New Year New Style Direction?

Lately I've been jonsin' to change up my style.

Last year I went for a more casual look then this Fall I was going for a woodland creature vibe.

Now I'm aiming to go more Avant-garde / goth / futuristic / neon look.

Dudes I know I have been slacking on the blog front.

But I have been steadfast as always over on my tumblr. jemibook.tumblr.com [I have been using it for almost three years now - I usually post outfit photos everyday on there and have a new 'instagram-like'

app I've been using as well to take more daily photos]

My new years was nothing special - but I wanted it that way so nothing bad could happen. I went to sleep at 12 while listening to third eye blind.

I thought about doing resolutions. I don't have good luck with them - so I usually try not to do them. But something that I have been wanting to do - and I've noticed from the other blogs that I follow and enjoy is smiling!

It's kind of simple and silly but I tend to have a more serious face for my default face and people think that I'm upset or mad or something. Some of the blogs I follow really make me smile when I see these girls great smiles. [examples below]

I thought about doing a project - maybe a 365 smile photo each day. I've never tried one of those 365 projects so it would be interesting to see if I could do it.

There is something so basic and simple about Canvas Totes that appeal to me. Whenever I see them on the street and in stores I want to buy them all up! So here is the video I put together of everything that I did this year [ that I have video of]. Yes I used a Katy Perry song for the video this year. #1 because I couldn't find a song that I liked better that represented the year and #2 because it will probably always remind me of this year since it was played so much at so many events. The year was a whirlwind that is for sure. With lots of visitors and new people to help make my life brighter! 2011 turned out to be a pretty great year - and I can't wait for all that 2012 will bring! What happened on your birthday?

This video pretty much sums up what happened on my birthday. Benzie surprised me with my Bryanties and Wife [before they both moved here!] and all of these adventures all day long!

What was your favorite moment in 2011?

There were a few different ones, but when I was sitting on the subway and realized I no longer was afraid of having a panic attack that was pretty liberating. It was nice to start feeling independent once again.

Which one was your favorite month?

September for sure. My wife finally moved here, Bryant had moved a month or so before and we re-started $hit Yeah Girl! Went to the best show of my life for Kish's Birthday [ Sufjan Stevens]. Lots of bonding - soaking up all the summer-sun and just enjoying life!

Most influential people in 2011?

Benzie for sure. Without his constant patience for my schnanigans and all of my ridiculousness I don't know where I would turn in my time of need. He is one of the hardest working individuals I've ever met - and he is always doing more and more to exceed his life expectations. He's my best friend and the only person who knows me better than I know myself. He is also the only other person who would get excited about watching the whole 'Look who's talking now' trilogy!

Troy has been a lifeboat many times this year [I didn't know if I should put him in this spot or the 'new friends' spot.] But he has been influential to my well being a lot this year. We've been on a bunch of adventures - he's shown me around town - introduced me to a lot of fun dance parties I've become obsessed with. Is always the voice of reason when all I wanted to do was party - and he's taken care of me when I fall asleep on the subway after a long night of partying. He became part of our small circle and I'm glad the internet brought us together!

Bryanties and The Wife : Without those two I am sure I would always look like the most reckless foolish person of our bunch - but they keep me from the title. Thankfully! But no really. They are always there to try and cheer me up and work on projects - and be creative with. They are the two most creative people I know and I am always inspired by both of them.

Did you find new friends?

Mike - We met in a strange way, and it worked out really well between us. We bonded over our love for Limp Bizkit when everyone hates - dance parties all night in Philly and random road-trips in the middle of the day.

Nebraska - Technically we've known of each other since 2007 - but it took tumblr and a random message I sent one day for us to meet in person. He is the goofiest person I know and always makes me laugh. We play pokemon together over skype and make a million plans for the future. He's my golden boy and I'm glad I waited so long before I decided to give my heart out again.

Do you regret something?

It makes me sad to say that this section has been easy for me to fill out for the past few years but honestly I don't have any regrets for this year. It all happened the way it did to make me be in the head-space I currently am in - which is something I wouldn't change for the world!

Did your life change in 2011?

Oh yes, I started the year pretty much with no social life and staying home all the time or binge-drinking out at bars in williamsburg. Once I got a job at Buffalo Exchange I found my independence again, then Bryanties moved here and he sparked my musical inspiration with $hit Yeah Girl. The wife arrived soon after and we finally made one of our life goals complete - being room-mates! I quit/grew tired of bad habits I had been partaking in for years now [binge-drinking and serial dating] and started to mellow the fuck out and since then everything has been falling into place. I can finally see the goals I've wanted for years in the distant future. It's been an intense year that's for sure!

