Could You Go Months Without Washing Your Jeans?

I've read several articles about studies concluding that it is safe to either not wash your jeans ever, or to go months without doing so. The benefit most often sited is the water and energy savings and secondary may be the extended life of the jeans by reduced wear from washing and drying.

Melbourne University student Tullia Jack put together an experiment for her masters thesis using a team of 30 volunteers who agreed to wear a pair of jeans five days a week for three months without going anywhere near a washing machine. She sites the lack of unpleasant odor as proof that jeans don't need to be washed for months at a time. 'They just smell like people,' she told Australian website news.com.au.

In another oft sited study, Rachel McQueen, an assistant professor of human ecology at the University of Alberta with her student and raw denim fan Josh Le tested the number (and types) of microbes in his jeans after he'd worn them for 15 months straight without laundering. Then he washed and wore them for 13 days and they tested the microbial load again. The amount of bacteria after more than a year of wear versus just shy of two weeks were not all that different.

It may be true that you don't risk your health by not washing your jeans, and you might not even smell bad if you don't wash your jeans, but could you do it?

I think like most things in life the best answer is moderation. Go ahead and wash your jeans, but how often you do wash them depends on several factors. How often you bathe, your personal body odor level and whether they're stained or soiled. I don't wash my jeans after every wear unless they need it and I turn them inside out to reduce the wear to the fabric in the washer and dryer.

There are most likely a huge number of people who wash their jeans after every wear, and wouldn't feel comfortable doing otherwise. I get that, and while it may not be neccessary, it just feels good to put on clean clothes. Just keep in mind that Levi's did some research and found that making one pair of jeans uses up 919 gallons of water in its lifetime, which has three main phases: watering the cotton crop, washing the jeans after they're dyed to create that lived in look, and, lastly, laundering them (which Levi's says makes up 50 percent of the environmental impact).

That means that not only will reduced washings diminish the water used cleaning them, extending the life of the jeans also impacts the environment by not having to produce as many jeans. It all adds up, just cutting back on the number of washings a little bit can make a big difference.

Kristen Stewart may be dressed in expensive designer gowns and towering heels when on the red carpet, but in real life, K-Stew prefers to dress down in jeans, t-shirts and casual wear.

The Twilight actress and Robert Pattinson's girlfriend actually prefers vintage clothing to designer clothing if you can believe that. What Hollywood actress would wear second-hand clothes? Not many, that's for sure. Kristen Stewart, however, has a love for vintage and she isn't afraid to show it!

"I like fashion because it's part of my work. I dive into the new trends when I have to, but I'm more of jeans and t-shirt kind of girl," she said, adding that "in Los Angeles I like to go to vintage stores, I look for funny T-shirts. I'm very casual when I'm not working, but I think everybody should have their own style, even if they're going to the gym."

Many people don't have their own style. They just want to emulate their favorite celebrity, but Kristen has a point. Everyone is different so they should make themselves look like an individual not a fashion clone.

Is it obvious that Kristen Stewart isn't crazy about fashion like much of Hollywood? You rarely (if ever) see her out with bags upon bags of designer clothes so it's pretty easy to figure out that K-Stew is one down-to-earth girl!

How to Wear Denim in Summer

Denim is a staple in everyone's wardrobe, but how do you find that perfect pair of jeans and incorporate them into a summer wardrobe? We caught up with Diesel’s Erin Yefet to get the inside scoop of this season's hottest denim trends and how to wear them.

Trend Watch: Boho, Cropped Pants and Jeggings

The boho look is one of the hottest trends of the season, with celebrities like Vanessa Hudgens and Nicole Richie adopting the style, which also showed up in the summer collections of Marc by Marc Jacobs, Missoni, Chloé, Roberto Cavalli, Anna Sui, Jimmy Choo and Bottega Veneta. Yefet says the retro trend is something every girl can rock this summer. "Flared jeans have come back for spring/summer. [Try] ripped detailing and a nice light wash paired with a great summer top.”

Another warm weather trend is the cropped pant. With so much versatility, this look is a great option for girls on the go. “You can wear them casual with running shoes and you can also dress them up with heels and a jacket to go out at night,” Yefet explains. “The great thing about them is that they're versatile…you can wear them as a boyfriend fit or you can wear them fitted to your body."

Also, the jeggings trend shows no signs of slowing down. “Diesel has made an amazing style of jegging called the Livier,” says Yefer. “They are super stretchy with no front pockets. These give you the perfect butt, which is what we're all looking for. It has a nice lift, and the pockets are nicely placed on your butt."

Take Denim from Day to Night

Love wearing jeans during the daytime? Don’t assume you have to put them away when you’re heading for a night out on the town. Yefet suggests dressing up jeans with some key accessories.

