The past few days have been busy. I've gotten a lot done. New designs have been laid out. I taught myself some new tricks in Illustrator. I've been sketching up a storm. I created timelines for all my major projects this year.

And yet.

And yet I don't feel like I've done enough.

My word for the year is "focus." It's a good word for me because I tend to take on a lot of projects and end up feeling scattered and overwhelmed. Which, strangely enough, is a perception of me not shared by my peers. They already think I'm focused. I'm not.

This year, I've decided to tie my goals to my word. My goals are to:

But the project will be a textile-based one. And I'll tell you more in March once I've sorted the details out. It's going to be a fun one! I'm so darned excited about it.

Lately, I've felt that the standard online retail model - of having a virtual store open year round, of constantly adding new items to generate interest - is becoming stale for me. My collections take me increasingly long to develop, and I'm moving towards more limited-edition work.

So, I thought, why not have a limited-edition shop?

I rarely send holiday cards. I've tried in past years - even posing for a photo with Jake once - but finally had to acknowledge the fact that I'd never be one of those people who puts together her list, buys her cards, and writes a thoughtful note to each of the 200 people she knows. And as long as I'm childless, I probably won't be writing a gloaty annual Christmas letter, either.

But as I walked around and prepped my apartment - the same place I've been living in since I was 21 - for my birthday party, I tried to remember who my 21-year-old self thought I'd be by the time I turned 37.

One of the benefits of taking an extended vacation was that I could spread my sightseeing out over days, giving me ample time to just sit and paint. Every day, I'd go out and visit museums or markets or walk along the coast, and every afternoon, I'd return to my apartment and paint. It became a ritual.

Actually, it was a mandatory ritual as I owed my trip sponsors a bunch of paintings.