Did you find a new job?

Yes, I work Buffalo Exchange with the most fun co-workers ever!

Are you happy that 2011 is over soon?.

Yes, only because I can't wait to see what 2012 has for me - 2011 wasn't the worst though.

Have you already made plans for traveling in 2012?

Yes! Nebraska and I are planning on going to Austin,TX for a little vacation, and I plan on going to Lincoln, NE to visit and for his sister's wedding - we're going to look so dapper together!

Oh geez, so much. Hanging out with my friends here in Brooklyn, working on projects, finishing up zine ideas, reading loads of books and zines, Seeing Nebraska, going on trips, having visitors.

What do you want to change in 2012?

For plane tickets to not cost a million dollars..But I guess to continue to be more active - possibly become more active in the zine community.

What are you NOT looking forward to in 2012?

Potentially having to say goodbye to friends.

Not on the agenda - unless it is a fur baby.

So today on my day off I slept in for the first time in a few weeks probably. Woke up around 11 and started on homework for my job. We are required to do these Trend Reports so that we can learn more about certain brands so we can price them correctly when people bring them across the counter. When I had my review a few weeks ago my manager asked me to do a specific one on all of what we call the 'bread & butter' brands we get a lot in our store. I.e. H&M / Converse / Banana Republic / Gap / Free People / JCrew / Urban Outfitters. I tend to get really detailed when I do my trend reports because I want to be as thorough as possible with each brand/trend. So I have to wait until I have enough time and energy to sit down and properly flesh out all of the information.

A lot happened in the past few weeks so I was forced to do it all today. Which is not fun - let me tell you. You would think that window shopping online all day would be awesome. But it isn't the most fun when you are looking for what the clothing labels look like, why they are priced this way, how many different lines are available - and what the prices are for all of these things. Needless to say I've had a headache most of the day and that's even after I tried to soothe my brain with some Ryan Gosling courtesy of 'The March of Ides' film I slipped in during a break I gave myself after I finished most of the above collages.

Some things that may be of use to anyone that doesn't work as a Buyer at Buffalo Exchange:

The H&M 'Divided' lines are geared toward juniors - and have most of the younger 'trendy' items. H&M with the silver tags are what they call their modern collection for business wear. Their L.O.G.G. line is their 'American eagle rip-off' and usually has a larger percentage of natural fibers in the clothing. They currently are doing a line for 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' and a "Conscious Collection" which features items that use organic fibers.

One of the most interesting things I found out today when I called and talked to a Representative at Converse is that their 'One Star' diffusion brand with Target shoes are 'true to size' and that the ones on the converse website are usually a 1/2 size bigger. They also mentioned that other than Target they don't have any other lines outside of the converse stores, but you can find some of their older shoes on websites like zappos.com

So I decided to pull through my Flickr history and see what I was doing on this day in the past here is what came up :

In 2007 I was working on props for my very first Jemibook show. These ended up being the rainbow 3d glasses I created for everyone to wear while watching my show in the park.

In 2008 I enjoyed this platter of sashimi with Brandon Sweet - it was the first time that I had eaten meat since April of that year when I had gone raw.

In 2009 I wore this to a 'were all couples' party over in St. Paul. Ended up leaving in the middle of a game we were all playing because I drank too much wine way too fast.

Today I am just going off to work and then celebrating because it is technically my Friday and I have the next two days off and I'm going to be able to go and see Bryanties!

1. Being able to shoot Polaroid-like pictures again and not paying a million dollars for film. Now if only I could find one of these for $5 in a thrift store - I would be set!

2. Teas! One of my dreams is to have a full cabinet with different types of teas at my disposal [ this goes along with my other life goals to have a pup and a garden]. I saw this tea come up on tumblr and am curious where to get one for myself!

3.All of the amazing glittery knickers at TopShop when I visited the other day.

4. String lights to make everything a bit more moody and special.

5. Moleskine projects with Nebraska that get me excited for all of the keepsakes we are creating for one another.

6. Zines! I just finished reading Culture Slut #25 and really loved it. Starting on the two comics that I picked up two weekends ago and they have been keeping me smiling.

7. Mood Rings - I used to never leave the house without one of my mood rings on - I would wear them until they were breaking or staining my finger green wherever it sat. I've lost all of my old ones and need new ones now but where to get them?

