The JDRF 2023 Children’s Congress took place Sunday, July 9-Tuesday, July 11, 2023, in Washington, DC. We are especially proud of our eight Northern California Delegates who made a big impact on Capitol Hill: Marisa Bricca, (El Dorado Hills), Lucca Ford-Pisano, (San Francisco), Kathryn Moesta (Woodside), Zosia Mosur (San Francisco), Frankie Porrino (Sacramento), Damian Reynoso (Modesto), Nina Schwab (Piedmont), and Tennyson Tsai (Burlingame).

These extraordinary young people, all living with type 1 diabetes (T1D), met face to face with our nation’s legislators to advocate for support of the Special Diabetes Program (SDP) which provides $150M annually for T1D research. Right now, there is legislation to renew the SDP for two years  and increase it to $170 million annually. This would be the first annual increase in funding in 20 years. The Delegates also asked for support of the INSULIN Act which would make insulin more affordable for all Americans. The kids courageously shared their personal stories and asked Members of Congress to champion policies and funding that would benefit the T1D community.

Zosia says, “My favorite memory was the senate hearing. It felt like such a special thing to witness, and to be in the same room as so many influential people was a truly incredible experience. And getting to watch them do their work! With that, I also really enjoyed going to the FDA with 2 other families. I felt that I had a chance to share my story completely uninterrupted. I feel so lucky to be a part of all of this change. Thank you JDRF!”

Frankie got to meet and spend time with JDRF Children’s Congress Celebrity Role Model, American Ninja Warrior Women’s Champion, Katie Bone.

Damian says, “My favorite memory is walking up the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool to see the Lincoln Memorial. (I was really excited to see the Lincoln Memorial but my sugar started dropping on our walk there, so my mom bought me an ice cream I really enjoyed the ice cream my sugar stabled out and I got to see the Lincoln Memorial it was a lot of stairs!) Also, being able to fly across the country to share the importance of affordable insulin and why funding is so important meant so much to me because I was there to speak for all those that couldn’t be there to speak for themselves.”

Nina says, “It was exciting to be able to be a part of the upcoming change and it was nice to meet all of the other kids with type 1 diabetes.”

Tennyson says, “My favorite memory was playing Pokemon Go! with Lucca (California) and Peyton (Texas) during one of the session breaks and ending up on the ninth floor of the Marriott Marquis Hotel.”

We are currently hiring to fill two positions at the JDRF Northern California Chapter:

Development Manager

Mid to Senior-level development position at JDRF Northern California Chapter.  Serves in leadership role overseeing event budget and fundraising goals.  Partners with assigned volunteers and constituents.  Supervises select volunteers or committees.  Leadership responsibility for managing, coordinating and leveraging the comprehensive development areas of the chapter social events.

Remote position. Ability to travel locally in Northern California required. Occasional evening and weekend work required as needed.

Responsibilities:

• In collaboration with Development Director and Executive Director partner with volunteer leadership, donors, committees, and constituents to both renew and secure new support through event fundraising management including sponsorships, table/ticket sales, Fund A Cure, and donations for the chapter’s flagship Hope Gala event.
• Manages a personal portfolio of constituents to develop increased giving. Supports additional team member portfolios as assigned.
• Manages, evaluates, and expands fundraising and non-fundraising programs under the direction of the Development Director and in collaboration with the resource team and volunteer leadership.
• Provides management for chapter and community development activities such as fundraising, relationship building, events, corporate partnership development, volunteer development, outreach, advocacy, marketing and communication, and education programs.
• Helps identify and qualify a pipeline of leads/donors who meet agreed upon criteria for ‘mid’, ‘high-mid’ and ‘major’ giving potential, within and outside of our event structure.
• Helps formulate and implement strategies and tactics for Chapter fundraising and development activities to sustain continued growth, maximum penetration of core market areas and opportunities for expansion where appropriate
• In partnership with supervisor and team, manages and continually develops assigned committees providing leadership, cultivation, acknowledgement, material support, and assistance in building and implementing annual committee plans.
• Identifies, builds, and stewards relationships with community and corporate leaders as an integral part of volunteer and donor prospect development and engagement in JDRF activities.
• Oversees of Gala logistics which is handled by the Event Coordinator and ensure that the budget/timelines are developed and met for each applicable event.
• Oversees event vendors which is handled by the Event Coordinator such as venue, catering, and others across all events.
• Oversees the entire event registration and seating which is handled by the and Event Coordinator in charge of guest services
• Utilizes CRM database for community, donor, and constituent management.
• Develops and maintains high-level expertise in fundraising management platforms including Greater Giving and OneCause.
• Ensures that all deliverables are met according to event donor/sponsorship agreements.
• Helps to support in the creation of key communications-related aspects for campaigns and events such as the design and creation of invitations, social media content, and other event related communications.
• Networks with the National/Regional staff resource team and other JDRF chapters to discuss best practices and share new ideas.
• .Maintains a good understanding of JDRF’s mission and priorities.
• Supports and maintains the vision, mission, priorities, and guiding principles of JDRF. Serves as a key staff member in implementing the strategic direction and purpose of the Chapter.
• Performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

