Cyanotype is a slow, poetic photographic process that invites us to pause, observe, and work with light, time, and matter. An ancient way of writing with light.

In this course, cyanotype becomes more than a technique. It becomes a visual practice rooted in observation, materiality, and contemplation.

“In Exploring Cyanotype as a Visual Practice”, you are invited to work with botanicals, photographic images, textiles, and paper while learning both the technical foundations and the expressive possibilities of this legacy process. We will explore cyanotype as a language, moving between precision and chance, control and experimentation, allowing space for curiosity and discovery.

Throughout the course, I will guide you step by step through preparing your materials, understanding exposure, creating digital negatives, working with plants and images, toning, and experimenting with wet cyanotype techniques. Along the way, we will reflect on the history of cyanotype, its connection to nature, and how to develop a personal visual voice within this medium shaped by individual choices made during the cyanotype process.

This course is designed for creatives who are drawn to slow processes, tactile work, and meaningful image making. Whether you are new to cyanotype or looking to deepen your practice, you will leave with a clear technical foundation, a body of experimental work, and a renewed relationship with light, time, and material.

Meet Reyes

I am a Spanish visual artist working with both analog and digital processes, collage, and mixed media. My practice centers on portraiture as a space of identity, memory, and presence. I work intuitively, allowing materials, time, and chance to guide the process. Archival photographs, found documents, drawing, and painterly gesture coexist in my work, creating visual constructions that balance intimacy and distance, fragility and resilience. My portraits are not meant to describe a person, but to construct a visual presence. They explore how personal and collective histories surface through gesture, texture, and form. Cyanotype holds a special place in my practice. I am drawn to it as an ancient and almost magical way of writing with light, where chemistry, time, and nature collaborate in unpredictable ways. The moment of revelation, when the image emerges in water, continues to feel like a quiet act of wonder and transformation. I live and work between Spain and the UK, developing my work through independent practice, collaborative projects, and an ongoing exploration of material-based processes.

As design and creative processes have become more and more digital over the years, I’ve noticed an increasing value for using physical creative processes into my work. Sometimes a font will do the trick, but there’s nothing like the humanity and handmade touch that some real lettering will give to a design.

In this course, I’ll walk you basic lettering principles as well as the techniques I reach for most frequently to add handwritten elements to designs, and also to create handwritten fonts. From brush lettering to sketching to scribble-writing, you’ll learn how to get comfortable with different lettering tools that will help you create in your own style, no matter what level of experience you’re coming into this with.

From there, we’ll learn to digitize our lettering, and have some playtime where we just use different styles of lettering to create freely, from quotes to wedding signage to website headers/elements.

You’ll also learn how to easily create a handwritten font using Adobe Illustrator and Fontself!

Over the years, I’ve heard so many people say, “I’d love to create handlettering or a handwritten font, but my handwriting sucks,” or, “I could never create something like THAT, my handwriting looks like chicken scratch.”

But I will shout it from the mountaintops – IT DOESN’T MATTER! (Also, my handwriting is a MESS – hand lettering is so much more drawing than it is writing!)

Whatever you’re capable of creating can be used in absolutely beautiful and unique ways that make your work stand out, feel extremely special, and bring humanity back into digital designs.

Here, you’re invited to embrace the messiness of your handwriting or sketching, learn to allow the process to dictate what the end result looks like, and let go of any expectations of perfection.

So grab some paper and whatever tool you prefer to use, and let’s create some lettering!

Techniques Taught in this Course

Basics of lettering and type terminology and concepts

How changing different factors will affect your lettering style

Learn the basic things to keep in mind to help keep your lettering looking consistent

Introduction to different lettering tools

How to create sans serif lettering with a flat brush

How to create script lettering with a round brush

Using the scribble technique to sketch lettering with a pencil and pen

Building script letters with “fake calligraphy” techniques

Learn how to use “blocking” for mapping out lettering quotes

How to digitize your lettering

Using paint pens to create lettering on acrylic signage

Using crayons, pens, and other tools at-hand tools to create and digitize lettering

Digitizing lettering to create quotes, website headers/elements, invitations, and more

How to create a handwritten font using Adobe Illustrator and Fontself

Helene Schjerfbeck (1862–1946) was a Finnish modernist painter, celebrated as one of the most original voices in Nordic art history. She is a treasured icon in Finland and only recently has she begun to get recognition worldwide. Schjerfbeck’s career spanned over 60 years, with her painting style ranging from traditional realism to minimalist modernism. I was first drawn to her stunning and original portrait work but when I saw her still life work that is what I knew I wanted to study more and share with you. When I look at the progression of Helene’s art I see the editing out of everything that is not needed to showcase only what must remain.

Join me for a two part live Zoom art workshop where we will study the still life work of Helene Schjerfbeck. We will begin with a brief history of Helene and her work and then study her marks. We will do multiple studies in graphite and charcoal followed by works in pastel and oil pastels. Part two of the workshop will focus on creating gouache painting (feel free to use acrylics or watercolors too) of one of the still life references.

Have you ever looked at a painting of the sea and the movement within the work was so expressive that you could taste the saltwater on your face, feel the breeze whipping through your hair and smell the ocean air? That is the impact I feel when looking at graphite sketches, pastel works and oil paintings by Joan Eardley. Just as Joan often painted right at the shore and sometimes in the water (see the photo included), I believe that is why her work is so powerful and transfers so much emotion. We get to be a part of that moment too.

Join me for a two part live Zoom art workshop where we will study the work of Joan Eardley. We will focus on her landscapes of the fishing villages of Catterline and the North-East coast of Scotland.

We will begin with a brief history of Joan and her work and then study her marks. We will do multiple studies in graphite and charcoal followed by works in pastel. Part two of the workshop will focus on creating expressive paintings of the sea based upon our previous work. We will be guided the whole time by the work of Joan.

Joan created with oil paints, pastels, charcoals, watercolors, chalks, ink and even ballpoint pens. She also often included found objects (especially along the shore) into her work. I hope this gives you the freedom to use the supplies you have and to experiment with them throughout the workshop.

Welcome to a brand new series here on the blog! In this new series we will be invited to view the sketchbook of different artists. We hope this encourages you to create, play and to embrace the freedom that can come from exploring new ideas.

This month we are welcomed into the sketchbook of Auria Bohn. Auria is an American mixed media artist who has been living in Italy for nearly twenty years. She presently resides on Monte Morello, a small mountain just outside of Florence where she shares a 500 year-old stone farm house with her husband, two young, energetic boys, two black cats, wild cinghiale, an owl family and numerous geckos. Since moving to the countryside, she’s been rediscovering her artistic path – one that has led her through many twists and turns since her youth. Having been raised by parents that were both artists themselves, she grew up in an environment that nurtured and sparked her curiosity for the arts. Fresh sumi-e ink, wet oil paintings and wood smoke from raku ceramic firings were a part of her daily, family life. Presently in the thick of raising her own children in Italy, her creative journey has reemerged stronger than ever. Led by her curiosity and love of watercolors and inks, Auria has passed the last five years exploring the boundaries of these mediums and even making her own out of local plant species, vines, and rock samples she finds out her back door. Her mixed media pieces combine a variety of materials, many of them hand made in Italy – including vintage papers from the local antique market and metallic leaf manufactured by Giusto Manetti -a historic Italian family of guilders. Artmaking, simply put – has been her home away from home – a space that continues to connect her to her creative upbringing and the abundance of the natural world.
