Ocean City Family Beach Session | Lifestyle Photography

There’s something about the beach in March that feels a little like you’re getting away with something. No crowds. No pressure. No expectations. Just quiet, cold air… and the kind of moments that don’t try too hard to be anything other than what they are. That’s exactly what this session with Hank, Frank, and their humans felt like.

I traveled to Ocean City, Maryland to photograph this session, and these are the kinds of shoots I’ll pack a bag for every single time. Sure the location was pretty kick ass, I mean, it’s THE BEACH. But it’s mostly because of the people. I’ve photographed Amelia and Justin before, starting with their engagement session and wedding, so I already knew this wasn’t going to be a stiff, overly planned kind of session. This was going to be real life.

This is what it looks like when photos actually mean something. Not posed, or trendy or performative. Just some good old real life…with sandy paws and a couple who turned a getaway into a tradition.

She told me ahead of time: “We just want the boys to be themselves.” And that’s exactly what we did. Two dogs running full speed across an empty beach, chasing each other (and by waves), checking in with their humans, getting sand in places they definitely shouldn’t. We had the kind of soft morning light photographers dream about… and at 50 degrees in March, the beach felt like it belonged to us. By the end of it, we had tired out their little legs… and created the kind of images that don’t feel like a photoshoot. They feel like a memory.

What made this session even more special is that Ocean City isn’t just a random place for them. It’s their place. One of their first getaways when they started dating… and now something they return to every year. And now? Hank and Frank are part of that tradition. Same beach. Different chapter. That’s the kind of story I’m always looking for.

After the beach, we made a stop at one of their must-visit spots: Doggie Style, their favorite canine cafe in Ocean City. If you’ve ever loved a dog, you already know… this place is basically Disneyland. Treats, toys, excitement, and two very happy boys who absolutely knew they had hit the jackpot.

This is what I mean when I say I photograph real life. Not the version we think it’s supposed to look like… but the version you’ll actually miss someday.

The traditions.
The chaos.
The in-between moments.

Whether it’s in Blairsville, Pennsylvania or a quiet beach in Maryland, I’ll always choose that over perfectly posed.

And yes… I do travel. For sessions like this? Always.

Hank and Frank are living a doggone good life. And if this is what their “normal” looks like… I’d say they’re doing it exactly right.

If your life feels full right now…this is your sign to document it. Dogs, kids, chaos and all.

Reach out here → www.jenmcken.com
Let’s create something that actually feels like you.

Yes! I photograph sessions throughout Western Pennsylvania and travel for meaningful locations like Ocean City, Maryland and beyond.

What It’s Really Like Behind the Scenes at a Wedding

A Wedding Photographer’s Perspective

If you’ve ever been to a wedding, you probably see the photographer floating around quietly with a camera.

What you don’t see is the 10,000 tiny decisions happening every hour behind the scenes.

After photographing weddings for more than two decades here in Blairsville, Pennsylvania, and across Indiana County and Western Pennsylvania, I can tell you this:

A wedding photographer’s job is part artist, part problem solver/Macgyver, part timeline manager… and occasionally part therapist. And, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

The Wedding Day Starts Long Before the Ceremony

Most wedding days begin long before the guests arrive.

When I walk into a getting-ready room, the energy is usually a mix of: excitement, nerves, chaos and about nine different people asking where their shoes are.

This is where I start quietly documenting the real story. The dress hanging in the window. The bridesmaids laughing on the bed. Mom watching everything unfold. These moments are the emotional foundation of the day. They’re also the ones couples often don’t realize are happening until they see their gallery.

The Best Moments Are Almost Never Planned

Some of my favorite wedding photos happen in between the official events. The flower girl falling asleep under a table. A dad wiping his eyes when he thinks no one is looking. Friends laughing on the dance floor like they’re back in college.

These are the moments I’m quietly watching for all day. They’re the ones that turn wedding photos from a checklist into a real story.

