The History Of Jailbreak And Unlock. Who Will Be The First To Unlock iPhone 4?

When the original iPhone was released on June 29, 2007, the cat-and-mouse game between hackers and Apple had begun. Before the highly-anticipated launch, Apple had already announced on June 11 that year, that the iPhone will support only web-based applications, coupled with the fact that it will remain tethered exclusively to the AT&T network. These announcements were received with much resentment by the excited user community, since that meant slaughtering the true potential of Apple’s wonder-child. And hence the game started.

Just four days after the launch of the iPhone 2G, on July 3, 2007, DVD Jon bypassed the official activation procedure (through iTunes) and made the instructions publically available via the internet. Following suit, on July 10, the much-revered iPhone Dev-Team developed a partial unlock for the iPhone, allowing use of non-iPhone AT&T SIM cards with the device. Things began progressing.

On July 30, 2007, the first ever native, third party app was born; MobileTerminal, a terminal emulator application for the iPhone, had said hello to the world.

The month of August that year saw a rapid increase in hacking attempts, with British hackers especially keen on making the device work with non-AT&T SIMs, but the true breakthrough came on Aug. 24, when George Hotz (geohot) developed the first complete, hardware-based hack and unlock for his iPhone, and documented the procedure on his blog. This process got translated to many software-based unlocks, and we saw solutions like iPhoneSimFree, iUnlock, and AnySim (GUI based) surfacing rapidly, some free, some paid. Hackers eventually released a permanent jailbreaking tool for iPhone OS 1.0

With the release of firmware 1.1.1, Apple rendered many jailbroken devices useless. The iPod Touch 1st generation had also been released, and since it used the same firmware as the iPhone, it, too, was jailbroken using the same techniques.

On July 11, 2008, Apple released the iPhone 3G with firmware 2.0. July 20, 2008, the infamous Dev-Team released the great Pwnage tool (Mac only), offering the jailbreak in a GUI. The hacking game continued with iPod Touch 2G, and March 11, 2009 saw the release of redsn0w 0.1 (welcome Windows) from the Dev-Team, offering tethered jailbreak for iPod Touch 2G as well.

What had now begun was a chase for loopholes in Apple’s OS between the jailbreakers and Apple’s greatest minds. Hackers found and exploited loops, and Apple covered them up in their next OS release. In March 2009, Apple announced OS 3.0 for iPhones and iPod Touches, and three months later the Dev-Team released PwnageTool 3.0 and redsn0w 0.7.2, allowing jailbreak of both iPhone 2G and 3G, as well as iPod Touch running the new OS.

June through September 2009, Apple released not only the iPhone 3GS, but also the iPod Touch 3G and 2G MC models. The era also saw the OS going to version 3.1 (for which Dev-Team came up with Pwnage 3.1.3) and then to 3.1.2, for which the Dev-Team had no solution, and jailbreak community was left in the dark. All in all, it was ‘just another brick in the wall.’

On October 11, 2009, geohot again surfaced, ‘making it rain’ with his blackra1n tool, allowing jailbreak of all iPhones and iPod Touches upto 3GS and 3G, respectively, running firmware 3.1.2, although 3GS and iTouch 3G were tethered. Nov. 2, geohot updated blackra1n to RC3, adding the ability to tethered jailbreak iPod Touch 3G 8GB model, one that was using the latest bootrom. Hotz also released blacksn0w unlock for iPhone 3G and 3GS, capable of handling baseband 5.11.07.

At this point, it was expected that Apple would not release any new firmware update until the iPhone 4G, running OS 4.0, or maybe a new OS 3.2 would surface, at maximum. However, Feb. 2, 2010, out of the blue came firmware 3.1.3 upgrade, which not only closed the loophole used by blackra1n or redsn0w, but also upgraded the baseband to 05.12.01, which was unlockable by any means. Much speculation says that this release was intended only to force the jailbreak community to expose further known flaws in the OS, so that they can be patched before 4.0. However, if that was Apple’s intention, they failed miserably, since all the main players in jailbreak community refused to release any tool for this useless upgrade, and advised users to stick with 3.1.2.

