But to be perfectly honest, if you were to do a blind "taste test" of this album - not knowing that it was Burton playing vibes, Ozone playing keys, and a teenager not old enough to drive playing guitar - you would probably come away with little reason to listen again. There are a few notable compositions by the likes of Metheny, Mitch Foreman, and Oscar Peterson, but the arrangements are somewhat uninspired, at least by the GB standards I'm used to. Lage, the young guitar prodigy, contributes three originals and although any composition by someone so young worthy of being recited by GB is remarkable, they leave me wondering how young Pat Metheny was when he wrote Unity Village or Bright Size Life.

I know it's not fair to compare young Lage to an iconic Metheny, but for me music is all about enjoying what I'm listening to, not feelgood sub-plots or story lines. I must admit that it is somewhat fascinating to listen to a young teenager play an otherwise excellent jazz guitar along side GB, but take away that knowledge and the music left to stand by itself becomes somewhat underwhelming.

This CD is worth owning purely for the posterity value of what one day may become the next Jim Hall, but if you just want to hear great jazz music by GB, the honest truth is you'd be more satisfied with something like Face To Face or Like Minds, etc.

This CD still gets a positive rating of 3 stars because GB can do no wrong. I just won't be listening to it as much as I will his other releases.

I heard a cut from this album on public radio and immediately purchased it. The album is tremendous. Pilc is creative, musical and masterful. A variety of songs is offered and they are all different, interesting, challenging and wonderful. I am now shopping for more Pilc recordings, which also seem to have rave reviews by Amazon listeners.

The Quintet "Jazz at Massey Hall" Album Review

Such Limitless Potential...
This concert has the makings of something quite magical. Five of the best bebop musicians ever taking to the same stage. Unfortunately, it doesn't live up to it's potential. Apparently Bird, Diz, and Powell were all drunk...with Bird being the worst offender. And Diz kept leaving the stage to go watch a big heavyweight boxing match that was being broadcast. Bird also forgot to bring his sax so he was playing a cheap alto borrowed from a local music store. Bud was on leave from a mental institution and required supervision, so he wasn't exactly at his best to start with. Moreover, Bird and Diz left the stage for more than half the concert leving just a trio performing. Max was impeccables that night, however, playing an amazing set with some powerful solos. Mingus was tight as well, at least as much as could be heard. The sound recording is ok on 3 or 4 tunes and dreadful on the rest.

This recording is sad because it had so much potential. If it was recorded properly and the musicians in shape and wanting to perform at their best this could have been one for the ages. As it is, you get some decent bebop from three drunk guys (one of them being a mental patient), and a fantastic rhythm section recorded by an amateur through a third rate PA system at Massey Hall. So this recording is nice but hardly magical.

Good, but could've been better...
Where to start? Well, it's a good collection no doubt about it, with some of the early RCA/Bluebird classics and choice cuts from the radio broadcasts. Also, the first two discs are what make this set (Volume 1- 4) really worth getting. Because, even if you already own the RCA Complete Recordings (13 disc set), these recordings of Millers work from the 1920's up to his signing with RCA/Victor are really worth hearing and having. So if you were to buy just one of these Avid volumes, this is the one. Though, one great song "A Blues Serenade" from 1935 was missing. That's a shame. But here's the one big problem with all these Avid sets for Glenn Miller, the sound quality is heavy on the noise reduction. Some may like it, but I did not. That's what's keeping me from giving this collection the 4 to 5 star range. Where as the RCA collection (5 stars) breathes much better, and has all the sparkle and fire that is missing from these Avid collections. So, if you're not afraid of a little surface noise, go for the RCA collection. Finally, the Avid booklet is alright, but not great. For example, the pictures are rather small and the story wasn't in depth. Where as, the RCA booklet was much better on both counts. So once again, if you just want to sample one of these Avid sets, this is the one. It's worth the price for the rare jewels on disc one and two.

Tenth Anniversary
Ten years ago a younger David Benoit and Russ Freeman did the 'Benoit/Freenan Project 1'{1994}. And to this day it is stiil one of my most favourite albums. I had just about given up all hope that these guys would ever do another album together. But as they say 'Good things come to those who wait'. And the good thing is the release of 'Benoit/Freeman 2'{2004}. I brought this album about a year ago and I listen to it all the time. With guest recording artist like Vince Gill and Chris Botti. And songs like Palmetto Park,Via Nueve,Samba and Club Havana 'Project 2' is a beautiful album. So what as changed over the last ten years? Well,for one thing Mr Benoit hair is now more grayer and Mr Freeman hair is a lot shorter. But the music is still top notch. And once again Benoit and Freeman demonstrate their ability to compose good music apart and together. So just sit back in your easy chair and enjoy this smooth jazz treat. And while you're at it why not give 'Project 1' a listen

