The basic idea is: We custom design some top quality pillows together with our clients, no shape or size excluded, you may even want to recycle your old pillows. Then, we put in the work making the dream come true. We also have affordable, ready-made pillow inserts, great for cutting your budget down even further.

When you take them home you can then pair them with: additional simple throw pillows, a basic couch, or a bland but unchangeable color scheme. Or you may want to coordinate them with design fixtures in your home, professionally elevating the level of design, but on the lightest of interior design budgets. WHAT'S IN A NAME

IR: The process of rolling out new pieces in the shop involves many fun steps, and may it be a small side table or a full sized overhauled couch in full patchwork leather, always it deserves a name!

Often, the inspiration for title name comes in a fleeting second from a spark of inspiration, like striking a match. Whether Johnelle herself does the deed, or one of us gets to dub a piece, a gut feeling is always where it begins.

And like the strike of the match, a good name can be a fire-starter, beckoning new inspiration. We like to think our furniture radiates personality, that pieces converse, and a room filled with love and design comes to life. Thus, a name can be another part in the process of making those connections.

Our 'TAHOE' ottoman is upholstered in a vintage wool blanket, accented with herringbone buttons, and a green velvet piping, along with the recycled materials that re-iderateing the 'Keep Tahoe Blue' statement, the nature of the cozy wool and color scheme on 'TAHOE' recall us of relaxing cabin stays in the local oasis of its namesake.

Let a name spark your imagination, you may find that you just can't get that flame out of your head.

PULL ME!

IR: In our last post I wrote about the power of small change for big effect. We love affordable, minor revamps that posses the ability to alter style, color scheme, and essence of a space. Well, today, expanding on the subject, we're talking about another small accent yielding tremendous effect. The name of the game: drawer pulls!

From big or small, ceramic to brass to even loose rope, pulls are nearly universal, and therefore, can be an interchangeable feature as easily as earrings in your ears.

With the mid century KENSINGTON vanity in the first photo, matching pulls were affixed. But rather than finding modern pulls for this 60s classic, designer Johnelle Mancha balanced out the angular lines of the piece with a floral, provincial set of pulls.

Another example in the mid-century realm, is our ever glamourous, black and gold LAURENT side tables, the last photo. Johnelle took two great pairs of pulls, and combined them, giving the tables each the same mismatched set, brass on the one side and a pop of pink on the other!

Similarly, pictured top right, is one of the DECO TWINS (still available, I might add) side tables, another of a mid-century origin, which have been accented with comparable, yet mismatched pulls. We love vintage, but there's no rule that says a look is set in stone, we like to bring our vintage darlings into the now with some contemporary flare.

Lastly is our HAMPTONS side table set to the bottom left; darling basic tables jazzed up with a New England kitsch. The simple design of this table allows for flexibility with the color choices and hardware. Logically the anchor pulls seemed the perfect fit for these cuties. It just had to be done.

Really, we love how, by styling with pulls, you can transform a chest of drawers or side table from static to rustic, or from stale, to a sleek modern. From years in the interior design world, those of us at Mignonne have learned how drastically the details like hardware can truly define a piece.

KROEHLER DINING CHAIRS

IR: When your furniture purchases can pay off over a lifetime or more, it's the ultimate. Such is the case with our Kroehler chairs. Their streamlined, modern frames make them versatile, and able to coordinate within a variety of looks. Brand recognition and integrity make certain they appreciate with time. Investing in furniture like this means you can have your piece longer than the life of the upholstery, when you finally do tire it out you'll have quality bones worth the cost of revitalization. Although purchases of this nature can come with a higher price tag than an ikea dining set (though not necessarily), they pay for themselves in longevity and integrity.

The Kroehler dining chairs we have in the shop have been expertly upholstered by us, in a demure black canvas to highlight the festive, teal Bolivian textile on the chair backs. We find it essential to not simply mimic a style, like the ever popular, mid-century modern, but to put a re-envision on it, with the Mignonne touch.

Kroehler is an American furniture company that's still in business today, and in it's heyday was one of the larger producers of modern furniture stateside. The company had a big part in branding the sleek modern look of the mid century eras, a look that has vastly outlasted its time in popularity and relevance.

EVOCATION

IR: Our recent post about the naming process got me on a long trail of thought. How things can often remind one of anything from a movie, to a memory and so forth. It's worth exploring concept of evocation in a broader sense than naming alone, it occurred to me. Making connections can be a great jumping-off point for a brainstorm on design projects small to large, not to mention a big help when styling, after you bring home that statement piece you've been coveting!