Development Assistant

This is an opportunity to join a strong Chapter team and work closely with the development team, local leadership, regional teams, and an outstanding group of volunteers to increase the reach and impact of the Chapter. This position is based out of the Northern California Chapter. The Development Assistant is a member of the Peer to Peer Fundraising Team and reports to the Development Director. The position is remote but must be based in Northern California to support the Northern California region. The expectation is that staff will be available for in-person meetings and other in-person gatherings as required and when safe to do so.

The Development Assistant helps to organize, coordinate, implement, and expand a variety of the Chapter’s development activities that build and strengthen links to potential and existing volunteers and donors and that grow the Chapter’s revenue mainly through Peer to Peer fundraising events such as the JDRF One Walk, Ride to Cure Diabetes, Third Party and Your Way events, as well as Challenge events.  This position also supports chapter corporate, individual, volunteer, and other community involvement related to Peer to Peer fundraising.

Responsibilities

• Supports and maintains the vision, mission, priorities, and guiding principles of JDRF. Understands the strategic direction and purpose of the organization and supports the Chapter’s fundraising strategies and business needs.
• Provide general administrative support to the Peer to Peer fundraising team and other chapter staff as needed.
• Assists in the functioning of the Chapter’s daily operations, projects, and tasks.
• Oversees diverse administrative duties for the Chapter including providing administrative support for fundraising activities, which includes managing fundraising events and donor prospects, supporting solicitations, tracking and acknowledging donations, and preparing information needed for meetings.
• Ensures timely and accurate daily usage of CRM to document activities with donors and volunteers.
• Assists with volunteer recruitment, assignment, and management as needed.
• Provides support for event social media, websites and marketing systems as needed.
• Certifies accurate recording of information in database, file system, and/or records. Creates, updates, and revises as needed.
• Manages Peer to Peer event supply inventory, orders necessary supplies when needed.
• Ensures personal accountability for meeting deadlines and responding to volunteers and other department requests.
• Keeps steady communication between team members and volunteer leaders.
• Maintains a good understanding of JDRF’s mission and research cure therapeutics.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

We’re thrilled to announce our Corporate Chair for the 2023 JDRF One Walk, NorCal: Albert (Al) Williams, Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Chevron Corporation. The Corporate Chair, in partnership with JDRF staff and volunteers, helps lead our efforts in accelerating corporate and community support for the Walk. In their leadership role, they connect their business associates and employees with the JDRF mission and with each other. Not only do they rally a Walk team in their own workplaces, but they open up their networks and recruit more participants and supporters of type 1 diabetes (T1D) research.

Albert (Al) J. Williams is Vice President, Corporate Affairs for Chevron Corporation, a position he assumed 2021. He is responsible for overseeing government affairs, public affairs, social investment and performance, and the company’s worldwide efforts to protect and enhance its reputation. Previously, he served as Managing Director of Chevron Australia and head of the Australasia Business Unit. Williams joined Chevron in 1991.

He serves on the Mississippi State University Foundation Board, the San Francisco 49ers Foundation Board, the Atlantic Council Board of Directors, and the USC Viterbi School of Engineering Board of Councilors.