On this decidedly low-key set, Charles Lloyd, on tenor throughout, seems suspended between surrender and desire, with lush, melancholy outcomes. Billy Hart has, by this time (The Call came in 1993), joined Lloyd's '90s quartet, and the results are auspicious. His even-keeled handling of the rhythm section, never shy and sometimes rattling, steers Lloyd out of the sleepy waters in which he occasionally risks foundering. Bobo Stenson, as always, displays poise and great taste at the piano, soloing long and gorgeously at the opening of the extended "Song." Anders Jormin's welling, liquid bass, well worth close attention, buoys the music impressively. Quietness, tinged with sadness, unifies the album. Mellowing, late-night listening, ideally not experienced solo. As titles like "The Blessing" reiterate, Lloyd's music is always about something more than just music. --Peter Monaghan

It's just another great Coryell album
Once again I'm Johnny-come-lately. I just got Tricycles three years after its release.I just got Tricycles today and have only listen to it three times but it seems to be as great as Spaces Revisited. As someone inferred, these are masterworks played by masters and as someone else said it as good to play as background as it is to be totally absorbed into it. I also agree that Dragon's Gate is absolutely a blast. There are many versions of this song and this updated one is practically a new level of guitar. All the tracks though are delightful and as someone else said it hangs together as a whole very neatly even though there are various genres involved. Larry is a genius and Egan and Wilcox ably accompany him. Most Highly Recommended.

Odyssey Band is a reprise of a group that first enjoyed popularity in 1983. Back in the day, James "Blood" Ulmer, Charlie Burnham, and Warren Benbow were the harbingers of great black rock. The essence of Odyssey's sound is in the collusion of Ulmer's droning guitar and Burnham's wailing violin. Eschewing a bass player altogether, the two instruments blend with Benbow's drumming into a wholly aggressive sound. While Odyssey is an instrumental ensemble, Ulmer's mush-mouthed vocals do grace a few songs on this disc. Reunion features several long explorations of passionate interplay between three dedicated musicians. A disciple of jazzman Ornette Coleman's harmolodic theory, Ulmer alternates his distinctive guitar between Eastern-style drones and skittering, stinging lead lines to reveal a commitment to gut-bucket blues. --Mitch Myers

One of the great things about Susie Ibarra . . .
. . . is that she doesn't rest on her laurels. Her most recent cd before this one was the highly praised and greatly accomplished Songbird Suite.Folkloriko, her latest, represents a significant departure. Lacking the manifest gorgeousness of several of Songbird Suite's songs ("Azul" and "Passing Clouds"), it seeks to achieve a different effect and response. This is almost jazz "program music," analogous to, perhaps, The Moldau by Smetana. With this ambitious disc, Ibarra seeks to present a sound picture of what a day in the life of a Filipino immigrant worker might look (or, perhaps better, feel) like. Thus, it is seldom conventionally "pretty," although hardly ever is it less than heartfelt and arresting.One thing that immediately stands out is violinist Jennifer Choi's timbre. Often harsh, even almost grating, she approaches the sound signature of both clarinet and piccolo. Not always instantly appealing, her approach, perfectly apposite in context of the thematic material, slowly grows on the listener, finally winning him over. The addition of an entirely sympathetic Wadada Leo Smith on three selections not only broadens the soundscape, it also ups the vigor ante almost off the scale.Containing songs that would seem only marginally related to Filipino immigrant experience (e.g., "Awit Sa Trabaho," sounding suspiciously like an American Indian anthem, and "Ang Sayaw," a mesmerizing waltz), Folkloriko nevertheless scores big. Perhaps these songs have an intimate connection to Filipino music, perhaps not; in any case, they nevertheless wonderfully conjure immigrant sensibilities. With "Palengke" things begin to go in a noticeably "out" direction. Fine by me. This and the three subsequent songs represent some of the more daring sound configurations one might encounter in modern jazz, esp. the violin-trumpet duet featured on "Palengke," a virtuoso-yet-totally-approachable number, if ever there was one.A word about Craig Taborn, who seems to be popping up almost everywhere. Relegated to a supporting role throughout much of this disc, when he finally gets a chance to shine (on "Paniniwala"), he makes the most of it, displaying not only monster technique, but an entirely engaging neo-romantic modernist approach to this solo piece.The deeper one ventures into this entirely remarkable music, the greater the rewards. Surprising instrumental conceptions blend with equally unexpected timbres to produce a unique sound signature, which, despite its alienness, eventually wins the listener over by virtue of its sonic splendor.A note on the cover art, which features a riveting image of two obviously WASP young women casually though artfully perched on the hood of what looks like a late forties Chrysler in front of a California Central Valley orange grove. Somehow this image, seemingly 180 degrees opposite of Filipino immigrant labor concerns, magically captures the vibe of what's happening here, if only by odd juxtaposition. All in all, this is simply a spectacular disc, rocketing the already meteoric career of Susie Ibarra even higher into the stratosphere.

