As you may know, I have an Etsy store where I sell Vintage Items. I have so enjoyed the store. It has allowed me to wander around thrift stores {one of my favorite, most healthy activities}, find treasures and offer them for sale. Well, the past 3 packages we shipped have been destroyed by the Post Office. My hubby, the shipper, is an engineer and that means he’s very detail oriented and very careful. We have double and even triple boxed these wonderful vintage items to make sure that they arrive in tact. We have marked each package fragile, etc.. The Post Office has broken them anyway.

Why don’t I use another carrier? Too expensive. One of the reasons that my store(s) have done as well as they did was that I kept the prices low for my customers. Charging a ton more for shipping and paying for custom boxes, etc. is just not what a smart business person would do. Therefore, I’m folding up shop - at least for the mainly glass, mostly fragile items I’ve loved.

Most of what I loved to write about in this blog, were the vintage items I found and loved . . . . . JBsVintage.

So, I need to re-think what will become of my blog and my business. If you are reading this, know that I appreciate it more than you will ever know. I’m going to take the next month or so to think about what changes I can make {if any} to keep my little business going. When I find the answer – you’ll be one of the firsts to know.

Merry Christmas {she said - remembering, now more than ever, the reason for the holiday – Jesus!} and God Bless You!

I love you guys!

Have you ever been interested in collecting something? Collections can make traveling {and shopping} more fun – I don’t often go to a new town without checking out the Antique Stores – and Ephemera is by nature light weight and portable.

Ephemera – paper items that were designed to be useful for a short period of time. Examples of Ephemera are tickets, pamphlets, bottle labels, post cards, magazines, paper advertising, etc.

Ephemera is one of the most thrifty was to collect vintage around. Need a unique gift for that special guy {or girl}? Check out the source under Advertising - if he’s into computers, gift a framed vintage ad with a photo of a computer for his man-cave. Here are some other thrifty Ephemera gifts to collect for yourself or someone else:

Postcards

One form of Collectible Ephemera is the Postcard. I think I’ve seen postcards in almost every antique store I’ve ever been in. Most collectors are interested in Post Cards from 1900 thru 1920 or Photographic postcards from the 1940s and 1950s. Collectors usually focus on one particular type of card. Here are some of the categories that Post Card collectors look for:

Holiday related postcards are extremely popular – especially Christmas or Halloween

Wartime Postcards

Hollywood Related – Actors, Actresses and Movies

Postcards with colorful pictures by famous artists

‘Tall-Tale’ postcards {this was a surprise to me – very interesting category, right?}

Source

Advertising

Another form of collectible Ephemera is Vintage Advertising. Once again, some folks drill down to a particular subject or brand. I’m sure we’ve all seen vintage ads for Coke, John Deere and other famous brands. Craftsman was one of the first and most collectible brands of advertising to collect. This one was so fun to research – this site has ads related to everything you might want to collect – everything.

source

Stock Certificates

This is something I hadn’t thought of or seen before – I was surprised at this one, were you?

source

Vintage Labels

Collectible Labels can be from the Victorian Era, can feature animals or children, can be limited to a particular brand, etc. Fruit Crate, Food, Drink and Bottle labels seem to be some of the most popular labels to collect. Thanks to the ‘digital’ age, copies of labels are available everywhere to download for your scrapbooks or other crafty needs. If you decide to collect the originals, you’ll have to be extra diligent to make sure your getting the real thing. Here are some examples:

Do you guys ever have crafty oopsies? It seems like every time I read someone’s blog or tutorial explaining how they made this, that or the other thing, they make it seem so easy. Even when I’m watching a video, it looks like cake. But sometimes when I try it, it just doesn’t go so smoothly {keepin’ it real here – smile – I’ve never said that before in my life!}. Remember Wendy’s beautiful cone wreath from the last post? It looked like this:

Now ya’ll, I didn’t even take a picture of mine, that’s how bad it turned out. I’m sad I can’t get some face time with Wendy so she could teach me how to roll those perfect cones!

