There seems to be a lot of discussion on color and fabric. The most accurate statement on this issue that I can make was there was a great variety of colors and fabrics.
2. I personally believe that much of the renowned butternut look was due to unstable dyes that faded quickly.
3. Many of the items that may have been gray quickly turned to shades of ranging from light tan through a brownish green. Some reenactors love the butternut look and that is perfectly ok, but I wouldn’t overdo it.
4. I try to include some gray in my uniform whether it is hat, jacket or pants. I feel like the all gray look or mostly gray look gives a better appearance than the all butternut look.
5. I recommend staying with a gray jacket and kepi. Add butternut pants. I feel kepis and jackets look better in gray. This is just my personal preference from the research I have done. There is no hard and fast rule about this.
6. For example, if you want to have a butternut jacket, I personally feel that a gray hat or pants goes well because it blends in better with the other reenactors in the line.
7. If you look through Troiani’s prints, which are closely, researched most of the men were in gray with some butternut items here and there.
8. This is one area where original photos do not do you much good since they are in black and white. Uniforms in museums are your best source. Troiani’s prints are reliable since he is considered to be one of the foremost experts in Civil War Uniforms.
9. In his paintings, the vast majority of soldiers were in gray. They tried to have gray uniforms as best they could. The color of the Confederate army was gray and they tried to achieve that look whenever possible.
10. But the shortage of dye and the instability of the dye was always a problem in keeping all uniforms gray. Natural dyes like sumac and walnut were relied on to some extent. Sumac for example starts out mostly gray and quickly turns to tan or brown like the hat shown above.

Caring For Your Leather Motorcycle Jackets

by: Lawerence Senff

A leather motorcycle jacket is the perfect choice for riding your motorcycle. It's also a long term investment so you should know about caring for your leather motorcycle jackets.
Leather is durable and designed to last a long time with very little effort. Here are some tips to keep that jacket looking great.
How much actual care your jacket will need will depend on how much abuse your jacket takes. How much time it is in the hot sun or how much rain you expose it to will play a role in how much conditioning you'll need to give your leather.
If your leather starts to look and feel dry it's time to condition it. Rain is really hard on leather because it pulls the moisture out of the skin. It's actually a good idea to condition your jacket every time you wear it in the rain.
There are two schools of thought for conditioning your jacket. Many prefer mink oil is a good choice. It waterproofs it by clogging the pores similar to the way Vaseline would. Eventually it will dry out the leather and it may even leave a whitish haze when it solidifies in the colder weather. You can also use a Lexol type leather conditioner for your jacket.
If you don't treat your jacket and protect it from UV rays it will fade over time. Black leather is really susceptible to fading. Use a product like Aerospace Protectant to prevent fading. These products also condition the leather. It's rather like a sunscreen for your leather jacket.
To keep your leather dry use a spray water repellent which will protect you in mild to moderate rain falls. However don't expect it to save you in a major down pour which will soak through the leather. When spraying make sure to spray evenly and let it completely dry, otherwise you will get horrible lines in the leather.
Besides treating your leather jacket you should wipe it down with a damp cloth regularly. This will remove any surface dirt. When you are storing it you need to make sure that there is room all around it so it can breathe otherwise it may dry out.
Whenever you are using any of these cleaners or protectants you need to make sure the room is properly vented.
Never use hair gels or sprays or colognes or perfumes near your jacket. In fact avoid the use of any sprays near it.
If your coat gets wet while you are out then hang to dry where it can breathe but not directly near any heat. If your jacket develops a wrinkle just use a towel and your iron to remove it.
If you haven't yet purchased your jacket look for the best grade of leather you can afford. Always choose a full grain leather and settle for nothing less. It doesn't have to break the bank if you shop online.
Leather motorcycle jackets are as easy as any other leather product to care for and with a little TLC they'll last forever. What a great investment!