Swingin' and Fun
Swingin' and fun--this is probably Satchmo's finest hour. In the presence of the (elderly and blind) Father of the Blues, the trumpet master exemplifies both the deep feeling and the joy of these magical tunes. Check out "Aunt Hagar's Blues" and especially both versions of "Long Gone"! But make sure you get THIS version, cause the older CD has bastardized renditions replacing some of the original 50's masters, which had been lost. Columbia did a great job in reconstructing the original sound this time, while adding some real nice bonus material from the sessions, which capture the spirit of the day. Very highly recommended for all jazz fans or anyone who loves great music! I seldom give 5 stars-this deserves at least 6!

They Deserve Five Stars
Proving that great music still exists, SOS offer this little gem to those of us who have the ear to discern quality musicianship.

One of my favourite SOS Instrumentals from their latest Album. I am NEVER disappointed when I hear a Swing Out Sister album, whether I'm hearing it for the first time or the umpteenth. "Where Our Love Grows" is no exception. Each song is melodic in it's own way, drawing from the themes of a few of their previous albums. Most notably represented are the melancholy and edge of "Filth And Dreams" balanced with the sheer beauty and cinematic soundscapes of "Somewhere Deep In The Night." But pervading all is the cosmopolitan cool late 60's/early 70's sound that SOS provides us with, featuring plenty of nods to the genius of Sergio Mendes, Burt Bacharach, Marvin Gaye, and Ennio Morricone without ever giving up a thing of their own originality and vision. The production and arrangements are top-notch, as with any Swing Out Sister project. (NOTE: I also own the import version of this set, which I received as a gift ... and the U.S. version actually has a fuller sound with richer bass.) And then there's Ms. Corinne Drewery, the lovely lead vocalist and co-songwriter. She sounds better than ever on this recording...and that is saying a lot since her voice is always perfection for their music. It really warms my heart to know that music of this type...lush, late 60's-early 70's pop/jazz...is still being made, both artfully and lovingly. If you also feel this way, then "Where Our Love Grows" is a masterpiece that undoubtedly belongs in your collection

A Great Clooney Christmas
While Rosie's voice was in decline when she recorded this album in 1996, her interpretive ability and singing style were very much intact, as was her impeccable taste in song selection. Thank God she finally recorded a vibrant and dignified Christmas album. Her updated version of "Count Your Blessings" (from the holiday film classic "White Christmas") alone makes this CD worthwhile: Clooney, "Blessings..." and "White Christmas" EMBODY the holiday season. "Sleep Well, Little Children" is a new classic, so beautiful and touchingly rendered by Rosie. And her tongue in cheek duet "Don't Wait Till the Night Before Christmas" with her brother, Nick Clooney", is a folksy and fun tag to end the Christmas celebration. For 25 years, Rosie recorded an album every year for Concord Jazz until her death in 2002. She left behind a legacy that will never be equalled and this CD is the icing on the cake. How she is missed.

Frank Kimbrough "Lullabluebye" Album Review

A very very nice album...
Just a quick reference so you know where I'm coming from: I like Brad Mehldau, Vijay Iyer, Keith Jarrett, Jean-Michele Pilc, Vassilis Tsabroupoulous, Jason Moran, and certainly others. Ok. This latest Frank Kimbrough CD is the first I've heard of his, and I completely love it. There is excellent fresh playing, great ideas, a good variety of tunes, some rather adventurous, (such as Eventualities), some more standard tunes, (such as You Only Live Twice), happier stuff and contemplative stuff. The players all work very well together, and for me these guys are definitely "first tier"; I can't believe this is the first I've heard of Frank. For fans of piano trio, this is a must have. I'm stingy with my stars; this is really five star jazz.

Jim Black "Habyor" Album Review

People will be talking about this music for a long time. Arguments will come and go as to whether this is jazz or rock or some hybrid yet to be labelled.
I don't think that matters.
This music sings with the very joy of creation. A sound that is common to all genres when the artists involved are speaking truly and without thought for markets or labels.
What we have on this CD is four musicians dedicated to the task of realizing the compositions of their leader, Jim Black...and we have a leader with the wisdom and faith in his band to allow them to extrapolate and improvise around, over and through his wonderful musical ideas. They create sound-scapes that are evocative, minimalist, dense, industrial, poetic, humorous and/or just plain beautiful...sometimes within seconds of one another.
Alasnoaxis are, I believe, that rare phenomenon in music...something new. They combine their collective musical experiences and create something immediately accessible and yet at the same time, exotic...foreign. Accessible because there are no barriers to this music other than the preconceptions you might bring to it. Foreign, as there are no four gentlemen at this time putting it down in this particular way...of course. This music has the `shock of the new' but is not self-consciously avant-garde... it seems to exist for the best reason of all...because it must.

