Walt Disney Imagineers Drive Innovation Through Video Game Technology

Jonathan Ackley, project producer and creative director at Walt Disney Imagineering, began his career at LucasArts working on PC games like Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max Hit the Road and Curse of Monkey Island. He teamed up with Monkey Island co-lead Larry Ahern to create Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, an interactive role-playing card collecting game experience that uses motion sensor technology to tell an original animated tale throughout kiosks at the park.

“Sometimes you just kind of get hit by lightening,” said Ackley. “I was looking for what a new project could be in the theme park after Kim Possible, and was going over various different game mechanics in video games that exist. I was trying to think, ‘Is there a way that I can express what people are doing with photons in the physical world?’ The idea of card game trading, magical gathering, Pokemon, and that kind of card trading, and said, ‘Yeah, that would be really interesting to do in the real world. What if those cards really could cast spells? What if we had Disney magic and Disney cards that could cast spells?’ From there, we sort of extrapolated out how we could do a full-length role-playing game in a theme park. That became Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom.”

Ackley’s currently working on a new A Pirate’s Adventure: Treasures of the Seven Seas in the Magic Kingdom’s Adventureland. The new game, which pushes the technology from Sorcerers even further, stars Captain Jack Sparrow and will open later this year.

At EPCOT in Disney World, there’s a brand new Test Track experience that features real video games. In fact, the entire ride has been redesigned to let guests explore a TRON-like world filled with blacks and neons (although it’s not officially a TRON ride). From the moment visitors enter the queue, they can design their own concept car using touch screen technology.

“All of us designers have grown up in the age of gaming, whether or not they game themselves, or are parents of gamers, so there’s a lot of influence in our culture now with gaming,” said David Hardeman from Walt Disney Imagineering Show Design and Production. “We play games on our phones and tablets, so we knew that that was an important part of entertaining our guests as they wait for attractions these days. At Test Track, we allow them to experience that first-hand through some of the latest touch screen technology that we have available to us.”

After designing a custom vehicle, guests can experience the ride and see their car in action. On the way out of the attraction, they can play their car on a table top multiplayer video game raceway.

“The virtual driving table has a lot of great elements to it,” said Hardeman. “You get the experience of actually driving your vehicle, which you don’t get on the attraction per se. You actually get to test it as though you were driving it around a race track and race against your fellow competitors as well and see how their designs are doing.”

Hardeman is a third generation Imagineer. He said that in the beginning the goal was to use technology to tell a story, but the technology was hidden. In the second generation, Imagineers started to talk a little bit about the Imagineering way and how they do things.

“Now technology is such an everyday part of our lives that we get the benefit of actually showing it off,” said Hardeman. “It’s a little easier in some respects because technology just offers up all kinds of new opportunities for us to use it in different ways.”

There’s an interesting video game story involving Toy Story Midway Mania, which is a 4D ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Disney World and at Disney California Adventure. The ride, which debuted in 2007, features over 150 HP Windows XP PCs. They power everything from the special effects, which include mist and water, to the 56 game screens that have different mini-games. It’s a 3D video game experience that sends guests on cars that stop at different points for virtual target practice. In 2009, Disney Interactive and High Voltage Studios released an actual video game version of the ride for Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

Disney teamed up with Microsoft Studios in November 2011 for Disneyland Adventures, a Kinect-exclusive game for Xbox 360. The game blended Disney characters like Mickey and Minnie in an adventure that spanned a myriad of mini-games featuring attractions like the Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. It’s a way to avoid the lines in the park by flying through the world any time of the year.

Disney Imagineers are working on the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at the new Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom. It will be the culmination of the biggest expansion ever for the park when it opens in 2014. There’s brand new technology being employed to bring the new family coaster to life. The first-of-its-kind mine carts will sway to the left and right as it moves through the attraction. The ride will also feature an interactive queue area like Test Track and the new Dumbo attraction, which allows guests to be entertained while waiting for their turn. Even though the attraction is still well under construction, Imagineers have been riding it virtually for years now in a 3D virtual reality cave in California.