Another thing I’ve been trying to do that hasn’t worked out so well for me is transferring images to a painted wooden surface. You guys know The Graphics Fairy has some amazing graphics, right ? Well, I’ve tried several different transfer methods that haven’t worked out for me. (P.S. Did you know that Karen {the Fairy herself} has three (3) different websites? I didn’t know until I just googled her to make sure I got the link right – wow! who knew?)?

So, anyway – back to trying to get the beautiful graphic onto my (usually vintage) project. I was over the moon when I found a projector at GW for only $10 – and I thought I had it made! Remember that sweet little vintage letter holder I found and used to try out my sample of unsanded grout faux chalk paint? At the end of that project she looked like this { a little lumpy from the undsanded grout}:

So, I gave her a coat of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Paris Grey and wanted to add a little French Graphic to her.

Here’s how my graphic transfer turned out using the projector {you know it takes brass ones to show you this, right?}:

So, what are those things around the ugly word? Leaves – birds, corn? Now, doesn’t that inspire you? LOL!

When I’ve seen people using a projector to trace the graphic onto their project, they are usually sitting on the floor with their object taped to the wall. In my defense, I can’t sit on the floor and so hubby put the projector higher than my work table, but I had to be pretty far from the design and a little cock-eyed when I was trying to trace – So, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

Soooooo, moving on. I found this plain jane vintage tray that I wanted to spiff up, right? So I went in search of another graphic and another transfer method. I found a transfer method I thought would be pretty simple (p.s. there are 12 different ‘easy’ methods on The Graphics Fairy website – see them here). I found what I thought was the perfect ‘doable’ transfer method here.

This method uses Elmer’s Glue. You coat a piece of card stock with Elmer’s Glue and let it dry. Then you print your graphic onto the glued side of the card stock. Next you paint your project (the tray) with Mod Podge and lay your graphic onto the project. Wait 24 hours, soak the paper with water and peel off the paper.

Here’s how it turned out for Matsutake – Isn’t this a beautiful clown?

And, this is how it turned out for me:

After thinking about this {a lot}, I think there are a number of ways I could have messed this one up. Here’s my theory:

The Elmer’s glue could have been too unevenly applied (i.e. thick in some places, thin in others)

The card stock may not have ‘stuck’ to all areas of the tray

I may have tried to peel the paper off before all areas of the graphic were completely soaked

I really want to try this one again (since I don’t have that many places to try out the projector).

So, now that I’ve exposed all {ok, not all, just a few} of my crafty mistakes, why would I want to do that? Well, I really see a lot of beautiful work that people do and it kind of makes me feel just a tiny bit inferior sometimes. And, I figure I can’t be the only one who doesn’t get it right the first {or second, or third} time, right? So, if your like me, and have to work a little harder to get it right, now you know you’ve definitely got company.

If anybody has used the Elmer’s Glue Transfer Method and had to try a couple of times to get it right, I’d love to know what worked for you. I’d also like to here from you if you’ve had incidents of “Oh Man, that’s not how it’s supposed to Look!” I hope you’ll be brave and share with us.

Have you ever met somebody and within minutes thought of them as a friend? Well, I ‘met’ Wendy when she commented on my fabulous Ironstone Pitcher (now on sale until Saturday). Wendy was so excited because she had just found 43 {yes, that’s right, Forty-three} pieces of white, yummy, crazed Ironstone at . . . wait for it . . . Goodwill. Bam! Instant Connection. I asked Wendy if I could feature her, and she graciously agreed. Her Blog is called ‘Sometimes Twice’ and your definitely gonna want to check it out! She does some fabulous work.

Now, about that Ironstone:

Check out the shape of these lovely dishes – so unique.

I love how Wendy styled them in this Home Goods basket, don’t you?

I edited the stamp and filled in the shadows so you could see that it’s stamped “Snowhite“, Johnson Bros, Made in England. The Johnson Bros company began in the late 1800s in Hanley, England. The company flourished and eventually had five manufacturing facilities. They produced their china in England from the late 1800′s until 1992 (anything that says Johnson Bros Ironstone but does not say ‘Made in England’ was produced after 1992 in China.

