Heather and I have known each other since kindergarden so I couldn't be happier for her and her husband Blair. This past weekend, three of my girlfriends and I threw a baby shower for them and we had so much fun putting it all together that I just had to put up a post about it. It was a blast collaborating with them on this party and we were all so happy with the way it turned out. The Southern theme was darling (a nod back to Heather's Oklahoma roots) and every detail, from the colored pom poms to the dessert bar, came together perfectly!

These pom poms were super easy to make and looked great over the dessert bar. You can find a tutorial here: Casa Sugar

The ones I tend to like are always ridiculously overpriced and those in my budget seem to be just plain ugly. I also to change up our bedroom often enough that I don't really feel like spending so much money on something that I might want to toss in the near future. So when in doubt (and on a budget), I DIY. :) I knew I wanted something between modern and shabby chic and searched high and low for something I could transform into exactly what I was envisioning. I finally had some luck at the Alameda Antiques Fair, an amazing once-a-week flea market in the East Bay that is full of treasures galore. After considering several old lamps (and passing most of them up due to faulty aged wiring that would require some cash to fix), I stumbled upon a perfect pair iron candle sticks for $5. They were hollow on the inside so I was able to easily run some wiring (which I had from our old lamps) through them. I used black chalk board paint, which I already had, for the bases as I wanted a nice flat look. For the lamps shades (which were also left over from before), I found a few yards of scrap fabric at my favorite upholstery store (Satin Moon on Clement Street) for $15 and even had a little left over to make a few pillows. All in all, the total cost to redo these 2 lamps was $20! Totally worth it and I am so happy with how they turned out.

I don't love the crowds at the restaurants or the over priced expected gifts that go along with it, but I do love the romantic notions behind this holiday. Maybe it's because Dave and I got engaged on Valentine's Day but whatever the reason, this day makes me happy. Every year at this time, I am reminded of the sweet little paper valentines traded as children and also the yummy candy that always accompanied them. And no matter how may years pass, I never get sick of the old traditional valentine's heart candy, lightly sweet and inscribed with messages of affection - "forever yours", "love u" and "kiss me" to name a few. Although I have to admit that some of the current messages do make me feel old. When did "text me" and "tweet me" become romantic conversation? Oh well, I still love them. And of course, since this is a holiday, I had to make a wreath and these little candies made for the perfect adornment. :)

I started with a flat foam wreath and some pink construction paper. I cut the paper slightly larger than the wreath so that I would have good base for the candy.

Once the paper was glued on, I went to town using my hot glue gun to adhere the hearts onto the paper in several layers.

I think it's a combination of being my mother's daughter (her holiday dessert party has made her a legend on the West Coast of Florida) and also the fact that I just love entertaining people in our home. Something about sharing a good meal, some good wine and good company is one of those things that makes a house feel like a home.

So this month, when three of my girlfriends all had birthdays, I put together a cookie swap so all of the ladies could get together and celebrate (and who doesn't need more cookies after the holidays, right?). Now the cookie swap I can't take credit for - this awesome tradition was started by our friend Kate few years back and when she and her family moved to Portland last August, it left a huge void in our group of friends here in SF. So in honor of Kate, we decided to keep the cookie party alive and hold it in honor of our January birthday gals (in the past it's been a holiday cookie swap in December). Kate was of course missed but we did manage to get her on the phone with us for part of the party. All around a good time and everyone left with full bellies and lots of treats to take home, including some homemade vanilla extract.

Something else I also love about hosting a get together - the party favors! And this particular was not only delicious, but also super easy to make. Instead of using vanilla beans, I used Nielsen Massey Vanilla Bean Paste, which you can find at most gourmet specialty shops (I got mine at Sur La Table). Its cold processed and is concentrated enough to make a large jar of extract (and at about $10 a bottle, it's alot less expensive than the beans!). To make it, I just dumped the whole jar of paste into a large jug and then put in about a liter of vodka (I went for the cheap stuff since I would be cooking with it and not drinking it). I then sealed off the jar and left it to sit in a dark place for 3 months, shaking every so often to get things good and mixed up.

I wasn't quite sure how it would compare to doing this same process with the beans but I was happy to find that it's not only delightfully fragrant but it's also delicious (none of that overly alcohol smell that extract sometimes has). I used a few teaspoons (yes, I kept one of the party favors for myself! :) to make some lemon buttermilk cookies and it worked beautifully! For the packaging, I found the darling labels here and used small glass jars with the tops wrapped in washi tape, just to make them a bit more colorful. I plan on making another batch of the extract soon but next time I am going to try it with bourbon...um, yum! :)

Well, sorta new....

