Just recently I posted a few things on a social media site. The reaction I got was very surprising. I got comments like, this is $30 worth of materials, you can win these at a carnival with a good ball throw, as well as others. All the comments were negative and indicated the writers thought the product was cheap and worthless.

I was quite surprised by the comments because I know the Jaxx product and I know the superior quality of these bean bag chairs. It made me think, though, and I wondered if others shared this mindset and thought Jaxx bean bags were over expensive crap.

I can understand the thinking. As in any product, there is good quality and poor quality. When it comes to bean bag chairs, there are some half decent quality bean bags that are less expensive but they are few and far between. Truly if you are paying less than $100 for a bean bag chair these days, you are getting a relatively low quality chair that will last for a short period of time. I have had many customers tell me they purchased a $30 bean bag chair and the seams broke or the stuffing went flat or it wasn't comfortable. This is fairly normal. In general, these bean bag chairs are mast produced off-shore and there is little regard to quality.

Interestingly, this is where the Jaxx Bean Bags stand out. The Cone Denim is one of the last denims to be made in the United States. It is a beautiful fabric and definitely stands the test of time.

I understand the thinking that bean bags are cheap and throw away. It is because there are a lot of them that really are low quality. We have worked with many bean bag manufacturers and have had some who used to make their own product go off shore. We no longer work with these companies because quality dropped considerably. Fun Lounging in a Jaxx Pillow Sak

Hanging out at the lake this past weekend on a Jaxx Pillow Sak. Everyone had to try it out and it was a big hit with everyone, even the dog.

Brother-in-Law #1 has a bad back and cannot sit anywhere comfortably for any length of time. He was able to relax and drink a beer pain free in the Jaxx Pillow Sak. He was pretty impressed.

Turning the Jaxx Pillow Sak flat and it becomes quite a comfortable bed for shorties. Definitely wide enough for sleeping but not long enough for legs unless you curl up. Sure comfortable though.

Jasper thought the bean bag was pretty great and was sure it was his new dog bed.

Brother-in-law #2 sat further back and didn't get quite as much back support. He had a great foot rest though. And of course, Jasper had to pose for a picture.

We sure loved this Jaxx Pillow Sak. Niece and nephew curled up in it together to watch a movie on the iPad. It was a perfect little nest for them. I was impressed with how easy it was to move around. I didn't have any problem bringing it up from the basement or taking it back down to lean against the wall.

Need to get another another as one is just not enough!

What is Natural Latex Foam and Do I want my Bean Bag Filled with it?

Latex is the name for the "sap" that comes from the Para rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis. Latex is a sticky, milky substance drawn off by making incisions into the bark much like the process of collecting sap for maple syrup. The fluid is collected in vessels and the process is called tapping.

The latex is combined with water to make a thick suspension which is then whipped to froth and poured into molds. The froth is heated to a point of vulcanization where cross links are formed, creating the unique ability to re-shape itself after compression.

The majority of latex foam used in home furnishings products is processed using either the Dunlop method or the Talalay process. The Dunlop method was first developed in 1929 and is the process as described above.

In general, the Dunlop method is the most natural and organic process, adding few chemicals other than those required to complete the vulcanization process - zinc oxide, stearic acid and sulfur among others.

The Talalay process follows the same initial steps but then adds steps and blends natural rubber latex with synthetic latex. The Talalay process produces latex foam that is a blend of natural rubber latex and synthetic latex.

As natural latex is rubber, it is very dense. This makes it an ideal product to use in mattresses and cushions because it provides terrific support to the body and recovers its shape afterwards.

Latex foam is soft and supportive, providing a firm surface upon which to lie. It is very durable and can last for over 20 years without deterioration.

It is a natural product and free of harsh chemicals decreasing the likelihood of allergies and chemical sensitivities. It is naturally mite and mold resistant. It is a renewable resource, the trees grow on plantations and live for about 30 years, 25 of which are latex producing. All of these characteristics make latex foam ideal filler for bean bag chairs.

However, latex foam is different from traditional polyurethane foam which is traditionally used to fill bean bag chairs.

It can be shredded but it is very dense and rubber-like. As such it is heavy and does not take up a lot of space.

In order to fill a bean bag chair and have it be comfortable to sit in, a large quantity of latex foam is required. This makes the bean bag unwieldy, heavy and awkward. Depending on the fabric of the bean bag cover, the latex foam may be too heavy and the seams or fabric will tear due to the sheer volume of latex foam required to fill the chair.

So long as the chair is kept small, filling it with latex foam can be successful. Trying to fill larger chairs just does not work as well. It is not impossible, just be prepared to have a heavy duty liner and cover than can support the weight of the foam, and know that it will not be something that is moved around much. The bean bag will also be quite firm to sit in, more so than a traditional bean bag chair.

For the most part, if you want to buy a bean bag chair you have to shop online and purchase sight unseen. This is a scary prospect as you are spending a fair amount of money on an untested product at an unknown website. Returns are a hassle and can be quite expensive.

So before making a purchase ask yourself the following questions to ensure you end up with a bean bag chair that is going to work for you and your family.

Does the bean bag chair come with a warranty?
Does the manufacturer stand behind the quality of the bean bag chair? There are bean bags on the market with no warranties, 30 day, 1 year, 3 year, 5 year and lifetime warranties. The warranty should be clearly stated and you should be able to easily contact the company if necessary.

Does the bean bag chair come with a removable, washable cover?
Further to that, can you actually get the cover off the bean bag? If you have a removable cover but cannot get it off the chair it doesn’t do you a lot of good.