I don't hear `Habyor' as better or worse than the two previous releases from Alasnoaxis. I hear a continuity of purpose in the three CDs so far. I wait for further releases impatiently.

Those with ears will listen and hear...those with a need to pigeon-hole might be in trouble.

Jazz fills up my life. It means to me everything
"Jazz fills up my life. It means to me everything -- said Namyslowski. -- Playing in a quartet suits me best... Until recently I did not set great store by composition. But now to be successful one cannot merely play Horace Silver's themes and other people's arrangements. And so I have created my own quartet and my own music, to be able to play what I want and how I want...".

Quoting these words I cannot help recalling a thin and insignificant looking boy who burdened with a huge cello scrambled on to the gigantic stage of the Forest Opera in order to play with the Modern Combo group, which was taking part at the II International Jazz Festival at Sopot (August 1957), as a completely unknown soloist. And yet a few years later Zbyszek Namyslowski won recognition not only with jazz fans and connoisseurs at home but also with the exacting critics abroad -- after numerous tours of his quartet in such countries as Italy, Belgium, West Germany, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Finland, USA.

Namyslowski went through most suitable stages before he achieved his present-day results; he played the trombone in traditional and swing bands, for some time also the trumpet and cornet, and when there was need he accompanied the vocalists on piano. But the ambitious musician was never after the label of a "multi-instrumentalist". Eventually he chose the alto saxophone in which he could prove himself completely. What we appreciate with Namyslowski particularly is his equally enthusiastic attitude to all styles in jazz; he is always himself while playing hard-bop along with rhythm and blues, free-jazz and the third current along with the fringes of pop-music, and who at the same time would feel an irresistible fascination towards new ventures? A separate chapter could be devoted to Namyslowski's compositions, the more so that his ambition is to draw inspiration from Polish folk-lore which leads to the sort of music that Poland exports as her contribution to the world of jazz.

While writing on Namyslowski we must say a few words about the remaining members of the band as they also have their say in modern jazz. The pianist ADAM MATYSZKOWICZ (b. 1940) made his first steps as jazzman within the Cracow "jazz boheme"; in 1963 he made his mark as member of "The Jazz Darlings", and already in those days critics predicted him a fine career which was to lead him subsequently to appearances in the quartet of the known Polish tenore saxophonist Michal Urbaniak. His greatest success abroad was his accompanying to the known Polish group "Novi" which won the first prize at the 15th International Jazz Festival in Zurich (1965). The percussionist CZESLAW BARTKOWSKI also became a jazzman in a student milieu having begun his career in the FAR quartet. In 1961 he made himself known to the wider public at the International Jazz Jamboree at the Warsaw Philharmonic, then he participated in the triumphant tour of Namyslowski's quartet (among others in Britain, Italy, West Germany). From time to time he joins other bands such as the excellent quartet of the Polish pianist Krzysztof Komeda. The bass player JANUSZ KOZLOWSKI (b. 1941) started, like his colleagues, as member of modern student bands. For some time he played with traditional bands such as "Warsaw Stompers", Ragtime Jazz Band, the group Bossa Nova Combo and "Pagart's" big band with whom he went on numerous tours abroad.

Siodmawka (Seven-Four Bars) -- After the composition based on Polish mountaineer's themes called "Piatawka" (Five-Four Bars) in which Namyslowski used rarely appearing in jazz rhythm 5/4, the composer went here still farther and used in "Siodmawka" the beat 714. Along with the free form we hive here harmonies of a mountaineer's tune. This is undoubtedly one of the most interesting items of the record.

Despair -- In respect of melody and harmony, an equally interesting piece. This is a twelve-bar form of blues, but without the use of the blues scale.

Frances the Terror -- Here we come to know the quartet operating within free-jazz, the sort of music which perhaps does not appeal to all, but expresses, however, the artistic changes occurring in our days and the evolution of jazz. The band is improvising in two tempi, two phases, and does it very consistently.

The Beetle Humming in the Reeds -- A folk-tune again, this time it's a Krakowiak. The quartet plays it with dash and half-jokingly.

My Dominique -- A typical ballad of simple harmonies, in slow tempo. The composer wrote it with his little daughter, Dominika, in mind.

The Wardrobe -- The composition, which is being played dynamically and in a "dirty" way, may be regarded as a mixture: free harmony + big beat. Let's hear what's been the result.

Mead Drinker Lola -- A sort of Charleston, a musical joke with typical solo parts. It can do without commentary, being simply a musical relaxation.