I think I was a dumpster diver in a former life. Ok, so that's kind of gross...let me rephrase. I think I was probably a flea market addict, a bargain hunter, an antique collector...you get the idea. But really, if you ask my husband, I have been known to bring home objects that some might consider garbage. Take my new (well, repurposed) dining room chairs. On our way home a few weeks ago, I saw these beauties sitting on the side of the road near our apartment. Dave, of course, thought I was insane for wanting to drag them inside, but I saw something special in them beyond their ugly 1960s chipped cream paint and ripped green laminate seat exterior. Nothing that a little paint and fabric can't fix, eh? And luckily I was right - several coats of black paint and some updated colorful upholstery later, we had four new dining room chairs. The painting process did take a few days (between stripping them down, painting on the primer and several coats of black paint), however, the seat recovering only took about an hour. All in all the extra labor was totally worth the result. :)

This is what they looked like before...

Seat cushions removed...

Stripped and primed...

I cut the fabric a few inches wider than the seat cushion all the way around and then staple gunned each side once to start.

Once I got all four sides nailed down, I went all the way around with staples while pulling the fabric tight. Then, for the corners, I folded the fabric in (nicely like a present :) and stapled those down as well.

Who me? Fall in love with something sparkly? Shocker. Instantly I knew I wanted to make a wreath out of them so here you go...my very festive glitter ball wreath (shine some lights on it and it's like my own holiday disco ball). I hope you all enjoy it and I wish everyone the merriest of holiday seasons and a wonderful new year!
And I loved the way they turned out so much that I had to make a big jar for the husband and I to enjoy Christmas morning. :)
I am one hour and 42 minutes late with this post. It's been a busy couple of days- our studio had it's biggest job of the year last night, my Mom arrived in town early this morning and we hosted a dinner for nine people tonight. So it's 1:42 a.m. right now I am finally sitting down to do yesterday's post. Today's is a good one though and I think it warrants forgiveness for my tardiness. :)

So, given current my DIY obsession, this year had to be deemed a "homemade holiday" when it came to gift giving. I have two projects that fall into this category (the second will be posted in a few hours :) and this first one made for perfect holiday gifts for my girlfriends. I found this citrus scrub on Pintrest and it originates from Paula Dean's website. It consist of 3 ingredients — sea salt, lemon zest and almond oil (so easy!). I packaged them in small mason jars and downloaded the awesome labels here. They ended up being such a cute gift for my gals and there was even enough scrub left over to make a few jars for myself. :)

But either way, I love how wonky they turned out as it's a bit more my style (just wait till you see my gingerbread house - Martha would definitely NOT approve). :)
I made these a few weeks ago but given that today is the first day of hanukkah, I felt like this was an appropriate day to post this project. These little guys were so easy to make and they look darling sitting at the base of the menorah. I found the little wooden dreidels at the craft store and just covered them with mod podge and some blue glitter. At the same time, I also made a glittered star, which was originally made to be a photo shoot prop for a client's holiday card I was working on (see here for how to make it). I figured I had so much glitter left over from my sparkly ornaments project, why not just spread some more bling around our apartment. :)
I added one more step and coated the backs of the plates with a sealant so that I could use them again next year and the rick-rack around the edges was just an extra touch to make them look more finished. I plan on doing this DIY again next year for some everyday pieces (I'm thinking some covered vases or votive candles?). The plates turned out great and make for perfect serving pieces at a holiday party.
And third, I glued ribbon around my edges, just to add additional detail. I made the coasters for a holiday cocktail party we were having but I am so happy with them that I might keep them out year round. :)
I seem to have so much extra left over from several other holiday projects, so I was happy to use it all up. I first saw the idea for these trees here and all you need to make them (besides the felt) are a few styrofoam cones and some push pins. I used red, green and white felt and then varied the pin colors for different effects. They look so cute scattered around our place. :)

You have the makings for a very stylish chef. :) Now comes the hard part of trying to not eat all the yummy batter. I guess I will have to add "eat less cookies" to my new year's resolutions. Yea right.

And then I remembered all the extra glitter from my snow globes (what can I say, I don't like to waste anything). Add these two together and there you go - frosted pine cones! To get the glitter to stick, I coated the pine cones with spray mount and then I gave them a once over with some clear spray paint. These pretty sparkly little things took no time at all to make and look great scattered amongst our other holiday decor. :)
Lucky you - two for the price of one. :) First, I saw these darling (and super easy to make!) epson salt luminaries here. I decided not to tint mine so I could reuse them year-round with different colored candles. This is a craft I plan on making again, as I think it would be so easy to do this on pretty much anything glass (I'm thinking wine bottles, vases, etc.). The second project is for some simple yet festive place card holders I found here. I already had the mini candy canes on hand for some baking I will be doing later this month and thought these made for a cute addition to this holiday tablescape.
Or at least in our foggy neighborhood they won't. Wasn't it Mark Twain who wrote the phrase "the coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco"? So true. And those of you with a green thumb know that of all the veggies you can plant, tomatoes need sun the most. When we moved into our new place, I had grand ideas of having a garden out back, with the largest and most prominent of my plants being tomatoes. After 7 plants and two huge tomato cages later, let's just say it was an epic fail. I finally gave up on that crop and moved on to what works in colder climates. And finally, now I do have a great garden of root based plants and herbs (hello yummy carrots and radishes!). After a few months of seeing those tomato cage trees sitting lonely and unused, I was thrilled to stumble upon this cute blog post about alternative Christmas Trees. This project was so simple to construct and cost me nothing to make, as I already had the twinkly lights on hand. And hey, I might not have gotten any tomatoes this year but at lease I was able to reuse the cages for some fun holiday decorating.