Wendy’s Ironstone has the very lovely pattern name of JB80 (hee hee) and was produced between 1974-1986. It’s a very lovely, plain white heavy ironstone with simple yet beautiful lines. I just love love love their Retro Vintage Modern Style, don’t you? Wendy’s not gonna sell though – she’s keeping it. Probably on a repainted Vintage Hutch. Are you beginning to see why I feel so close to Wendy?

She paints furniture (and makes her own chalk paint!):

If I had a little sister, I’d want her to be just like Wendy. And. Live.By.Me. We could go thrifting, paint furniture and collect Bell Jars together. . . .

Anyway – pop on over to ‘Sometimes Twice’ and check out Wendy’s blog. Leave her a comment and tell her Jeannie sent you, ok? I promise, your gonna love it!

Sometimes I just can’t sleep. No matter what I do. I know what my problem is {chronic pain}, but I don’t always know what to do when it happens. Here’s what I did just after Thanksgiving {p.s. we had a wonderful holiday with our kids in Tucson ~ just delicious!}. I couldn’t sleep, so I went down to my ‘office’ in the basement and found a stack of Thrifted Picture Frames and started to paint.

Charlotte {my newest Granddaughter who is just over 6 months old} wants a Gallery Wall in her Nursery, so we had white paint color-matched to her crib. I am actually re-painting a few frames that I had painted before so that they all match to make that little princess’s Gallery Wall perfect. Here’s how some of them turned out:

So, I also have a couple of Vintage Trays that I picked up when out and about. One you’ve seen before and is painted ASCP French Grey and the other one I painted White – then decided to paint it Duck Egg Blue.

I knooow - the French Grey one is really boring {to be fair to Annie Sloan, I had trouble with the lighting} and it really needs some help!

My intention is to add some graphics on each of the trays - they could both use some added interest, don’t cha think? I may end up taking the Blue tray to the Beach, so I’d like a ‘Beachy’ Graphic of some kind – a shell, a Pelican or something like that. I’m still thinking about the Grey tray. I’d really love some suggestions for one or both trays. Any ideas would be soooo appreciated!

I hope everybody had a great Thanksgiving and got lots of sleep afterwards, too!

Thanks so much for Reading Today!

So, it seems that I spend my time either painting, crafting or hunting down Vintage ‘Finds’ at Thrift Stores, Charity Shops, Garage Sales or Estate Sales. That’s what I’ve been doing in the last couple of weeks and once again, I found the ‘Pick’ of my life on Saturday {don’t cha just love that show, the pickers?}.

Picking

I was cruising the isles of the Goodwill store that’s about 15 minutes away from my house, and I saw this beautiful lady in a shopping cart {in the child’s seat ~ thank goodness}. Unfortunately, it wasn’t my shopping cart.  I couldn’t let her just sail on by without saying hello, so I stopped the woman with the cart.  “What a beautiful Ironstone Pitcher, do you collect Ironstone?”, “No, I just liked it – look, it’s got this stamp from England on the bottom,” she said. {picture me catching my breath – my heart beating fast}

We spent about five minutes, blocking the isle while admiring the lady. She does have a tiny ding right where the handle is at it’s tallest {I don’t think any less of her, though – few of us get through life without a few chinks in our armor}. Finally, I had to say goodbye to Katherine {that’s the name I gave the lady}, and I told the woman if she decided not to keep her, to please find me.

So, I wandered on feeling a little melancholy about Katherine. I couldn’t stop thinking about her charming melon ribbed shape and her scalloped rim & base.

Even as I found these two lovely apothecary jars {I also have a thing for apothecaries – I especially like this feminine little miss with the flowers on her hat – wouldn’t they be pretty on a shelf in a cottage style house?}, she was still in the back of my mind.

I was momentarily distracted by these twin Mad-Men like mid-century liquor decanters. Don’t you just love their diamond patterned square tops? I can see them front and center on a 1950′s portable bar, can’t you? Or maybe behind Don Draper’s desk on a little console, so that you only notice them when he’s closing a deal or entertaining a woman.

Just as I was loosing myself in that little Don Draper daydream, the woman tapped me on the shoulder, handed me the lady and walked away. I didn’t even get time to say “Thank You.”

