Sleep- it’s the one thing that most parents with young children wish they had more of and isn’t hard to achieve if you put in just a little extra effort. Stick around. I’ll tell you what’s working to wake up well-rested as a mom of 4 kids seven years old and younger.

My kids have always risen with the roosters, literally. Here in rural Costa Rica the neighbors’ roosters crow at the crack of dawn. We’re talking around 5 a.m. year-round, folks! (We’re near the equator.) It’s bad news when neither blackout curtains nor sleep training alarm clocks nor the most dreaded threats keep those little feet from padding around the house, pulling at your covers, or worse yet- entering your room in a tizzy to proclaim the wrong done to them by siblings in a voice that’s outrageously <del>annoying</del> loud for any hour before 7 a.m. I’ve been there. It’s hard, I know.

What’s working for us these days

I’ll start with a disclaimer. My method is not what you might expect, and no, it doesn’t work 100% of the time, especially if sibling squabbles arise in the wee hours of morning light. However, for the most part, my husband and I and our 2 month-old who shares a room with us have been able to sleep significantly longer over the past month since Husband and I implemented this idea. I won’t claim it as my own, as I first saw it done by a homeschooler here. All I know is that it is transforming my mornings into the kind I’ve been hoping for for 7 years. Yes, it has taken that long. But that doesn’t have to be the case for you.

Give them work.

No, I’m not talking about setting out rubber gloves and organic cleaners, expecting your little Cinderella to get some chores done. I’m talking about learning activities, or even homework that they can sit down and quietly work on while you snooze. This will look different depending on your child’s age and family’s lifestyle or take on learning.

How did I come up with this?

I stumbled upon implementing kids morning work after a loooong teacher’s strike here in Costa Rica. In fact, it’s still going strong as I type this post, more than 5 week later. My kids were bored, asking when they’d head back to class every single day with enough gusto and repetition to make my head spin. They wanted to learn, to work on school pages, so I gave it to them.

What this looks like in our house

Every day is different. My seven year-old loves to write stories and do math problems. Some days I’ll leave out a small composition notebook and she will copy phrases, add or subtract, practice her handwriting with Bible verses or letters of the alphabet. Other days she’ll string beads and make necklaces, do a 100-piece puzzle, or color pages from a coloring book.

My five year-old loves puzzles and keeps busy with those for an uncanny-good amount of time. He also works on his letters in a lined notebook or dry-erase learning book. This book is his fave.

Our three year-old enjoys hands-on activities. Most mornings she’ll engage in Play-doh forming, bead work, shape matching activities, or even a simple set of alphabet magnets or princess magnets on a baking sheet.

What it isn’t

Technology or messy art projects. #mamacantdeal

Where we set up morning work

The kitchen table. Because our house is small and our children share a bedroom, I set out their morning learning activities at the kitchen table. Each child has their unofficial “assigned seat” and knows which project is their own based on where I’ve placed it. Most activities do rotate between children throughout the course of a week.

Of course, if your children have their own rooms, it would probably be wise to set up each child’s morning learning work in his or her own bedroom. The fewer children in close proximity to one another, the quieter your mornings will be.

Prep the night before

Right before bedtime I take a minute or two to grab an activity for each child to keep them busy the next morning. I keep handy a small bin full of educational activities and crafty items to pull out on the fly. My kids don’t get bored doing the same dry-erase activities a few times a week or having the same beads and string regularly. I think they’re just glad to get out of bed and greet the morning. It’s a beautiful compromise!

I hope that these ideas earn you some well-deserved zzz’s this week. Tell me, how do you keep your children from waking early and how do you keep them quiet and safe in the morning while you’re getting ready, having quiet time, or, like me, just craving a few more precious minutes of sleep?

Until next time,

Strolling through Paris nibbling on buttery, flaky croissants while taking in breathtaking scenery and chic Paris street style just might not be scribbled into your bullet journal “to do”list today, but killer perfect croissants can and should be a part of this week’s menu plan.