Where To Find Cheap Women’s Leather Jackets

by: Hannah Roberts

If you’ve ever priced women’s leather jackets, you know that they can sometimes run a little steep. While leather jackets provide a sleek and sexy look, many people just do not have the budget to pay retail prices. Luckily, there are several great options when looking to buy these hot fashion accessories. In this article, we’ll show you where to find cheap women’s leather jackets.
The first suggestion when looking for cheap women’s leather jackets may seem contradictory, but it isn’t. By catching leather retailers at just the right time, you can often save big money on overstocked merchandise. Wait a minute – didn’t we just establish that retail prices were too expensive? How can they possibly be described as cheap? The reason is that stores such as Wilson’s and the Gap often run clearance several times a year, most notably off-season. So, by shopping these outlets as the seasons change, you can catch some pretty incredible deals.
If clearance retail prices are still more than you are willing to shell out, you can always hit up off-price department stores such as T.J. Maxx. These types of stores carry brand name merchandise at savings of up to 70% off retail, enabling you to find cheap women’s leather jackets any time of the year.
Another great idea when looking for cheap women’s leather jackets is to try a tag sale or an estate sale. Many times people are willing to get rid of items at very low cost to you, just because they don’t have the room or need for them anymore. Most of these sales will be advertised daily (or weekly) in your local newspaper, and they will often have a comprehensive list of the items that are available.
Along the same lines, flea markets are also a great place to find just the right jacket for your style. By bringing a wide variety of merchants together, flea markets offer ridiculously low prices on thousands of different items, and they run at hours that are convenient for even the busiest of schedules.
Last, but certainly not least, the internet should be your first and final stop when looking for cheap women’s jackets. Websites like http://overstock.com offer brand name jackets by designers such as Kenneth Cole, Steve Madden, Versace, and Nine West at savings of up to 80%! The reason they can offer such great deals is that these items are either overproduced or discontinued, which means one thing. These companies want to get what they can for the product, even if it means taking a substantial loss. Another amazing resource on the internet is ebay. This auction site features hundreds of cheap women’s leather jackets that you can bid on for as little as you want to pay. If you win the auction, the jacket is yours for that price – no questions asked!
As you can see, there are many different options available where you can find cheap women’s leather jackets. The key is to be resourceful and stay within your budget until you find exactly the right fit. If you follow those guidelines, you will be turning heads in your new leather jacket before you know it.

Blazers – Traditional, practical and stylish jackets for all ages.

by: John Gibb
Blazers are a type of jacket that are commonly used for school uniforms. They are like a suit jacket but have patch pockets and metal shank buttons.
Blazers are usually tough and are found in a wide variety of colours. They are often a uniform item, for airlines, security, sports clubs and famously the traditional English school uniform. They have a history of use in sports, particularly rowing, which is one explanation of where they came from. The Cambridge University team reputedly used red jackets on their oarsmen, making them seem ‘ablaze’ on the water. Another nautical explanation is that the name comes from the captain of the ship HMS Blazer making his crew wear simple jackets in order to look smart for a visit from the Queen. He arranged short jackets with brass buttons, probably in navy blue although this is argues by historians. Some simply feel that the name comes from the practise of emblazoning a coat of arms or logo onto the breast of the jacket, especially in the case of schools or rowing clubs. The types of badges sewn to the jacket traditionally denote standing; a different colour or style for junior students, senior students, prefects, etc.
The blazer is still in use and enjoyed a brief revival recently. Primarily teenage alternative fashion embraced the blazer because of a mixture of retro, smart/casual and cheapness. Easy and cheap to find and buy, the blazer is durable and can be affixed with badges and sewn patches. The mixture of smart and casual makes them a popular choice for any age group, resulting in a more expensive brand of top quality blazers being available. A further reason for their longevity in the clothing market is fancy dress; as they are the staple of old fashioned schoolboy outfits commonly used in school themed clubs and parties.

