Another collection that was not without its hiccups!...

Being a designer, working in PR and just juggling day to day life never left much time for the blog but you know I'm back with the most important deets, like my latest collection!!

'Murder She Wrote' was named after one of my favorite dancehall songs of all time by Chaka Demus and Pliers whose video for said song is probably my favorite video ever. The collection is to be reminiscent of that 90's dancehall era and so I drew inspiration from various old school videos. Fun, flirty, edgy and sexy! This is 'Murder She Wrote' and there's more to come!

WEEKEND STYLE: CFW EDITION

My weekend got crazy really fast... Friday morning I received a call from Pulse(hosts of Caribbean Fashion Week) that they wanted me to host Pulse TV and catch all the backstage action, interviewing designers, models and musical acts. AWESOME! I'm always up for anything fashion related. So here I was Friday, nails needed to be polished, nothing to wear(my usual dilemma) but thank God my braids were still looking FRESH! Check out a few of my highlights from the weekend and what I wore...I really need a photographer so I can stop taking photos I'm tagged in from Facebook lol.

After months of contemplating if box braids would fit me I decided to take the plunge over the weekend. What do you think? I also have both sides shaved but I'll wear it in a style that you guys can see it better soon. BAD HAIR WEEK!...GlamHEAD TO THE RESCUE

Have you ever had one of those weeks where you just can't make it to the hairdresser because your life just got really crazy or you're waiting to grow out a perm or deciding on a new hairstyle before you hit the stylist's chair??? I had one of those weeks, not necessarily the growing out the perm reason but a little of the other two. You can't tell it in this pic but my new "Flower Child" headband was covering up some "rude" edges lol. It's from my new GlamHEAD collection dropping in June...Look out for those pics soon!

A lot of people were asking about my dress when I posted it on instagram(@JAMESBLACKYC). It actually belonged to my aunt, one of my favorite people ever, who passed away 4 years ago. but it had NO LINING and it's out of eyelet fabric, so I added a white lining that actually made it flare some more. It's possibly my favorite dress. I love that it looks girly but the exposed back makes it also a little edgy.

DIY: PAINTED HANGERS

A couple years ago I advertised(prematurely) that I was going to come out with some 'YC' hangers. Painted, embellished funky clothes hangers. I think I was going to call it 'HANG UP', don't steal that it could still happen. I decided to share with you guys this picture for some inspiration on doing your own fashionable hangers. Paint cute fashion quotes on them, maybe even add a few gems or paint a design on it(think chevron or checkered). I can't wait to actually try it out. HAPPY DIY!

Life is better in black and white...As a sucker for the very classic combo of course I was drawn to US brand 'We Are MASSIV.' When I was asked to provide a few headbands for their mini fashion film, being written and directed in Jamaica by some of our greats, Nile and Storm Saulter, I immediately recognized the brand from Rihanna and her crew mentioning it on Instagram. So of course I just had to find my way on set and experience it all for myself. Being around creative people is always the best feeling plus I got some really cool free gear :). Big up to Nate and his team!

Fringe and slashes have been a staple to the YC label since as long as I can remember. I've always thought of my brand as one for the edgy woman who isn't afraid of making a statement. What more of a statement can you make in this high-waisted knee length slashed skirt. For the shoot I paired it with this oversized sleeveless YC sweater and it came out much better than I originally envisioned. Yeah it's coming up to Summer and I should be getting a little more colorful right? but of course BLACK is always in ;) I have something else coming up for you guys involving more slashes. By the way I shot this particular shoot with the help of my model who is actually a photographer and creative director for online Jamaican fashion magazine 'RISQ' who featured me as their cover story for their very first issue. How awesome is it when you find a print that you can't get enough of?! Fellow designers will know what I mean or even fabric lovers. I fell in love with this print and grabbed up all I could find, nobody else was going to get their hands on this!

I'm big on this "suit" look of matching tops and skirts. I'm an 80's girl and always inspired by that time, including Whitney Houston's "Dance With Somebody" video that propelled all these cropped top and high-waisted skirt looks that I started doing last summer.