"Despite the comings and goings of our many American visitors in 1964, one of the most refreshing things to hit the British jazz scene last year was the visit of these four young Poles. This album... is a striking illustration of the high standard of European jazz. ("Melody Maker", London, Jan. 9th 1965)

As a group, the four men are obviously well accustomed to each other's playing.. One of the best jazz/pop/funk CDs ever recorded!
I'm a 53 year old professional guitarist and have been a Lee Ritenour fan for decades. In my opinion "Portrait" is the best album Lee has ever recorded, and one of my all-time favorites by anybody in the business. The incredible vocals of Eric Tagg and Phil Perry on "Turn the Heat Up" are worth the price of the CD alone, not to mention the suberb digital quality of the recording as a whole. This is much better than any of the "Best of" CDs by Lee. Just listen to the samples.

An awesome song, as usual with Lee Ritenour!This version is like a little test for me, cause it's the 5th time that I record it, & when I've listen, I've remove the others versions!It's not to talk about me, but every guitarist knows that what Lee Ritenour can do ain't easy, & for that song, the problem was to play the melody at the good moment,to be "with" the rhythmic;That's why I've record it 5 times, and I just think that it's just acceptable, I'm not really happy of what I've played!I'm gonna let it till the moment I'll be able to play it better, & for that, there's just 1 solution:working!The more difficult, as Lee Ritenour said himself, is the silences, the moments where you mustn't play any note, without it to sound like an hesitation, & here, when I've done it, it made as if I was hesiting!I repeat:I'll work it more to have a more acceptable version!

Hugh Masekela "Still Grazing" Album Review

Great mix of jazz, pop, African (world) beats
I bought this CD mainly because I knew the hit "Grazing in the Grass". What I discovered was some fascinating music. Masekela could not only play trumpet but had some great singing pipes as well namely on "Child of the Earth". I always disliked the well-known version of "Up, Up and Away" by The Fifth Dimension, but Hugh's instrumental version is just fabulous. I especially love the piano accompaniement on these songs. Yeah, some songs are sung in his native tongue but so what. The music is still great such as on the 2nd track. Some political stuff but so what. Buy and enjoy.

A studio blowing session?!
This is an excellent album. The previous review gave you a complete insight in what you'll find in this recording so I'll not spend my time telling you who's there and who's not. I can add that this album is so well recorded that it almost doesn't seem a live album. It seems a studio blowing session! It seems that the audience had been abducted by aliens! They didn't make a move, a shout, a breath! There's only music here. People? I dont't know! Maybe they went to the bathroom for the entire sets, I don't know! There's alot to shout and to get electrified here, but no one opens his mouth here! Extremely quiet people! Every tune here is really streched out and the solos are outstanding. All the guys played great in these nights. This album does not even seems a Kenny Burrell album because he does not have all that space. It seems almost an all star reunion. Anyway it is true among all the guys the trumpet player, Louis Smith, clean them up! His solos are spectacular fifties trumpet bebop examples! These guys all together was a perfect jazz machine! There's only one little thing that I don't like here. The scottish melodic line at the beginning of "Scottish blues", I don't know what it is (a traditional scottish melody I suppose) but it is futile and completly out of place. But don't worry it is simply a statement at the beginning and at the end of the tune. This album is spec-ta-cu-lar believe me! A friend of mine copied it to me, but I loved it so much that I HAD to own it original, so I bought it. Now it's your turn !! C'mon, let's do IT !

Outstanding!
OK, I'm embarassed to even write a review on this page given the other reviewers effort... I can't even come close to using words like his poetry at times. I did want to write something though because I want to write something about all the products I enjoy as a way of giving back. I bought this disc on the basis of the other reivew and had never heard of Omar Sosa. It's hard though not to be swayed by someone who's a Top 100 reviewer and has obviously listened to thousands of recordings who then says they think it's one of the finest pieces of music put to record!

I'm not sure how to describe it, so I guess I have to use my own words. It's world in flavour (yet very different in many ways from more 'typical' world music), yet very organic and creative, experimental, spontaneous even. Lots of stunningly beautiful piano, drums and percussion. I really, really enjoyed it. It's ambient, mellow, beautiful and at times haunting. I will definately check out his other works.

Highly recommended.

One of the best, by one ot the best
If I had a gun put to my head by some quirky jazz-loving criminal who was intent on forcing me to confess which Herbie Hancock album was the greatest, I'd probably flirt with the idea of naming "maiden voyage" and then admit that this one was where it's at. Why? Because like "maiden voyage" the playing here is both inventive and brilliant, but in addition to those virtues this album features an amazing variety that is nevertheless organic. In other words Hancock shows you all the most daring possible moves on the chessboard without trying to play checkers. It's an approach that rewards repeated listening, and as with the greatest of all jazz albums it allows the audience to come away with something new with each listen. This is one righteous, eternally fresh, piece of jazz-fruit that will never rot.