“The Cave is used in various phases of design for Imagineers to experience dimensionally what we’re trying to build,” said Mark Cohl, Walt Disney Imagineering Director and Project Manager for the Fantasyland Expansion. “It’s just not a 3D model. You physically can ride through it. We’ve been riding the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train for two years now. We’ve been testing it in the field, but really dimensionally we’re jumping into the Cave to experience it as our guests will.”

Jedi Tips for Disney Trips: Dining at Disney's Helpful Hints for Getting Reservations Your Favorite Disney Restaurants

My wife and I at the California Grill, a very popular Walt Disney World restaurant.

One of the most challenging parts of planning your trip to the Disney Parks, especially Walt Disney World, is making reservations for your table service meals. The internet has made finding food and restaurant reviews very accessible making "stars" out of restaurants that once upon a time were hidden gems.

One of my favorite sites, Dining at Disney, has posted some great tips for you to keep in mind as you make those Advance Dining Reservations (ADRs).

Nearly every Disney World restaurant is available to book 180 days in advance. Reservations start online and by calling (407) WDW-DINE at 6 am EST. If you’ve booked your vacation more six months out you’ve got some time to decide where you want to eat, and have the advantage of booking exactly at the 180 day mark. We recommend using an online calculator (like Calculator Soup)to determine your date.

Animated Short "The Blue Umbrella" Opens for Disney-Pixar's "Monsters University"

Opening in theaters in front of “Monsters University” is Disney•Pixar’s short film “The Blue Umbrella.” Directed by Saschka Unseld and produced by Marc Greenberg, the short features a score by composer Jon Brion, with vocals by singer/songwriter Sarah Jaffe (“The Body Wins,” “Suburban Nature”).

The director was listening to Jaffe’s music when he began work on the short. “There’s such an intimacy to her sound that touches you right at the core,” Unseld said. “I always thought hers would be the perfect voice to make people care deeply about a love story between two umbrellas.”

Brion, whose credits include “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “Punch Drunk Love,” created a score that sublimely supports the wide-ranging emotional undertones of the short.

“You can see how Saschka sees things,” said Jaffe. “Everything has this life of its own. Objects in our everyday life are characters too. It’s really beautiful.”

It is just another evening commute until the rain starts to fall, and the city comes alive to the sound of dripping rain pipes, whistling awnings and gurgling gutters. Randy Newman Talks About Disney-Pixar's "Monsters University" Soundtrack - Pre-Order Details

Oscar®- Grammy®- and Emmy®-winning composer/songwriter Randy Newman is back, marking his seventh Disney•Pixar film. The 20-time Oscar nominee’s wins include “If I Didn’t Have You” for “Monsters, Inc.” and “We Belong Together” for “Toy Story 3.” The recently inducted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member created a full Alma Mater titled “Monsters University,” establishing a recurring collegiate theme. “We recruited the team at Pixar Canada to record the Alma Mater,” said Scanlon. “We needed a giant crowd of crazy monster students to be singing it and the Canada team was great for this—the end result is sort of perfectly ‘off.’ Actually, the first time we recorded it, it was really good. I had to say, ‘Guys, these are college students at a sporting event, let’s mess it up a little bit.’”

Newman added a unique flair to his score, calling on renowned international drum corps The Blue Devils to contribute a definitively collegiate sound. The composer also incorporated concert band music to exemplify the feeling of being in school. In fact, said Newman, “There’s a little bit of Brahms’ ‘Academic Festival Overture’ when Mike is riding the pig. I like to think Brahms would be extremely flattered by his inclusion in the score.”

The score—recorded with a 112-piece orchestra—features a few character themes, including an accordion tune to help illustrate the less-than-cool status of the Oozma Kappa fraternity; a laidback shuffle to introduce Sulley; and the aspiring Scare student Mike Wazowski is often accompanied by a clarinet that, Newman notes, changes as Mike’s character arc evolves.

The “Monsters University” soundtrack, set for release from Walt Disney Records on June 18, 2013, is available for pre-order at Monsters University [CD + Weblink] On June 4, the label will release the “Roar” digital single, plus remixes by Style of Eye and Yogi. The album’s track listing follows.

