Riverfront park proposed for vacant property along the greenway in Teaneck

TEANECK - A riverfront park with plantings and benches and a winding trail is being planned for a one-acre vacant property at 640 River Road.

The Friends of the Hackensack River Greenway and the Hackensack River Greenway Advisory Board applied for a $25,000 grant to create a sitting area wall at the River Road side of the property and a handicapped accessible trail leading to gardens with new shrubs and trees at the water front, where the property connects to the Hackensack River Greenway.

Norma Goetz, who with Marie Warnke and Mary Topolsky, wrote the application for the Green Acres grant, said that the proposed trail will have multiple turns so that handicapped and elderly persons from nearby Classic Residence couldd walk down the steep grade to the river. The trail will comply with ADA requirements for grade level.

"Without the multiple turns and switchbacks, the grade would be too steep for elderly people," said Goetz, a neighbor of the property, who noted that signs in Braille and shrubs and flowers with a variety of scents are also proposed for the park.

The land was owned by Jehovah’s Witnesses for many years. But the Board of Adjustment twice rejected the Witnesses’ application to build a Kingdom Hall on the property, citing traffic and other concerns. In 2010, the township bought the property from its owner for $600,000.

Lewis Osmond, president of the Friends of the Hackensack River Greenway, noted that the deadline for the application to go to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection is Feb. 15.
The Greenway trail at the riverfront runs south behind private houses and connects to the Greenway at Terhune Park. The plans call for 12 new trees, separating the park from the private house to the south.

The entire project, which was planned by Topolsky, a landscape designer, will cost $34,000, Warnke said, $9,000 of which will be financed by a cash donation and donated labor from the Friends group and donated labor from the Teaneck DPW. She noted that Cadmus Brook emerges from the underground on the site and drains into the river.

The project calls for a fence along the brook, but with an opening midway to the river so children can play in the shallow water, Warnke said.

The new park, which in time may become part of Terhune Park, will not only give people greater access to the Greenway, but will make the Greenway a more visible presence, Warnke said.

If we are living and walking by holy spirit, we will work hard so that we can care for our family and also have “something to distribute to someone in need.” (1 Tim. 5:8) Jesus and his apostles set aside funds to help the poor, but the betrayer Judas Iscariot carried off some of the money. (John 12:4-6) He surely was not led by holy spirit. A young brother was doing some business witnessing when he got to the pictured pub. It was closed for business but he rang to speak to the owners.

A woman opened the window and screamed obscenities to him from top first floor window. Then she told the brother to clear off.

Following the advice in the WT on Sunday, the brother asked:

'May I speak to George then please?'

Our circuit overseer related an experience

He reminded us of how it was on a Tuesday.

It was also the week that the current GILEAD SCHOOL would graduate.

he told us of a little "tradition" the brothers there had of touring the UNITED NATIONS and the WORLD TRADE CENTER He explained the bus tour etc. and how it all goes.

....On this particular day (September 11, 2001) they (Gilead Graduates a few C.O.'s as well as the ENTIRE GOVERNING BODY)_ decided to go on the tour.

....****Earlier in the talk, he mentioned how ...before they left BETHEL...everyone was to meet in the lobby at a certain time exactly...but there's always ONE PERSON LATE.**** As they were visiting the WTC.... the GOVERNING BODY was about to take an elevator up and as they stood waiting for the next one up....a PLANE had crashed into the building and the elevator that they were waiting for came CRASHING DOWN THE SHAFT along with debris and fire. Everyone was evacuated to safety!

One of the GB members would later tell this same C.O.:

"This was not an attack on this country.....this was an attack on JEHOVAH'S ORGANIZATION"

Three days later, on September 11, graduates and their families were touring New York City, in the United States. That day began warm and beautiful with clear, blue skies. Music: Megadeth

It's been with 20 years since the original "Clash of the Titans" tour with Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax. Unfortunately, if you are old enough to have experienced the first go-round, you may be a bit too old now to bang your head like you did back in thrash metal's early days.

But don't worry, dear friend. If you'd rather curl up with a book than get cozy with a bunch of sweaty dudes in Iron Maiden T-shirts, there is a wonderful compromise: Mustaine, the new autobiography of Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine.

For those not familiar with the back story, before he was the red-headed lead singer and lead shredder of speed metal pioneers Megadeth, Dave Mustaine was an original member of Metallica. He was ousted from the band before they released their first album, not necessarily for his substance abuse (longtime fans remember when Metallica's nickname was Alcoholica), but for how quick his temper became when he was using. Right before Metallica hit it big, Mustaine was literally sent packing -- given only a bus ticket to get from New York back home to California, without another dime.

Mustaine has never forgotten his dismissal and never let go of the grudge. In fact, it is the impetus for all things Megadeth. Recalling the genesis of Megadeth, Mustaine says, "I wanted to find a group of musicians who were talented and ambitious. I was out for blood. I wanted to kick Metallica's ass, and I couldn't do that with amateurs. The mission was too important for dilettantes."

Mustaine reads like a screenplay of a "VH1 Behind the Music." Through hard work, blistering fret work and hatred for his former bandmates, Megadeth rose to rock's top tier, selling millions of records. But with the stardom came a revolving door of band members, plenty of sexual deviance and enough drugs to kill anything less than a metal god. But if there is anything that VH1 has taught us, sooner or later it all comes crashing down. After years of both success and decadence, Mustaine eventually found himself in a yet another rehab center, without his wife, kids, or band.

This same story can found in just about every rock-ography. What really stands out inMustaine are the periphery tales. Mustaine shares his religious experiences -- ranging from a fanatical Jehovah's Witness youth, to teenage dabblings with the occult, to his adult conversion to Christianity. He also delves into regrettable decisions to chase mainstream recognition (another attempt to beat Metallica) and recounts being knocking off the top of the charts by Billy Ray Cyrus and his achy breaky heart.

"Megadeth sold a shitload of records that summer, but nothing compared to Billy Ray Cyrus. I just couldn't figure it out. Someone once asked me if our paths ever crossed, us being chart toppers at the same time and all and I joked, 'Yeah, I told him I had this idea for a sitcom about a guy whose teenage daughter leads a double life and becomes a big pop star. F---er stole my concept.'"

But the real reason why Mustaine is a must-read for all rock fans is that he gives the best description of the importance of hair in metal ever written.

"Everyone had long hair in those days, with the exception of the punk bands. In hard rock and heavy metal, hair was long, and within that framework a decision was to be made: Up or down."

"You were either like Page and Plant (hair down, and thus cool) or you were like KISS, Mötley Crüe and so many other imitators (hair up, and thus not so cool). My hair went down. Always did, always will."

It's hard to argue with the logic.

Canines are already used in police work, search & rescue and tracking, not to mention their amazing