It's the perfect date night outfit to drink wine and eat sushi(is my current craving very obvious???) while reminding that special person in your life why you're just so special! *YC girls do it better*

RIHANNA FOR RIVER ISLAND AD CAMPAIGN

Jourdun Dunn heads the singer's ad campaign released a few hours ago.

Hmmm ok. This is a late review but like most of y'all fashion fiends I was eagerly anticipating the live stream of Rihanna's River Island collection on Saturday, February 16th. First of all, I'm a fan of River Island and always keep their pieces in my mix of clothing faves and of course, no suprise here, Rihanna is a recurring face on JBSTYLEZONE so I'm a Rihanna fan; hence I was very excited about this union. My thoughts on the show? The models grossed me out...The clothes?? I don't hate it. There were a few pieces I could have done without like the very 'Baywatch' high cut red one piece swimsuit. Knowing Rihanna's style I thought she'd have some graphic print on it or even an expletive or a weed leaf, that would have been a little more interesting or at least controversial. I also could have done without the mullet(hi-low) dress. I just feel like that was very 2012 and had no business being in her collection, leave that to the Jenner girls. I didn't hate the fact, in fact I loved the fact, that the line was not this high fashion super edgy, "cyaa wear"(can't be worn) line. Well it is River Island so it wasn't going to be over the top and she did say it was going to be casual and edgy, words I frequently use to describe my own line, so I could appreciate its "edgy simplicity"(don't steal that). Belly baring, thigh high splits very Rihanna-esque so she stayed true to herself. Although it was clearly a throwback to the 90's grunge era (but not as messy), instead of floral I wish she used a "bomb ass" print for the tops with matching shorts. I was definitely not mad at that, I'm a sucker for the matching top and bottom look. It's clearly not a line for everyone, just like only Rihanna could get away with some of the things she wears, so make sure you have the attitude to pull it off. With all that said I walked away from this live stream wanting a few pieces(not sure if that means I'll actually buy, will decide when I see prices lol) but still craving that 'OMG' piece or even a few of those that I felt was missing. I'm sure it will be sold out once the prices aren't ridiculous for these easy going looks. The collection will actually be released on March 5th so I'll give a follow up review then. MY GOLD OBSESSION....SOME LIKE IT VINTAGE

A little overdue with sharing these pics but as part of a hosting gig for a local TV station I hosted the red carpet at the Youth View Awards on February 2nd and asked the very important question,"who are you wearing???". I got to ask some awesome local celebs like Cecile, Spice, Tifa, and Sizzla(who made sure to tell me that yes his Calvin Klein suit came right out of his closet) among others!

What was on my mind to wear??? Something vintage and of course something gold! I kept telling everybody I was channeling 90's Shabba (wasn't his style just the coolest? )Here comes in 'Some Like It Vintage'. GRAMMY'S 2013: MY BEST DRESSED PICKS

I won't do a full rundown and mention those not worth mentioning. So lets kick it off with Miss Rihanna..

OK, I must admit this is a really nice dress but I wanted wow! Rihanna has such an amazing body and I know we've seen more of it than we'd like to sometimes but I would have preferred something more figure hugging with some exciting elements. I must tell you though I was already disappointed when pics of her at the pre-Grammy brunch surfaced and I noticed she went back into the hair vault and selected the "pon de replay" weave ugh(the days when Rihanna annoyed me). However, the dress was lovely and it is Rihanna so she had to be mentioned here, but it seemed more of an Oscar or Emmy's dress NOT Grammy's.

BEY....Ok I love this jumpsuit and her body looked great in it! Black and white is a big trend now so awesome choice to stick with that especially since nobody else took it on to the carpet,so she stood out in that regard, and styling was perfection, hair, accessories etc. However, she seemed underdressed to me. More of an after party outfit or a night out to dinner with Jay.

And, in my opinion, THE BEST DRESSED OF THE NIGHT!...

Kelly Rowland in Georges Chakra Spring Couture 2013. I'm in love with this dress and she clearly made a statement on that carpet. It had me looking twice wondering if it was just nude material or was that actually her skin, a dress with some exciting element to it! Based on how it was worn on the runway you can see some adjustments were made in the bust area for her so she didn't expose too much. I love them both ways! I wish she did a slick back ponytail 'do like Beyonce but the dress was hot enough that I could kind of overlook the outdated hair style.