8. Everything Ryan Gosling does minus Eva Mendes.

9. Pokemon - Nebraska left a gameboy and Pokemon Red for me to play again - it has been over a decade since I was addicted to Pokemon with my brother - it will be fun to re-live it all! I picked Bulbasaur !

One of my closest friends in this world - Bryant - was in a pretty bad incident this past week that has resulted him being in the hospital and we are all waiting for the doctor's to tell us he will be alright but currently it is a waiting game to see how he heals from it all. He is pretty out of it and it is scary - I've never had anything like this happen to a friend before. If you guys could send your good vibes his way I would be eternally grateful.

The 5 Days of Nebraska [ The final day ]

On Nebraska's last day here we looked like this.

We went to Ella Cafe for breakfast. Which was quite delicious and not at all vegan.

After breakfast we headed to the upper east side for an antique flea market before meeting up with the wife and heading over to central park.

Nebraska checking off the rest of the things he wanted to do before leaving NYC.

Made a last shop stop at Top Shop so he could witness the amazing that is Top Shop Men.

Headed over to Trader Joe's and picked up some ingredients so that Nebraska could show off his cooking skills again. Which he made this lovely dish out of. It was supper yummy - and looks professional. I am sure going to miss having a lovely boy cooking delicious meals for me.

I had a great time with Nebraska it has been a long time since I've had a boyfriend to make me feel special and make cute memories with - but I guess I was meant to wait so long so that #1 I wouldn't screw it up again like I always do - and to find someone who is at the same point in their life. Normally I wouldn't ever consider a long distance relationship - but we talk so often and so frequently in all mediums I almost feel like he is here all the time - and we make daily efforts to make the other feel special. It's funny - when we started talking everyone began coming out of the wood-work to tell me about how they were in long distance relationships for years - or how they had met each other the same way that we've met and have been together for years and all of these really sweet stories - I had always only heard that long distance is hard and never works - so it really made me happy. That and this cute tumblr : Long Distance Things that I found from a blogger I follow who currently moved to NYC and her long term boyfriend moved to LA for work and they always fly to each other and have cute adventures.

The 5 Days of Nebraska [ Day 4 ]

On this days adventures Nebraska said he wanted to wield the camera - so the result will be more pictures of me this time - yeah i know ick! The first picture above I am posing with my camera like a professional - because anyone that lives in NY knows your cell phone is a moot point down there.

Before I forget - this is what we looked like - I busted out the unicorn dress for this special occasion of adventures.

For Brunch we went to Foodswings - an amazing Vegan restaurant that serves diner-like food - also my wife works there - so we are there too much. But a little slice of heaven for those like Nebraska who are lactose-intolerant. I got a ham and cheese melt with surf fries, and he got a breakfast burrito with metal fries. We scarfed it down!

We headed over to this amazing comic book festival that I went to last year with Ben and Brit that just happened to be the weekend Nebraska was here.

I picked up the two comics above. I want you #2 and This Isn’t Working: Comics About Ex-Boyfriends.

After the festival we headed over to Ben's for the pool party - but we were a bit early so we hung outside their door and peeped at our comics and drank yummy juices.

Went down to their Billiards room while we waited for the rest of the gang to arrive and watched some bad tv while people badly played pool.

Benzie had got anastasia and I bathing suits to wear at their place when we come over and they were pretty ridiculous.

Went swimming for a few hours played some zombie marco polo and had a short stint in the hot tub and sauna to dry off.

Back upstairs where we ordered some Vinny's pizza [a delicious pizzeria that has some of the best vegan and vegetarian pizza around]. I made some mixed drinks and anastasia promptly passed out while a rather loud game of cranium was played. Discovered that Brit Brit is the champion of drawing with her eyes closed - and that Nebraska is the master of word puzzles. I don't think we've ever played a more intense game of Cranium before - and just so everyone know Balaclava is not to be confused with Baklava.

Back home after a drive home courtesy Benzie where Nebraska looked very man-modely in my bed with his Frankenstein shirt that he altered himself. Gotta love a crafty boy! :)

The 5 Days of Nebraska [ Day 3 ]

Started off the day with Nebraska making us a breakfast scramble with fake meat - green peppers - and onions. It was deliciously fluffy - and I decided he would be the chef in this relationship after it! I made the toast - look how professional it appears!

We wore these clothes on that day - and headed over to my work to pick up my paycheck and wander around Williamsburg again.