Sometimes the Photographer Is Also the Calm in the Room

One thing couples rarely expect is how much emotional energy exists on a wedding day. There are happy tears. Nervous energy. Occasionally a little family drama.

Over the years I’ve learned that part of my role is simply helping people breathe and enjoy the moment. I’ve helped brides bustle dresses, pinned boutonnieres, fixed veils, and reassured more nervous grooms than I can count. The camera might be the tool. But the real job is making people feel comfortable enough to be present.

Weddings Move Fast (Really Fast)

A wedding day is essentially a series of small events stacked on top of each other. And every one of them matters.

Behind the scenes I’m constantly watching the timeline while also staying flexible when things inevitably shift.

Hair runs late. A boutonnière disappears. Grandma needs a chair.

My job is to keep the day moving smoothly without anyone feeling rushed. Because the best photos don’t come from pressure. They come from people feeling comfortable enough to just be themselves.

The Photographer Is Always Watching the Light

One of the biggest things happening behind the scenes is something most people never notice: Light.

Every few minutes I’m thinking about:

where the light is coming from

how it’s changing

where the best window light is

how to position people naturally without making it feel posed

Sometimes it means gently moving someone two feet to the left. Sometimes it means chasing sunset across a field like we’re filming the final scene of a movie. The goal is always the same: Make everything feel natural while still creating beautiful images.

By the End of the Night…

After the dance floor is packed and the final hugs happen, I pack up my gear knowing something pretty special just took place. A wedding day goes by incredibly fast for the couple. But photography slows it down.

It turns a blur of moments into something you can return to again and again. And that’s why I love this job. Every wedding is different, but the goal is always the same: Create photographs that feel like you. Not stiff. Not staged. Just honest.

FAQ

What does a wedding photographer actually do all day?

A wedding photographer documents everything from getting ready through the reception while also managing lighting, guiding portraits, and capturing candid moments throughout the day..and sometimes telling Aunt Betty to back off because that’s not what the Bride wants. (kidding not kidding)

How many hours does a wedding photographer typically work?

Most wedding days involve 8–10 hours of photography coverage, plus many additional hours of preparation, editing, and gallery design afterward.

Do photographers help with the wedding timeline?

Yes. Experienced photographers often help couples structure a timeline that allows for relaxed portraits, meaningful moments, and the best natural lighting.

This weekend Levi was digging through an old box of vacation photos. You know the kind, bent corners, and a little faded. Back when we printed things instead of just swiping past them.

He pulled one out and just sat down on the floor studying it. It was a photo of the two of us when he was little. He couldn’t have been more than six months old. It was our first beach trip with him. I still had my baby weight. I was exhausted. Probably running on no sleep. I remember feeling puffy. I remember thinking I needed to “get back on track.” You know… that phase we’re always in. Especially after having kids. That pressure to “snap back.” The second I saw the photo, my brain did what brains do.

Why was I sitting like that? Why didn’t I fix my hair? Oh my gosh… I have like five chins. Why on earth did I keep this?

None of that came out of my mouth. Instead, I told him how we were waiting for everyone to finish getting ready so we could go to dinner… and how we always waited until the very last minute to dress him because he would make a mess immediately. I was also trying to keep him occupied and out of the sand so I started playing with my phone to stop him from crawling away. He loves when I tell stories about himself as a baby. All the while, that other conversation was still running quietly in my head.

Then he smiled, like really smiled, and said: “Mom. You look so pretty here.”

And I kind of laughed at first… but it stopped me. Because we were in the same space, looking at the same photo, and having two completely different conversations. Inside my head, I was editing myself. In his world? He was just seeing his mom. He didn’t see angles. He didn’t see weight. He didn’t see anything I was picking apart. He saw the way I was holding him. He saw closeness. He saw love. And I just sat there thinking… thank God I didn’t delete that photo. Because that’s the one he loves. Not the polished ones. Not the “good angle” ones. The one where I was just there. That did something to me.

