DIY Ice Lemon Tea + Orange Dessert

Here I want to introduce a very easy to prepare dessert. The ingredient you will need:

A frozen pack of Ice Lemon Tea, or any pack drink you like
One orange, or any fruit you like
Evaporated milk

The required ingredients, take note that the F&N ice lemon tea is fully frozen.

Now, use pastle to soften the frozen pack of ice lemon tea.

Put the soften ice lemon tea pack aside, and cut the orange into small cube.

Cut open the ice lemon tea and pour the "ice" onto the orange cube.

Mix the ice and orange well and you can enjoy your dessert.

If you like, you can add in some evaporated milk.

Try it, and please comment on what extra ingredient you use for the dessert.

This is the first time I order from Sparkfun, and below are some photos on the received items, delivered by FedEx. I am being charge RM39.17 for Customs Duties.

For me, the overall experience in placing order from Sparkfun is quite good. I simply "add to cart" from sparkfun website, pay using PayPal, and the items arrived in around 1 week time. The only disadvantage is the Custom Duties charged. Will definitely order from Sparkfun again.

Gigabyte GM-M7700B Mouse

I recently ordered a Gigabyte GM-M7700B bluetooth mouse at price RM40 + RM10 (very cheap bluetooth mouse) shipping from lelong. It reached my house yesterday, and I've been using it for around 1 day.

It comes with 2 Duracell AAA battery:

Compare to my previous mouse, the size is smaller : ( not very suite my big hand.

Overall the bluetooth mouse is quite nice, easy to pair, and once paired, everything is automatic. You can turn off the mouse anytime, and once you turn it on, it automatically connected to your PC/Laptop. I choose bluetooth over normal wireless mouse (with a USB receiver) because it doesn't use my limited USB port. So, switching from the old wired mouse to this bluetooth mouse, I get extra one USB port. My only complain for the mouse is the size of the mouse (too small for my hand).

Ubuntu: Change The Location for Maximize, Minimize and Close Button

If you are switching from Windows to ubuntu, you will definitely not very happy with the location for Maximize, Minimize and Close button for the windows under ubuntu. For ubuntu 10.04, 10.10, 11.04, and 11.10, the default location for Maximize, Minimize and Close button is on the top left of the windows which is opposite for Windows which is on the top right of the windows. File explorer in ubuntu:

So, to change the location for the Maximize, Minimize and Close Button to the right side, you can follow the steps below:

Open Terminal, use Ctrl + Alt + T shortcut. Key in "gconf-editor" and press enter.

It should open out a Configuration Editor after you press enter. Under the Configuration Editor, goto apps > metacity > general, and try to find button_layout.

The default value for button_layout shoule be "close,minimize,maximize:". Now, change it to ":minimize,maximize,close". You will see that as soon as you change the value, the location for the Minimize, Maximize and Close button change to right side immediately.

Now you can have your Maximize, Minimize and Close button at your familiar location.

I just finish watching Post Grad. You can click on the link above for more information about the movie. I give 4 star out of 5 for that movie.

The story is about a cute girl called Ryden Malby, graduated from collage and starts to look for job. She concentrate and worry a lot about her future, jobs, and forgets about her "cute" family and people around her. One phrase I like the most from the movie is:

What you do with your life is really just one half of the equation. The other half, the more important half really, is who you're with when you're doing it.

What the movie are trying to say is sometimes we forgot about the most important thing and person in our life. Once we start getting busy in our work/job, we will forget about our family, ignoring the most important things in our life.

I Received My Casio EF-341L-1AV

In my previous post, I talked about this Casio watch (http://jdx7071.blogspot.com/2011/10/casio-ef-341l-1av.html) that I wish to buy. And last few days, I finally made my decision and bought this watch from a forumer at forum.lowyat.net. The price of the watch is RM280 and he gave me free Poslaju shipping. Today, I receive my Casio watch. It arrive by Poslaju in a nice packaging. I will show the images of the opening process of the package.

My First Nanoblock (Grand Piano)

I came across with the ActionCity booth at City Square Johor today, and I found this very nice block toy called nanoblock. It is very similar to Lego building block, but the difference the size of this nanobloc is smaller compare to Lego. I bought this nanoblock Grand Piano package for RM27.9 (standard pricing for this package is RM32.9, but they gave RM5 discount for the promotion period).

I tried building the grand piano, following it step by step guide included in the package, and after around 5 minutes, I have my completed nano size grand piano:

The first impression about these nanoblock is they are really small, and as how they advertise it, it allows the user to build more detail model. The overall build quality is quite good for that size. One thing to highlight about the nanoblock package is they actually give extra building block in the package. Means that you will still have around 20++ extra building block even after you completed the Grand Piano. These nanoblock, I will say it is not very suitable for children due to its size. I think it is design for adult as a miniature size item/model for display purposes. For me it will be a very good collectable stuff/toy. Hope to get more other package in the future.

Acer HS244HQ 3D LCD Monitor

I just received the Acer HS244HQ LCD Monitor (not belong to me). We bought it for a research project in UTM. Basically the research project requires a 3D capable monitor to display some 3D graphics. This monitor will be connected to Dell Alienware M11x via HDMI 1.4a port, which is available in this monitor and also M11x. From what I found, HDMI 1.4a is the latest technologies in HDMI that allows the PC/Laptop to transfer 3D Stereoscopic contain to the monitor using single HDMI communication. Most of the 3D LCD Monitor use Dual DVI link for the 3D contain, but only few models like this Acer HS244HQ uses HDMI 1.4a for the 3D contain (thats the reason we choose this model).