Sco in a more jazzy setting
Whoever says that the tunes on this CD are... and I quote "atrocious" probably can't play jazz and don't realize how nice this quartet works together. I'll admit that some of the tunes on here were, well, lacking (amsterdam). Dave Hollands playing is quite amazing. He puts the right notes right where they belong. But there is some amazing playing going on here. The last song "oh, I see" highlights all of the players strengths. It's great to hear sco play more strait ahead jazz stuff (not to say that I don't love his other stuff! and not to say that this is exactly "strait ahead"). All of these musicians absolutly tear it up. This is a must for any scofield fan, or any jazz fan for that matter.

STRAIGHT AHEAD HUTCHERSON
If you like your jazz straight ahead and you love vibes, don't listen to the reviewer below. THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL FIVE STAR SESSION. And one of Hutcherson's best recordings. It's been described as somewhat disjointed because Grant Green plays on only the last three tracks, but it lends a little variety to the mix. Most of the tracks are Tenorman Joe Henderson's compositions. Yes, a lot of people rave about DIALOGUE, but it's too avant-garde for my taste. This one has been long out of print and the price is a little steep. I seem to have a hard time finding coherent straight ahead vibes playing like this, so to me it was worth every penny. I hardly ever agree with Cook and Morton of PENGUIN'S GUIDE TO JAZZ, but here's what they had to say about this reissue: "The KICKER wasn't available until 1999, an astonishing oversight on Blue Note's part... it remains a mystery that this record should have been considered so marginal that it lay in the vaults for 30 years."

If you like the straight ahead feel of this recording, of course you'll also want Grant Green's IDLE MOMENTS which includes the same line-up. But, you should also check out Dexter Gordon's GETTIN' AROUND. An underrated album in Dexter's Blue Note catalog as far as I'm concerned. And it showcases some beautiful vibes playing by Hutcherson.

I had been playing bass guitar only for a few years when this CD ( cassette at the time ) came out. I loved it right from the start. As soon as the music started, I was blown away by the slap bass. The first song alone, has influenced my style and outlook as a bass player. Stanley plays his bass solos very melodically. His duet with Jeff Beck on Time Exposure is very catchy.

Some of Zorn's most restrained, sincere work comes in the form of his Masada revisions via a few friends on guitar. Ravi Coltrane "Mad 6" Album Review

A no-decision
This is Ravi Coltrane's third disc as a leader; the good news is that his tenor playing continues to grow in authority, & that he's worked out his own intelligent take on the M-BASE style of smart, off-kilter rhythms (cf. Coleman, Osby &c). & yet I find the album hard to like. Part of the problem is the loud, gut-punching studio sound which makes the hyperkinetic rhythms (especially Steve Hass's busy drumming) lash out at you mercilessly. The other problem is that sometimes the decision to use familiar postbop standards for the majority of tracks seems perverse: I mean, do we really need "Round Midnight" to be mauled virtually to the point of unrecognizability? -- Anyway, Ravi Coltrane himself remains the most likeable presence on the album, & ensures that it remains listenable. Fans of this kind of in-yer-face contemporary jazz will find much to enjoy; others should approach with caution.

My personal favorite AEC
Nice Guys reveals the many dimensions of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, from their crystalline delicacy, through their wry humor, to their unmitigated heaviness ("Dreaming of the Master"). It also reveals their core philosophy of creation, which combines their own eruptive originality and their homage to what they called "Great Black Music."I saw the AEC about 20 times from 1976 through 1983, and I was lucky enough to catch them at an AACM festival shortly after the release of Nice Guys. Never did I see them any better, from Don Moye's astonishing work on drums to their thundering entry into "Dreaming of the Master" near the end of their set.Nice Guys does it all, albeit it a slightly tamer way than those who love the earlier "A Jackson in Your House" AEC. Take the plunge and enjoy your own dreams of these masters.

Incredibly Creative
Ben Allison's Peace Pipe is one of the more ambitious and unbelivably original jazz project's I've ever heard. Allison creates incredible textures and rhythmic patterns by using so many different unusual elements in the music: muted piano, prepared piano, picking bass strings with a subway card, cymbals on the drum heads and of course, the defining aspect of this recording, the traditional Malian kora, a harp made from a gourd. Mamadou Diabate is a stunning musician, but the kora makes a certain thought about this music on this album even more incredible. I had the pleasure of seeing Diabate live once and realized that the kora is actually a diatonic instrument. It can only play in one key at one time. As a result, the writing process of this music must have been extremely difficult in order to make jazz with the harmonic limitations of the kora. The result is music like you've never heard before. The improvisational ablities of the musicians is outstanding as usual. Get ready for a musical treat with Peace Pipe.

This CD contains the original Moodsville LP issue of BLUESY BURRELL, with an additional bonus track from a different date thrown on. Four of the tunes pair Burrell with Coleman Hawkins, to excellent effect. TRES PALABRAS is wonderful; both Hawk and pianist Tommy Flanagan shine here. In fact, as usual, Tommy Flanagan adds immensely to the success of this date. Hawk is in great form. Contrary to the review below, my copy's sound was excellent - no hiss at all. A most enjoyable CD.