Good signs began showing just one week after this release, when @sherif_hashem found the first hole in the new baseband, which he handed over to the dev-team. Shortly after, @geohot and @musclenerd too, claimed to have found two working loopholes. However, no release was announced to make sure Apple doesn’t get what it aimed for with this 3.1.3 OS. Dev-Team tweaked the pwnage tool and redsn0w to make them capable of jailbreaking iPhone and iPod Touch on 3.1.3, but 3GS and 3G Touch were still left without solutions. A new player also entered the jailbreak game, iH8sn0w, with his sn0wbreeze tool, which allowed iPhone (all) and iPod Touch (1G and 2G only) to be jailbroken with 3.1.3, but with older bootroms only. 3GS was still tethered.

In the current scenario, situations have changed from what they were when the original iPhone was first launched. The world saw the first hack coming right after four days of launch, and it was at the time when the understanding of the OS was not very thorough. Today, not only does the hacking community better understand this Apple’s marvel of engineering, but also has three working loopholes already in their pocket. The number of players have also increased; Dev-Team, GeoHot, iH8sn0w are among the key players. Then there is the Chronic Dev Team, who are reportedly working on a new jailbreak tool, Greenpois0n, which is being held back only to see the release of iPhone 4G and the new OS 4.0, and utilize the flaw in Apple’s software for this major release.

Keeping air cool in homes and offices this summer will be expensive--about 5 percent of the energy used in the United States each year goes to running air conditioners. But researchers at the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, CO, have come up with a new air-conditioner design that they say will dramatically increase efficiency and eliminate gases that contribute to global warming.

"The technology we have today is nearly a hundred years old," says Eric Kozubal, a senior engineer at NREL. Kozubal and colleagues have come up with an air conditioner that combines evaporative cooling with a water-absorbing material to provide cool, dry air while using up to 90 percent less energy. The desiccant-enhanced evaporative, or DEVap, air conditioner is meant to addresses the old complaint, "It's not the heat; it's the humidity," more efficiently.

Evaporative cooling--blowing air across a wet surface to promote evaporation--has long been used in so-called swamp coolers. A method called indirect evaporative cooling improves on this design, dividing air into two streams, which separated by a polymer membrane. Water is passed through one airstream, making it cooler and wetter; the cool air cools the membrane, which in turn cools the air on the other side without adding water.

But air can only hold so much water vapor, so in humid climates the effect is limited. On a 32 ºC day in Houston, Kozubal says, evaporative cooling may only bring the temperature down to about 27 ºC. Ideally, to provide a comfortable building, an air conditioner should cool air to 13 or 16 ºC.

NREL overcomes the humidity problem by adding another step, the use of a material known as a desiccant that absorbs moisture. NREL uses a liquid desiccant, a syrupy solution of lithium chloride or calcium chloride, about 44 percent salt by volume. In this setup, another membrane separates the desiccant from air traveling through a channel. The polymer membrane has pores about 1 micrometer to 3 micrometers in diameter, big enough that water vapor passes through easily while the salty liquid stays put. The membrane is also coated with a Teflon-like substance to repel liquid water. The desiccant pulls moisture from the airstream, leaving dry, warm air. Then it's back to indirect evaporative cooling: in a second channel, water evaporates to cool a secondary airstream, which in turn cools the first airstream, and out comes cool, dry air.

"I think it's very promising," says Anthony Jacobi, codirector of the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. "I don't believe the idea of integrating these technologies is very new. Doing it successfully may be."

Hashing Algorithm in Ancient Indian Music System Monday, May 28 2007

For those who are from an IT background hopefully you know what a hash means!! Here I present the first known hashing algorithm in the world, which of course is again from ancient India !! Well, we Indians are the world pioneers in Mathematics, as Einstein said ‘We owe a lot to the Indians who taught us how to count’

By the way, I did not discover this algorithm in ancient Indian texts. It is already a well known fact and I am just presenting it here.

OK, So let us refresh what a hash is

A hash is a one way representation of a text in the form of a unique number. The text might be a single word, or a sentence or an entire document! The hashing algorithm converts it into a unique number.

For ex: Say the text is ‘Gurudev’, then the hash of ‘Gurudev’ could be 16478.
OR Say the text is ‘I am an alien’, then the hash of it could be 52848.
A number could be similarly given for an entire paragraph, or a whole document!!

Given a hashing algorithm, the hash number for a given word, sentence, paragraph or document generated using that algorithm will always be the same.

Hashing techniques are used in all software security systems, search engines and hash constructs like HashTable, HashMap etc..

When I say hashing is one way, it means, it is not possible to guess the hashed word or sentence or paragraph or document using the number!! In other words reversing is not possible. Which is why hashing is used to store passwords in databases. So even if somebody takes control of your database, he/she will see only the numbers and cant derive the password out of it!