"You can actually accessorize with denim pieces,” says Yeft. “[Cropped pants] with a jean jacket would be great; adding a denim purse would be great, too. Don't be afraid to wear denim with denim!"

Forget the "Canadian tuxedo"

Remember that golden rule about never pairing denim with denim? Throw it out. Yefet says layering denim on denim can look great – as long as you’re never mixing pieces in the same wash.

"You will want to wear [different washes] like a greyish denim jacket with a lighter denim on the bottom and then a dark denim blue bag, so it doesn't really look like you're overloaded in denim. It looks like you've contrasted everything properly and it all works together."

You can wear the latest fashion trends no matter your age.

Don't let your biological clock stop you from rocking skinny jeans, tank tops, asymmetrical shapes, white pants, ruffles and more.

There are rules, but not as many as you might think. It's more about finding wearable, modern clothes that fit your lifestyle and figure, says Kit Stewart, owner of Kit's Well-Heeled & Well-Dressed, a women's boutique in South Tampa.

"Once you hit 40, you've developed your own sense of style; you're more confident in who you are and how you dress," says Stewart, 62, who has owned and operated her boutique for more than 16 years. "You're more concerned about how to make the latest trends work for you. Older women want to be stylish, but they want to be comfortable, too."

Women in their 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond have never looked better, healthier or younger, she says. And they want clothing that reflects that.

"Women are taking better care of themselves," says Stewart, whose customers range in age from 18 to 80. "They want to dress sexy and fun, but it's more of an elegant, age-appropriate sexy. Where younger women's styles are all about trends, older women have been-there-done-that, and now they want their clothes to reflect how they look and feel about themselves. You just have to know what looks good on you and what doesn't."

It may seem as if your favorite stores are packed with teenage clothes, but you can still find fresh, current looks that work for you without making you look as though you raided your teenage daughter's closet.

Don't be afraid of this season's bold colors, Stewart says. Purples, electric blues, reds and yellows can add a pop of color to any neutral outfit. A bright bag, shoes or a belt can liven up your outfit and give it a younger feel. Wearing color close to your face can also make you look and feel younger.

And the over-40 set doesn't have to rule out skinny jeans. Yes, skinny jeans. Just go for a pair that's barely boot-cut and make sure they're a dark wash with no distressing, holes or blinged-out back pockets.

Look for jeans with built-in support, like "Hello Skinny," which are designed with special stitching and heavier denim to lift you up and suck you in in all the right places. Jeans that fall just below the natural waistline make the body look longer, Stewart says.

High-waisted pants are good for women over 40; but beware of the unflattering "mom jean" look, and the dreaded "muffin top," when belly fat spills over a too-snug waistband. Choose a pant with a comfort waist, tummy-control and stretch fabric that provides extra coverage, especially if you're wearing white.

"No one wants to wear white pants and show the world what they have on underneath," Stewart says.

This season's peasant skirts work well on women of all ages. Look for skirts with color and patterns that fall below the knee. Peasant skirts also can help camouflage lower-body issues with their fullness. And the longer length is great for women who don't want to show too much leg. Similarly, this year's trendy cropped pants are great for women who no longer want to wear shorts or capris.

Asymmetrical looks aren't just for young whippersnappers. The off-the-shoulder styles are sexy without being too suggestive. If you're feeling extra-daring, allow a decorative bra-strap to peak from beneath for a fun, sexy look.

Asymmetrical blouses also help hide problem areas around your midsection. Look for light, structured fabrics instead of those that cling.

"You don't have to show a lot of skin to be sexy," Stewart says. "Clothes should fit properly; not too tight and not baggy."

Layering is a good way to wear flirty tops. Pair a tank top with a scoop-neck top with ¾-inch sleeves, or, if you're no longer comfortable baring your arms, wear a sleeveless top under a crochet shrug or fitted jacket.

Accessories are a great way to make a statement. Bold, chunky jewelry, cocktail rings or layers of necklaces can express who you are. So long as the jewelry is light in weight, it can be ageless. But remember to keep your proportions in mind; the bigger the person, the bigger the jewelry.

"There really is no age limit for looking stylish," Stewart says. "Don't be afraid to try new things. Try the trends and adapt the ones that work best with your personality and body type. And above all, be confident."

As part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, this Wednesday, April 27, is Denim Day across the country. The movement comes from the infamous Italian case in 1999 in which an Italian court did not convict a rapist because the victim wore jeans. The judges ruled that because the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped remove them, thus implying consent. Female Italian elected officials responded in protest by wearing jeans and the case immediately sparked international outrage.

To commemorate the ruling, Los Angeles held its first Denim Day in 1999, according to DenimDayInLa.org.