Lee Morgan "Cornbread" Album Review

A quintessential hard bop trumpeter
Blue Note recorded a number of hard bop musicians in the 50's and 60's, such as Art Blakey and Horace Silver. Many of these recordings introduce young trumpeters, including Freddie Hubbard and Lee Morgan. In fact, Morgan had been a side man of Blakey's before moving to be a leader on his own.

This is one of Morgan's better efforts. There are several things noteworthy about this album.
1- Morgan is outstanding. His tone is clear and strong. While he doesn't play "pretty" like Art Farmer, he is capable of lyric playing. He has been influenced by Clifford Brown, although his tone isn't quite as warm as Brownie's.
2- This group played great together. The always welcome warm-toned tenor of Hank Mobley is a plus, and Herbie Hancock hadn't yet gotten commercial and he also excels.
3- Morgan is a surprisingly adept composer. Everything on the album is an original except "Ill Wind", and two of Morgan's tunes, the title track and "Ceora" are gems. "Cornbread" is a down-home funky blues, and "Ceora" is a bossa-flavored ballad. Both are excellent.
4- The improvisations are outstanding, but even among such stellar colleagues, Morgan stands out.

In short, Morgan was one of the bright young stars of the trumpet in the 50's and 60's. This is a terrific example just how good he was.

The Ella & Louis hour
The COMPACT JAZZ series reunites Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald with samples from their classic 1956-'57 VERVE sessions. These two scat singers couldn't have been more opposite vocally, and yet the combination worked fabulously. Armstrong with his ruined lip still was an expressive vocalist, while Ella was in her singing prime.

The program is weighted with Gershwin tunes. The reason is some material here was drawn from the twosome's PORGY & BESS LP, while the other Gershwin standards were scattered between the ELLA AND LOUIS and ELLA AND LOUIS AGAIN albums. This is a fine early-stereophonic collection of standards performed by two of 20th Century's best. Highly recommended.

Worth far more than six, or 30, pieces of silver--no betrayal of the listener.
Simply put, any Silver session recorded before 1964's "Song for My Father" and featuring Hank Mobley on tenor is essential. This one was made in 1956, the year that found Silver on an unprecedented tear: the sublime "Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers" (on Columbia), the delicately shaded and varied "Silver's Blue" (on Epic) and the latin-flavored "Six Pieces of Silver" (on Blue Note), with three versions of Horace's "hit"--"Senor Blues." Though the latter suffers from some of the overly arranged formulaic sameness of "Song for My Father," it's complemented by seven additional gemlike Silver miniatures, each affording more room for expressive solo work than the tightly wound main attraction. Finally, the two Silver trio selections--"Shirl" and "For Heaven's Sake"--rank among the pianist's most effective solo offerings.

After acquiring the aforementioned trilogy of vital disks, you'll want to pick up "Horace-Scope" (with "Strollin'"), "Further Explorations" (with "Moon Rays") and "Stylings of Silver" (no hits, just superb interplay between Mobley and Farmer). At that point, if you want your record collection to look like everyone else's, get the Blue Notes with "The Preacher," "Song for My Father," and "Blowin' the Blues Away." Just don't bet on them seeing the most playing time in your CD player.

John Scofield "Who's Who" Album Review

Transitional Scofield
This is a curious Scofield date. Although Sco's style usually varies from record to record, he tends to stay stylistically consistent on any one record. Who's Who is the exception to this rule. Half of the tunes are post bop, with the personnel sounding similar to the Dave Liebman Quintet Scofield was a member of at the time. The other half, with a different group of players, hints at the funk/fusion direction Scofield would take in the 80's. The post bop stuff is a harder listen--it took me a while to get into the harsh sound of the quartet. In contrast, the funk/fusion stuff is slick, just gorgeous. I'm probably being stingy with my star rating.... For those of you who don't know, Sco also recorded with Mingus, Miles, and Chet Baker. All those recordings are worthwhile, if you can find them.

He has also started his own record label, Amulet, specializing in eclectic percussion albums. At the last minute, Martin decided to place an insert which invited remixers to submit their mixes for a follow up compilation, and Drop the Needle was born. Play On Big John...
accent on the blues is a fairly funky recording. the tracks seem equally rooted in jazz and soul, but the organ has a way of making any kind of music sound a little more funky than it would without it. with some righteous help from marvin cabell and george coleman on tenor saxophones, patton lays down some mildly unstructured tunes that are different, but none-the-less pleasing. on tracks like "freedom jazz dance", patton hits notes that don't sound quite right. they work, but you'll know when he hits them. it's hardly a case of patton being a weak musician though, he's simply being crafty. accent on the blues borderlines on free jazz in many instances, but patton roots the arrangements and his solos enough to keep it from getting too out there. it's not the patton i would recommend starting with if you haven't heard him before, but it's a worthy addition if you have become a fan.

