Social network and lifestream backup services are a needle in a hay stack nowadays, sure there are a wide variety of services that backup one or two of your networks, but what if I were to tell you that there was one backup tool to rule them all?

A new online startup funded by First Round Capital called Backupify allows you to backup networks like Gmail, Twitter, Google Docs, Flickr, Facebook,Basecamp, Wordpress, Delicious, Photobucket, Blogger and FriendFeed. Now that’s a long list, but Backupify allows you to backup all of these services, and they are in the process of releasing more in the future.

Backing up your whole online life is as easy as entering your login information for the network of your choice and clicking backup, you can also backup and manage different accounts for the same network. If Twitter or Flickr ever kick the bucket and lose all of your information, Backupify will restore your account to its previous state, most of the restoring is done manually by coders since automated backup is not yet available for some services.

With all that work involved in restoring certain networks, it really goes to show you how committedBackupify is to customer service and providing a good product to consumers.

To start Backupify has a free account option with memory space up to 1gb, and paid subscriptions will be rolling out shortly. In many aspects Backupifyis ahead of the game being one of the first all in one lifestream backup tools on the web, Backupify has just officially raised the bar for all web backup services.

The only catch is that you watch an ad before you download it, they even let you pick the ad! The downloads are wicked fast (possibly because it’s a very small beta) but still very impressive.FAM also has a large music selection from all over the world, I even found quite a few artists from France and other parts of Europe that ITunes does not even allow me to download because I am not from that specific country or continent. FAM allows each user to download 5 songs a week (which starts on Tuesday for them), and please realize that these free songs do not carry over like cell phone minutes, each week the max remains 5. I hope that FAM will not become another Lala where Apple buys them out, that would really be a shame.

Free music based on just watching a quick ad is a firm concept in the current economic times and anything that is free always stands the test of time in any market. Check them out and sign up for their beta!

Failin.gs should be going live very soon, and I can’t wait to see the public’s reaction to Danny and Stephen’s project. I had the great opportunity to interview Danny and Stephen about their project and without further adieu read on below. I think this is just the beginning of their success in the startup scene.

What is failin.gs and how do you think it will effect the social networking market?

failin.gs is a website that lets you create a profile, blast it to your network, and have people you know come in and give you completely anonymous feedback about you. Maybe there’s some personality flaw that you have but don’t know about? Well maybe now you can. It’s an exercise in self-realization, and we hope it won’t be hurtful but fun for people.

As for how it will affect the market, it’s hard to say. We hope it will have a positive impact on encouraging people to embrace a more honest web. We’ll see. It’s something of a leap of faith to see if people can “play nice.” I think they can, but people have disagreed with me.

How did the idea of failin.gs come together and who was involved in its creation?

Stephen Celis and I are always bouncing ideas off of one another, and this is an idea I’ve been kicking around for a while. There aren’t any sites that do specifically THIS, and I’ve always heard you should build a webapp of something that you yourself want. Chances are, there are a bunch of other people that want the same thing, even if they don’t know it yet. So we started talking about it.

How did you decide on the name failin.gs?

Initially we wanted to call it fla.ws, but it seemed more negative somehow. We just started brainstorming on how to leverage geographical domains. How could we work it in to a word that described what the site was about? I’ve always been a fan of sites like del.icio.us that did a play on site URLs, so we just kept playing around until Stephen landed on failin.gs. We knew it was right.

When do you expect failin.gs to come out of beta?

We’re expecting to launch the private beta on Valentine’s Day. As far as an official open launch, we’re not sure yet. Hopefully by March.

Who funds failin.gs? (you,VC firm etc…)

Fortunately it’s not very expensive right now, so I’m paying for the hosting and other things out of pocket.

When & where did the failin.gs project start?

We started on failin.gs… Let me see. The first check-in to the repository was October 19, 2009. Though we really didn’t get started full-steam until around mid-January. Stephen works up in Chicago and I’m down here in Asheville, NC, so we’ve been working remotely on it with great success.