To evoke is to call on, may it elicit a reminiscence, or create memory anew. These occurrences are what create soul in an object or a piece, and often, what makes us fall in love with furniture.

A recollection of a past era, a nod to a place one's traveled (or dreamed of traveling), or a design that pleases the senses, these are some evocations that can all help us make valuable choices when coordinating.

Though perception may differ from one person to another, the power of evocation is nonetheless undeniable, and we think, that this is when personal style becomes truly alive.

One of designer Johnelle Mancha's newest creations is her lovely kilim ottomans in small and large (available on our website), evoking in many, images of a bohemian atmosphere, with influences of eastern art and tapestries draped on the wall. Something clever about an evoked emotion, memory or idea is that it can be physical, or emotional, may it be in a piece found, custom designed, or a combination thereof. PROJECT: WELLS RESIDENCE

IR: We're always proud of our budget projects, for a number of reasons. Being able to do a lot with less is an accomplishment on its own, but being able to all sorts of help people love their homes without hurting their pocketbooks is retribution of the best kind. For the Wells interior design project, Johnelle used her design expertise in revamping this living room, and the best part is, the clients had a big hand in making it happen. Upon Johnelle's advice, they took it upon themselves to do painting, installations, and buying, while Mignonne handled the design vision, including some of the expert tasks we do best, like scouting, furniture revamping, and staging. By working with the client along the way, they were able to do a DIY home makeover, with a professional lead.

With designer Johnelle Mancha's advice and expertise, the clients were able to do a lot of the work on their interior themselves. The Wells' had a color consult with Johnelle, for paint work they were able to execute, as well as direction in window treatments, and styling accents, which they were able to purchase and install. While they were putting in the time at home, the shop was busy revamping clients own coffee table, scouting for hard to find decor features, like the stunning kilim rug. With direction and assistance by Mignonne, the clients were able to accomplish a professional level finished product, with more self satisfaction, not to mention a lesser budget.

TREND: MISMATCHED DINNERWARE

IR: Mixing and matching dinnerware; so it may not be the freshest of trends, you may not even see it as a trend at all, rather a necessity. But here me out. Just take a look at a predominant styling choice of some of our favorite new restaurants. Designers are going cheap and recycling both, by mismatching glassware, dishes, silverware and the lot.

In Johnelle's travels, something she can never resist picking up is dishes and other kitchenware that strike her fancy. We do our own mixing and matching, when styling the shop and doing interior design projects, but don't let us do all the fun parts for you. Come down to the shop to get started on your own curation yourself.

When thoughtfully cultivated, a mismatched collection can uplift your kitchen and place settings. Read on for a few of our favorite benefits of collecting for a mismatched array of dinnerware.

Don't cry over spilt milk, or the shattered glass, either. You needn't fret when you break a piece, it won't ruin your set.

Its all in the numbers. You may find incomplete sets at far reduced prices, combine them! Whether you choose to keep within a theme or go all over the map with style, you no longer have to worry about numbers of plates or numbers on price tags.

Tell your story. We just love a thought out scheme of pieces, eclectically regaling different tales. A homey and nostalgic dinnerware and glassware collection invites you into a contemporary setting, making modern, intimate and cozy. Glassware for instance can enhance your drinking experience, but that doesn't have to mean you must use the predisposed vessels, give classic a twist. Think outside of the box. Often, we like sets or individual pieces that may not perfectly match our preexisting dinnerware, this doesn't have to mean you they're off the table, pun intended. THE EMERALD STUDY

IR: Green, the color of freshness, of nubile elegance, free of gender, and synonymous with nature. Adding a little green is never a bad decision, whether it's in a room with few colors or many, the color adds an organic shine. As a hue, we never tire of green, from lime, to kelly, to forest, and so it's always a pleasure rolling out a green piece (pun most certainly intended)! The natural hue brings life into a room that no other colors can rival.

Art Deco desk 'SAFARI' (available here) has both class and wit in an emerald green a flapper gal would envy. There's a plethora of inspiration for the use of green furniture, and don't even get me started on the infinite styling options. I could drone on and on about how you can pair green with black and white, natural wood, a rainbow of colors, metallics or leathers... but rather than that, we thought we'd just getting the ball rolling with some inspiration! ART WORKS

IR: We love statement pieces. In fact, we love them so much we spend our days designing, building them, styling them, and putting them to market. And here's why: though design isn't always synonymous with art, we see the art in every piece we put our hearts into.

Owner and designer, Johnelle, personally has a major role in every design, artistically leading all projects undertaken here, and started her business designing and restoring furniture for the love of it, in addition to, of course, her uncommon knack, a talent and eye for it. Her artistic aesthetic is where the Mignonne brand came from, and with a background in fine arts, she creates pieces with acute attention to detail, as well as designing broad and cohesive interiors.