Isn’t she beautiful? Many of you know that I love Ironstone – almost every “collectible” post I’ve written mentions White Ironstone. I can’t believe that I found this amazing piece. I would love to keep her, but as my mentor says “If you keep what you buy it’s not a business, it’s just shopping.”

Thanks so much for Reading Today!

So, anyway, I finally got one – and guess what, it was on sale!. It’s great. I luv it and couldn’t wait to make my first sign. So, I found my 50 cent pieces of wood { you guessed it – Thrift Store} and painted them with ‘Cocoa Bean’ acrylic paint from Walmart. Don’t you think my glass of Crystal Light Iced Tea adds interest? little joke . ..

Next, I had to decide what Word or Phrase to use for my Sign ~ and the Font to use in the Silhouette Editor. This was actually the hardest part. The Silhouette uses all the fonts you have installed on your computer. I chose a font called Monotype Corsiva, and the word ‘Believe.’

I used the orange vinyl that came with the Silhouette and cut the word ‘Belive.’ Note that I left out an ‘e’ and had to go back and add it. There’s probably a much more eloquent way to this, but I just added the ‘e’ close to the other cuts and then erased ‘Belive’ in the editor – that way only the missing ‘e’ was cut on the second ‘load’ of the orange vinyl.

After I laid out the word ‘Believe’ on my painted board, I decided it wasn’t the right size for the board and I used the same technique in the editor to add and cut ‘Mark 9:23′ (a really great Bible verse). When I had the letters where I wanted them, I stuck them to the wood (the vinyl has sticky backing) and that’s where the Milk Paint fun began { I used this project to try out Miss Mustardseed’s Milk Paint for the first time as well}.

Check out this awsome packaging ~ it is so unique and you can totally tell it’s Marian’s design if you read her blog:

Is that so cute, or what? I’m not usually particularly impressed with packaging, but this time I am.

You can read more about the application of the Milk Paint and my comparison to faux Chalk Paint here. I mixed the Milk Paint according to the directions found on the cute little card that comes with the milk paint and painted over the orange vinyl letters three times.

I really like the crackle effect I got with the Milk Paint and it was super easy to distress – just a little light sanding was plenty. Marian’s videos says that sometimes the paint crackles like this and sometimes it doesn’t, so I guess I can’t count on this every time.

Milk Paint, like Chalk Paint, requires that you finish it with a wax in order for the finish to be protected. I have {a ton of} Annie Sloan’s Dark Wax, so I didn’t buy Marian’s Antiquing Wax. After reading Marian’s post on FAQ, I decided to make a dark wax “wash” with ASCP Dark Wax and mineral spirits.

First I gave my project a coat of Clear Wax (I’ve used Carnauba Wax for all my Chalk Paint Projects because it’s what we had on hand for our concrete counter tops – I am using it here, too). I let the clear wax dry for about 30 – 45 minutes, until it didn’t feel tacky to my touch. I didn’t buff the wax – it’s just sitting on the sign at this point:

You may not even be able to tell that I have a coat of clear wax on, but be very careful and do not skip this step. If you apply dark wax directly to your project (without a coat of clear wax first), you will not be able to control how it looks when you’ve finished the project. It will probably be streaky and ugly and stain and ruin your work. So, don’t forget this step.

Next, I gathered all my tools that I would need to make the dark wax mixture:

I added a little dollop of dark wax to a small bowl (yes, it does look really nasty, doesn’t it?) and mixed in enough mineral spirits to make a mixture that looks about twice as thick as soy sauce thickened with a little cornstarch (you’ve seen that if you cook oriental food, right?).

Because I might be a little bit paranoid, I added another coat of clear wax before I applied the wash (with a regular cheap-o paint brush). I did 1/3 at a time, so I added clear wax to 1/3 of the board, immediately brushed on the dark wax wash mixture and let it sit for a few minutes and then wiped it almost all the way off with a paper towel. How much you leave on and for how long is a matter of personal taste.

Here’s the sign Before and After of the Dark Wax Wash:

So, what do you think? Do you like it better with just the clear wax (photo on the left) or after the dark wax wash was sparingly applied? Should I have put on more dark wax? What do you think?

Have you ever made a sign? If so, I’d really love to know what your favorite font is.