Too many people scoff at the idea of making homemade croissants, thinking they’re too much work, hassle, or beyond their own culinary abilities. Take it from me, anyone can make perfect butter croissants. My homemade croissants post is still a top 10 hit on Jellibean Journals…for good reason. They’re that darn delish. And honestly don’t require a huge commitment on your part.

Now, this post is not about how to bake croissants, the turning techniques, or baking time. If you want that info, check out my oldie but goodie croissant recipe here.

Still with me? Alrighty. This article is all about how to really rock your croissants- take them from Betty Crocker to Pierre Hermé, that is, if he makes croissants. (All I know in my humble home a sea’s distance from the Eiffel Tower is that his macarons are top-notch). I digress… If you want to perfect your croissants, here are my tried and true tips.

Warm up the croissant dough.

Croissant dough typically refrigerates a few hours or overnight before the thin square of butter (block) is wrapped into it. Firm, cold dough doesn’t roll out well and resists “accepting” the butter. Take your dough out of the fridge for at least 15 minutes before rolling it out and introducing the butter block.

Sprinkle the butter block with flour.

Generally, to shape the butter, I place room temperature butter sticks into a quart Ziplock bag and roll them out with a rolling pin to fit the rectangular shape of the bag. Adding 2-3 tablespoons of flour to the bag with the butter helps the butter to merge better into the dough once you get to wrapping it in dough. Just snip the sides of the bag and pop the perfectly shapen butter right onto your rolled dough.

More turns early on

While the room temperature butter and slightly warmer dough and being wrapped and rolled out for the first set of turns, their consistencies are very similar- in fact, the more the textures of both are similar, the better time you’ll have rolling and turning the dough. In my experience, this is the prime time to do a few extra book turns to the dough, as the butter is nice and soft and less likely to “cut” into the dough.

Please excuse the coffee dribbles. I’m still working on the action shots.

Let it rest

The hardest part of baking croissants is the waiting game. Be patient. The dough needs to relax between turns and to warm up a bit (~15 min.) before you complete a turn. Be sure to follow instructions and allow dough to rest as indicated to create the most lovely flaky textured butter croissants. It’s worth it!

Bake to golden

Nothing ruins a potentially perfect croissant more than under-baking. Be sure that your buttery beauties are golden, not pale yellow, when you remove them from the oven. When in doubt, bake a few minutes longer. Think more 80’s sun-kissed summer glow and less porcelain doll skin tone.

Be like the Little Engine that Could

If something goes wrong and your croissants don’t turn out quite like you’d hoped, give it another try! Plenty of mishaps, misshapen croissants, butter oozing croissants, flat croissants and similar experiences have led me to croissant success today. Like my husband always says fail forward!

Happy baking!

No time for dessert? Is that really possible? This creamy easy chocolate mousse is dark chocolate bliss infused with tangy orange whizzed up in mere seconds. Bright flavors of summer served up fast!

I nearly engaged our overstuffed lounge chair in a full-frontal attack as I dived for the phone, ringing endlessly during….NAPTIME. (Cue horror movie music here.) Trying to put on my kind “telephone” voice, I smiled and said “hello.” Sidenote: did you know that smiling while speaking actually makes you sound friendlier even over the telephone wires? It’s a trick I learned ages ago during my tele-surveying days.

It was Husband asking if we could invite a couple of guests over before their flight home the next day.

“Of course!” I agreed, and then proceeded to scroll through a mental list of last-minute dessert ideas.Chocolate mousse recipes vary a lot. No eggs? There’s a recipe for that (including this one!) Dairy-free chocolate mousse? Yep, totally doable. Vegan? Check. My favorite French chocolate mousse. So many chocolate mousse recipes to choose from. If you’re looking for the best chocolate mousse, definitely Google around and try a recipe each week. You might be surprised to find that your taste buds prefer the texture and flavor of a mousse you’d never known before! This easy chocolate mousse is an avocado chocolate mousse. Yes, I know these recipes have been circulating the internet for the past five years, but there’s a reason. They’re simple, quick, healthy, and delicious. And this one just so happens to include bright fresh juicy orange flavors for a blast of summer in your prettiest dessert bowl.My kids attempted to photo bomb the creating of the post pics, with blatant plans to scarf down my mousse. Only my youngest managed to wrangle a couple nibbles before Husband (my rock star photographer) and I managed to shoo them out of the backyard. This weekend’s farmer’s market shopping list will definitely include a handful of gorgeous Hass avocados to make and remake this easy chocolate mousse recipe all throughout the week.

