Stir-Fried Wrist

2024-07-31T02:17:00.000-07:00

The last few weeks I have been trying to get back into cooking stir-fry, seeing as I was actually able to get my hands on most of the necessary ingredients. Last Wednesday (24th July), a few days after web hosting had been restored, I was cooking stir-fry for that night's dinner when once again I had a slight mishap doing it. Throwing in a couple of handfuls of frozen ready-cooked diced chicken into a wok of hot oil, I managed to get some of the hot oil splashed on my wrist, resulting in a slight injury.

It seems to be healing up OK now a week later, had a scab come off it last night (Tuesday 30th) after I was done doing dishes.

Not Posting Here Much

2019-10-18T17:48:00.000-07:00

You may have noticed I haven't posted on this BlogSpot/Blogger thing lately, and there is a reason for that.

It's mostly because I've moved back to my old wordpress blog on the paid webhosting due to monetisation issues on here (Adsense quit showing), so I'm using my old john-duck.co.uk wordpress blog modified to run on my other domain name jduck1979.co.uk

I'll probably post here again occasionally (if I remember), but for new stuff CLICK HERE for my main personal blog.

There are others I tinker with too under assorted brand names I've had a crack at creating.

I'm not doing that much blogging on them (but trying to), but been doing a load of work on the back-end to try build them up for the future.

JD Plays CS:GO – 2 New Vids on my YouTube channel | JD's Blog

JD Plays CS:GO – 2 New Vids on my YouTube channel | JD's Blog [view original post]: Back in July I screen-recorded a bit of gaming action on my PC using the XBOX app thingy on my Windows10 based PC (windows button + G key) to test out a few things, and did it with the game Counter Strike: Global Offensive, or CS:GO as it's also known as.

After an assortment of disruptions that mean't having to hold off on my editing and uploading, I've finally got round to uploading the things in January 2019.
This first one went live on 14th January, and features the Inferno Dawn map, which was one of my favourites until the game was ruined a bit by the Panorama UI update that made the game look too happy-clappy for the sort of game it's mean't to be.

This 2nd video went live today, and is set in another of my favourite maps, named 'Shoots'. From what I remember, the game didn't get off to the greatest of starts, but I eventually ended up getting one of my best scores for a while in the game somehow.

Coming to my YouTube Channel This Week - Delayed Footage from August

2018-11-14T12:30:00.000-08:00

It's the middle of November, and I've finally got the last of my video footage (I think it's the last) from the Whitby Regatta back in August uploaded to my YouTube Channel.

So, last month I had a slight mishap with a can of baked beans and one of my fingers/knucles.......

So, last Wednesday I had a slight mishap with a can of Heinz Baked Beans trying to get the last one out the bottom of the tin, and trying to reach in with my fingers instead of using a spoon.... here's what the little finger on me left hand looks like a night shy of a week later.....

Whitby Regatta 2018: More Video Footage from Saturday

2018-08-16T14:03:00.000-07:00

The 3rd of my videos from last weekend's Whitby Regatta went live on Thursday afternoon, just a cobbled together collection of leftover footage from Saturday afternoon, and here it is:

Full playlists of this and previous Whitby Regatta footage I've recorded can be found through my videos website:

Whitby Regatta 2018 - Greasy Pole

2018-08-13T06:03:00.000-07:00

The Second of the vids I've been able to get from the 2018 Whitby Regatta is up, and is of the Greasy Pole competition on the lifeboat pier.

Still not as good as the footage as I got back in 2016, as I couldn't get a decent position in the scrum assembled on the pier to watch up close, and had to basically stretch my arm up as high as I could with the camera pointed in roughly the right direction, not really being able to see the tilt viewscreen on the camera because it was in a position I couldn't really see it without burning out my retina's from staring in the direction of the Sun.

Whitby Regatta 2018 - The Raft Race

2018-08-12T13:30:00.001-07:00

The first of my video clips from the 2018 Whitby Regatta has been released onto my YouTube channel, and it's of the Raft Race. Another low participation effort this year (2 Rafts), and the footage doesn't really pick up until after they cross the finishing line.