You probably know by now that I’m just a little over the moon about chalk paint – specifically about Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. These are some of my favorite projects I’ve completed with ASCP:

This is a thrift store mirror that I painted ASCP Old White and antiqued with a mixture of dark wax and paint thinner:

This is an old brown stained bread box that was ‘up-cycled’ with ASCP:

And this is a cute little ASCP spice rack was vintage stained brown before it was painted and updated:

Why am I talking about ASCP when you came here to read about Milk Paint? Because I want you to understand how much I Love Chalk Paint. But, for a girl like me, who is trying to make a go of a small business, chalk paint can get a little pricey. I even tried three different recipe’s for Faux Chalk Paint and evaluated them here.

Some of you also know how much I love Miss Mustardseed. So, when Marian came out with her own line of Milk Paint, (MMMP) you know I had to try it, right?

For this ‘Test’ of the Milk Paint, I used a “Believe” sign I was making to sell. The base paint of the sign is ‘Cocoa Bean’ acrylic paint and I was painting over ‘sticky backed’ lettering:

Anyway, to start my Milk Paint project, I gathered all the tools I needed to mix the paint. This part was similar to making the faux Chalk Paint, except I didn’t need any actual paint – the paint was in the bag {ah-ha! – pun intended}. I used the exact directions that came on the card with the Milk Paint – 1 1/4 parts water to 1 part Milk Paint. In this case, I used 2 Tablespoons Milk Paint and 2 1/2 Tablespoons of water and mixed it with my handy dandy $2.50 Good Will mixing tool. ( P.S This was too much paint for 3 coats of paint onto my 22 inch by 5 inch unfinished wood piece I used for my sign – it didn’t take much paint at all for this size project and I could have gotten away with 1 Tablespoon paint and 1 1/4 Tablespoons water.)

The first thing I noticed was the texture – it was much smoother than the Faux Chalk Paint formulas I tried before. I used my little tool and mixed for about 3 minutes and that got the majority of lumps out of my paint. Then I painted my first coat of Milk Paint over the stick-on letters of my sign. Right away I liked how the paint ‘flowed’ onto the sign. It was much smoother than the faux Chalk Paint. There were some little lumps left in the paint, but I followed Miss Mustardseed’s video tutorial and kind of ignored them – they were not nearly as noticeable as the Plaster of Paris or Un-sanded grout particles that were really obvious in my faux chalk paint test. I ended up putting three coats of Milk Paint over the ‘Cocoa Bean’ acrylic paint – when the Milk Paint dried, it just curled up over the letters but ‘stuck’ fabulously everywhere else. This is how my sign turned out (so far – I still need to add some dark wax to finish it off):

One of the major things I didn’t like about the faux Chalk Paint was the way it distressed. It took a lot of ‘hard’ hand sanding to get the distressed look that I wanted. The Milk Paint was very easily hand sanded to create that distressed look that I love. I wasn’t sure if the sign would come out with the ‘chippy’ look of Milk Paint or not, and this one didn’t.

So, what did I think of my first try using MMMP? I loved it!

Even though it didn’t chip, part of the brown undercoat shows through here and there and it looks sort of “crackley”:

to me this adds to the ‘aged’ look I wanted to achieve with this sign. I also liked the way the paint went on smoothly, didn’t ‘pull’, etc.. Another thing I really like about Marian’s Milk Paint is that I can store it anywhere. I have cabinets on my back deck and I like to store paint there because that’s where I do a lot of painting. With other paint, I’m constantly moving it around when it gets too hot or too cold

Will I be using this paint again? Absolutely – I can’t wait to collect more colors. And because the cost is almost half the cost of the chalk paint (including shipping), I’ll be able to. I’m not saying I’ll never buy more chalk paint, because I may not have the hard core ‘Furniture’ refinishing experience to know when I might need Chalk Paint in the future. But for now, I’m going to be stocking up on Milk Paint! I love the way it worked for my first sign project and I’m going to be adding more signs to my home and my store.

P.S. If you want to get more ‘chippy-ness’ from your MMMP, Marian has another video that says that if the paint starts to pull away when your painting or if you are painting on a glossy finish, the paint will probably be pretty chippy. If you know you don’t want a lot of chipping, use Miss Mustardseed’s bonding agent. Marion has a whole line of videos that will answer all your questions about her Milk Paint.