Our dazzling 'LA PAZ' chair, upholstered in hand-picked, one-of-a-kind textiles, like the Bolivian aguayo cloth and the well worn leather of a vintage jacket, is a stand alone piece, and a shinning example of furniture as art. Or is it art as furniture?

The upholstery, a collage in a color palette of Kahlo-esque vibrancy. The pink, effervescent, double-welt piping draws the eye around the hand-carved, art nouveau wood frame with stark contrast, while the smooth and daring ebony leather simultaneously compliments it.

'LA PAZ's charisma lies not just in the bright colors that she dons, but in the combination of class and spice. She's outstanding, maybe even a bit shocking, but never is she offensive. Evoking emotion with soft and hard sides, this chair is a piece that can converse with all the ages. And I don't just mean by the appeal to the nubile, and those who've seen a few more seasons alike. In a classic room or a modern one, she's one chica who knows just what to do. All together empathetic and inspirational, and we just can't get over her and her show-stealing charm.

OUR FRENCH SISTER

You may or may not know of our sister shop in Brantôme, France. Regardless, you're about to learn more!

Kim Mancha (seen in the bottom right photo, standing to the left of Johnelle) owner and proprietor of The Bohemians. She has been living and working in Brantôme since 2007 when she upheaved her life, leaving behind hometown and a career, but not her two darling pups.

She's been inspired by french culture all her life, and beginning with her school days, dreamed of, as one could say, a bohemian life in France. After years of dreaming, sending her children (Mignonne owner and lead designer, Johnelle Mancha and her brother) to Berkeley's French American school, Ecole Bilengue, and eventually making numerous trips (only after both her children had a chance to go, she adds) she began searching for a vacation property. With the help of Johnelle, Kim found what would turn out to be her year-round home, in no less than her favorite area.

Her shop there specializes in all things beautiful, from home decor to hand-made clothing lines. She sponsors young artists and craftspeople locally and internationally, and takes pleasure in fostering creativity in all people, hosting monthly workshops in furniture restoration and design guidance. Kim especially loves supporting female owned and operated companies, and carries a clothing line as well as a artisan paint line owned and run by inspiring and talented women; La Fiancee Du Mekong of France, and Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan out of England.

Unfortunately, so far, I only make it to the South of France every 15 or so years, and won't be due again, by that logic, for a long while. So, although it would have been [much] better to chat in person, alas, I was left only to communicate with my interviewee over long distance. Nevertheless... I had the opportunity to correspond with Kim, and had such a fun time listening to her take on life, art, culture and business, in the South of France.

IR: So Kim, as an American transplant living in the town of Brantôme, France, can you tell me where that is, and a little about that area?

KM: Brantôme is in the Dordogne, which is a department (kind of like county) in the Southwest of France. France is kind of funny in that an area can have more than one name/ designation... so while it is in the Dordogne, it is also in the Aquitaine Region and also part of the Perigord (divided into four parts... confused yet?! I still am). The area is dripping in history; the Dorgone and Aquitaine has been fought over between France and england for centuries. It is an area with rich agricultural activities and known for all of its many delicacies such as truffles, cepes (mushrooms), nuts, wine, duck and everything associated. The cuisine is rustic and delicious. Normally, we have four distinct seasons, which I really like and is very different from the California Bay Area where I was born.

IR: How often do get to explore the area with daughter, and owner of Mignonne, Johnelle?

KM: Johnelle has come every year since I moved here and usually manages to stay 3-4 weeks. We always find time for a new adventure when she is here.

IR: When packing for a traipse throughout Southern France, what items would you say, are essential to your quest?

KM: Mostly just an empty suitcase, to bring back all of my treasures acquired on the road, and a camera to capture and share it all. And the odd little black dress never hurts for those spontaneous special soirees.

IR: Are there any do-not-miss sights that compel you during your periods of traveling and antiquing?

KM: France is chock full of amazing markets, both food and antiques/vintage treasures. I especially love the old covered markets, which are not only beautiful (usually with lots of light and glass), but remain the same from years gone by, with specialists in meats, cheeses, fish, bread, fresh vegetables, spices, pastries, on and on! And they are always beautifully presented.

IR: When scouting, often there are special indicators of value or unique attributes in a piece that make it compelling, what kinds of qualities details do you, Kim, and Johnelle keep an eye out for when looking for décor items?

KM: I watch for intentional details that make an item stand apart, whether that's unique embellishments on a piece of furniture, some extra details, or special touches on a clothing item. What is the back story or inspiration to a handmade piece of art?