How To Get The Coat Clutter Off The Floor And Unto Coat Racks

by: Mark Daniel

It is vital that you include with your house the addition of a coat rack. Typically a feature in restaurants and other commercial establishments, these utilitarian pieces of furniture can also aid the function of providing a different feel for the room. In many a house you will stumble across coats laying everywhere you walk in any room you stroll through – bedrooms, bathrooms and even living rooms. We as humans find the inexplicable urge to shed our skin in less than worthwhile places. It is effortless today to find a wall coat rack that meets the requirements of the theme you have for in your home. For any one person in this country there are many wall coat racks at hand and ready to put to use. These adaptable items can be found made from any material – polished wood, colorful plastics, or smooth stone. Coat racks can be procured in whatever design you like. Our 21st century coat racks are most often fabricated with soft metals, including an element of glass. Their design takes motivation from modernist art styles. The hooks are of a similar design, and tend to be similar in size and shape. This does not convey, however, that today’s coat racks are without their decorative elements. The glass plates you can find on some higher quality coat racks are made to hold hats, while still keeping a stylish feel. Superior cost racks are normally designed with everything from wood to metal and all kinds of plastics.Again and again you can find shapely and well-made mirror adornments giving them a newer more decorative look. Classic racks are renowned with home owners because they are decorative, functional, sturdy, and often quite varied. Mounted coat racks such as these can be found in several different colors, accomplished via the use of different paints and woods. If you want to fabricate your own coat rack, you can head to virtually any home development department store and paint them according to your taste. Some online enterprises will even create a personalized coat rack for you which could include your names or a special saying. A coat rack's customary size is critical to note. You must acquire a rack based on the size of the room it will be placed in, and of course the number of coats to be hooked onto it. Small closets and rooms profit from collapsible coat racks, such as plastic ones that fold into the wall when unused. The most renowned coat racks available are designed for medium sized rooms or entry ways. These are given more place and therefore can be more decorative. Above the coat rack you can discover the expected storage space which can be found in many kinds. Sometimes it is “cubby hole” cube spaces to keep hats usually located right above the hooks. Large rooms can sometimes comprise of coat racks spanning an entire wall with various places to store implements and clothing. Racks such as these are designed almost entirely for churches, schools, and business complexes. A coat rack's frame can tell a lot about the owner, whether it be in the shape of a dart-board, decorated with polka dots or covered with professional sports team insignias. This can allows for the decor target one has while preserving the identity of the person owning it. A person can also buy a coat racks with custom glass etching mirrors. These mirrors can have etchings of wildlife or can be personalized with names and a wedding date. Coat racks are a very important and useful component of modern living. Breeders can relate to this issue the most; after all, who doesn't want the colors to adhere and be consistent with the breed standards as much as possible? Shelties' coat colors, the topic of this article, genetically come in only two shades: black and brown. As expected many terms are used to denote the different shades of a sheltie. Sable shelties are brown or black, with coats that can either be yellowish then darkening to mahogany. Darker ones appear so, due to black “guard” hairs dotting the brown. Some sables have a red cast to their coats, which explains the term “red sables.” White markings will vary in terms of prominence; sometimes, they are almost unnoticeable. The AKC rules that Sables are sables with a bit of white, black or red cast. Black shelties are registered as tri-colors in case of tan and white shades, or bi-blacks in case they are marked with white alone. “Rusting” is a term for black shelties with a coppery cast to their coat. While rusting is frowned upon in the show ring, this has no impact whatsoever on the nature of the dog as pets. Blue merles are genetically black, but their color has been affected by the merling gene. The result is that the dog looks silver and black, with black patches too. These dogs also have blue or brown eyes (or one of each), or merle eyes, which can either be brown or blue. Fortunately, merle eyes are not the sign of any lurking vision issue. In the case of a white sheltie, the dog can be called color-headed white. The extent of this “white factor” will decide the Irish markings, which are remembered as the colors of Lassie, but are not needed for show. The factor can be so extensive sometimes, that a dog only has color on its back, or only has a few patches of color. While the AKC currently is not in favor of any show sheltie that is more than 50% white, color-headed whites are nevertheless perfect for non-AKC shows, as pets or as obedience dogs. Merle-merle breedings result to white “double” merles. This type has a great deal of white on its head as well as its body. They are not recommended as pets, given the risk of heart problems, and the risk of blindness (unless there is a patch over an eye) or of deafness (unless a patch covers an ear). Aside from the double merle, shelties make excellent pets. Moreover, there does not seem to be any link with a dog's coat color and its degree of trainability. When it comes to demand, sables are popular with enthusiasts, but breed fanciers still go for blue merles and tri-colors.