I feel so fortunate to live in Prescott. We have the best Thrift Stores {or Charity Shops for the Brits} in all the world ~ ok, the three states where I have actually compared – lol. So I guess you know what I did this week, right? You guessed it. I Went Thrifting.

You know one of the best parts about blogging? I’ve found that I’m not the lone ranger – lots of other women drag home some serious Treasures only to hear husbands say “Now where are we gonna put that?”

So are you ready to look at my newly acquired Vintage Treasures? Here we go! This week I found a 1950ish Coffee Table with really cute lines, and a 1970s orange-y oak End Table. That’s another thing I’ve learned from fellow bloggers – if you buy a piece of furniture to refinish, it should have some real good lines or a special design detail to make it stand out and be unique, otherwise even the best paint may end up looking a little … just ok. What do you think of these? Sorry about the dust. Later on, they will become my “Before” pictures.

Vintage Coffee Table

I love the details on the coffee table. The sides, the little button and the straight cut lines. I don’t love the stains – we’ll talk paint in a minute.

Vintage Oak Side Table

I tried out my Miss Mustardseed Milk Paint {MMMP} for the first time yesterday – I love it!! More about that in the next post. I may have to wait and buy the MMMP bonding agent before I paint either one of these – Plus the only color I own right now is Ironstone – which I luuuvvvvv, but I may want to paint the oak side table another color, I haven’t decided yet. I think it’s going to go in my sewing room for more storage space.

Anyway, here’s a picture of the ‘Smalls’, as they say in the biz . . . lol {I’m cracking myself up today!} . . . My total idols Marian and Shaunna (Miss Mustardseed and Perfectly Imperfect) own actual brick and mortar shops and they always talk about ‘smalls’ to fill up their shop space. Now that your laughing, here’s what I purchased to add to my online store:

I found two things with advertising that I liked: 1) The Campbell’s Soup pot and 2) The A&W Brand Root beer mugs. I found two wooden candlesticks to paint the same color as some wooden salt & pepper mills I found and sell as a set. I found these really cool looking ‘Barrel Jars’ for lack of a better term right now (I haven’t researched these yet, there may be a proper term for them). Some apothecaries and some glass candlesticks that remind me of the Eiffel tower for some reason – French Inspired? What do you think?

Now all I have to do is remove the sticky stuff (scotch tape and price tags) and shine them up, photograph them, research the prices and then they can go to ETSY.

So, about the two small tables. Which colors would you choose if you were me? Chalk paint for one and Milk Paint for the other? I’d love to hear from you.

Have you ever wanted to start a vintage collection but didn’t know where to start or what to collect? The first rule of thumb is to collect what you love – after all, you will be hunting, cleaning, sorting and displaying your collection for a long time. Here are some ideas and inspiration pictures of vintage collectibles:

Suitcases

Matching or not, Louis Vuitton or not, collecting vintage luggage is pretty popular these days. Use them as drawers in a chest, a nightstand, or just stack them up wherever you have some room. The added bonus of collecting vintage luggage or trunks is the storage space – you can never have enough of that, right?

Pyrex

Many, many people collect Vintage Pyrex (ummm – guilty). There are websites and blogs devoted to Pyrex. You can collect based on color, type or pattern:

Paula Deen Collects Pyrex and this is part of her collection:

This is a very small sample of the Pyrex pieces on sale at EBay.

I love these little refrigerator dishes:

Pyrex Coffee Pots are really cool and very collectible as well:

Clocks

Vintage clocks are soooo cool. I don’t have any, but I can see how easy it would be to stick a small vintage alarm clock into your suitcase when traveling. Collectible clocks range from huge coo-coo clocks to pocket watches. Here are some inspiration pictures for us to drool over:

Here’s a collection of vintage travel clocks:

I hope you’ve enjoyed these inspiration pictures. If you’d like to start your collection or just continue looking at any of the these vintage collectibles, you can search Pinterest, ETSY or the go to search engines like Google and of course the original on-line store Ebay.

Attitude of Gratitude

I’m Grateful for:
