Once again the FDA is looking out for the Big Drug Companies, instead of protecting the people. In Dr. Mercola's article of April 23, 2012 he shows how the FDA is trying to bypass Congress by issuing "Draft Guidance on New Dietary Ingredients."

Over 60 Billion Doses a Year and Not ONE Death, But Still Not Safe?

Vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements have a tremendously safe track record, yet they are often singled out as being potentially dangerous by government agencies like the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

This – the notion that dietary supplements are unsafe -- is the premise behind the FDA's Draft Guidance on New Dietary Ingredients, which would require the supplement industry to prove the safety of natural ingredients that, in many cases, have been on the market and used safely for decades.

As new research from the American Association of Poison Control Centers' National Poison Data System reveals, there were zero deaths linked to nutritional supplements in 2010, the most current data available.

Please take action to protect your rights, and contact your Representatives now. Dr. Mercola includes a sample letter in his post. I also urge you to tell your Representatives to get the Big Drug companies out of the FDA and make it an agency that protects the people instead of protecting the drug companies profits.

In 2009, during the height of the debate over Obamacare, the law’s architect, MIT economist Jonathan Gruber, was all over the op-ed pages, talking about how the bill would reduce the cost of health insurance. “What we know for sure,” he told Ezra Klein, “is that [the bill] will lower the cost of buying non-group health insurance.” His words were trumpeted by the law’s advocates, and were critical to persuading skittish Democrats to vote for the bill. But it turns out that “for sure” doesn’t mean what you thought it did. Because, now, Gruber is quietly telling state governments that the law will significantly increase the cost of insurance. And it will especially do so for young Americans: the ones who most struggle to find affordable health coverage.

Read this post was a great deal of attention. It is from Kaiser Health News. If you read between the lines it shows what happen during the healthcare war in congress. This shows that when government gets in bed with big business the people get left out of the process. Each of these groups had a lot of input into this law, but we the people were left out. This is why, in my of looking at this law it needs to be gone and some common sense solutions found. The CBO has already almost doubled the projected cost sense the bill was passed. We must move to a consumer driven program and get the government out of our healthcare. We also need to take responsibility for our own health care and quite looking for someone else to pay for it.

Congressmen Jason Chaffetz (R–UT) and Jared Polis (D–CO) have introduced the Free Speech about Science Act (HR 1364), a landmark legislation that would allow the flow of legitimate scientific and educational information.⁷ The new bill provides a limited and carefully targeted change to FDA regulations so that manufacturers and producers may reference legitimate, peer-reviewed scientific studies without converting a natural food or dietary supplement into an "unapproved drug." According to Rep. Chaffetz's website, the provisions of HR 1364 do the following ⁸:

Allow dietary supplements and healthy foods to cite legitimate scientific research
Provide a clear definition of the types of research that may be referenced by growers and manufacturers
Ensure that referencing such research does not convert a food or dietary supplement into an "unapproved (and therefore illegal) new drug"
Retain the authority of FDA and FTC to pursue any fraudulent and misleading statements

According to Rep. Chaffetz ⁹:

"It is important for individuals and families to take charge of their personal health by making the right decisions to get and stay healthy. This includes accessing information so that individuals can adjust habits, eat healthfully, and take appropriate dietary supplements to prevent and even treat health conditions.

The Free Speech About Science Act helps insure their access to legitimate scientific research to make the necessary decisions to improve their personal health and the health of their families."

Rep. Polis adds¹⁰:

"Today's science has shown that vitamins and nutritional supplements can offer successful, natural alternatives to drugs. As we begin to reform our nation's healthcare system, supplements are an innovative way to help reduce costs.

The Free Speech About Science Act is a common sense act that will make it easier for doctors and consumers to learn about the cheaper, healthier alternatives to costly medicines that food and nutritional supplements provide."

As of December 2011, HR 1364 is in the first step in the legislative process and has been referred to committee. The majority of bills never make it out of committee, so we need your help.