I am big on color, so when looking at a furniture piece: does it offer enough interesting form or detail that I can highlight with color? Paint is transformational, but I still need the bones to make it happen!

Lastly, durability and functionality. Here in my little corner of France, I have to keep a sharp eye on pricing, because pockets aren't that deep, everything I sell must offer quality and usability as well as beauty. My customers have high expectations when they shop with their limited disposable income.

IR: Do you have a favorite story from your and Johnelle's travels in the country you now call home?

KM: Oh gosh, I am sure I have forgotten more than I remember. I could share more than a few related to getting stuck somewhere because I forgot that on this certain day or time, the store or bank or gas station was closed. Adjusting to a more balanced style of life where everything isn't open 24/7 just in case you might want to buy a donut at 3 am. One time, I had tickets for a Sunday concert and all the gas stations that accepted cash were closed and my American card didn't work in the machines. So there I was out in the middle of the French Countryside, driving on fumes because I decided to risk it, when putt putt putt... and then nothing. Luckily it was summer so sleeping in my car, until it could be sorted the next day, was an option.

Needless to say, I got better at planning and anticipating, and realizing that life would go on if I couldn't shop for whatever silly thing it was at 10:30 pm.

Folks here work to live, not live to work. Family, friends and quality of life vs. things, are their essentials. They work to have enough, and enjoy sharing the richness of their life with others.

IR: And to finish off: When someone you know is visiting France, what is it you believe they absolutely must enjoy before they leave?

THE STUDIO, A STUDY

IR: There are no small ideas, only small spaces. Defunct are the days of grandeur, and we say: be gone with them, anyhow! Small spaces have practicalities which facilitate a modern life, unfettered by tedious upkeep and a heavy bill pile.

So lets talk about how to make the best use of a small space. With some practical solutions devised by lead designer Johnelle Mancha and her ever-innovative Mignonne team, we'd like to present some examples of just how we've conquered the dilemmas of the small space, and helped this client make the most of their more petite abode.

Customized pieces can be the best route in making the most use of a space that's dimensionally challenged. Dual use decorative and storage pieces, like an entryway hall tree can provide the feeling of a hall or foyer, without the real existence of one.

Multi-use pieces designed for a dual purpose space, like the kitchen island designed by Johnelle and husband Brian Hill from a vintage dresser, which provides service as a storage unit, a kitchen surface space, and even a table on which to enjoy your home-cooked meals, can make your home into a swiss army space!

Partitions like the vintage door room-dividers made here to order, can be used however you like, providing more space to hang paintings, privacy in study and changing areas, or just something to break up the space, which is an important factor when residing in limited quarters. There's only a short period of time in most peoples lives where living in a dorm room is appealing, and as adults, most of us can say those days are behind us.

Next comes styling, wherein storage is king! Every space should be utilized, and the challenge for the Mignonne crew, when re-vamping a small space, is to combine storage needs with the desire to minimize clutter and overpacking. In this space they utilized side-tables, shelving and vintage repurposed crates to optimize (and beautify) the storage capacity. They styled with the Mignonne touch, a bright and modern eclectic style, giving the small space some much needed vivacity. To get the full understanding of the project, I've included some before shots, take a look.

Johnelle ultimately executed her intent for the studio apartment, that being to break the space up into usage areas: living room, bedroom, and entryway, etc. By doing this she gave versatility and variety to what was, on its own, a stale living quarters, if not a great blank canvas.

INERTIA

IR: A body in motion stays in motion, and a body in rest stays in rest unless acted on by external force, or so Newton says. Change leads to inspiration, productivity, and a healthy lifestyle. We know the concept well.

Any interior designer will tell you how cathartic it can be to put new life into your surroundings, may it be at home or at work. It's the kick in the butt to get you moving, changing and growing.

Stagnation can be dangerously contagious, like mold in the fruit bowl. We like to live by this idea, by keeping things moving, literally and figuratively, the Mignonne team is a body in motion.

Decorating your space shouldn’t just be a reward for your success. The creation of a healthy living and working environment can be a tool for productivity. Think of your environment as an extension of your state of mind. They say that a clean, organized and lovely home leads to a clear mind, they don't mention the act of doing it is what really pushes you forward. The changes take place when you disrupt the norm, and stop stagnating.

IR: ...any color. Want to have some things painted but you don't really know where to start?

There are many methods to picking a color, but the method in discussion today is picking colors by scheme. And we are here to help you create a palette.

