These tips can help you in our Seattle area snow. Stay prepared this winter:

Assess your situation for the day. Do you really need to be driving today? Is it an emergency? Can you walk (wear traction devices on the bottom of your shoes for safety when walking on ice), can you mountain bike, or cross country ski instead? Can you take the bus or the train? No? Then stay home and enjoy the snow. If you must drive here are some tips to do so safely. According to our local police the number one reason for accidents on Seattle area highways is because drivers go too fast. You can't drive at the same speed on wet and icy roads as you would on dry roads. And do not abandon your vehicle on our roads. Washington State Department of Transportion says to please stay with your car until help arrives (because snow plows need to be able to plow the roads).

If you must drive be sure you have chains in your vehicle. So if you get into trouble you can put chains on your tires.

When driving keep a large cushion of distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you. Remember, it only takes one small patch of black ice to spin you or the person in front of you off the road. Black ice is commonly found in shady areas, highway underpasses, bridges, and in the middle of intersections.

The pace of Seattle traffic can change suddenly and it usually means one of two things: an accident has happened or an accident almost happened. Keep your eyes open and drive defensively at all times during inclement weather.

When braking in the snow be sure your tires are straight and that you tap your breaks lightly. Do not slam on the brakes.

Look for alternate routes. If you need to drive somewhere that involves a hill see if there is an alternate route you can take so you don't have to negotiate an icy hill. If a hill is closed it is closed for a reason and oftentimes closed hills have kids sledding down them. So find another route. If you must drive up a hill don't try to slow down the vehicle as this will stop the momentum of speed needed to summit. If driving down a hill use a low gear to slow down instead of using your brakes.

If you slide or skid don't make sudden movements. Instead simply take your foot off the gas and keep your foot off the brakes until you have safely gained control of your vehicle.

If you get in an accident during an unexpected snow storm in the Puget Sound only call 911 if you have a life or death emergency. It's likely you aren't the only one suffering from a fender bender. So exchange insurance information and file a report later. You could help save someone's life who really needs 911 that day.

Snow Alerts, School Closures, Traffic

This winter it is projected to be a winter wonderland. Candy Cane Lane in Ravenna (pictured above) (December 10 to New Year's)
This is by far the best one to drive through in Seattle for charming Christmas light displays. It's a free light display that you can walk or drive through in a loop put on by the neighbors of Park Road and Ravenna Boulevard. The neighborhood has been putting on this community light show since 1941. (December 10 through New Year's Day from 4 p.m to 11 p.m.; on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve the lights are on until midnight). Address: Northeast Park Road, off Ravenna Boulevard, Seattle, WA 98105.

2. Olympic Manor near Greenwood (Mid-December)
The Olympic Manor neighborhood in Seattle has it in their homeowners association rules that they are encouraged to decorate for Christmas each year. Dozens of homes are decorated and it's a longtime holiday favorite in Seattle. Don't be surprised to see limos driving through. Address: Start at Northwest 85th Street and 23rd Avenue Northwest.

3. Kerry Park Viewpoint on Queen Anne Hill (Month of December)
After driving through to see the Christmas displays of the picturesque homes on Queen Anne Hill head to the Kerry Park Viewpoint for the best view in town of the lighted tree a top the Space Needle. It's free too. Address: 211 W. Highland Dr. Seattle, WA.

Seattle Holiday Festivals

The holiday season in Seattle offers fun winter festivals and downtown Seattle sparkles in holiday lights. What do they all have in common? They are all haunted.

Mercedes Yaeger, founder/owner of the Market Ghost Tour, shines a fascinating light on our Seattle ghosts that lurk in Pike Place Market. Did you know that on the third level of the Market there is an old wooden ramp that used to be the gateway to stables? It looks out of place when you first set eyes on it. In our modern Market, it just doesn't seem to fit in. Photos of this ramp have shown orbs and it's considered one of the creepiest places in the Market. Why? Because people have claimed to see the ghost of a young boy -- with no eyes.

"The Market Ghost Tour started years ago and many Market characters have led tours over the years, including my father, Michael Yaeger and Sheila Lyon, of the Market Magic Shop," says Mercedes. In 2004, Mercedes and her father led a tour on Halloween night; the turnout was so successful that Mercedes turned the tour into a business. She also wrote a riveting book, Seattle's Market Ghost Stories in 2005 (she is currently writing another one).

On a recent tour, we learned about the large building that houses Kells Irish Restaurant & Pub (on the Post Alley Side). It is the site of the former Butterworth Mortuary. The owners of Kells have had minimal problems with ghosts; it might be because they sprinkle holy water throughout the entire restaurant each day. The other side of the building on 1921 First Avenue has not been as lucky. In fact, it's a prime piece of Seattle real estate and it sits empty. Previous restaurant owners that used the space have closed their doors stating financial hardship. Yet, crazy ghost activities have been seen by former customers, former employees and even by Mercedes.

Mercedes was a recent panel speaker for the Darkness Radio and Ghost Adventures Crew/Travel Channel event in Seattle. She says, "We now have a stronger understanding of what is around the Market according to paranormal research and we will be combining that into the tours."