Even if you know the algorithm, its very difficult to get back the original text and you will have to use brute force method where you try calculating all possible combinations to get back the original text, and this requires a lot of computing power and is practically impossible!!

Hence hashing algorithms are also used in security systems and SSL to encrypt given data like passwords etc. Most popular hashing algorithms are MD5, SHA-1, etc. The entire security system in the IT world today relies on the fact that it is practically impossible with the current computing power available to get back the original text from a hash. Well, quantum computing might change this scenario in the future!

There are however rare collisions possible in hashing algorithms where two different set of text might end up with same hash number. But this is very rare depending on the algorithm, and the chances are like one in 2^60 possibilities etc.

Hashing algorithms are also used in search engines (of course including google) to make search faster. It is always faster to compare numbers than text!!

Coming back to ancient Indian classical music system, the carnatic system as we all know is the world’s most ancient and scientifically the most accurate music system. Hindustani music system is a derivative of carnatic system and is less sophisticated than carnatic. Many people prefer to learn Hindustani than carnatic because Hindustani is easier compared to Carnatic. However, Carnatic is still prevalent in the south Indian states.

Carnatic music system has 72 base ragas. Each raga in Indian music system depicts a mood. Some ragas are suitable to be played during sun rise, some during sunset, some produce a devotional feeling, some produce a romantic feeling, and so on… It is a common misconception that ragas are just a combination of specific notes. There are many other rules for a raga other than the notes specification, like which is a promiment note in that raga, which is a banned note for that raga, the identifier note sequence, etc

Just knowing the keys in a raga doesnt mean that one can claim that he/she knows that raga. Raga is much more than a technical rule! Western composers beware, dont fool people saying you have used a particular raga without knowing what it really is!

Coming back to base ragas in carnatic. Base ragas are the foundations of carnatic raga system and all other thousands of ragas are derived from these base ragas.

A base raga uses 7 major notes of an octave. Let us look at it in terms of a keyboard which will make things easier to understand. We know that an octave consists of 12 keys, i.e 7 white and 5 black.

In carnatic we need Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni to form a base raga. Base raga is also called a melakartha raga. So there are 72 Melakarthas in carnatic.

Sa and Pa are constants i.e they have no other possible keys in a raga. See image below. S is Sa and P is Pa

Then For ‘Ma’ we have the third black key and fourth white key. So in a raga either of them could be used as Ma.

For ‘Ri’ and ‘Ga’ we have 4 keys between Sa and Ma.
For ‘Dha’ and ‘Ni’ we have 4 keys after Pa.

Since Ga always comes after Ri, out of the four keys we have 6 possible combinations for Ri-Ga
Suppose the four keys are R1, R2(is same as G1), R3(is same as G2) and G3
Then the six possible combinations are
{R1,G1},{R1,G2},{R1,G3} ,{R2,G2},{R2,G3},{R3,G3}

Similarly for Ni and Dha we have 6 combinations.
{D1,N1},{D1,N2},{D1,N3} ,{D2,N2},{D2,N3},{D3,N3}

So we have 2 combinations for Ma, 6 for Ri-Ga, 6 for Dha-Ni
Totally we have 2x6x6 =72 possible combinations in carnatic system for the base (called Melakartha) ragas.

So each raga has its melakartha number which is 1-72, and then we have the raga name. This is where the hashing algorithm comes into picture.

The hashing algorithm used to name a carnatic raga is called ‘KaTaPaYaDi’ system and using this algorithm, just by knowing the raga name one can calculate the Melakartha number of that raga and all the 7 base keys used in that raga!

Here we present the KaTaPaYaDi system.
Each consonant of an Indian language is assigned a number in this Katapayadi system as follows:

क(Ka)=1 ख(Ka)=2 ग(Ga)=3 घ(Ga)=4 ज़(Gnya)=5 च(Cha)=6 छ(Cha)=7 ज(Ja)=8 झ(Ja)=9 अ(Nya)=0
ट(Ta)=1 ठ(Ta)=2 ड(Da)=3 ढ(Da)=4 ण(Na)=5 त(Tha)=6 थ(Tha)=7 द(Dha)=8 ध(Dha)=9 न(Na)=0
प(Pa) =1 फ(Pha)=2 ब(Ba)=3 भ(Bha)=4 म(Ma)=5
य(Ya)=1 र(Ra)=2 ल(La)=3 व(Va)=4 श(Sha)=5 ़़ष(Sha)=6 स(Sa)=7 ह(Ha)=8 ळ(La)=9

Now you can see why this system is called Katapayadi. Ka=Ta=Pa=Ya=1

Now let us get directly into the Katapayadi hashing algorithm for ragas.