Full playlists of this and previous Whitby Regatta footage I've recorded can be found through my videos website:

More footage from this year's Regatta still to come... next to sort out is the cackhanded footage of the Greasy Pole Contest that came after the Raft Race, and was shot best I could among the scrum on the Lifeboat Pier.

Cook 250 Whitby Event Footage

2018-08-10T16:00:00.003-07:00

Back on 6th July 2018 there was a "Captain Cook 250" event in Whitby with a replica of Captain Cook's ship recently acquired from Stockton, and a couple of tall ships sailing into the harbour.
[View Photo Gallery].

It just about finished me off getting into position to get the footage, and after many delays I've finally got footage cobbled together into something I could upload to YouTube and (eventually) my other video channels as appropriate.

Whitby Snow 2018

2018-08-01T14:24:00.000-07:00

Back in January 2013 I shot a video of a snow weather event in my local area, then stitched the clips together into a full video that I uploaded to YouTube, and it has sinced notched up over 10,000 views.

I had a long wait to see enough snow again round here to be able to film the sequel, but on 27th February 2018, it finally happened.
It's taken me a while to get round to editing the footage (31st July / 1st August), but now it's finally up (see above, or Click Here to view it on my YouTube Channel).

Of course the original snow vid is still uploaded, as well as a less well viewed prequel to it from 2010.

More of my online video content can be found by going to the JDUCK1979 Vids website I knocked together.

2018-05-22T10:28:00.001-07:00

It seems the blogger app also still works on me old iPad that's still running on iOS5 (don't like the app icons on newer versions).

So maybe I will get round to blog more often like I keep promising myself

One thing I hate about May

2018-05-21T23:49:00.001-07:00

As I lay here in bed, I'm beginning to think I don't like the month of May very much.

For the 3rd year running my chances of getting to sleep is being hampered by the buzzing noise of the wild bees that have taken up residence in the wall cavity next to my bed.

The only upside is that it's given me the chance to see if this old app for my old phone still works for typing posts to this thing.

My life may be lacking Lemon Buns

2018-02-19T21:38:00.000-08:00

Lemon Bun, by Botham's

Lately I've been trying to remember when I last got to have a "Lemon Bun", somewhat a traditional staple of Northern English bakeries, and it's close cousin the "Lemon Finger Roll" (basically the same idea but more in the shape of a hot dog bun).

Basically it's like a sweet Bread roll / Fruit Teacake with sultana's in it, and a big dollop of lemon flavoured white icing on top. Used to get them all the time from Botham's bakery in Whitby delivered to the family grocery store (TV chef James Martin is also apparently a big fan of these too), while in other bakery chains dotted around Yorkshire (e.g. Cooplands?) I remember seeing more elongated versions, and I think same too over in Lancashire when I was a kid and my Grandparents took me over that way for Holidays around Blackpool / Morecambe / Lancaster / Lake District in Cumbria, etc.

Starting this post has also got me thinking about other products from the same place I don't seem to often enough these days such as the Butter Bun + the Chocolate Jap (still get stuff delivered in from Botham's, but my Dad seems to go easy on the range to save wastage).

The Butter bun is basically a sweet bread roll that's been slashed open, had a generous dollop of buttercream stuffed in it, then had a generous dusting of icing sugar.

The Chocolate Jap, is like 2 biscuits that kind of remind me a little of a Farley's rusk that've been sandwiched together with a generous coating of chocolate buttercream, then liberally covered in chocolate sprinkles.... they're really messy to get hold of, but taste so good.

If you liked this post, don't forget to check out my personal website (been re-building it, think there's still a bit more to remember to do) + the new site I knocked together to put my video content.

YouTube changes

2018-01-17T23:14:00.001-08:00

It was recently announced that YouTube were making some changes to the service that means small time plebs can no longer make money from their vids on YouTube's platform.
[vid about it 1 | vid about it 2]

So I made this.......