It is always good to have 2 display, that I can have both of the display to show 2 different windows that I don't have to switch between windows that frequent.

FYI, this monitor do comes with built-in speaker, but the quality of this speaker is very poor. I can say that my Dell Studio 1555 produces better audio quality compare to Acer's build in speaker. The ports available at the back panel are VGA IN, HDMI 1, HDMI 2, Audio IN and AC IN (NO DVI Port!!). About the quality for the display, I will say, it is not as expected (I am not sure if that is because it is designed for HDMI 1.4a, and my Dell Studio 1555 doesn't have that). However, using VGA port produces slightly better quality compare to HDMI port (I am not sure why).

For me, overall build quality will be 7/10, graphics quality around 7/10 (compared to my Dell Studio 1555 full HD display) and the sound quality 3/10 (poor sound quality). But it comes with this capacitive button for the LCD setting which is quite nice.

I haven't run any 3D stuff on it, my Dell Studio 1555 do not support 3D output, and the Alienware M11x still on its way.

How to: Install Google Chrome on ubuntu 11.10 (64-bit)

I just finish installing a fresh copy of Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit. One of my first thing to do is to install Google Chrome.

After download the deb file for Google Chrome 64-bit, I found out that I cannot simply run the deb file to install it. Ubuntu 11.10 kind like reject the installation.

I found the solution from http://www.google.co.uk/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=381d28fd49d3fc52&hl=en, the workaround for this is to install Google Chrome via Terminal. The instruction:

Step one: Download chrome to your Download Directory from http://www.google.com/chrome

Step Two: Open Terminal ( Ctrl + Alt + T )

Step Three: Run this command:

sudo apt-get install libnspr4-0d libnss3-1d libxss1 libcurl3

I guess this step is to install some required libraries for Google Chrome.

Step Four: Run this other command (Not Optional)

sudo dpkg -i './Downloads/google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb'

For this step, please modify the command if your downloaded Google Chrome installer is not located in your Downloads folder. For me the Google Chrome installer is located under my Desktop, so the command will be:

sudo dpkg -i '/home/tph/Desktop/google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb'

Step Five: Hit the "Super" Key and search for Chrome.

After following all the steps, I had my Google Chrome running nicely under my Ubuntu 11.10. Thanks to Luke Woods.

How to: Ubuntu Automount a Drive on Startup

One thing ubuntu is different compare to Windows is ubuntu do not automatically mount all the partition/drive on the system during startup. Under the file explorer for ubuntu, you can click on any drive to mount it, and you can also unmount it anytime you want. There will be problems when you have an application that is auto start with your ubuntu and that application need to access the files under the unmounted drive.

To solve this problem, you can configure the drive to automount everytime your ubuntu started. Run this command under your terminal to install Storage Device Manager:

sudo apt-get install pysdm

After the installation completed run Storage Device Manager from Unity (press Super key and type Storage Device Manager).

Before you do any changes to the Storage Device Manager, you will need to check for the Device label for the partition you want to enable automount. You can open Disk Utility to get the Device label for the particular partition. For my laptop, I wish to automount the partition called Data, and the Device label is /dev/sda4.

Now, under Storage Device Manager, click on the partition you want to enable automount (for my case, sda4) and click OK on the "Configure now?" dialog box. Make sure that the selected drive is correct before you click OK, and take note your hard drive configuration might be mess out if you mistakenly configure the wrong setting or partition. So, becareful with this.

After clicking OK, click the "Mount" button, "Apply" and "Close". Now you can try to restart your ubuntu, and the partition that you "mount" just now should automount everytime your ubuntu start.

ubuntu 11.10 Installing ATI Driver FGLRX

My laptop, Dell 1555, comes with the graphic card ATI 4570. After having the fresh install of ubuntu 10.11, it pop out an installation for additional Drivers, which are asking me to install the driver for my graphic card. There are 2 available options:

ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (post-release updates)
ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver

One with post-release updates, and one without. After searching for which one to install, I found this page, http://askubuntu.com/questions/66707/differences-between-the-2-fglrx-graphics-drivers

From that page, one of the answer says that the one with 'post release updates' will install Catalyst 11.9 (latest version) and the one without 'post release updates' will install Catalyst 11.8, and there has been issues with the 11.9 driver with Unity.

The safest bet is to install the Catalyst 11.8 (the one without 'post release updates').

Hope the installation goes well and the new driver can improve the performance of my ubuntu.

I Just Install Latest ubuntu 11.10 64-bit

I just complete the installation of ubuntu 11.10 on my laptop, and currently writing this article using preinstalled firefox browser. For me I always like to try out different OS, latest Windows 8, ubuntu, and I even tried out hackintosh previously when I am still using desktop PC.

This new version of ubuntu, I will say the outlook is quite nice, with the new unity feature by ubuntu. For the functionality, I am still exploring, and hope that one day I will be able to write some application for ubuntu. I believe in the future, everyone will be using open source OS and open source application.