I wish Stephen and Danny the best of luck and hope to see a lot more from them in the future. Go check them out at failin.gs

With this app you can remotely (through your wireless network) control the mouse and keyboard functions of your computer. The best part is that the app is completely free via the AppStore. After testing out the app, its extremely responsive and has a lot of configurable options. The software is a simple worry free install; In order to start using Logitech’s TouchMouse App you need to go to http://bit.ly/9YMnj7 and download Logitech’s “server” software which allows your iPod touch or iPhone to connect to your computer effortlessly. After the server software is installed just open up the app on your device and select your computer from the list above and off you go. If your computer does not seem to be on the list above you can use the IP address option, your IP address can easily be found by right clicking on the Logitech TouchMouse server icon in your taskbar.

I found this app very useful, especially if you have your TV hooked up to your computer or you are doing a presentation. Go check it out, its really worth a try if you have an iPhone or a iPod touch.

I thought I would share some neat Twitter tools that everyone can use.

If you are just befuddled with who to follow on Twitter, check out Mr.Tweet. Mr.Tweet shows you a list of people to follow based on who you currently follow and who follows you. It’s a great resource to find some interesting people to follow. To start using Mr.Tweet check out their website here.

Another great Twitter Tool is Goodbye Buddy, this is a great tool if you want to keep track of your followers. Every time that someone unfollows you, Goodbye Buddy Will send you a direct message via Twitter informing you who unfollowed you that day. To start using Goodbye Buddy just follow them on Twitter, check out their website here.

TwitterFeed is a widely known Twitter tool and is very helpful to many bloggers in general. I use it for JeffOnTheGo to forward posts to the JeffOnTheGo Twitter feed which is its main feature. Check them out at their site here.

One of the most interesting Twitter tools that I have come across so far would be Magpie. Magpie is a company that pays you to post advertisements using Twitter. The basis for getting paid is, the more followers you have the more money you have the chance to make, but there are a lot of other things that can affect your max Magpie income like if followers click the ad etc… I personally have not signed up yet, but never say never! Check them out here.

Smashing Magazine has a pretty complete list of Twitter tools you can check out here.

If you have any suggestions for some great Twitter tools, leave a comment and let me know!

Happy Tweeting

My first impression of the new iPad is that its basically a larger version of the iPod touch, one of which I proudly own. I really think Apple messed up with the iPad, partly because they forgot a lot of key features that consumers want. One of the most important features that apple left out was a camera, with new applications like Ustream and Qik allowing iPhone users to stream live video from their device, why wouldn’t apple include a camera? Now most of the time Apple excludes such large updates purely for marketing purposes but in the case of the iPad I think they went a little too far. Even being so bold to exclude flash diminishes Job’s comments about how it’s the perfect web browsing experience. I wonder how perfect it can be if there is a box with a question mark in it at just about every webpage?

As a lot of other bloggers around the tech scene have remarked, this device is targeted towards non techies, I agree with them, because I personally couldn’t do any more with the iPad then what I do with my iPod touch besides enjoy the bigger screen. What I found really comical about the device is that the unlock button is the exact same size as the iPhone or iPod touch! Didn’t they think of proportion when designing this thing? Another rumor flowing around is that the iPad is a kindle killer, though the new book interface for the iPad is pretty cool, I would say that in terms of price you get more bang for your buck with Apple (Sorry Amazon), ever since the kindle was released its always been heavily over priced, I would rather carry around 5 books then pay $300 for a device that only simulates paper.

Overall I think that Apple really messed up this time, they released a product that is a larger version the iPod touch and continued to excluded key features (camera, built in SD card port, microphone,FLASH!!! etc…) that were key to its success. Don’t get me wrong, the iPad is really awesome, but I expected so much more from Apple, I think many of us did. And once again they didn’t deliver. Students, I would not recommend buying the iPad unless your fine without the missing hardware features listed above, or you just want something cool to read your textbooks on.