Decorating With Coat Racks And Vintage Clothing For A Unique Accent To Your Home

by: Mark Scott
When most people think of coat racks, they think strictly of hanging coats, hats, and scarves. But coat racks can be a lot more than just a place to keep clutter off the floor. They can also provide you with an opportunity to display your own, unique decorating tastes.
One of my favorite ways to decorate with coat racks is to display vintage clothing on them. Wall-mounted coat racks work particularly well for displaying vintage hats and bonnets. And floor-mounted coat racks are a natural for cloaks, gowns, shawls and scarves.
Don't go cheap when using coat racks as a decorating accent. True, you can pick up a generic wall-mounted coat rack for under $10 and a floor-standing one for under $30. But if your goal is to create an eye-catching accent, don't expect a cheap one to have the effect you want.
Bent wood, rattan, wrought iron, or brass give you the best eye appeal in a floor-standing coat rack. And look for furniture-quality solid hardwood in wall-mounted coat racks. Don't settle for generic, dime-store coat hooks on your coat rack when you can easily combine the beauty of brass and porcelain or get the rustic strength of wrought iron.
You can find wall-mounted coat racks with rosemaling, or other styles of decorative painting. These always add to your accent, as do such features as a plate rack or decorative shelf on top that allows you to display other collectibles.
And a mirror, whether etched or plain, on your wall-mounted coat rack is always a big plus. Not only does it enhance the beauty of your accent, but it provides a much appreciated service to your guests of letting them check their appearance after coming in from outdoors.
As for finding vintage hats or clothing for your coat rack, here are some places to try.
Most larger cities have at least one vintage clothing store available. You can also find vintage clothing in many estate sales. And more and more second-hand stores gather vintage clothing donated to them into a special area.
Or you can look for reproduction vintage clothing and hats from merchants who specialize in supplying the participants of living history events with clothing and items from daily life of the eras these participants portray.
I've found Renaissance festivals and Civil War Reenactments to be especially rich sources of quality reproduction vintage clothing (and many other interesting items useful for decorating). Both events attract a large number or merchants who specialize in reproduction vintage clothing and other items of those times. And you can find many of these merchants on the Internet, as well.
Be aware, though, that while you can usually find a greater variety of items through these merchants in brand new condition, the prices for reproductions can be expensive because of the amount of labor involved in faithfully reproducing construction techniques from a pre-mass production era.
In looking for vintage hats to display on a wall-mounted coat rack, you can either go for a single era, or go eclectic with vintage hats from a number of eras and styles. And don't forget the eye appeal of including one hat in your collection that drapes a ribbon down beneath. Or consider dangling a vintage umbrella or cane from one hook to create various lengths of items hung from your coat rack.
And the hats you use don't necessarily need to be formal. Some of the most effective hats I've found for decorating have been the well-worn, but extremely unique, vintage hats of everyday laborers.
For a floor-standing coat rack, avoid reproduction or vintage clothing that really needs a hanger for it to look its best. Look instead for drapey items such as cloaks, gowns, shawls, and scarves. Experiment with interweaving a colorful scarf or shawl among dark and elegant formal wear.
Or try hanging a coat or gown by the shoulder instead of by the collar for a casual, asymmetrical look. Include a vintage purse. Or, depending on the effect you want to create, consider the effect that draping some vintage silk stockings or lingerie could add to the accent you create.
The options are endless when it comes to combining coat racks and vintage clothing. Just use a quality coat rack that does justice to what you display and let your imagination, and your decorating taste, be your guide in selecting items to display on it.

The Bum's Jacket

by: Slyvester Dudetown

I saw the dirty old jacket lying on the floor of the train and I knew I had to act fast. Time was a factor, and decisive action needed to be taken. The Eastbound LRT was stopped at a station. I was standing in the area near the door when I saw a bum's jacket drop to the floor unbeknownst to him, then he made his way towards the exit. Now I don't use the word bum here to be derogatory in any sense. I simply mean to say that he was a homeless man. I could tell by his limping gait, slumpy posture, tattered clothes, and the faint odour that trailed behind him. He was short, middle-aged, and had a scruffy beard. The man clearly needed his jacket for the long Canadian winter months that lie ahead. Being a good samaritan, I retrieved it from the floor and called out: "Sir, you dropped your jacket". Note the use of "sir". It's a polite way of addressing a man older than yourself, bum or otherwise. The man did not hear me, and made his way out the exit. I followed him to the door, his dirty old sport jacket in hand, with the intention of returning to him one of his only possessions. I was confronted at the door by a large group of people trying to board the LRT, and standing in the doorway put me in their way. I was faced with a dilemma: should I get off at this stop and bring my coat to this man, possibly missing the train and being forced to wait for the next one? If I didn't make this kind gesture, the man would not be reunited with his precious jacket, and I would be consumed with guilt. I think that if it were an attractive girl who dropped her coat I wouldn't hesitate to exit the train and return it to her in a somewhat heroic fashion. Maybe, after some awkward small talk I could work up the courage to ask her for her phone number. A few dates later we would then joke that fate led her to drop it, for had she not, we never would have met. The reality of the situation was different. I was determined to return the jacket to its owner without disembarking from the LRT. From the doorway of the train I could see him stagger away, coatless, but I couldn't get his attention. It was then that it occurred to me: I could throw the jacket at him. But maybe, I thought, there is some unwritten social code that says you shouldn't throw a person's jacket on the ground. The bum may not be aware that I picked the coat up off the floor of the train in the first place, and hadn't found it on, say, a seat instead. Had it come to this? Was there no other alternative? I was playing out the potential scenarios in my mind. The man could become enraged by my actions and come towards me screaming, perhaps drunk, schizophrenic even, and flailing his arms about like some kind of damaged blender. "Just because I'm a dirty bum ya think ya can just throw my coat on the ground, huh, college boy? I'm a human being too! You can go to hell and die!!" Curious onlookers would begin forming a semicircle around us, watching this angry man explode at me with rage. They would have no sympathy for me, especially those of whom saw me throw his coat on the ground. I would become the object of the collective scorn of my fellow passengers. While reasonable to myself, my actions would be difficult to explain in so short a time. They would think I'm some insensitive, classist jerk, who gets kicks from treating a desperate man like an animal. My heart would turn bitter and I would vow never to help a stranger again. The commuters trying to board the train were clearly unaware of the severity of my situation. They had jobs to get to and I stood in their way. My mind was made up. I crumpled his coat into a something of a ball shape to maximize its throwability. Then I launched it towards the man's feet, not directly at them, but close behind. "Here's your coat!" I yelled. The die was cast. My fate hung in the air, out of my hands, not unlike the grungy jacket. There is no going back now. What's done is done. Hearing the "flomf" that a coat makes when it hits the ground, the bum turned around and picked it up, his eyes growing wide and thankful. "Thank you!" he called out to me, a toothless grin on his withered face. I did the right thing. I couldn't help but feel a little smug for the rest of the train ride. An elderly Asian woman who saw me pick up his coat and throw it gave me a smile of deep approval, seeming to share my belief that any man -- bum or otherwise -- deserves to have his dropped jacket returned to him in the manner most efficient, up to and including catapulting it in their general direction. I felt proud to have explored the line of socioeconomic boundaries in interhuman protocol, and to have thrown a jacket across it.