Disney Parks Reveals New Resort-Inspired Merch

Over the past few years hardcore Disney Parks and Resorts fans have seen a decline in resort-specific merchandise, and in some cases haven't been able to locate anything other than a collector pin. Today Disney Parks' Steven Miller released information and images on an entirely new line of resort merchandise which is sure to delight collectors and guests!

Disney Design Group artist Tim Whalen who created the artwork for this new resort logo program says,

“We wanted a different point of view from the character artwork we introduced in spring 2012,” explained Tim. “Some time has passed since we had non-character resort themed merchandise for some of our most popular hotels. For this new program, I chose symbols or architectural details that represented each resort. In a way, the details are like characters that guests may immediately recognize when staying at those specific hotels.”

The line includes your typical t-shirts, polos and hats as well as keychains, ale and shot glasses, bumper stickers and magnets. Be on the lookout for this gear coming soon to your favorite Disney resort!

Theme park operator is teaming up with Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO ) in introducing Vanilla South Pole Chill -- a vanilla-infused carbonated beverage -- that will only be available at the Freestyle self-serve fountains inside SeaWorld Orlando.

Islands of Adventure started the trend two years ago, introducing the wildly popular Butterbeer when its Harry Potter attraction opened. The beverage is essentially a butterscotch sweetened cream soda that is available chilled or frozen.

Comcast introduced Energon -- an orange-flavored energy drink -- when it opened Transformers at Universal Studios in California last year. The Florida park will get Energon when its Transformers ride opens next month.

Regional amusement park operators haven't been as ambitious, but isn't it just a matter of time? Building unique attractions have always created unique merchandising opportunities, but now there's a way to derive incremental revenue through signature beverages.

We live in the golden age where everyone's a mixologist. Why not spin the flavor wheel to create something distinctive, especially if you can get a beverage giant to play along?

Butterbeer has developed cult-like devotion, and the other beverages may stick in time. The exclusivity may not result in increased attendance. Would someone really pay $80 to visit a theme park just for a beverage that they can only get there? No. However, it definitely adds to the mystique of the experience, and that can only be a good thing.

No Summertime Blues with Walt Disney

It's summertime and the livin' is easy.

Walt Disney has its fair share of notable challenges looming across its divisions. Yes, the U.S. economy is reportedly getting better all the time, but are the improvements enough to help spur the company to enjoy a strong season at its theme parks and resorts?

ESPN remains a growth engine to envy. But what about the broadside threat of News Corp.'s Fox Sports 1 cable channel, which will launch on Aug. 17? Will it open with enough of a splash to take headlines -- and possibly advertising business -- away from The Worldwide Leader in Sports, as ESPN likes to call itself?

And will Walt Disney's movie business remain as strong as iron? Right now, this question appears to be the least of Walt Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger's worries. Iron Man 3 had a sensational domestic opening recently, boasting nearly $175 million. It generated the second-largest opening weekend in history, topped only by The Avengers -- another Walt Disney blockbuster. Iron Man 3 garnered more than $525 million outside the United States.

Walt Disney can also look forward to Thor: The Dark World in November, Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 2014, and The Avengers 2 in 2015.

Much of Walt Disney's near-term prospects, however, center on its sprawling theme parks business. Iger hinted on the May 7 earnings call that something big might be in the offing: "In addition to the Star Wars feature films that we've already talked about, we're also working on opportunities for television and our parks. It's still very early in the process."

Hmmm.

That could be a blockbuster in itself. A generation of nostalgic baby boomers would likely flock to a Star Wars theme park attraction, trying to relive the glorious times that they had following the 1977 release of the first Star Wars film.

In the most recent quarter, Walt Disney reported that its parks and resorts division had a strong three-month period, with revenue up 14% and operating income advancing by 73%. The gain in operating income came as a result of growth in domestic operations, thanks to higher attendance figures and guests spending more money at Walt Disney World and the Disneyland Resort.

Walt Disney executives had to feel encouraged by the title alone of media analyst Tony Wible's investment report for Janney Capital: "Disney Parks the Mouse's Powerhouse."

At such a time of economic uncertainty as this, Walt Disney will take any theme-park advantage it can get.