The images on top were some of the inspiration photos sent to us by a client of ours. With this starting off point, Johnelle created a concept and color palette just for her, in a range of rich, New Orleans blues. The upholstered chair and bedside table are just two examples of the collection we re-vamped, inspired by the monochrome and French Provincial, New Orleans style seen in the photos up top.

Want to get started yourself at home/ arrive prepared? Try using a color tool to pull colors from images that you love. There's an app for that! It's for the color challenged and it's called Adobe Küler. What it does is help pinpoint a few exact colors in an image, arranging them neatly in a palette for you, on the go. Narrowing your color scheme can open your eyes to color ideas you hadn't thought of, and help you get the ball rolling with project and renovation ideas. During this stage of the process, you've got nothing to lose, so play around!

IR: At Mignonne we've always looked at fashion and décor as hand in hand. Ex Disney artist Justin Jorgenson articulated this sentiment perfectly in a recent presentation he gave on his dandy dress up event, Dapper Day. He described how dress and decorum can elevate one another, and about age old the tradition of dressing with to respect your surroundings.

When pondering this concept in respects to one’s decorum, it reminds one of how looking great can make one feel great as well, and we say the background setting makes all the difference. As our favorite Men’s Warehouse spokesperson likes to say about a great outfit “You’ll love the way you look, I guarantee it.” To those of us at Mignonne, 'the way you look' doesn't just pertain to the clothes on your back. The enjoyable challenge, as we see it, is in creating an environment that perpetuates good feelings and your own unique flare. Combing function with style is what great interior design is all about.

We love working with clients with interests and taste, helping them to accentuate their style, and get even more enjoyment out of seeing the pieces they love, living up to their full potential. Yes we have our look, and that's one of the things people return to us for, but we're not the center of our own universe. FLORA & FAUNA

IR: Not a new trend by any means, textiles featuring botanical (leaves, fruits, palm fronds etc.) and floral designs have seen many incarnations. Lets just call them florals for the sake of simplicity.
The beauty of nature is a subject well depicted in textiles throughout history. In the feminine and masculine camps alike. In the world of design today, we can see, the flowers are indeed blooming, so to speak.

Located above the Mignonne showroom is our upholstery and design workshop, the Fabric Room. There we house and curate a large assemblage of unique textiles, utilizing this collection in our interior design and custom upholstery endeavors. Our Fabric Room inventory includes a selection of vintage, modern, contemporary and indigenous textiles, including, but not limited to, some of our very favorite florals.

A few floral styles we love are: psychedelic or mod, flora and fauna, color block prints and traditional indigenous textiles like the quilted bedspread pictured above, thanks to REIF HAUS for the awesome example, and any vintage darling that catches the eye, like the vibrant upholstery on the funky modern chair in picture three, found on Flickr . All of which can be found living among our vintage and contemporary collections.

A pop of summer, like in the bar nook in the first picture, from the blog Sparkles and Pretending can keep in warm feelings all year long. And don't forget how well they pair, there's a floral to accompany just about any pattern or decor you like. In the second picture above, from HOUSE & GARDEN, they've even paired multiple different florals together, giving the room a fresh, spring garden feel.

Modern Interiors

LA: What are the first words that come to mind when you hear Mignonne Decor? Probably colorful, vintage, repurposed, bohemian and the like. We're known for giving new life to old bones, and we love doing it! But just like any artist that is continually changing and adapting to new concepts, Mignonne is too. Our interior design business is booming with new ideas, and right now we are totally digging modern interiors!

Shown in photo four (bottom right) is an in home interior design project we did recently for a client. Above the fireplace is a flat screen TV (!) that we customized a sculptural modern mirror cover for, to add depth and movement to the space. On either side of the mirrors are custom cabinets made with unstained white oak and modern pulls, with added speaker cloth to make the acoustics of the room equally as awesome as the modern aesthetic! Light a fire, put your feet up and turn up the Netflix. Am I right?

Photo one is a similar example of a modern cabinetry style and TV cover found on Lushhome. There are tons of artistic ways to keep the flatscreen from being the main attraction all the time. Just like Mignonne's example in photo four, the cover is attached on a modern unseen recessed track, making it convenient and easy to reveal whenever the situation arises.

The speaker cloth as part of the built in cabinetry in photo two adds a great modern look, tons of storage, and superior sound quality to this gorgeous room. We love that cabinetry is no longer limited to kitchens, but living and bedrooms too! This photo and similar cabinetry styles can be found at Dura Supreme Cabinetry.

The custom asymmetrical wooden handles shown in photo three are a perfect example of stylizing modern cabinetry in a a unique way that suits the space. These cabinets, found on remodelista.com, reside in a small, renovated 1920's prewar apartment in Brooklyn, New York. The designer kept the charm and complimented the space throughout the entire apartment by using only one paint color paired with natural wood. Talk about elegant.