Life Jackets – They’re Not Just for Kids

by: Frank McGoldrick
About twelve years ago, my wife and I were on our honeymoon in Maui. Maui was beautiful and we had a blast touring the island. During our trip, we chartered a sailing cruise and tried snorkeling for the first time. The cruise operator gave us the option of using a life jacket to snorkel, but the majority of us (including me) chose to snorkel without a life jacket. At first I was a little freaked out when I jumped in the water - I thought I was going to have to tread water the whole time. But after I relaxed, I realized I could float pretty easily in the salt water. Plus, we were snorkeling in a protected reef and the water was pretty calm. We loved it. After hours of snorkeling we were hooked. We were ready for our next snorkeling adventure. The following day my wife and I were anxious to try snorkeling again. While walking on the beach, we found a vendor who was renting snorkeling gear. Again, we had the option of renting a life jacket, but we passed. We were only planning on snorkeling on the beach in front of our hotel. We weren’t planning on swimming out very far so we felt we were pretty safe. We started snorkeling and it was great. But we weren’t seeing many fish so we decided to go out a little further. All of a sudden we realized something was wrong. My wife stuck her head out of the water and saw that we were being pulled out to the channel by the riptide. We were already 50 yards from the beach and we were getting farther and farther from land. My wife started swimming back to the beach but I wasn’t that good of a swimmer and started to freak out. Despite all of my swimming, I wasn’t getting anywhere. The riptide was too strong. Fortunately I saw a rock jetty about 25 yards to my left so I decided to make a run for it. After about ten minutes of hard swimming I made it to the jetty and was able to pull myself out of the ocean. I think back to that date and I realize I was lucky. If that jetty hadn’t been there, my wife would have been a widow. Or, if I had worn a life jacket, I would have had a better chance to be rescued. I think the problem sometimes is that we think wearing a life jacket isn’t cool. But we have to realize that water safety is more important than being cool. We think life jackets are just for kids, but they are for adults, too. Plus, it makes sense to set an example for our children. We now have two boys and we feel it is important to show them that wearing a life jacket is the right thing to do. Just like wearing a safety belt in a car or a biking helmet, life jackets shouldn’t be “just for kids”. They are for everyone. If you want more information on life jackets there are a couple of great websites out there. The first is the US Coast Guard boating safety website or USCGBoating.org. This site will help you chose the correct life jacket for your boating, fishing, sailing or kayaking trip. Also, another site is the National Safe Boating Council and its website, SafeBoatingCouncil.org. This site also can give you tips about recreation boat education and safety.

New Styles in Men’s Motorcycle Jackets and Biker Jackets

by: Aaron पीटर

The original is in and those who want to cling onto it can very well make their ultimate choice from the unlimited original men`s motorcycle jackets, women's motorcycle jackets and biker jackets for serious riders.