Discover what it's like to roam the empty Market at night. The tours meet outside the famous gum wall (the second germiest place in the world, outside the Market Theatre) on the cobbled Post Alley road -- that's code for don't wear high heels on this tour. The ferry-serviced islands in Northern Washington are the biggest draw for locals and visitors: Orcas, San Juan (Friday Harbor), Lopez and Shaw. And each island offers something different.
Each June the ferries run on a summer schedule departing from Anacortes, WA. And when the summer schedules start the islands swell with visitors. The best time to visit the San Juan Islands is between April and October (January through March most boutique stores are closed on the islands for winter). July and August are the warmest months to visit the San Juan Islands and also the busiest. The summer months are peak prices for exploring the islands. To know how to visit the islands efficiently can help you enjoy your time there without draining your pocketbook. If you plan to take a car on the ferries to visit more than one island there are additional costs to consider depending on how you map out your stay, when you plan to visit and the length of your vehicle.

The most cost-effective way to visit more than one island is to know how the ferry schedules and fees work. Ferries take off from Anacortes; plan ahead for a two hour drive north from Seattle and arrive at the ferries at least two hours before your ferry leaves, especially during the peak summer season. The quickest way to squelch your island trip is to miss a ferry and have to wait for the next one. Wait times in between can be long. Once at the ferries you have two options.

1. Pay to park your car and walk on the ferry.
2. Or pay to take your car on the ferry.

You are charged for you car on Westbound travel only. That means to keep your costs down you'll want to begin your stay as far west as possible. The two farthest islands west of Anacortes are San Juan Island and Orcas Island. San Juan Island (also known as Friday Harbor) is a foot friendly island. Meaning you can walk on interisland ferries from where you are staying and not need a car to explore downtown San Juan Island, saving you transportation money. The most cost-effective way to explore more than one island with a car is to pay the applicable fees to take your passengers and car on the ferry headed to Orcas Island first from Anacortes. By starting your island trip on Orcas you can then walk on an interisland ferry for free and do a day trip to San Juan Island (otherwise known as Friday Harbor) while staying on Orcas Island. After one or more nights on Orcas Island you can take a ferry from Orcas Island to Lopez Island without getting charged again for your car. This is because you will be headed Eastbound. After staying one night or more on Lopez Island you can then catch a ferry from Lopez back to the mainland at Anacortes to conclude your time in the islands on a ferry budget.

If you plan to go to any of the other ferry-serviced islands first then you will get charged again for your car every time you head Westbound with a vehicle. Just keep in mind after you initially pay to take your car on a ferry from Anacortes then as long as you stay Eastbound in your travels of the islands you won't be charged again on interisland ferries for taking your car around to the different islands. Then when you return to Anacortes from whatever island you are on the fee is covered since you are headed Eastbound. According to the Washington State Ferries for the San Juan Islands "Every time you go Westbound you pay and traveling Eastbound is free."

Visit their website: San Juan Islands

Seattle Farmers Markets

Seattle & Tacoma farmers' markets are open to the public who are looking to eat fresh and seasonally. And many visitors come to Seattle wondering where the intern house owned by fictional Dr. Meredith Grey is located. The fictional address on the show is at 613 Harper Lane. But there is no such street on Seattle's Queen Anne Hill. If you want to drive and check out the real-life home of the interns (pictured above) the address is: 303 Comstock St., Seattle, WA. The house is not one interns could typically afford. The $1.3 million dollar home was built in 1905 and includes four bedrooms and 2.5 baths with 2,740 square feet of living space.

Here is an overhead map of the home: Grey's Anatomy Intern House

Day Trips: Mountains of Washington State

In the spring, summer and early fall months our mountains attract outdoor enthusiasts, especially hikers. Here are a few worth noting for hikes and day trips in Washington State:

Diablo Lake (pictured above) in the Washington Cascades; Viewpoint is located right off Highway 20 in the Ross Lake National Recreation Area. It's a popular recreational area with campers, hikers, and boaters. The Diablo Lake Adventure Tours run Friday through Sunday in July and August and weekends only in June and September. Call 206-684-3030 for more information. Note: Highway 20 is closed usually November to April during snow season.

The Big Four Mountain and Ice Caves in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest are off the Mountain Loop Highway outside the town of Verlot (where you must pick up a trailhead parking pass for $5 at the Verlot Public Service Center). The ice caves are a nice short hike with the help of the new aluminum bridge that gets you across the river. Questions? Call the Darrington Ranger District 360-436-1155.

Mount Pilchuck is popular with intermediate to experienced hikers. It's a steep three-mile hike up through loose rock and scree to the fire lookout at the top. It's very crowded in the summer so plan accordingly. On a clear day you'll see a panoramic view of the Cascades, Olympics, & Puget Sound from the top. There is usually still snow on the trail through midsummer. Requires a parking permit.

The Olympic National Park is located a short ferry ride from Seattle across the Sound to Bainbridge Island. It is also accessible by U.S. Highway 101. It's popular with hikers, backpackers, and campers.
Mount Baker in Bellingham, WA is very popular with skiers and snowboarders in the winter and hikers in the summer and fall. It's also the start of the annual Ski-to-Sea race; a seven-leg adventure race involving teams from recreational to competitive. The photo of Mount Baker shown above was taken from a ferry boat headed to the San Juan Islands.

At 14,410 feet Mount Rainer National Park beckons mountain climbers May through October; find a Mountainering Guide. It's also popular with hikers in the summer and fall and for those interested in scenic drives or camping. Most hikes offer breathtaking views of lakes, landscapes, and floral fields. Entrance fees are applied when you drive into the park. Be sure to consult their Web site before going to make sure you are aware of all applicable fees and passes needed to use the park.