We weren't quite full yet so we stopped at Crif Dog and stuffed Nebraska's face with delicious vegan hot-dog-ness! and tator tots as well!

I looked lovingly like this while he stuffed his face.. :p

I took him shopping on Broadway - to all of the lovely stores they don't have in Lincoln and introduced him to some new stores he had never been to before - including Uniqlo and he had his first H&M experience which resulted in a sexy basic henley style shirt being purchased to my delight! In this picture very important artistic acts are being had though - Nebraska was running low on fine quality pens and pencil lead so Dick Blick for the win!

This is what it looks like when Nebraska tries on a hat he doesn't really love at Uniqlo. Oh and those suspenders were purchased at 21Men - what a steal!

This is what it looks like when Nebraska is in retro video game heaven. It had been so long since I was in a store like this - since I lived in Orlando and I used to go video game shopping with my ex all the time. It is really easy for me to get back to being obsessed with video games but I try to stay away because it really takes away from my productivity.

After we shopped till we were going to drop we headed back over to Brooklyn and had dinner at one of my go-to-spots. Wild Ginger - a vegan asian restaurant in Williamsburg.

After Dinner we headed over to Barcade - where Nebraska got his first taste of playing tapper - and then I whooped his butt in all of the other games including - contra - tetris - and - knock out. The wife and Daniel came by later with Foodswings in tow and they played some tetris as well.

We all took the subway back home together and the wife and daniel entertained us with Nsync songs remixed.

The 5 Days of Nebraska [ Day 2 ]

Woke up and had breakfast to get our day started off right for adventures.

Our clothes looked like this.

Our faces and feets looked like this while waiting for the subway into the city.

We did touristy things like go to Nintendo World and play video games and see the Zelda display.

Then we walked around the corner to see the big tree and the ice-rink!

We ran into the Union Square Holiday Market and I fell in love with this spices booth - swoon!

Went to Diesel where he fell in love with the helmets.

Couldn't resist a stop into Barnes and Noble to check the status of our relationship astrologically.

Re-fueled on some crappy NY pizza - while I got yelled at for not knowing the name of all of the pizza's in the place.

Discovered that Nebraska is of the 1% of men that can actually fit into 21Men clothing - which is awesome!

Walked along the High Line and proposed greatness together forever. It really is quite a beautiful spot in NY - I would recommend everyone go there if you haven't yet.

Stopped into Y3 on the way back to Bushwick per Nebraska's request.

Got back to Bushwick and switched into our nighttime outfits!

Met up with the gang at 'The Meatball Shop' in Williamsburg.

Bryant was Troy's date and since he was late he brought Troy a flower to make up for it - that and a hilarious story of why he was late.

After Dinner we headed over to Tacu Tacu for karaoke time and the Buffalo Bro Down.

We all killed it in Karaoke - Fastball / Spandeu Ballet / Britney Spears / Weezer / Queen and I ended it all with Limp Bizkit's - Rollin' . It was fun to see all of my Buffalo's out - and my crew doing karaoke together.

The 5 Days of Nebraska.

So this past week Nebraska finally came to town. I tried to document it as much as possible because we aren't sure when we will be able to see each other again. This is going to be a 5 part post - one for each day! A little x-mas special - Jemibook style.

For those of you who don't know me in person and hear my talk nonstop about Nebraska - this is him! This picture is from where I picked him up at the NJ Train trembling from his first NY hassling from some guy name Midtown Slim. I scooped him up into my arms and took him on his first subway ride all the way back to bushwick!

We had decided beforehand that we wanted to get little notebooks and write to each other about every day with little pictures and such and give it to the other person before we left so we would have a little keepsake from the trip. He picked up mini moleskines and was very diligent about writing in his about each days activity when we had any downtime.

He met my wife once we got back to Bushwick - where I made both of them their very first carrot hotdogs and we shared some Sangria before heading out for some wandering around Williamsburg before going on our first date!

He started to get used to using the metrocard and running to catch trains right before they left.

We went to my store to try on some jeans that I had put on hold for him - and I accidentally pulled out a pair of women's black flares for him that he tried on - it was pretty funny.

Stopped into Brooklyn Industries and snapped this photo of me looking like a giant.

We went to The Gutter where I whooped his butt in the first game - something I never do is win at Bowling.

Nebraska won the 2nd game and this lovely couple that was bowling right next to us asked if we wanted them to take our picture. Nebraska told me that while I was away at the bathroom at one point the girl of the other couple told him that we had good chemistry together and asked how long we were together and was surprised to find out we were on our first date. It was cute.