“Denim Day is part of a national movement to raise awareness of sexual assault,” said Nevada First Lady Kathleen Sandoval in a letter to fellow Nevadans. “It’s time to get involved. We know how to help stop sexual assault. We just have to work together.”

Sandoval is a family and youth prevention program director at the Children’s Cabinet working with teens and families dealing with school truancy, mental health issues, homelessness, runaway and abused children and family violence prevention.

“One issue I hear far too much about is sexual assault,” Sandoval said. “Imagine the opportunity for heightened awareness if elected officials, constitutional officers, local school districts and you and your friends joined us.”

Sandoval said the Governor’s Office will be participating in the event, now in its 12th year, and asks the public to “join Brian and me in wearing denim to raise awareness of sexual assault.”

“Take this one day and join us in wearing denim to help raise awareness,” she said. “Together, we can speak for all of those who have been assaulted and those who haven’t, or can’t, speak of their assault.”

Cotton inflation means more skinny jeans.
To be sure, direr consequences will follow from record-high commodities prices. (Bread riots come to mind.) But way down the list, there’s this: Jeans are going to have to stay skinny at least a while longer.

We think of fashion as driven by fancy; even in “hemline theory,” which states that skirt lengths track economic health, it’s the ephemeral public mood that’s said to usher in minis with frisky stock prices and maxis with dropping indexes. But at the mass-market level, every garment is as much a product of a spreadsheet as the muse, and right now the former is showing cotton prices up 126 percent from last July. That translates to about a dollar more per raw pound—a jump of approximately $2.12 for a pair of dungarees. And prices are climbing so fast that factories in China are giving quotes valid for only three days. So even though some designers and magazine editors have been pushing for an antidote to skinny jeans—which were shrink-wrapping trend-conscious legs even before designer Nicolas Ghesquière sent models down the Balenciaga runway in veritable scuba gear in 2003—there’s an economic disincentive to adopt a wider-legged look. Denim manufacturers, able to pass on only so much of the cost to skittish shoppers, find themselves in the position of needing to maintain trends rather than prescribe them.

Indeed, in her factory, Aileen Dong of Advance Apparel International has noticed that jeans are getting even more svelte, and cotton pants more fitted. Kathleen Fasanella, a pattern-maker and the author of The Entrepreneur’s Guide to Sewn Product Manufacturing—considered a kind of industry “blue book”—has also noticed the phenomenon. “Not only will the ratios of fabric blends change, but less material will be used in general,” she says. Fasanella compares the situation to the forties, when wartime rationing limited the fabric for women’s dresses, yielding leaner silhouettes. Even the bikini, the original middle finger to modesty, can be traced to economy-driven design; with the U.S. government stipulating that the material used for women’s beachwear be reduced by 10 percent, manufacturers produced predecessors to the modern two-piece, coming out with swimsuits that for the first time revealed a peek of midriff. When the war ended and commodity restrictions were lifted, designers then gave us the quintessential corrective: the ostentatiously voluminous poodle skirt.

This time around, as the economy continues to wobble, “the skinny is definitely here to stay,” says James Chung, the owner and founder of James Jeans. “Because of smaller fabric usage, higher synthetic-fiber content, and lighter fabric weight, the argument is that skinny styles will have a longer contract extension.” The aesthetic, of course, has its detractors (including but not limited to Jay-Z, he who “can’t wear skinny jeans ’cause [his] knots don’t fit”). But if the fabric of our lives continues to get more costly, perhaps baggy clothing is to be the next status symbol, with those who can afford it flaunting their wealth through folds both figurative and literal.

Levi's pours less water into green jeans

NEW YORK – When Levi's washes its jeans, it's not to get them clean. It's to make them soft.

So who needs water?

The manufacturer began offering a denim collection last week that reduces the amount of water used in the finishing by an average of 11 gallons per pair. The company claims a total of 4 million gallons saved for its spring collection now in stores.

The denim is still "washed" with stones, but the water has been removed from the process, and the number of wet-washing cycles has been cut by combining steps.

The early reaction to the Waterless jeans, according to Erik Joule, senior vice president of merchandising and design, is, "What's the difference?"

That's exactly the point.

"I think anything that blends fashion without an altered look [and] with sustainability and social responsibility, it's a winner, but sometimes there's a tension between the sides."

Parent company Levi Strauss & Co. is using this launch as a starting point for a conversation with its consumers, manufacturers, retailers and even its competitors about doing business in a more eco-friendly way, Joule says. The hangtag that goes home with the jeans also encourages less washing at home, use of cold water and line drying.

A real greening of the industry – without the aesthetic change – could get people excited about buying new jeans, he adds.

There's an emphasis on Levi's men's product for now, partially because men tend to like a more rigid, dry hand on their denim than women – and that texture was easier to master with the drier process.