Top Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) Advances of Fiscal Year 2023
Looking back at Fiscal Year 2023, there is much to celebrate in the progress we’ve made in T1D science. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) 83rd Scientific Sessions took place from June 23-26 in San Diego. FDA Clears a New Artificial Pancreas System
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared the iLet® Insulin-Only Bionic Pancreas System, which is designed to autonomously determine and deliver insulin doses to control blood-sugar levels, for people 6 years of age and older with type 1 diabetes (T1D). The iLet system is designed to have users enter only their weight for the iLet to initialize therapy. Read more.

The JDRF congratulates longtime JDRF collaborator Jeffrey Bluestone, Ph.D., for being elected to the National Academy of Sciences, in honor of his pioneering work on the immune system. Each year at the Hope Gala, JDRF presents the Impact Award to individuals or organizations who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to our mission of improving lives today and tomorrow by accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, treat, and prevent type 1 diabetes (T1D) and its complications. This year’s honorees, JDRF Game2Give Leaders & Founders, were selected for their extraordinary commitment to JDRF and the well-being of our community.

The JDRF Northern California Chapter began exploring video game fundraising after Dan Connors, a game industry veteran and T1D dad, set up a donation through the online game store Humble Bundle. Excited by the possibilities, we collaborated with Dan and Hans ten Cate, another T1D dad in the game industry, to help get JDRF Game2Give off the ground.

In 2020, JDRF Game2Give grew into a worldwide initiative and JDRF hired yet another T1D dad and former game industry executive Josh Larson to lead the program. Since then, more and more video game professionals with T1D connections have joined our volunteer group, all with a common goal: to develop creative ways to advance JDRF’s mission, and to have fun doing it.

Today, the JDRF Game2Give community includes hundreds of gamers, streamers, developers, and publishers who have used video games to raise more than $2.5 million for critical research into new treatments and potential cures—and we’ll keep at it until we can say “game over” to T1D!  To learn more visit jdrf.org/gaming.

Chara was a visionary art collector whose passion for art was evident in her extensive modern and contemporary art collection, ranked among the world’s top ten private collections.  She was known for opening her Tiburon and Los Angeles homes and offering tours of her private collection to benefit JDRF’s mission.

Chara’s commitment to JDRF was personal, dating back to Mother’s Day in 1982, when her daughter, Justine, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the young age of four. This diagnosis inspired Chara to dedicate herself to advancing research and finding a cure for the disease. Chara joined the initiative to start a local chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (JDF at the time, now JDRF) in the Bay Area, which became a family and community of support for those with the disease.

Chara’s passion for finding a cure for type 1 diabetes led her to become a leader in diabetes research and clinical care at UCSF. She played a vital role in the creation of the Justine K Schreyer Diabetes Center, which brings together doctors, nutritionists, psychological care, and other resources to provide comprehensive support for those living with diabetes. Her involvement in the creation of this center has made the Bay Area a global leader for diabetes research and clinical care.

“I first met Chara nearly 20 years ago as a young scientist at JDRF and immediately cherished her company. She was intelligent, witty, visionary, and passionate about improving T1D. In 2016, The JDRF Bay Area Chapter honored Chara for her decades of support with its Living and Giving Award at the Hope Gala. Justine was there to introduce her mother and present the award.

In recent years, Chara resided primarily in her Southern California home, enjoying the close proximity to Justine and her grandsons, while continuing her steadfast support of T1D research and JDRFs mission.

Chara Schreyer’s dedication and passion for finding a cure for type 1 diabetes will forever be remembered, and her legacy will continue to benefit countless people for years to come.

JDRF Collaboration Leads to Next-Generation Cell Therapy Research 
JDRF is committed to supporting the development of cell replacement therapies that will one day offer cures for type 1 diabetes (T1D). Research is focused on replacing cells that have been lost with donor-derived or renewably sourced cells. Last month, Aspect Biosystems, a company that has received JDRF funding, announced a partnership with Novo Nordisk to develop bioprinted tissue therapies. Read more.