African Mud Cloth

LA: Known in Malian culture as Bògòlanfini, or Bogolan, West African Mud Cloth is an ancient practice that dates back hundreds of years. Traditionally, men weave the handmade cotton fabric and women dye it with fermented mud. Because every piece is handmade, each textile is one of a kind. The painted symbols tell different stories with their arrangement, color and shape, not unlike ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics.

As makers that believe in handcrafted, one of a kind pieces, here at Mignonne we love the aesthetic that African Mud Cloth brings to our furniture! Displayed in Picture One is our 'MUD CLOTH' Chair, a 1920's antique slipper chair reupholstered with original African mud cloth, available now in our West Berkeley shop, Mignonne Decor.

In Picture Two, a reupholstered mud cloth chair spotted in the studio of woodworker (and maker of many things) Ariele Alasko, whom we adore! This is a stunning example of integrating traditional West African patterns with a simplistic, modern interior. Here, the mud cloth provides an earthy, natural look that is eye catching and unique.

THE CHESTERFIELD

IR: A recent arrival here at Mignonne is our lovely and comfortable, Chesterfield couch, and we'd love to see something great happen with it. A classic piece, complete with all-over tufts, this puppy is a star in the making, but don't take my word for it, just take a look at what can be done!

Shown here in four different upholstery ways, the Chesterfield couch is a classic that may be styled, and even upholstered with your own unique flare.

Classic in rustic leather, the Chesterfield couch, as you can see, can be just as at home in a mid century room like in Picture Two (found on No. 19 blog), as it is amongst the bohemian gothic decor of Picture Four (found on La Decorista blog).

And lastly, I'd like to talk about the shock wave of a couch in Picture Three, custom upholstered in a silver vinyl to awe and inspire. Not for the faint of heart, but certainly for the love of design, this couch turns a classic into a mid-century style futuristic (found on Svpply to accent their equally funky white bookshelf wall paper)

WOODEN INLAYS

IR: Wooden inlay work and other unique and precious details are something that at Mignonne, we scout for diligently, keeping an eye out for pieces that reflect skilled craftsmanship and sturdy construction, therefore reflecting quality, and value. We apply this to our workmanship as well. When redesigning a piece, we keep in mind what qualities it possesses that make it something worth re-vamping, and focus on playing those wonderful qualities up. It's important to know what aspects are better left alone, and what can be done to highlight those special details.

As most of us know, these little details can make us fall in love, with furniture that is, but the rough edges or dated style can hold us back from actualizing their potential. Some furniture looks dated by nature, but don't let that stop you from re-imagining it. Re-imagining is something we've been doing here at Mignonne Decor for years. There's no need to be hindered by your love of classic pieces, it's possible to modernize practically anything! Using your eye, you can find pieces you love, you may even have a few already. With the help of our skilled team they can be everything you imagined and more!

'VIENNA' coffee table and side tables.

We revamped this 1940's wooden inlay coffee table and side tables set, and only modifications we made to the inlay work was to sand off the areas that were too far gone to be saved, then we varnished up the rest.

The next step was to find a color that was modern and classic altogether. Marie (assistant furniture re-vamper here at Mignonne), after much deliberation, made the decision to mix a creamy pastel with a touch of green, resulting in a color similar to home made key lime pie. The color is so light that it's not accosting, but weird enough to have a funky edge! The color both complements the beauty of the woodwork while making the set look vibrant and incredibly unique.

Something that we must consider often here at Mignonne, is when to make a full transformation, and when to make subtle changes, as to not effect the integrity of what we're working with. Especially when it comes to furniture detailed with things like woodwork, inlays, veneers, and more.

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF SALVAGED DOORS

IR: We'd like to highlight the many uses of salvaged vintage and antique doors as a part of our Custom Build Services here at Mignonne, and show you what we can help you to achieve.

Vintage doors are a simple way to add that sought after vintage charm to your home. The plethora of applications makes them not just a one use item, no longer do they simply offer a barrier from one room to the next. Get rid of your flimsy Home Depot quick fix, and get real, with a solid, high quality vintage creation!

With years of in-home interior decorating and restoration experience, Mignonne has collected some of our favorite doors and used them for a variety of projects, we can help you do it too...

Right off the bat: vintage doors can be used in place of drab store bought ones, but that's certainly not the only possibility...doors can be transformed into head boards or room dividers, or more. To customize your own door project, first think of your needs and intentions. Maybe you need a facade to conceal storage?