We headed over to Union Pool after this - simply because I had decided early on that I wanted our first kiss to be documented - and what better way then in my favorite medium - photobooth!

The rest of the gang showed up soon after and met Nebraska for the first time - after months of me jabbering on about him.

Took him to one of the best sandwich places in Brooklyn - Hana Foods - to get him his first delicious vegan sandwich on the ride back to bushwick.

Ben's Birthday : Atlantic City

So I know this post is almost a month overdue now. But honestly I've been too preoccupied with life to put this post together. For Ben's Birthday this year Brit decided she wanted to take him to Atlantic City for his bday - rent out a hotel room and get crunk. Ben is a work-a-holic and they had gone to Atlantic City early in the year and had fun. Ben didn't know what was actually going on for his birthday he just thought that Bryant, Javier and I were taking him out for breakfast. When it began to look like we were leaving Brooklyn over the Verrazano Bridge - Ben began asking questions. We were able to quell his questions for a bit with David Cross - and momentarily convinced him we were going to Jersey Shore [he had recently started watching it on Netflix] but once the Atlantic City signs started showing up it was a bit obvious. Here are the pictures we took from the weekend :

I drove Ben's car - and Brit gave directions - after Ben figured out we weren't going for breakfast Brit pulled out the Dunkin Donuts she had got for the trip.

We all dressed up - I wore my favorite cocktail dress, I believe Ben is wearing one of the Rag & bone t-shirts I picked out for him at my work. He is absolutely obsessed with Rag & Bone, him and Brit buy almost everything I find for them at my store lately - it is pretty awesome - considering Rag & Bone is super expensive regularly.

Bryant chipped in to get a second hotel room for the three of us - so Ben and Brit could have their own room and Brit picked up all the makings for boozey drinks for a game of Kings to start off the day.

She had us all wearing funny hats she picked up before Halloween as well.

Bryant ordered some room-service pizza.

The boys had a fun time with these bed pillows.

An Entenmann's cake was Ben's cake for the event.

This is where the party began.

We didn't have any knives in the hotel room - so Ben decided to remedy this by using his ipad to cut the cake with. This was probably my favorite moment of the weekend. He was so hysterically happy about this - pleased as a little kid that he was doing this - it was great.

We went to the pool after that - where a dj was just ending a pretty swell set - and ben ordered one of the special reserved beds by the pool and we ordered a million drinks and some food.

Back to our rooms where we had a dance party while we waited for Ben and Brit to get ready.

Headed out for dinner - where we traveled far to finally find a place that didn't have an hour long wait for food!

We all had some form of burger!

We did a bit of gambling after that where I lost all of my money and tried to find a Sex and the City slot that wasn't occupied.

We passed out after the boys had a massive pillow fight for at least 30 minutes straight and woke up early in the morning and had sandwiches and headed out.

Overall a pretty fun time in Atlantic City. I think Ben enjoyed the getaway. Much better a present for the mister who stays locked up in the house working all the time. Hope you have a fabulous 27th year BFF!

We Found Love

Hey guys guess what - I had time this morning to put this video together. It has footage from two months worth of stuff I've been doing. From Shit Yeah Girl! rehearsals - to zombie day at my work and walking around times square to meet up the babes - actual Halloween in there with Kish dressed up in the most fabulous ensemble - the last days of summer - the wife and I singing spice girls songs in the car - the view from Ben's new building - going to see Jack's band Radical Face while he was here - random shots with random people at bars - Atlantic city swimming and dancing - going to see Eddie's band while he was in town - karaoke! - and then no video is complete without crazy dancing to Katy Perry's - Firework at Kish's house party last week.

I've been keeping it pretty tame here in Jemibook land - Had a Shit Yeah Girl practice on Sunday - where we basically fine-tuned our timeline for the next couple of months. Went out Saturday for shopping with the ladies - which was nice for a change - we hardly are ever all free at the same time. This week has just been having fun at work - while searching for the most perfect dress for when Nebraska comes - ONE WEEK LEFT!! So excited - we have almost a full itinerary planned for our 5 day vacation - this is the closest thing I have to a vacation - which will be so worth it!

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving - first one with the wife. We have already started on foods - sampled some delicious dishes - and can't wait to scarf it all for the next week! I have Thursday and Friday off - so hopefully I will be able to post some stuff for you lovely peeps - otherwise have a great Thanksgiving!