In a world where social media constantly shows us the most polished pieces of everyone else’s lives, it’s easy to fall into that knee-jerk reaction of criticizing ourselves. We look at photos with our kids and immediately notice our hair, our clothes, our weight…all the things that didn’t feel “perfect” in that moment. And sometimes, because of that, we quietly erase ourselves from the picture. But our kids don’t see those things the way we do.

They see the way we held them.
The way we laughed with them.
The way we were there.

So come hang out in the studio. Be playful with your kids. Be present with them while I capture it. Because one day, these will be the photos they keep, the ones they’ll look back on and say, “Mom, you were so pretty.”

Proof you were there. Proof they were loved.

I’m keeping these sessions limited so each one feels intentional.

What to Wear?

…because I know that’s what’s going on inside your head right now! I’m not looking for perfectly styled outfits, just for real connection. Keeping wardrobe simple (neutrals, denim, bare feet, comfortable pieces) helps the focus stay where it belongs: on the way your kids hold onto you and the way you show up for them.

All the Birds in the Nest (Just for a Minute Longer)

There are sessions that are about outfits and locations…
and then there are sessions that are about timing.

This one was the second kind.

Becky reached out because her son, Donovan, was coming home for just a few days before shipping out with the Marines. No big production. No pressure to be anywhere “pretty.” Just one request: a family photo before everything changes.

February in Pennsylvania is cold, so we stayed inside but even if it had been 70 and sunny, their home still would’ve been the right choice.

We photographed them right where life actually happens.

At the kitchen table.
Playing Uno.
Surrounded by familiar walls, familiar laughter, and the quiet comfort of being together.

As a mom myself, I felt it immediately. This wasn’t about a Christmas card or a wall canvas (though those may come). This was about holding all the birds in the nest for one last second before one of them flies farther than ever before.

Darrell-dad, backbone, fixer of all things, anchored the room the same way he anchors their family.
Becky-mom, nurse, the one who usually takes the photos, finally got to be in them.
Alivia, 11 and already grown in that blink-and-you’ll-miss-it way, laughed easily with her big brother.
And Donovan-fresh out of basic training, sat at the same table he’s probably sat at a thousand times… but this time, it meant something different.

These images won’t be hanging in a museum.
They won’t win awards or go viral.

But in 30 years?

They’ll look at the background and remember the kitchen chairs.
They’ll laugh about Uno games and inside jokes.
They’ll remember how it felt to be together before life scattered them into new seasons.

And that…that quiet, ordinary, deeply personal meaning, is exactly why I do this.

Because photography isn’t always about stopping time.
Sometimes it’s just about giving it somewhere safe to live.

And from mom to mom, who no longer has all my own birds in the nest, these are tiny little time capsules.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-45946" src="https://jenmckenphoto.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/2026-02-06_0002.jpg"

A Moody Little Studio Experiment

Every once in a while, I just need to play.

I recently bought some new lights and instead of overthinking them, I decided to experiment and see what felt fun. No big plan. No pressure. Just good music, moody light, and a little curiosity.

This shoot started with a loose speakeasy-inspired vibe…warm lamps, low light, and that quiet, confident after-hours feeling. Was it meant to be historically accurate? Nope. Was it meant to be interesting? Absolutely.

I played with shadows, let the light fall where it wanted, and focused more on mood than perfection. Some images feel bold, some feel soft, and some just feel like a moment you walked in on.

Sessions like this are how I stay inspired and keep my work evolving. What I experiment with here always finds its way into my senior, branding, and women’s sessions, sometimes in obvious ways, sometimes subtly.

Sometimes the best ideas come from turning the lights down and seeing what happens.

Lots of laughs were had regardless! haha!

When Play Turns Into Progress: Why Creative Shoots Matter

(and why Holly was the perfect muse)

Every once in a while, I need to shake the dust off the studio…not because I’m bored, but because I refuse to get comfortable AND because I have fun photography friends like Amanda who want to come over and help experiment! It’s our equivalent to Girls Night! haha.

I recently brought in new lights and instead of waiting for a “perfect” paid session to test them, I did what fuels me most: I played. I experimented. I made a little creative chaos (the good kind). I put out a model call, turned the music up, and let curiosity lead.

