Sun, 27 May Al Macsween's sextet tribute to Moses Taiwa Molelekwa, Leeds

www.sevenjazz.co.uk
Sun, 27 May at Seven Jazz Leeds - This six piece band, led by popular Leeds pianist Al Macsween, will perform a tribute to the life and music of Moses Taiwa Molelekwa, one of South Africa's finest jazz pianists and composers. Moses Taiwa Molelekwa (born April 17, 1973 in Tembisa; died February 13, 2001) was a South African jazz pianist from a family of jazz musicians. His father was nicknamed "Monk", by the jazz society he belonged to, for his understanding of Thelonious Monk. Poverty and issues concerning apartheid caused Moses' education in his childhood to be haphazard. His father aided his musical education as best he could and as soon as he could afford a keyboard Moses showed promise. This led to his entering the Federal Union of Black Arts, from which he graduated with honors in 1987 and then made his professional debut. In the next few years he played with Miriam Makeba, Jonas Gwangwa, and others. In 1988 Hugh Masekela asked him to join his bands and this period saw Molelekwa winning the first of several awards. His solo career began in 1994 with the debut album Finding Oneself. By 1996 he had gained widespread attention as a solo artist, winning two FNB South Africa Music Awards for traditional jazz, and was seen as a rising star in South African jazz. He also played outside South African tradition or society. He played at the North Sea Jazz Festival and worked with Brazilian singer Flora Purim on his second album. He also did work beyond jazz with TKZee.

Sun, 10 Jun Sarah Brickel and her quartet, Leeds

www.sevenjazz.co.uk
Sun, 10 June at Seven Jazz Leeds - A distinctive voice, a nice sense of phrasing and an instinctive feel for the songs she sings Alan Bates has signed a star Sir Michael Parkinson A big personality with a big voice to match. And shes from Yorkshire How could Sir Michael Parkinson not be on her side! Sarah Mitchell is a star in the making. Sarah has performed alongside Jamie Cullum and recently supported James Blunt at the Dubai Jazz Festival. Sarah released her album 'You Give Me Something' on Candid records. However in 2010 Sarah made the decision to leave her former label in order to move forward with her career. Sarahs 2011 album release Music Box is self funded, produced, promoted and self managed on a shoe string budget. However the results are amazing. I truly believe that if I can get my songs heard that we will be very successful. Singer/Songwriter Sarah Mitchell knew at a very young age that she wanted to be a singer. She was known at school as the girl that sang, whether at mass, in school plays, or music concerts. You name it shed be using it to test out her windpipes. Sarah won herself a place at the famous Paul McCartney School in Liverpool - LIPA. Whilst there Sarah was asked to sing for Paul McCartney's VIP party, an incredible honour which she took in her stride. On graduating Sarah took several jobs starring in musical reviews all over the world gaining invaluable experience on repertoire from Broadway shows and the Great American Songbook before returning to Leeds and starting to reassess her career. I got back into doing what I really love, she says, working with musicians and singing Jazz, and then everything began to fall into place. I began songwriting again for the first time in years.