All we need is the first two consonants of the raga name to find the raga number and its keys. NOTE: Any consonant not attached to a vowel has to be ignored.

The steps involved are as follows. Say A and B are the first two consonants in the raga name. Then we proceed as follows:

Step 1: Get the Corresponding number for A and B from the above table as [AB]

Step 2: Reverse this number and there we are. We have got the raga number now!!!

Step 3: Note that we have two possible combinations for Ma i.e M1 and M2. So Melakartha is designed in such a way that all first 36 ragas use M1 and all 37-72 ragas use M2. So, if the Raga number we got in Step 2 is greater than 36 then Ma=M2 else Ma=m1

Step 4: Now we need to find the RG and DN combinations of the Raga. So we have a list of possible combinations for this as
{R1,G1},{R1,G2},{R1,G3} ,{R2,G2},{R2,G3},{R3,G3}
and
{D1,N1},{D1,N2},{D1,N3} ,{D2,N2},{D2,N3},{D3,N3}
Now divide the Raga Number by 6 (Since we have 6 possible combinations)

Step 5: If the remainder is zero:
then DN={D3N3} and Quotient number gives the RG combination number (like if quotient=2 then RG={R1,G2})

Step 6: If the remainder is non zero:
then remainder gives DN combination number and quotient+1 gives the RG combination number

As simple as that!!!

Now let us consider an example:
Consider MayaMalavaGowla Raga – Let us find its Raga Number and all Keys

We have A=Ma and B=Ya
So by looking at the above KaTaPaYaDi table we have A=5 and B=1
So the raga number is 15 and Ma=M1 (Since 15<37)!
Then we divide 15 by 6 we get quotient=2 and remainder=3
Since remainder is non zero, we have DN set as {D1N3} and RG set as {R1G3}!

So MayaMalavaGowla = Sa R1 G3 M1 Pa D1 N3

Please note that the above hashing algorithm is not limited only to identifying ragas. It is a common algorithm across many sanskrit texts. When greeks and romans in the west were still wondering how to count using the unscientific roman numerals, Indians were already using hashing algorithms in their works!!

Note the Indian hashes are reversed numbers (from right to left, which is why we reversed it in Step 2 to get the original word) unlike the western hashes which are from left to right!

So if we have to hash TriShooL, we reverse hash it as 356 (not 653). This is natural because this is how we invented the place value system too. from right to left as units, tens, hundreds etc.. Western world failed to understand the basics of Indian mathematics when they learnt it from us, which is why vedic mathematics is faster than western math! Western world started developing generic formulae for calculations while Indian math has specific formulae depending on the type of calculations. So learning Indian math (vedic math) is difficult than western math, but solving problems using Indian math is more easier than using western math (in fact you dont need a pen and paper to solve most problems which is why vedic mathematics is also called mental mathematics!)

Facebook and Indians have a magnetic connection. Everyone in my family in India except my father—who, at 77, is entitled to his suspicions of the medium—is a Facebook user. Every single friend of mine in India—except for an eccentric Bengali writer who idolizes a 19th-century British viceroy, Lord Curzon, for which reason he cannot be said to have come to terms with the modern world—is a Facebook user.

Facebook “allows [Indians] to do two things they love: Tell everyone what they are doing; and stick their noses into other people’s business,” says Sree Sreenivasan.

Every single friend of mine of Indian origin, anywhere in the world, is a Facebook user. And a great number of my Facebook "friends" are Indians who, having read my journalism, or seen my name on a sibling's or (genuine) friend's page, have sought me out and "friended" me as a reflexive act of connection; and being of Indian origin myself, I've always found it infernally hard—if not virtually impossible—to say "no."

Two laddies from Nova Scotia had made a huge effort to be there and were great Leica fans, worked in a camera store, saved to have them and held Ernst on high for being a Leica user (although he used Nikons on his Marlboro shoots, when the chips were down).

About four days into the workshop, he finally maxxed out on the Leica adoration these kids displayed, and in the midst of a discussion, when one of them asked one more question aimed at establishing the superiority of Wetzlar, Ernst said, "Leica, schmeica. The camera doesn't make a bit of difference. All of them can record what you are seeing. But, you have to SEE."

