“Language of Flowers” Annual Exhibition, Ikebana Demonstration cum Lunch

The Ikebana International, Johor Bahru Club, Chapter 235 will be holding its annual exhibition themed “Language of Flowers” at the Thistle hotel from 22nd to 23rd May, 2013. The exhibition, housed in the entrance lobby of the the Thistle will be opened by the Consul of Japan to Johor Mr. Tetsumi Murata at 11.am, 22nd May followed by lunch and an ikebana demonstration by Mrs Rekha Reddy, President of Ikebana International, Hyderabad Chapter.

The theme for this year celebrates the underlying universal appeal of Ikebana, a ‘language’ that knows no boundaries, the ‘language of flowers’. With 165 chapters across 60 countries, its 8,500 strong membership form an international community bound by a shared love of flowers and nature, the art of Ikebana and the cultural traditions of its spiritual home, Japan. Under its motto “Friendship through flowers”, this ancient art finds modern relevance and community across the continents.

All languages evolve, and the visual language of the art of Ikebana is no different. It has evolved from its strict temple roots of the 15th century to the ‘free style’ that defines modern day Ikebana. The demonstration by Mrs Reddy will be of the Ohara School, whose founder Unshin Ohara is thought to have bridged these two chapters. By introducing the vocabulary of newly available imported western flowers and freeing it from the confines of the Tokonoma, a traditional alcove, he brought Ikebana into the 20th Century.

In the exhibition hall, members of the club and invited guests from our neighbouring Singapore Chapter have been challenged this year to create an ikebana arrangement interpreting a single word of their choice. The arrangements will span the skill sets of new students to the art as well as those of their more accomplished teachers. A Tokonoma will also be set up in this space to acknowledge its symbolism in the evolution of Ikebana.

The Ikebana International, Johor Bahru Club, Chapter 235 was formed in 1991 and subsequently chartered in 1993. YM Gusti Puteri Retno Astrini is the current president. The club has 42 members who gather for regular program meetings. This year highlights include a Sogetsu demonstration at an English tea party, a day trip to Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay and a celebration of the Japanese New year with a demonstration of how to wear a Kimono. We stage one exhibition annually like this one and encourage the general public to come see the work of our members. Why you should know about PERSADA Johor once you have been in JB city? It is simply because it has become one of the attractions here. Most important conferences or exhibitions will be held at this glorious place. Glorious here means that it is complete with facilities and services offered. This place also governed some of companies such as Johor Corporation which are located at the lower ground in the same building whereas there are also grand rooms for its hotel on the opposite wing.

The classic interior designs are seemed to be matched with its luxurious arrangement. The warmth and welcoming environment there make people feel at ease every time they visit that place. Hence, many spots are possible for photos taking session! Moreover, there are plenty of parking spaces available here and people will have more choices where to park their car.

On 12^th April 2011, it was the second time I have been to PERSADA Johor in four years time stays at Johor Bahru. For those who do not know what is that place, it is an International Convention Centre for the state of Johor. It is located at the middle of the town Johor Bahru and has becoming a spot of attractions whenever there are special functions such as dinner or computer fair. Oh! As I’ve mentioned about the computer fair, I have also been here for PIKOM PC Fair events twice and that’s make it more than two times I’ve been at this place.

Back to what I have experienced in PERSADA, I found out this place has really fulfill the elegance of their designs. There are few ballrooms which name accordingly and each room has different capacity of people can be fitted. As for the last time dinner, I’ve been at the Tanjung Puteri 303 ballroom and it can fit more than 400 people at a time. Basically, the food and beverages available had made my day! Their experienced workers also served professionally to the guests. The experienced being there will give a positive impact to me but how about you? Have you pay a visit there recently?