How to get started Youtubing

2016-11-14T07:53:00.002-08:00

This popular video site sharing website has been around for over 10 years now, and gone from short crappy quality clips of pets & people doing the sort of stuff you'd see on You've Been Framed, to High quality HD footage of the same stuff + even people having a crack at doing their own "Online TV Shows".

These range from things like Tech Reviews to DIY Electronics + Prank Shows, some of which are better than mainstream shows like Beadle's About or Candid Camera managed to pull off.

There seems to be more & more people wanting to have a crack at it (not just because you can earn money online by Youtubing), but not quite sure how to get started, so lets see what I can do to help..........

The first thing you'll need is a camera. It doesn't have to be anything too special, but basically helps if you use pretty much any camera made in the last 7yrs or so that's capable of recording in 720p or 1080p High Definition (HD).

A Digital SLR Camera (DSLR) or a "Bridge" camera is likely to be too big & heavy to lug around if vLogging (video blogging) on the move like Roman Atwood (and others) do on a regular basis, and you're best off with either a Digital Compact camera, or a small handheld video camera such as from the Sony Bloggie range, and their equivalents from other manufacturers such as Panasonic.

A proper camcorder such as my Panasonic is acceptable and not too bad to carry around with you all day too (and the quality is quite stunning).

My long time favourite for digital compact cameras is Fujifilm, but last time I looked it appeared they'd slimmed their range down to a selection of "Bridge" cameras + some very expensive compact system cameras with interchangable lenses. They've got exceedingly good colour reproduction qualities though.

Amazon.co.uk Widgets

Most the top Youtubers appear to be using Canon + Sony Digital Compacts at the moment, and GoPro cameras for when things get a bit more sweat inducing, such as ziplining or messing about in water.

The next stage (assuming you've already set-up your youtube account), is to shoot some video.... that's easy enough, just point the camera at want you want to film, and press the record button, etc.

After that, you'll probably want to edit the video, and for that you'll need video editing software. Some of this you can get for free (e.g. Windows Movie Maker), other higher end software can end up costing you as much as the camera did. If you're a Mac user, you'll probably be using iMovie. For Windows users like myself, my current personal favourite is Corel VideoStudio Pro X5, which has been succeeded by a number of newer versions, it's up to VideoStudio Pro X8 now I think. You can buy it either as a standalone product, or bundled together with my favourite photo editing software Corel Paintshop Pro X*.

Editing isn't really too complicated if you've never done it before, it's basically just a matter of dropping the video file onto the timeline at the bottom of the software, and adding the various bits & bobs like captions as and where needed.

When you've finished editing, you'll need to save the finished video file, then wait for it to start rendering. This may take a while, and it helps if you've got a fair bit of RAM installed in your computer..... it'll do it, but very slowly if you've got the minimum 2GB of RAM needed to run Windows... and it's best to have at least 4GB of RAM installed, and perhaps even make use of Windows ReadyBoost.

Once done, you can then start uploading the video to Youtube. This also takes what feels like forever. While that's in progress you can add a video title, keyword tags, opt to monetise the vid (if you've enabled that) + put a place tag on a map to show where you shot it (though you may want to give that a miss in some circumstances).

And that's get you started Youtubing, I hope.
Though there's still more to do yet... you may want to gain followers & views on Youtube by promoting your video via other Social Media outlets such as Twitter + Facebook + Instagram (among others), and collaborations with other Youtubers via sites such as ChannelPages, and checking your Video Stats via Youtube + elsewhere.

The British Woman's Ideal Man......

2016-10-11T07:42:00.001-07:00

After many years of getting rejected & kicked in the teeth, and a similar time looking through the mutants the various dating websites wrongly suggest I might be interested in, I have managed to build up a picture of what most modern British women's ideal man apparently looks like.

Basically most of them appear to be looking for a 6ft+ tall, Tattoo covered lager swilling moron who drives a BMW. This probably also explains why many women end up disappointed with men, as those characteristics they're looking for also match all the signs of someone who has a very microscopic penis.

It's also why I've gotten kinda sick of their attitudes, and grown to like American women much better, as they show far more interest.