This technique can be used for all sorts of places around the house (or apartment). And Mignonne can install the sliding track or any other door solutions!

We can also customized a headboard with one or more salvaged doors. The more doors the more grand the effect, here we have a pretty substantial headboard of two doors, found on Dreamy Whites Blog.

Dishfunctional Designs has highlighted a number of really awesome ideas to make use of old doors, but that's not the limit, if you can dream it up we can work together to make it happen!

FEATURE: BRIAN HILL CUSTOM CARPENTRY

IR: We've been collaborating with our lead carpenter, Brian Hill for a time now. We've put out some really great customized work with him so far, including, but not limited to: cabinetry built-in's for client's homes, custom stand-alone furniture, repurposed vintage furniture, and heavy duty repairs, reconstructions and restorations on shop and client pieces that stand the test of time in aesthetic and durability.

When redesigning and redecorating a space it's often hard to acquire exactly what it is you're looking for. We've had a lot of success in the past helping clients to tackle just that problem. With custom furniture you can be in control of small hard to fit spaces, and add a whole new functionality to an awkward one; for instance, this pitched-roof attic was converted into usable storage space with custom cabinetry.

Possibilities are endless when you begin thinking about customizing furniture for your home, and it can be nearly as overwhelming as the idea of building a home from the ground up. But more often than not, the fix for a space can fit your budget, transform your space, and be as simple as a built in breakfast nook like this one...

Why not use your things as tools for success? Start with a table under your favorite window, to eat breakfast in the best light of day, or a double sided desk, for you and another to work at together, even custom storage, built specifically with your needs and space in mind.

PATCHWORK AND PAINTS; THE HAND-WORKER'S CHAIR

So as some of you may know, we've done some pretty funky designs in the past, like our chairs and couches upholstered in blankets and rugs, as well as our patchwork style of upholstery which allows for the use of small amounts of fabric and salvaged materials. But when Mignonne Decor lead designer and owner, Johnelle Mancha decided to make a piece that really said something about the shop, she knew just what to do: design a chair upholstered in her old, paint spattered, work pants!

IR: Our 'PAINTER'S PANTS' shop chair is a statement unto its own, and we love how it not only shows what we can do, but also embodies the personality of the shop. This chair displays how we can make use of small our patchwork upholstering, as well making use of remnant materials. Made with scraps of paint spattered jeans (casualties of the job), Johnelle put together a design that not only gave her denim a third life, but also displayed some of the contemporary design ideas that make Mignonne what it is.

Often a sentimental value is attached to heirloom items, like the blankets and rugs you've inherited or acquired throughout the years. Everyone has a unique story to tell, and we have an interest in helping you to preserve the things you love.

When you upholster a piece in this unique style, you have an opportunity to tell a story, whether it be about your family's history, your interests and passions, or even your lost and forgotten loves, like Johnelle did with her beloved paint spattered pants. Without covering you with paint splatters of your own, she can tell say something about her process, her life, and what matters to her.

THE ART OF TEXTILES

IR: What most of us don't know about fabric could fill a library. But don't despair, there are some basic guidelines that we use in our work on an everyday basis. A little knowledge we can impart, that is of great use in our everyday decorating decisions.

There are many options when it comes to choosing the perfect material, such as texture, woven or knit, weight, rub count (essential for upholstery), and many other aspects in synthetic and natural fabrics alike. These are just a few ways that we make fabric decisions here at Mignonne. For instance, we must decide on solids or patterns, as this decision is a good jumping off point for the remainder of our aesthetic choices. A few basic choices about patterns, solids and more is what I'd like to talk about today...

There are many things to consider when styling with fabric. Some of the most important of these being the size of the space, the already existing aspects, and the atmosphere you'd like to achieve. For instance, a heavy load of pattern in a room will inevitably make a the space feel smaller, however a room with all solids and no texture variation, can feel cold.

When it comes to color, pop colors look better in large patterns or solids, whereas busy patterns, and lots of them, look better in softer neutrals like darks and pastels.

The 'BLACK ON BLACK' chair is an example of the use of small patterns. Upholstered in a small black herringbone pattern, which accents the shape of the chair while not overwhelming the design, this chair can act as a solid, while adding dimension!

Large patterns, on the other hand, are a versatile look when reupholstering a single piece of furniture, while still trying to influence the look of an entire room. Because of the bold look of large patterned upholstery, it can be a great solution to both an over patterned room or a room with too much solid.

The image above is of a client piece we did recently, you can see how great it looks with our 'BLACK ON BLACK' chair at the top, because their patterns won't compete. This mid century chair in a robins egg lattice pattern would perfectly accent a room with solids in most color schemes, but could just as easily live amongst other pattens.