It's a good bet that the company will continue to rack up huge box-office results for its Avengers and Iron Man film franchises. In the entertainment industry, nothing quite succeeds like an established winner, and these two movie properties are as close to sure things as you're going to find in up-and-down Hollywood.

As successful as these franchises have been, Wall Street may reach a point eventually where it begins to take the films for granted and almost expect blockbusters every time out. This has more to do with Wall Street's invariable philosophy and mantra of "What have you done for me lately?"

But the theme parks are more quixotic and chancy. A sudden snap of bad weather could depress theme park attendance. A sharp downturn in the economy could keep Americans closer to home. High gas prices, likewise, could discourage families from going cross-country and keep them on staycations.

Walt Disney's theme park business is the joker in the deck because of the higher level of uncertainty than we see at ESPN or in its filmed entertainment division.

Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger has routinely received high marks from Wall Street because of his penchant for meeting investors' expectations -- and often outright exceeding them. The way Iger sees it, Walt Disney is holding a strong hand, even with the uncertainty of the theme park business.

Disney Research Builds Robot that takes Objects More Naturally

They may not make for the showiest videos, but some of the most interesting problems in robotics are to do with the subtleties of human interaction. Even something as apparently simple as receiving an object poses great difficulty, but it's a problem that will need to be solved before multipurpose robots are ready for the home. By building a database of captured human motion, Disney Research and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology are making strides towards building a robot that can take an object handed to it by a human.

Though one approach to the problem would be to use similar vision techniques employed by robots that can identify and grasp objects, an unnatural approach to snatching objects from a human may be disconcerting, and discourage people from accepting robots into their homes or workplaces. The goal of this research was to develop a robot that accepts objects much as a person would.

To do this, the researchers decided to arm the robot with foreknowledge of how humans give and receive objects. By motion-capturing (you know, leotards and ping pong balls) people passing objects to each other, they were able to build a database to which the robot can refer, identifying the sort of hand-off coming its way, and matching it with the most suitable response. In order to be both fast and adaptive, the researchers structured the database as a tree, clustering similar motions together so that the robot can home into a localized branch of the tree to find the appropriate match quickly and adapt on the fly.

This tree-like structure allows the robot to begin its movement as the person is handing off the object, a natural, familiar approach to taking something from someone. The robot is also able to put its hand into roughly the right place to receive the object.

As you can see from the video below, there's still work to do, as the giver still needs to place the object in the robots static hand. Building in finger motions may help with this final part of the trade. The researchers are also expanding the database to allow the robot to adapt to a greater variety of hand-offs.

The research was carried out by Katsu Yamane, Marcel Revfi, and Tamim Asfour, and written up in their paper, _Synthesizing Object Receiving Motions of Humanoid Robots with Human Motion Database_, which was nominated for a Best Cognitive Robotics Paper award at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation in Karlsruhe.

"Captain America 2" Scenes from filming in Cleveland

Filming has started in downtown Cleveland on the sequel to Captain America.

A chase scene and shootout were among the scenes being filmed on Rockwell Avenue including the body double for Samuel L. Jackson's character, Nick Fury. The film crew won't say for certain what stars are in town as of yet for the filming.

Throughout the weekend, crews closed several roads in preparation for production.

Now through May 25:

- Rockwell Avenue is closed between E. 9th Street and West Mall Drive. Suggested alternate route is Superior Avenue.

- E. 6th Street is closed between Superior Avenue and St. Clair. Suggested alternate route is E. 9th Street.

"Captain America: Winter Soldier" -- which is slated for nationwide release on April 4, 2014 -- will pick up where "The Avengers" left off as Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world.

The movie stars Chris Evans reprising his role as the title character, Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Robert Redford as Agent Alexander Pierce and Gary Shandling as Senator Stern.

The film will be directed by two Cleveland natives -- brothers Anthony and Joe Russo. Their credits include "Welcome to Collinwood," "Arrested Development" and "Community."

Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm and producer of Star Wars: Episode VII, will make her first Star Wars Celebration appearance in Essen this July. Expect to see Kennedy on the Celebration stage, talking with celebrity host Warwick Davis about her amazing career in the movie industry and her recent move to Lucasfilm. This will be a landmark experience for fans at Star Wars Celebration Europe.

Nominated for eight Academy Awards, Kennedy is one of the most successful and respected producers and executives in the film industry today. She joined Lucasfilm in 2012, personally selected by George Lucas to lead the company.

Kennedy has produced or executive produced over 60 films, which have collectively garnered 120 Academy Award nominations and 25 wins. Dave Filoni Reveals Details on New Animated Series "Star Wars Rebels" to Air on Disney XD Fall 2014

The word is out today over social media and Star Wars and Disney fans a like have been showing their excitement for the all-new animated series "Star Wars Rebels." The show will be set between the events of Episode III and IV and will be airing on Disney XD in the Fall of 2014!

The buzz started after Lucasfilm posted a press release and video of Dave Filoni, supervising director for "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" putting the Clone Wars series to bed. Parts of Clone Wars season six that had already been completed would be released as bonus content while Filoni and Lucasfilm Animation would be working on a new series. Then rumors of follow up series code named "Star Wars Reclamation" appeared on IMDB with hints of possible characters and story treatments. That was soon labeled as myth by Lucasfilm. Last week Dave Filoni, supervising director for "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" tweeted a sketch he did of a TIE Fighter. Now we get today's press release. It appears that Filoni tweeted the TIE Fighter from this film shoot!

Filoni talks about setting the series in the time between Star Wars Episodes III and IV.

Production has begun on Star Wars Rebels, an exciting, all-new animated television series based on one of the greatest entertainment franchises of all time. Scheduled to premiere in fall 2014 as a one-hour special telecast on Disney Channel, it will be followed by a series on Disney XD channels around the world.

Much of the art will be based on Ralph McQuarrie's concept art for Star Wars done in 3D!

Leading the development of the series is a creative team of exceptional talent. Screenwriter/producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class, Sherlock Holmes, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) is an executive producer on Star Wars Rebels and will write the premiere episode. He is joined by Dave Filoni as executive producer, who served as supervising director of the Emmy nominated Star Wars: The Clone Wars since 2008. Executive producer Greg Weisman brings with him a wealth of animation experience with credits such as Young Justice, The Spectacular Spider-Man and Gargoyles.

Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer, Disney Channels Worldwide, said, "The entire team at Lucasfilm has provided extraordinary creativity and innovation for over three decades, and we're thrilled to be bringing the expansive and imaginative world of Star Wars to Disney XD's viewers."

"I couldn't be more excited to explore new corners of the Star Wars universe," said Kathleen Kennedy, president, Lucasfilm. "I think Star Wars Rebels will capture the look, feel and fun that both kids and their parents love about Star Wars."

The action-filled series is set between the events of Episode III and IV -- an era spanning almost two decades never-before explored on-screen. Star Wars Rebels takes place in a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape. Details about the show are a closely guarded secret at this point.

Star Wars Rebels will be produced by Lucasfilm Animation, featuring many of the key talents that made Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Fans attending Star Wars Celebration Europe will be the first to get an exclusive look at the new series. Casting will be announced at a later date. Not only does Filoni have a killer office but we learned a lot about the new series. He did hinted at the fact the show may be in 3D using CGI. Would it be in the same style as "Clone Wars?" I also like the fact we know that some of his production crew will be returning to work on this series as well as all the other creative heavy hitters coming on board for this show.

YouTuber Chad Neidt has uploaded a ton one minute medleys of him and his trusty classical guitar that are all genius. But I have a question for Chad. Why record the medleys in your bedroom? If you can't move the computer might I suggest getting a backdrop?

Epcot's "Eat to the Beat" Artists Revealed - See the Latest Footage of All the Artists

Disney has just released the musical acts performing at this year’s Epcot International Food & Wine Festival's "Eat to the Beat" concert series taking place Sept. 27-Nov. 11.

This year several new bands have been added to the lineup including: The Go-Go’s, Edwin McCain, The Manhattan Transfer, Wilson Phillips, Spin Doctors and Christopher Cross.