A Mother-Daughter Duo Takes On Capitol Hill at the 2023 JDRF Government Day
JDRF Government Day is held every spring, when advocacy volunteers from across the US gather in Washington DC to share their stories and advocate for Federal support of T1D research and health policies. Our chapter had six attendees, including Bonnie Carlson and her daughter Marina Kaypaghian. JDRF Government Day is held every spring. Dedicated Advocacy volunteers from all over the country meet with our nation’s leaders in Washington DC to share their stories and ask for Federal support of type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and health policies that benefit our community. This year, the event took place March 19-22 with a focus on the renewal of the Special Diabetes Program (SDP), which provides $150 million annually for T1D research, and insulin access for all Americans. Our NorCal Chapter had 6 attendees, including Bonnie Carlson and her daughter Marina Kaypaghian. They attended about 10 meetings, keeping them very busy on Capitol Hill. We sat down with them to hear about the event from a mother-daughter perspective.

JDRF NorCal: What were the most memorable highlights from your time at JDRF’s Government Day?

Bonnie: The biggest thing for me was being able to attend with Marina. We’ve participated in various advocacy and volunteer activities with JDRF over the years, but this was our first event together as adults. It was meaningful for me to see Marina come full circle and become a full-fledged Advocate. Another highlight was hearing everyone’s stories from around the country. It reminded me why we were all there and gave me the energy and purpose to make our voices heard on Capitol Hill.

Marina: For me, it was powerful to be in a room filled with people who came from all over to support this cause. Although I’ve participated in several diabetes events and met many diabetics, this was the first event of this scale for me. I also found the presentations on technology and research, particularly the new Tzield drug, fascinating. As a pre-med student, I was inspired by the science, and it made me even more curious about our body and how it functions. I also realized the intersection of health and legislation and became more interested in policy. I met a staffer who was also pre-med and now working under a congressman – that was particularly interesting to me.

JDRF NorCal: What impression do you think Marina had as a young person on the Hill?

Bonnie: I think it was great to have someone her age. It really did change the dynamic of the meetings, because she’s a new voting constituent, and I think they really appreciate seeing young people get involved in the process. To have somebody who’s 18 getting involved in the process is a pretty big deal, and everyone was really interested in hearing what she had to say. She was very well spoken and poised.

Marina: I was definitely one of the youngest at Government Day. I think they saw me as a healthy, young, functioning person who is entering society. And that this disease could either make me or break me. I think a lot of people either think of diabetes with older people or with little kids. And I think it became a lot more relatable for some of the younger staffers we met.

JDRF NorCal:  What do you hope these congressmen and staffers remember most from your visit with them?

Bonnie: The human faces and our heartfelt stories. We had a couple folks who told us that our message was very clear. It wasn’t just about legislation. It was a human. They might have initially thought that the $35/month cap on insulin cost was already in place for Medicare. But then they understood the nuances, that we need insulin affordability for all Americans. There was a huge difference having these meetings in person rather than by Zoom, because so much happens in person, in the room.

Marina: I really hope that they remember all the effort and passion that we put into this and how much their past support has pushed us forward, and how much it has made my life easier and everyone else’s life easier dealing with T1D. I think seeing the impact, even in just one person, instead of reading about it, can really facilitate the most action. I showed my pump to almost everyone we met and explained that funding from the Special Diabetes Program – which we were advocating for – was what made this kind of technology possible. I was able to speak about how just a few years ago I was in a clinical trial for this pump and not even two years later, it’s available on the market. It’s really important for legislators to see that T1D isn’t some elusive disease. With research supported by the Federal government, we’re making headway and we’re continually making things astronomically better for people like me living with T1D.

JDRF NorCal: After attending Government Day together, what do you want people to know about JDRF Advocacy?

Bonnie: That JDRF Advocacy is an organized and powerful force! Our legislators are impressed by JDRF Advocacy and will listen to us. Everyone can become a JDRF Advocate and make a difference, using their voices from their own homes. Everyone can write to their representatives and ask them to support the renewal of the Special Diabetes Program. I encourage everyone to sign up today and start receiving the action alerts.