Holly was one of the first to respond she was exactly the kind of energy this shoot needed.

Meet Holly

Holly Fisher is an 11th grader at Marion Center Area Jr/Sr High School, and she walked into the studio with full “put me on a runway” confidence. She’s a dancer of 14 years, a three-time lettered cheerleader, and someone who’s already lived through more than her fair share of unexpected challenges.

Her vibe in three words? Fun. Confident. Quiet. That combo is magic in front of the camera.

She showed up ready to move, laugh, try things, and trust the process: sparkly blue dress, long silver gown, full energy activated.

This Is How I Keep Evolving

The creative risks I take in sessions like this directly impact the confidence, artistry, and variety I can offer future clients, whether that’s a senior wanting something bold, a brand needing personality, or a woman stepping into her power in front of the camera.

These kinds of shoots allow me to:

Test new lighting techniques without pressure

Experiment with color, shadow, and movement

Push beyond what I’ve done before

Refine ideas I later bring into senior, commercial, and branding sessions

After 20+ years in photography, evolution isn’t optional.

I don’t want my work to feel stale.
I don’t want my clients to get “safe” versions of me.
I want every session, paid or creative, to sharpen my eye and expand what’s possible.

Creative shoots like this are where new ideas are born.
They’re where future techniques are tested.
They’re where joy sneaks back into the work.

I’ll never stop making space for them, especially when I buy fun new toys.

Holly, thank you for trusting me, showing up fully, and letting me turn you all kinds of colors.

This kind of creative play fuels my senior, branding, and commercial sessions—and yes, it can absolutely be woven into a regular session. If you’re ready for imagery that actually reflects your personality, let’s talk.

When Love Feels Like Safety

Some weddings are loud in the way they celebrate.
Others are quiet in the way they love.

This one was both.

In late January, I photographed an intimate Nikkah ceremony at the groom’s parents’ home just outside Pittsburgh. About forty people. Winter light. Family gathered close. No stage, no spectacle, just presence, intention, and a deep sense that this moment mattered.

This was the first chapter of their wedding story, a religious ceremony rooted in tradition, family, and faith, ahead of a larger summer celebration later this year. But standing in that living room, it was clear: this wasn’t a “small” wedding. It was a significant one.

The Kind of Love That Doesn’t Leave

There’s a moment couples often point to when they say, “Yep. This is my person.”

For her, it wasn’t grand or cinematic. It was quiet. Ordinary. And everything.

Early in their relationship, her experienced a panic attack while the two of them were spending a calm night together. Anyone who lives with anxiety knows the feeling …the sudden heat, the nausea, the urge to escape, the apology spiral.

He didn’t panic. He didn’t minimize it. He didn’t make it about himself.

He walked her out, hugged her, told her it was okay, and meant it.

Later, She gave him an easy out. She explained her anxiety, her years of therapy and medication, and told him she would understand if it was too much.

He shut it down immediately.

Why would I mind? I’m not going anywhere.

And then he proved it… again and again.

That’s the kind of love that doesn’t just say the right thing in the moment.
It stays.

A Blended Wedding, Led by Family

Blended weddings don’t just blend cultures…they blend values.

He comes from a Pakistani family. She comes from a Turkish and Irish-American family. In both cultures, family isn’t background noise, it’s the foundation. Decisions are shared. Elders are honored. Love is something that shows up early, stays involved, and holds weight.

That’s why this Nikkah took place at home.
That’s why January mattered, it was about togetherness.

Her grandmother, who lives in Turkey, had been visiting unexpectedly for several months, something rare and deeply meaningful. She had told her that all she wanted was to see her get married. She even brought special earrings with her, asking her mom to give them to her on her wedding day.

When you understand that context, you realize this ceremony wasn’t rushed…it was chosen.

A Proposal That Felt Like Being Known

In many Pakistani and Turkish families, engagements aren’t always surprises. Family involvement matters. Intentions are discussed openly. That doesn’t make the moment less romantic, it makes it more intentional.