Above you can see how Emerald Green Interiors, www.emeraldgreeninteriors.com, styled their large floral upholstery on a muted solid grey wall, with a complimentary solid orange throw blanket. It really makes that floral look smart, doesn't it?

And in a similar but more bohemian fashion, this patchwork couch seen on http://schneidermansfurniture.wordpress.com/2011/11/28/consider-a-patterned-sofa/ is an awesome example of how many patterns can go together when in a neutral setting, like when offset by solids.

Too many patterns can date a look, a busy look is generally associated with a stuffy, overly frilly decor. This is because to the eye, patterns can fill up a room, and this make any space look smaller. And in a small room too much pattern may even make the walls feel like their falling in on you. But don't be afraid of mixing patterns, it's fun and can make a room look modern, eclectic, and uniquely yours! It's not like styling an outfit, you have a whole room to work with with, levels, and layers and multiple surfaces. Mixing smaller quieter patterns, with bold bright, and larger patterns, can lighten the stuffy feel of a room, while still giving it a cozy warm atmosphere that a lot of pattern gives.

This bedroom by Max Rollitt, maxrollitt.com, is heavy on pattern. What makes it all so cohesive is the variation, and the subtle solids that make the beautiful patterns pop!

Not big into patterns? Too many solids can look staged and boring, even cold and uninviting. Sometimes, for those of us who are afraid of patterns (don't worry you're not alone) we can end up with a room that looks like a doctors office waiting room, and that's just no good. Always a fan of bold large prints, I will again suggest this to bring life into the room. While in a room with too many patterns, a large print can add variety and modernize the space. On the flip side, a chair with a large vintage Ikat or Kilim, or even a Mexican serape upholstery in a room dominated by solids, can add the necessary hook. Just make sure to pick a pattern you're absolutely in love with because it will be the feature of the room.

That brings me to the advantage of using vintage fabrics, especially in combination with contemporary styles. With you, we can create a piece that's one of a kind with vintage fabric, as well as add unique dimension to any atmosphere. In upholstering with remnants and recovered fabrics you're also making use of a material that's lost its home, repurposing and reusing, which is good for the environment, and perfect for achieving a stylish contemporary decor. There are so many patterns of yesteryear that are being imitated in textile design today, but there's just nothing like the real thing. Not to mention the differences in quality and color schemes. We have victorian, mid century modern, ethnic and indigenous designs, as well as much more of unmatchable style!

BLACK IS THE NEW BLACK

IR: In a true winter spirit, we're rolling out our newest settee, 'SMOKE' playing with some black on black, for a dark horse look in these dreary months. As the saying goes "*insert color here* is the new black!", well, this year, black "is the new black." In a world of color, black is sleek, sophisticated, and sultry.

When bombarded with aromas of potpourri and cashmere, daring is the scent of leather and tabac. Amidst the colors of the seasons, spring, summer,and fall, lie the rich depths of winter in blacks, browns and grays.

With that in mind, we're presenting some more masculine pieces this winter, and our star is the real and recycled leather 'SMOKE' settee...

Recycled leather allows for flexibility in a budget, significantly cutting the costs of material, as well as reducing waste.

This particular couch is from the late 1800's to the early 1910's, in addition to the quality of craftsmanship that entails, it also means it is unique in size. Because this settee was not made in an era of standardization it doesn't fall under a size category. Measuring in at 56" wide, 23 1/2" deep and 38 3/4" tall, it's small, but no love seat, nor is it a gargantuan couch. It's a great place to sit and talk.

To modernize a settee like this we take into account the original look, and the appropriations of that look throughout the years. Often details in a piece can date it, and because at Mignonne we aren't replicators or imitators, we look for ways to transform a forgotten item into a fresh, unique statement.

The details are lovely and delicate, so there's no need to accentuate the feminine aspects. Instead of remaining in line with the delicate theme its structure begs for, we balanced the delicacy of the settee with an added masculine side: the brutish, black, patchwork leather upholstery.

Often when we color block, it feels like a stark contrast is essential, but the contrast may be more rich, even more daring when it resides in the textures and the subtle hues. And as for the color, black on black is synonymous with high fashion, how do we know? We bet your grandma wouldn't do it!

With lots of people renovating antique homes and trying to keep original interiors, while not wanting to live in a replica of grandma's living room, they're looking for ways to make classic interiors and pieces new, modern and bold. This is achieved by honoring the shapes and the details of an antique, while taking artistic liberties with fabric, pattern, and mismatched decor. We're all about helping you do just that!