Since I am 32 weeks pregnant, I’ve been cutting out a lot of sugar, especially refined white sugar. Gestational diabetes, take that! In fact, I printed out this 365 calendar and set the bar<del> too</del> high aiming for a year without sugar. We’ll see how it goes. In the meantime, I’ve been enjoying occasional desserts like this vegan chocolate orange mousse to curb cravings and satisfy my sweet tooth with healthier options.Did you know that besides containing heart healthy fats, avocados also contain over 20 vitamins and minerals? The mono-unsaturated fats in these plump green fruits help increase the absorption of fat-soluble nutrients like vitamins A, D, K and E and are also a great first food for babies. In fact, local avocados were the first food I gave my youngest child.

Let’s make some easy chocolate orange mousse now! All you’ll need are a handful of ingredients and your food processor (this is the mini processor that I loooove! And it’s a steal too!).

No-cook meals are a lifesaver when pregnancy has zapped your energy and left you wishing you had a personal chef. Rejoice! A healthy, delicious dinner in minutes is still very possible. C’mon, I’ll show you how!

Creeeak went the kids’ door at an hour that my pregnant self still couldn’t function at a higher level than to mutter something about going back into their (shared) room and closing the <del>blasted</del> door. Note to self: pick up WD-40 on your next supermarket run.

Even after my morning coffee and a long walk, I was still in a funk. By the time lunchtime rolled around, my poor family was destined for…. LEFTOVERS! Sorry guys!

Pregnancy can really deplete your energy levels. Most days, especially throughout the second trimester, mamas are flying high with anticipation of meeting baby, creating baby registries, and pulling out baby items to freshen up in the laundry (if you’re like me and all subsequent children to the eldest are head to toe clad in hand-me-downs.)

Pregnancy isn’t generally the time that most women morph into Ree Drummond and aim for the stars as far as dinnertime cuisine goes…. especially if you’re suffering from sluggishness or nausea. So here’s your list of 12 happy pregnancy meal ideas to inspire you- not wear you out, in the kitchen. Twelve meals that require no cooking and not too much time. And for whatever reason, I realized that a large majority feature avocados. It’s summertime. I’m pregnant. Go figure.

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and emotion surrounding a first pregnancy. Everything is so fresh and new- so much to learn and to get done. Creating dream baby registries, scouring page after page in baby name books, and scheduling 4-D ultrasounds come naturally and with much due anticipation. Creating a countdown to baby calendar is just one more way to add another level of thrill to the months preceding baby’s birth date.

Friends and coworkers, extended family and even friendly acquaintances get excited about that first and even second pregnancy. By the third or fourth pregnancy, the hubbub has died down quite a bit, and it might seem surreal that baby’s even growing inside. A mama friend of mine chatted openly with me about her similar experience, as she neared her second trimester carrying her third little miracle. Now that I’m pregnant too (with my fourth), I can attest to the truth in that statement.

29 weeks with baby #4!

In fact, the raw honest reason I made this colorful little calendar was twofold.

One: To help my preschoolers grasp the idea of how long until baby arrives.

Two: To have a visual aid staring me in the face every day reminding me that… I’M PREGNANT! And that I should therefore remember to hold off on sushi and Thin Mint fudge, drink more water, and sub out 30-Day Shred DVD’s for my favorite prenatal YouTube exercise videos.

No matter whether you’re 4 weeks in, or 34, creating a countdown to baby calendar is a fun afternoon DIY that really bumps up the excitement factor for a pregnant mama-to-be. It also makes a spectacular baby shower gift!

In fact, I was inspired by this video that used a similar calendar baby for baby shower attendees to scribble down tips and encouragement for the new mom. So clever!

Let’s make a countdown to baby calendar!