He still wanted to propose in a way that felt like them.

So instead of a public spectacle, he chose privacy. Candles. Flowers. Their space. He proposed before dinner , because he knew she hates anticipation and wanted her to be able to relax and actually enjoy the night.

When she told him how relieved she was, he smiled and said he knew.

To be loved is to be known.

The Little Things That Tell the Real Story

What stood out most during this Nikkah weren’t the formalities- it was the in-between moments.

The grounding touches, the kind meant to steady, not perform.
The way he instinctively steadied her.
The calm to her chaos.
The way laughter threaded through even the most meaningful moments.

They’re the couple who:

“Rot” on the couch with takeout and blankets

Flip through football games while asking a million questions

Hug in the cold next to the car before heading home

Know each other by scent, habit, and rhythm

Balance logic and creativity without trying to change each other

Different families. Different energies. The same commitment to peace, respect, and showing up.

Why Photographing This Mattered to Me

There was another layer of trust in this wedding that didn’t start with a Google search or a pricing page.

Her mom remembered me from an article years ago …the one where I publicly refused to photograph former high school bullies. It stuck with her. Because it said something about values. About boundaries. About character.

When she later described why my work resonated with her, it had nothing to do with trends or aesthetics.

She told me that in so many wedding photos, especially in large, cultural celebrations, the images feel chaotic. Busy. Murky. You don’t know where to look. The moment gets lost in the crowd.

But in mine, no matter how much is happening, the focus is always clear.

That matters , especially to someone who doesn’t feel naturally comfortable in front of a camera. Especially in rooms filled with emotion, movement, and meaning. Especially in weddings like this one, where every glance, every touch, every quiet exchange carries weight.

That clarity isn’t accidental.

It’s how I see the world.
It’s how I photograph love.
And it’s why stories like they deserve to be held with intention.

Looking Ahead

This January Nikkah was intimate, sacred, and deeply rooted in family.

In June, they will celebrate again …bigger, louder, and surrounded by even more people who love them. But the heart of their story won’t change.

It will still be about choosing each other calmly.
Staying when it’s hard.
And building a life that feels safe.

It’s an honor to be trusted with stories like this.

“You Can Fix That in Photoshop-Right?”: Tales From a Wedding Photographer

If you’ve ever worked with me, you already know I show up to every wedding armed with two cameras, way too many snacks, and an equally ridiculous sense of humor. Consider this my little comedy hour …a tongue-in-cheek peek into the chaos, the characters, and the moments that make me laugh after I’ve finished editing 1,500 photos and consumed an alarming amount of caffeine.

I genuinely love what I do. I love my couples. And if you’ve ever been in front of my camera, you already know , I bring the humor with me. This isn’t a complaint list or a cry for help (though, caffeine donations are always welcome). It’s just me pulling back the curtain, laughing at the madness, and maybe –just maybe- giving you a glimpse of why wedding photographers deserve both hazard pay and therapy.

Alright, that’s enough storytelling for today…excuse me while I go find the cookie table. Priorities, people.

Future Bestseller: The (Mostly) True Stories Behind Wedding Photography

1. How to Avoid the Church Ladies

Because they will tell you how to do your job, stand directly in the background of your shots, and give you dirty looks if you so much as breathe near the altar. You’ll know them instantly, their perfume hits before their judgment does. They’ve been volunteering here since Moses was a baby, and they take that power very seriously.

They’ll remind you (loudly) that “flash photography isn’t allowed”… even if the priest just told you it was fine. They’ll rearrange floral arrangements mid-ceremony because “it’ll look better for God.” They’ll scold you for walking down the wrong aisle, then ask for a copy of the photos afterward.

Pro tip: if you see a cardigan with shoulder pads and a name tag that says Ethel, proceed with caution. Smile, nod, and pretend to write something down when they give “suggestions.” You’re not going to win this battle—just pray the organ starts playing loud enough to drown out the unsolicited direction.

