After completing 3D models most of the contiguous structures in downtown Hattiesburg I have created this video tour of the area. My goal is to garner some ideas from others about using these models to promote downtown and individual businesses.

The Carter Building: The last 3D model ever for Google Earth

Since Google has abandoned hand-crafted 3D models in favor of automated, blanket 3D images of cities, they are no longer accepting user generated 3D models. The restored Carter building and adjoining 110-112 Front St. buildings were uploaded just prior to the October 1st deadline. It and other 3D models of downtown Hattiesburg are expected to remain intact on Google Earth for quite some time before Google gets around to auto-generated images of the Hattiesburg area.

Southbound Bagel and the Skylight Lounge

At the foot of the hill on Front Street in Historic Downtown Hattiesburg lies a familiar triangular building containing Southbound Bagel and the Skylight Lounge, both popular destinations for residents and visitors to the revitalized downtown area of the Hub City. This historic building was occupied for many years by the California Sandwich Shop.

America Building (post renovation)

Located at 207 East Front Street in Historic Downtown Hattiesburg, MS, the America Building is one of two structures known as Hub City Lofts, both resurrected in 2013 as fashionable, contemporary, urban living units for those who wish to live in revitalized downtown Hattiesburg. Built in 1907 by Dr. T. E. Ross, the building has been known as The Ross Building, the Royal St. Andre Hotel, and now the America Building. In the 1990's before renovation the America Building was home to the Bluhous Art Studio, and its roof was the venue of the alternative band scene of the day.

Coney Island Cafe - Hattiesburg, Mississippi

The Coney Island Cafe has been termed a historical beacon in downtown Hattiesburg. The Fokakis family immigrated from Greece and started the business (originally a fruit stand) in 1923. The business remains family-owned, and continues to provide a homey, 50's diner atmosphere for downtown customers.

Trinity Episcopal Church, located at 509 West Pine Street in Hattiesburg, Mississippi was originally constructed on this site in 1912. The original structure was modeled after a 12th Century Knights Templar Church in London. This 3D model depicts the church as it stands in 2013, still reflecting the 12th Century architecture in the Round and Chancel. Subsequent architects have retained the 12th Century styling through several rebuilding and additions through the years. The model should be live on Google Earth in the near future.

Backyard Battle: Saga of the Satanic Squirrels

As a recent diversion from 3D model building I began to photograph birds in the backyard, luring them with bird feeders. However, the local squirrel population had a different plan. This short video chronicles my squirrel frustration.

Cafeteria - Hercules Powder Company

The Hercules Powder Company Cafeteria is believed to have been built in the 1940s, some 20 years after the Hattiesburg plant opened in 1923. Although it was initially built as a cafeteria, over the years it reportedly contained a barber shop, a commissary, a pool hall, and even a one-lane bowling alley. The architectural style has been described as Streamline Moderne, a later evolution of Art Deco. Streamline Moderne includes ship-like features such as porthole windows, curved corners, and railings, all of which can be observed on this building. The building has been unused for several years, and has fallen into disrepair, however, this model has attempted to restore the building to what is believed to be a close estimation of its original appearance.

Smokestacks - Hercules Powder Co., Hattiesburg, MS

This pair of giant smokestacks still stand as monuments and reminders of the once busy and vital Hercules Powder Company of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Once one of the largest employers of the Pine Belt Region of Mississippi, this 170 acre plant began operations in Hattiesburg in 1923, and in its peak years in the mid-1970s employed in excess of 1500 workers. The Hercules plant, which produced a variety of chemical products based on pine resin, was an important part of the life and economy of Hattiesburg for some 80 years. Several weeks ago I did a Facebook search and found an old college buddy from Pearl River Jr. College that I had not seen for 50 years. Neither of us returned to PRC after that freshman year. Ron returned to his home in Missouri, and although we had been very good friends in 1962, we fell out of touch for the next 50 years. Never could we have imagined that as old codgers we would reconnect via something called Facebook on a network of computers in 2012. We had never even heard of computers in 1962.
I learned that Ron and his wife, Diana took a plunge in 2004 and purchased a historic bed and breafast Inn in Desoto, Mo. called The Arlington. I learned that the Arlington dates back to the Civil War era, played a role in the underground railroad, and once provided a room to ex-president of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis.
Since I have developed an interest in preserving historic architecture via Google Earth 3D models I offered to model The Arlington Inn for Google Earth placement. Here is the result:

Hotel Hattiesburg 1906 - 1961: Birthplace of Rock n Roll

Opening around the turn of the century in 1906, the Hotel Hattiesburg played an important role in the history of Hattiesburg, and provided a venue for a historic recording session that some say was the birth of rock and roll music. According to a book published by Rolling Stone Magazine two songs recorded by the Mississippi Jook Band (Blind Roosevelt Graves, Uaroy Graves, and Cooney Vaughn) are identified as possibly the earliest rock and roll recordings. The Graves brothers recorded these songs in a temporary studio set up at the Hotel Hattiesburg. The hotel was later known as the Milner Hotel and was demolished in the early 1960's.

Ancient Fortresses of the Island of Crete

I have completed the third of a series of ancient Cretan fortresses, most constructed by the Venetians many centuries ago. The fortresses of this series are located in the Chania Prefecture of western Crete: Frangokastello Fortress, Aptera Fortress, and Firka Fortress located at the port of the city of Chania.
