It is one thing to worry about the safety of your spouse who is serving in Iraq or Afghanistan.

It is another thing to be afraid that while he or she is gone, the bank will take away your house and your loved one will have nowhere to come home to.

Linda Kellam, 50, knows both those fears. Her husband James, 49, is serving in Afghanistan with the 1218 Transportation Unit of the Army National Guard, which is based in West Palm Beach.

By the time he was deployed July 8, they had both lost their jobs in layoffs. Then the bank tried to foreclose on their Greenacres condo. They became casualties of the mortgage crisis. More

After more than three years of a painful housing swoon, real estate experts predict that lower prices, attractive mortgage rates, and a tax perk from Uncle Sam will create the most vibrant spring home selling season in some time. "This is going to be probably the most pleasant experience for a home seller in the last four or five years," says Mike Larson of Weiss Research. "If you have been beating your head against a wall, this is going to feel a lot better." But even if the market does perk up, buyers are likely to retain the upper hand throughout 2010. So to help property owners get the best selling price they can—without burying themselves in expenses—U.S. News has created a list of 10 cheap ways to boost a home's sales price by spring. More

This article is likely to be quite controversial considering it's content and source. It is interesting to see how the world views our crisis. - JG

----

Samah El-Shahat, Al Jazeera's resident economist, will be writing a regular column analysing key elements that have contributed to the global financial downturn and its impact across the world.

America: A bank-owned state

In my last column I introduced the idea that America's handling of the financial crisis, and in particular the way it has refused to deal with the banks, is more in keeping with how an "emerging" economy might behave and act.

So this week, I will say that America has become a bank-owned state, allowing its banking oligarchs to suffocate the economy so they can survive at any price. More

The nation’s mobility rate fell last year to its lowest level since World War II, according to the latest census data. Growth is slowing in Sun Belt states and Northeastern states are holding on to more people. The current recession and lack of jobs are big factors, but the trend has been gaining force since the 1950s, when nearly one-fifth of all Americans moved every year.

Why are Americans becoming less nomadic? Greater labor mobility helps the economy, but are there other kinds of effects — negative or positive — related to a more rooted population? Is there an upside to more Americans staying closer to their hometowns? More

PMZ Real Estate

Wave of Bankruptcies Hits States Hammered by Housing Bust

Personal bankruptcies soared last year in Western states hit hardest by the real-estate bust.In states such as California, Arizona and Nevada, where housing prices soared and then collapsed during the past decade, consumer bankruptcy filings rose roughly twice as much as the national average increase of 32%. Homeowners fell behind on mortgages and could no longer tap into their home equity to pay down other debts.
"There's a close relationship between high levels of household debt, including mortgage debt, and bankruptcy filings," said Samuel J. Gerdano, executive director of the American Bankruptcy Institute, a research organization made up of attorneys, accountants and other bankruptcy professionals. "That...has been exacerbated by the bursting of the housing bubble." More
 PMZ Real Estate

Rhode Island Passes Foreclosure Information Bill

A substantial number of homeowners are still facing foreclosure, and some are often desperate for help but aren’t sure where to turn. On Tuesday, the Rhode Island General Assembly passed a new law requiring lenders to provide troubled homeowners with information about free mortgage counseling before they can begin any foreclosure process, overriding Governor Carcieri’s veto of the bill. The legislation will take effect 60 days from passage. Its purpose is to ensure that at-risk homeowners have access to all the resources and information available to them to prevent foreclosure, according to its sponsors, Sen. Elizabeth A. Crowley of Central Falls and Rep. David A. Segal of Providence, whose hometowns respectively had the highest and third-highest foreclosure rates in southern New England in 2008. More
 PMZ Real Estate

Look no further for signs of that moving target than this stately looking brick home in east Riverside County where the locks on the door are rusting and the torn sign in the front yard says – ‘foreclosure – must sell’.

“Count them out,” said Monica Frank who lives next door. She recalled the middle class family with four kids. “They were very stable. Until the husband (a civil engineer) lost his job. In 2007 they moved out in the middle of the night,” Frank said. “The place was rented then sold to another family in 2008. That family abandoned the home in November 2009.” More

The Two Sides of GMAC: Receiving Money and Forclosing Families

There was an interesting juxtaposition of front-page articles in the Dec. 31 Post. Page A1 contained an article about the federal government's providing an additional $3.8 billion to GMAC to keep it operating["U.S. to give $3.8 billion more in aid to GMAC"]. The front page of the Metro section had a news story featuring the struggle of a mother of five children to avoid losing her home to foreclosure ["Fighting the foreclosure tide"].

You guessed it, the mortgage lender that has started foreclosure on her mortgage is the same GMAC that is getting $3.8 billion in aid from the federal government. Yet the company can't seem to find a way to help this woman and her five children avoid becoming homeless. More

A federal judge this week tossed out a lawsuit by Baltimore against Wells Fargo, ruling that the city could not prove that the bank’s lending practices had resulted in broad damage to poor neighborhoods.

Baltimore officials have accused the bank of tipping hundreds of black homeowners into foreclosure by singling them out for high-interest subprime mortgages. More

The last time Oakdale residents and city officials began to meet to plan the city’s future, the U.S. Census had just released the city’s 1990 population figures. In the three years leading up to the adoption of the 1994 City of Oakdale general plan those numbers helped those planning future growth to estimate how, and where, the city should expand.

With 11,961 people in 1990, Oakdale was poised for growth. Looking back on a few of the newspaper articles appearing in The Oakdale Leader in January1994, it becomes obvious how some of the plans, such as the Bridle Ridge housing development, came about. Other plans involving the city expanding north of the Stanislaus River and the Highway 120 Bypass never came to fruition. And the jury is still out on yet other plans for commercial and retail centers in the west end of Oakdale. More

Imagine losing your home to foreclosure and then getting socked with a big tax bill. People who had their home foreclosed or sold as a "short sale" last year, could get an unpleasant surprise from their mortgage company.

Accountants are expecting a huge number of taxpayers to be hit with the 1099-C form. It looks just like a W-2 form and it means pretty much the same thing -- except the C stands for Cancellation of Debt in the eyes of the IRS. More

Central Valley and Bay Area Real Estate Information and Services at PMZ.com

Hotel foreclosures in California more than quadrupled last year as business travelers and vacationers cut spending and commercial real estate values plunged, forcing owners into default, according to a survey released today.
There were 62 foreclosures on hotels in the state last year, compared with 15 in 2008, Irvine, California-based Atlas Hospitality Group said in a statement. Properties in default jumped almost six-fold to 307, said Atlas, which specializes in selling hotels. The survey only covered California. More

Giuseppa Bagnarol, 82, was in her final hours in August, dying at home surrounded by the large family she presided over as matriarch.

Carolina Bagnarol at the family compound with a picture of her mother, Giuseppa.

But that night an unwanted visitor arrived: a process server delivered papers that ordered Mrs. Bagnarol and her family to get out. The bank had foreclosed on their property, and they were all being evicted. More
 http://jeffgreen.pmz.com