Nobody talked about Leica, Nikon, Canon or any other brand of camera equipment for the rest of the workshop.

He also said, "Best wide-angle lens? 'Two steps backward' and 'look for the ah-ha'."

If James Cameron wanted to light up the internet by releasing footage from his upcoming film Avatar, he got his wish - just don't expect him to be glued to a computer screen, soaking up the online buzz.

The Titanic director has people to do that for him.

"I've had it kind of broken down for me, what people are talking about," Cameron said Friday.

"I know we have right now, historically, broken the record for the total number of downloads for the trailer."

The two-minute online trailer for the 3D science-fiction epic, which debuted on Thursday - and the unprecedented 16-minute previews shown in theatres worldwide Friday - inspired steady traffic on Twitter and Facebook.

Avatar tells the story of humans who travel to a distant planet and have their brains linked to cloned versions of a native species in order to explore the otherwise unsafe environment.

But Cameron, a champion of 3D technology and a pioneer of computer-generated effects in modern moviemaking, says he lacks certain social networking skills to take part.

"I don't even know how to Twitter," the 55-year-old filmmaker said in an interview Friday.

"I'm so unhip that it's tragic."

Unhip maybe, but forward-thinking enough to try the "crazy stunt" that he says he and his team came up with: Invite people to the movie theatre to watch 16 minutes of scenes for free. The footage was being shown Friday on 102 screens in the US and 342 screens internationally - 58 countries in all - to fans who scored free tickets online.

"And it's not even a continuous 16 minutes," Cameron said.

"There are a number of scenes, about three or four minutes apiece. And the idea was to let people come in and really sample the quality of the goods."

Multi Oscar-winning Cameron already knows how to make a splash on screen. Reactions to the mammoth marketing blitz were rolling in on the web, where Avatar was among the top topics on Twitter on Thursday.

Many were struck by its visual splendor, including Hong Kong moviegoer Jason Poon, who tweeted that it was "probably the best CG and 3-D I've ever seen".

James Hilder in London said it was "mega impressive".

One fan disappointed with the online trailer said seeing the extended preview in 3D changed his mind about the movie.

"It is essential that you watch it in IMAX 3D, or 3D," Manoj Patel wrote on the film's Facebook page.

"I just got back from watching the 15-minute footage, and I've got to say, my mouth was wide open all the way through."

Not all the early reactions were laudatory.

In Tel Aviv, Shay Ringel tweeted after a screening: "What was THAT?! ... Everyone walked out (scratching) their heads saying, 'Why are we here?"'

Studios usually closely guard footage of movies before their release, only occasionally offering glimpses to the public at special events.

One-Up One-Down

This is the name of a "Table Game" as explained by a friend.
Rather its a game when few friends are sitting around a table and have chosen their drinks. So its a drink-time game. (But one can play without drinks as well).
The bare minimum requirement of this game is atleast one person in the group should know this game very well.
So this one who knows the game is called a dealer. He/she will explain the game to others as...
There are only three options available to say.. "One-Up One-down", "Two-Up" & "Two-Down".
Every player has to choose and say one of these options but player must be observant while playing this game. Observing the dealer, will make one understand the secrete of the game. The dealer will be knowing the secret of the game and will inform the player whatever option he/she has chosen was the correct or wrong. If its wrong, then the player should have a sip of his drink and then the game will move ahead to the next player. The Dealer starts this game by saying one of the options and then the game continues with the player sitting at the left-hand side of the dealer.
If the player chooses the correct option, then the dealer informs him/her that the option chosen was correct. the every player has to understand the secret by himself/herself. and keep playing till everybody understands the game. :-)

The fun begins when some of the players understand the secrete and some don't understand it even if the whole drink is finished. :-p

The funniest thing is some smart people try to figure out the relation of choosing the option by calculating the number of times one choses that option, by making some of the drinks, finding out odds, and what not....
Please remember friends, its not at all related. (in reality its just a stupid funny game for mere enjoyment)

Well I actually don't wish to explain the secrete here... but can't resist stating it...
So here is the secret of the game.
"The option you choose is the exact position of your hands on the table or Off the table."

So this is it... try it and have fun.

Now I know the question in your mind is, have I really figured out this game or some body explained it to me?
Well I think, this is upto you to decide that.
The fact is I know the secrete...
I think, I forgot to mention a little secrete of mine, I to disguise (occasionally) while playing this game by choosing a wrong option... cause I never play as a dealer....
Shhhh..... Don't tell anybody that I know the secrete!!