But development is under way for lighter, softer finishes, and the technology is being passed on to the Docker's brand to start work on khakis.

The Waterless project has already changed the culture in the company's headquarters in San Francisco, which has switched to low-flow faucets, for example. Personally, Joule says he keeps track of his own water use at home: no more running water when he's brushing his teeth.

A French company has found business success by blending high-tech fibres used in an ESA space mission with old-fashioned denim to create comfortable, stylish protective gear for bikers.

Like 75% of European motorcycle riders, Pierre-Henry Servajean was wearing regular jeans when he took a bad spill on his bike in 1995:

"I realised everything I had on my body was perfect - my helmet, gloves, jacket - except the jeans. I had suitable things for every part of my body, except my legs."

The realisation triggered a decade-long quest to find a fabric that combines the comfort and breathability of denim with the strength and abrasion resistance of protective gear like motorcycle leathers.

It ultimately led him to the founding of ESquad, a fashion label devoted to ultra-durable motorcycle jeans.

Pierre-Henry knew there were many fabrics that might fit part of the bill. Kevlar, for example, is legendarily tough.

But Kevlar has some major flaws when it comes to apparel. It doesn't 'breathe', in the woven form it is uncomfortable to wear and starts to disintegrate when it's exposed to the ultraviolet in sunlight.

To find a fibre that could beat Kevlar, Pierre-Henry had to go further afield. After extensive research, he lit upon a fibre known as 'ultra high molecular weight polyethylene' (UHMWPE).

It is a form of polyethylene, the world's most common plastic, but the fibres are twice as strong as Kevlar, and 10-100 times stronger than steel.

Held ESA satellite on 30 km tether UHMWPE is so strong yet so lightweight that in 2007 it was used to produce a very special line for the YES2 tether experiment that piggybacked on ESA's Foton-M3 microgravity mission.

Only half a millimetre thick, a 30 km-long line of UHMWPE fibres dangled a small reentry capsule in orbit, demonstrating that 'space mail' can be sent using a relatively simple and cheap mechanism.

By taking the same fibres and wrapping them in cotton, Pierre-Henry managed to create a fabric
that combines the qualities of jeans with the toughness and strength of UHMWPE: "In the core of the yarn, instead of cotton you have high-performance fibre.

Working with ESA's technology transfer broker in France, Nodal, Pierre-Henry's Armalith fabric is being highlighted by ESA as part of its Technology Transfer Programme to find use in other non-space sectors.

The fabric is a perfect combination of abrasion resistance, strength and comfort.

Tested to European standards, it measures up to motorcycle leather in terms of crash protection.

To demonstrate the fabric's strength, Pierre-Henry orchestrated a unique publicity stunt: he suspended a 2700 kg Hummer from a pair of the jeans.

The motorcycle community has gotten the message already: ESquad jeans are sold in motorcycle shops all over Europe, and have earned rave reviews from motorcycle magazines in France and Germany.

The next time you go shopping, don't be surprised to find a new collection from Levi's called the Waterless jeans. These jeans are just like the ordinary jeans except for the fact that they are made using less water reducing water consumption from 28% to 96%.

Now for some facts, on an average it takes about 42 litres of water to create a pair of jeans. The new jeans called the ‘Waterless jeans’ that the company would soon launch will use a new technique where the water consumption is reduced by 28% and for certain products water consumption is reduced by an amazing 96%.

According to Erik Joule, Sr. VP of Merchandising and design, Levi’s Brand “These waterless jeans have great finish and style, and they are made with a lot less water”.

The material used is the same but the processing part has changed with multiple wet cycle processes are now converted into a single wet process thereby reducing the number of washing machine cycles. Ozone processing into garment washing is now incorporated and water is removed from stone wash. All these methods help save a lot of water.

The company is in the process of implementing the waterless processing techniques to its supplier's factories worldwide.

The Waterless jeans are expected to be in market by January 2011. The waterless jeans collection includes the popular brands like the Levi’s 514 jeans, 511 jeans, 501 jeans and the trucker jacket.

The princess has partnered with Genetic Denim to design a limited-edition pair of jeans benefiting the World Childhood Foundation, the philanthropic organization founded by her mother, Queen Silvia of Sweden. For each pair of the Maria’s—named for a little girl helped by the foundation—$50 will be donated to the WCF. They’ll be available from January 30 to February 15 next year at Genetic Denim’s own site and international retailers. Each pair is stitched with a special the Maria’s label, and tagged with the original Maria’s story (below). It’s a sad one, but each purchase helps assure that it won’t be the same for the next little girl. That’s something to feel good about—and the fact that the chic stretch flares, in a standard and a dark indigo, are bang on trend is just icing on the cake.