Please lend HR 1364 your support by signing on as a co-sponsor TODAY.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sent a warning letter to Diamond Food for making truthful, science-backed health claims about the omega-3 fats in walnuts
Because the research cited health claims that omega-3 fats in walnuts may prevent or protect against disease, the FDA said walnuts would be considered “new drugs” and as such would require a new drug application to become FDA-approved
Under current FDA law, if a food or natural supplement makes a medical claim, it's automatically classified as a drug
Regulations currently prohibit manufacturers of dietary supplements or producers of food from referring to any scientific study documenting the potential effect of the substance on a health condition, punishable by large fines and even jail, even if the science is completely credible and true
You can help by supporting the Free Speech about Science Act (HR 1364), a landmark legislation that would change FDA regulations so that manufacturers and producers may reference legitimate, peer-reviewed scientific studies without converting a natural food or dietary supplement into an "unapproved drug"

This article shows how the FDA is totally controlled by the Big Drug companies. This bill would stop this bought and paid for agency from taking another Constitutional Right away from you. As Dr Mercola asked in his article:

Is it Not a Constitutional Right to Share Truthful, Scientific Information?

This is so ridiculous, as censoring a food producer's right to inform others about scientific research is in violation of the first amendment. The American Association for Health Freedom (AAHF) states:

"The FDA ignores first amendment protections and censors the communication of valid scientific information. The agency seems to have lost sight of its mandate to protect the public and has instead come to see itself as the guardian of corporate interests."

Can you imagine the drug companies not being permitted to tell you what their products could do for you... do you think they would roll over for that? Not a chance, but they don't have to simply because they are the ones who can afford the FDA's approval process. With few exceptions, it's impossible for food producers to assume such costs for natural and therefore non-patentable products.

It's ludicrous for the FDA to require natural products to be "vetted" the same way as drugs. In nearly every case, natural products are safer and more effective than synthetic drugs, as science has shown, time and time again. Not to mention that natural agents are much less expensive than pharmaceuticals, and can even be grown in your backyard!

It's unfortunate that the FDA is so beholden to the drug industry that it would waste it's time to attack a walnut manufacturer for citing scientific research while allowing Frito Lay to claim that its Lay's potato chips are "heart healthy."

And walnut producers are not alone. Cherry growers have also been threatened by the FDA with jail time if their websites even contain links to scientific studies from Harvard and elsewhere, outlining the health benefits of cherries for gout or arthritis pain.⁴ Green tea growers have received similar threats. As I said, it truly boggles the mind…

This why I am asking all my readers to join me in backing HR 1364 by going to the Alliance for Natural Health's site and signing the letter to your Rep.'s in Washington to co-sponsor this important bill. I also ask you to pass this on to your friends and ask them to join with us to get this important bill passed. I still have problems with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), because it still is a third party healthcare delivery system and not quality healthcare controlled by you and your doctor.

Until you take responsibility for your who healthcare and stop wanting someone else to pay for it, you will not have the control of your care or the cost. Their are option available but you will need to we willing to do the research and ask the right questions.

Here are a few ideas:

1) Go with a high deductible no frills plan to cover the major problems.

2) Pay cash of your regular Doctor visits, and other routine expenses.

3) Look at accident plans that pay per accident. Example NACD (National Association of Consumers Direct)

4) Add a program that gives you PPO discounts for your Doctor and other routine expenses, (lab, Rx, vision, Dental, etc.

As a small business owner you have many things to think about on a day to day basis. But how often do you think about health care for you and your employee’s? With health care insurance cost rising at such a high rate, it is becoming harder to be able to afford to offer health care benefits. Unfortunately the trend on rising cost does not appear to be slowing down. It is now estimated that 30% or more business’s are saying they will stop offering employer based health insurance to their employee’s in the near future due to the rising cost. The Kaiser Foundation show the cost in 2011 to average over $14,000 per year per employee, for family coverage.

So as a small business owner what do you do? You want to be able to offer employee benefits, but can you afford to keep doing it? You do have options, you can drop health care as part of your benefit package, you can increase the employee share of the cost, are you can become creative, an find different combinations of programs to offer your employee’s. There are several combinations available to you.

1) Go with a high deductible healthcare insurance with no dr. co-pay or any other add one’s, which will lower your cost.

2) Add a discount program to it to lower the Dr. Visit cost. With Dental, Visions, Rx, ECT. (you could let the employee pay for this thru payroll deduction)

3) Enroll in an HRA program which would allow you to cover some of these costs for your employee (with a reimbursement arrangement) and use it as a tax savings for your company.

4) Offer an accident plan to your employee’s that would pay per covered accident.