John Patton "Let Em Roll" Album Review

One Of Patton's Best!
let' em roll is definitely one of john patton best albums. in a somewhat strange quartet setting, the band is comprised of a who's who on their respected instrument - john patton at the lead on organ, the incredible grant green on guitar, the incomparable bobby hutcherson on vibes and the lesser known otis finch on the kit. the music all has a tight jazz funk sound and occasionally hints of latin, lounge and instrumental memphis soul. not surprisingly, patton gets the largest chunk of solo time, but green and hutcherson get their share. green seems a little uncomfortable with the backup roll, often playing a little lazily and harping on the repetitive chords (which is somewhat strange since he has been an excellent sidemen on many occassions). when it's his turn to solo though, he is the king. let' em roll is a hip release, and although it may get forgotten among the many other blue note organ-based releases, it's an excellent recording.

Let's get to it organ fans; this is sub-standard organ from Big John, and just plain nasty saxophone from little John(Zorn that is).The cover photo tricked me into buying this one. It is not worthy to be mentioned in the same breath as Mr Patton's 60's and 70's work.However, my loss is your gain. I feel it is my duty to warn buyers looking for swinging boogaloo away from this, and towards "Memphis to New York Spirit", "Blue John" and various others he did under the leadership of Lou Donaldson.If you know about organ music, you will know what I'm talking about.Trust me, I am an organ fanatic.I have hundreds of organ CDs and LPs, I keep this one in a sealed plastic bag so the bad ju-ju does not infect my good stuff. I am serious about that.

Blues Were Meant for the B-3...
...and there's nobody better to play them than the undisputed master of this great instrument, "The Incredible" Jimmy Smith.

Amen to what a lot of others have said here. This is a great addition for jazz and/or blues fans. Both camps will dig this album. Wonderful work by the sidemen, too.

This CD is good to play at any time of day, but I prefer "'round midnight." I don't know why, but this music seems to be at its best at that hour.

a spectacular achievement
read the linear notes and you think of mingus' black saint and the sinner lady, there's a story here, and maybe you want to fit the story to the music, and if that works, fine. but if you're like me and the story doesn't fit the music, then toss out the story and listen to the music, instead of forcing a fit.

there's one section that sounds like herbie hancock's watermelon man. it cooks. but that's not where the music is going either. that's just part of it.

g.u.t. was composed by stefon harris, and therein lies the genuis. brilliant orchestration. rather than worrying about grand theories and how they work, or mingus' black saint as a blueprint, or whether or not this is a jazz suite, tone poem, or one man's contribution to orchestral music, let the music play and take in the experience.

He's just getting used to the B3 on disc one
Disc one you can tell Jimmy is just figuring out the difference between the piano and the B3, but it picks up alot on the second disc. I was a little disappointed the first time I listened to it because nearly every one of the 40 or so other disc I have by him are outstanding, so my expectations are always high, but it's still great and disc 2 alone is worth the price of the set. Definitely pick up Grooving at Small's first if you are trying to decide between the two.

Swinging Organ grooves
Heres the fabulous Jimmy Smith playing Hammond B3 and driving a top notch band along. The title track is drenched in the blues, and after the theme statement Smith plays a superb two and half minutes solo. Then of course there is Kenny Burrell on Guitar and Stanley Turrentine on Tenor Sax who are no slouches themselves.

On "When I grow too old to dream" Jimmy Smith lets Turrentine take the first solo and after a subtle start to his Sax solo he builds up quite a head of steam. After a short Smith solo Turrentine is back for more with another solo. Its that sort of album. I'm guessing that they were having great fun in the studio when they recorded this. The rest of the album maintains the same high standard of the first two tracks.

The album was recorded in 1960 and of course has another of those classic Blue Note album covers. The original sleeve notes by Ira Gitler give plenty of background information on the album including how the album cover came about. A great recording.

The Emperor in all its glory!!
This is Jimmy's best album, my all time favourite. This is the real deal: just organ, guitar & drums. And most tracks are 6 min and more, so you get a lot of LOUD organ by the man. To me the best track in this session is Laura, breathtaking. This album will make reevaluate the stature of jimmy as a soloist; he is right there with the best of his time: trane, ornette, sonny. A masterpiece! One of my all time favourite Blue Notes.

This outstanding 2-cd set, 140 + minutes of music, contains Sarah's four best jazz sessions from the 1950's. She is recorded live with her trio at Mr. Kelly's and with a 7-piece group featuring Thad Jones and Frank Wess. In the studio she's accompanied by the Clifford Brown Sextet and her trio.Sarah made far too many recordings backed by orchestras. The sessions on these cd's show her as thoroughly at home with some of the best jazz musicians of her times. She's in great voice and swinging hard throughout.