The only downside is that our cat has taken a liking to it and I don't think she will be too thrilled when her cozy new sleep spot is covered with presents. :)

*The last photo below is kind of random but I had to include it since it's by far my favorite and most treasured holiday decoration. This Santa & Mrs. Claus were passed down to me from my folks and I can't wait to have them out each year! They sit by our tree and since you can kind of see it in the wide shot below, I thought it would be fun to share a closer view of the darling pair sharing a smooch. :)
I have no idea why it's still there, or rather, why I have allowed it to be there. You see, I am a major nester. I am constantly redecorating our place (much to the frustration of my husband) and if I don't like the way something looks, it's usually the first thing to go. And that doormat, ugh! It's been 11 months and it's still there. I think I have been so focused on fixing up the inside of the house that the outside has been ignored. Well, that's about to change. Last week I saw this tutorial for an adorable holiday doormat and I realized this was it - the perfect excuse to chuck that old ugly one. And it was so easy! I got a new straw doormat at Ross for $8 and already had a ton of paint left over from my gold fall pumpkins. I used some cardboard evergreen stencils I had as guides for my triangle trees (just because I'm not so good at freehand drawing) and then filled them in with white paint. I am so happy with the way it turned out and I think this makes for a much better welcome to our new place!
I found them here and just had to make one. All you need is three bottle caps, white glue, colored sharpie markers, glue and ribbon and voila! I hung ours on our bathroom mirror (so fun to see it there every morning!) but I think it's intended use was as a tree ornament. They would also be really cute accent on the front of a holiday gift!
Clearly I am bad at making decisions when feeling smothered. However, something that always goes on my holiday decor list is a poinsettia plant. I love that we only see this plant during this one time each year. Surely they could grow year round, right? For this reason poinsettia's feel so special to me - as if they have been tucked away and grown in secret, only to be brought out in that interim time between Thanksgiving and Christmas to let us all know the holidays have officially arrived. Every year I bring one home and plunk it into whatever pot I have handy at the time, but this year I decided to spruce it up a bit. I saw this darling idea here for a candy cane vase but instead of using glass, I used an old tomato can. I figured I would end up tossing it when the plant eventually kicked it, so why waste a perfectly good vase. I also hot glued the candy canes to the vase instead of using a rubber band, only because I thought it might be a bit sturdier. The best thing about this project was that my entire expense was about $5 (that covered the candy canes and the red paper I used underneath, as everything else I had on hand at home). It looks so cute on our dining room table and I didn't have to wade through endless aisles of holiday decorations just to find it. :)
Amongst Santa's random fillings were small toys and trinkets, oranges and walnuts (hey, he must have wanted me to be healthy right?) and usually a bit of cash (the prized piece) for some post holiday shopping. Seeing the stockings on our mantle through the month of December was always one of my favorite things during the holidays. Sometimes mine was mysteriously stuffed a few days before Christmas and I was convinced it was just to torture me with thoughts of what might be inside. My stocking was handmade by my grandmother and was absolutely gorgeous. Apparently, in a single year she made one for each grandchild and at the time there were about ten of us! For years, I didn't hang any here in San Francisco because I just couldn't find something that was nearly as perfect as the ones she had made. Every holiday season I looked, hoping to find anything that would compare - every year I had no luck.

So this year I decided to make my own (which I think might have been what started this 25 days of DIY in the first place). Back in November I went on a mad google search for some ideas and came across this post. I fell in love with the felt ones and dug out the sewing machine to get started. And then I panicked. What was I thinking! I hadn't sewn anything since college and now I thought I could do this?!?! No way. But then I remembered a friend telling me about a felt project she did once and how well a regular hot glue gun worked wonders with this medium. And guess what? It worked so well that now my sewing machine is back in the corner collecting dust. I do hope to try my hand at sewing again at some point (New Years resolution?), but for now the glue gun might just be my new BFF. While they are not nearly as intricate as the ones my grandmother made years ago, I think they turned out pretty cute. Now comes the fun part of deciding what to put in them (chocolate sounds way better than fruits and nuts). Looks like I will be adding "eating healthy" to my New Year's resolutions as well. :)

I did have a friend tell me yesterday that I had been walking around all day with a piece of glitter on my forehead. But instead of pointing it out, she said she didn't say anything because she liked it there - that little bit of sparkle was kind of nice she said. I liked that.

I first saw these glitter ornaments on Pinterest and was fascinated by the materials used to make them. Floor polish isn't just for floors - who knew! You can find the complete "how to" here and just a word of advice - do wear the recommended gloves and open a window (this stuff can stink!). I used pink and blue glitter in my ornaments and then hung them from a door knob since our tree is already overstuffed with decorations. I love the dainty and delicate look they get from the specs of sparkly in.

Ok, one glitter craft down and several more to go. But maybe first I should humor my husband break out the broom... :)