Supplies:

Scissors

1″ (or bigger) circular punch

scrapbooking paper

Sharpie

washi tape

brightly colored craft paints & paintbrush (optional)

How to:

Check a pregnancy calculator online to determine how many days until your due date.

Find your favorite Netflix program or podcast (you’re gonna be here for awhile!) and begin punching out as many circles as you’ve got days until your due date.

Scribble a number on each circle with your trusty Sharpie. Paint your circles, if that’s your thing.

Determine where you’d like to display your calendar and how many rows/columns you’d like to use. Use a few circles, a ruler and a level to map out your plan. Bust out the washi tape and tape up your DIY countdown to baby calendar. Wow~! You did it!!

Mama, it’s time to make a fourth pregnancy baby registry! You deserve a baby shower and most likely you’ve got a like minded mama friend who agrees wholeheartedly and is more than eager to throw you, deserving mama that you are, that fantastic celebration. Here’s a look at some essentials to add to your fourth pregnancy baby registry including items from my actual running baby registry.

Clothing

Unless you’re Martha Stewart in the washroom, your baby clothes are likely faded, stained, and worn out by now.

Tops and Bottoms

Add some essentials to your registry like these primary colored cotton onesies.

Get a set in every size and a few neutral bottoms and you’re set for daytime.

Pajamas

We all want baby to sleep loooong glorious peaceful nights. And he’ll need cozy cotton pajamas that’ll lull him right to sleep. I’m a big fan of zipper p.j.’s and newborn sleep gowns to keep diaper changes quick and easy during those first few months.

Swaddle Blankets

The velcro on swaddle blankets doesn’t last through more than two kids. If you swear by swaddling, like I do, add a few swaddle blankets in classic prints to your baby registry.

Bedding

Crib Mattress Pad

“I love cleaning mattresses!” said no mother ever. Avoid midnight madness and mess by making sure your baby’s crib is fully protected by a quality mattress pad.

Crib Sheets

These may need refreshing by baby #4 too.

**Best buy: Crib sheets with built in mattress pad protection.

Diaper Supplies

Whether you cloth diaper or choose disposables, every baby’s going to need an ample supply of diapers in varying sizes. Make sure to add these to your baby registry. Here are my Green Mountain Cloth-eez Flat Diapers

Rumparooz One Size Cloth Diaper Cover

Toys

HudsonVallyToyCo on Etsy

Unless you’ve got indestructible toys or a nursery full of wooden classics, most likely your baby toy stash needs overhauled. Here are a couple of my absolute faves from Etsy artists that should do the trick (and last for at least one more generation too!)

MamaMayI on Etsy

SweetSwinging on Etsy

Baby Gear

Baby Carriers

Baby carriers eventually wear out. Even my very well-loved Ergo is on it’s last threads. That’s why I’ve included a brand new baby carrier on my fourth baby’s registry.

Stroller

Fit walking and jogging moms know firsthand how much the daily wear and tear effects our stroller’s efficiency and ease of use. By baby #4, it’s probably time you get a new stroller.

If you’re a runner and have always hoped to involve baby, dream big and add that jogging stroller. You never know, one of your besties might be more than pleased to bless you with it.

Carseat

If your current newborn and toddler seats are outdated or damaged, this one’s a no-brainer. Please check the expiration dates and be sure to add this essential to your baby registry. Mark it as an urgent need- it’s that important for baby’s safety.

Diaper Bag

If you’re like me, you donated or tossed your last diaper bag the minute baby potty trained. You’ll need a stylish and functional diaper bag like this one by Hip Cub.

Bonus Material

Nursing Bras

Sure, these may not be a typical registry item, but if you plan to breastfeed your baby, we both know your old nursing bras are shot…and long gone. Try this top-selling (and one of my personal faves) the Body Silk Seamless Nursing Bra from Bravado.

Bath Sets

Nothing beats cuddling a baby fresh from the tub. Bathe your baby in organic body wash before bedtime with this yummy smelling set from Zoe Organics.

Moms, what other items would you add for your (second, third, fourth…) baby’s registry? Please share in the comments below. I need to add it too!