2. Editing Depends on How Nice She Was to Me

Lightroom runs on kindness (and caffeine). If you were sweet, patient, and treated me like a human instead of a hired servant, I will spend hours lovingly smoothing your skin, whitening your teeth, and editing that one flyaway that’s been haunting me since 10 p.m.

But if you snapped your fingers at me, barked orders, or rolled your eyes when I asked you to move two inches to the left… well, let’s just say the “artistic choices” start looking a little different. You were mean to me? Congrats, you now have slightly bigger arms, duller teeth, and I’m using my wide-angle lens in all the wrong ways. Oops, distortion happens.

Editing is basically emotional revenge therapy with sliders. Be nice to your photographer…we control your jawline. I’m looking at your Bridesmaid Becky.

3. Have I Just Lost All Control? Or: The Drunk Wedding Party’s Guide to Chaos.

You know that moment when you look around and realize you’ve officially lost the room? The groomsmen are chugging Fireball in the back of the party bus, the bridesmaids have turned the bouquet into a microphone, and the best man is missing, last seen “checking on the limo.” The DJ’s playing Shots by LMFAO, the timeline is dead, and I’m just standing there with my camera like a war correspondent documenting the fall of civilization.

This is the moment I stop posing people and start praying for usable frames. Someone always decides they’re a model now, “Wait, get one of me doing this!”, and suddenly I’m photographing what looks like a Dollar General version of a Vogue editorial.

The drunker they get, the more “creative” they become. By the end of the night, I’ve got a groomsman laying on the dance floor doing snow angels in spilled beer and a bridesmaid trying to convince me to take “just one” more photo even though she’s blinking on a four-second delay.

And through it all, I just smile, keep shooting, and whisper to myself: You’re being paid. You’re being paid. You’re being paid.

4. Did You Have to Put That There?

No, I can’t make the fire extinguisher look “whimsical,” Sharon.

Every wedding has that person , the well-meaning decorator, venue staff member, or distant relative who decided that the best place for the trash can, exit sign, or massive industrial fan was directly behind the first kiss.

I walk into venues like a bomb squad member scanning for background hazards. Giant “EXIT” sign above the altar? Check. Folding chair graveyard in the corner? Double check. DJ’s tangled extension cords running through my frame like it’s modern art? Triple check.

And don’t even get me started on the random clutter that appears right as I lift my camera: half-empty Starbucks cups, baby strollers, Diet Coke cans, and purses thrown on the ceremony arch like it’s a coat rack.

Sure, I could “fix it in Photoshop,” but do you know how long it takes to clone out an entire trash bin? Hint: longer than the actual ceremony. So no, I can’t make the fire extinguisher look romantic, the thermostat “blend in,” or the random groomsman’s vape cloud look ethereal.

Pro tip: before the ceremony starts, look around and ask yourself, “Would I want this immortalized forever?” If the answer’s no… move it.

5. Fix Your Face

Because someone’s always mid-chew, mid-blink, or mid-eye-roll behind the bride.

You are in the background of the photos whether you realize it or not, so maybe, just maybe, stop glaring like you’re plotting your escape. Every wedding has that one guest who forgets the photographer’s job is to capture everything. You think you’re invisible because you’re off to the side? Nope. Congratulations, you’re now immortalized forever behind the bride with the exact expression of someone who just smelled bad shrimp.

I can’t tell you how many gorgeous, emotional moments I’ve captured, bride crying, groom beaming, sunlight streaming through the window….and then there it is. You. Arms crossed. Scowling. Eating your dinner roll with the intensity of a mugshot.

So, friendly reminder: if you’re anywhere near a camera, assume you’re in the shot. Smile. Laugh. Pretend to enjoy yourself. Because in 30 years, when your grandkids are flipping through that album, you don’t want them asking, “Grandma, why did you hate love?”

6. Girl, I Know You’re Not Wearing Gutchies

A cautionary tale about sheer dresses and questionable underwear choices.

Listen. I love confidence. I love self-expression. I love when people feel free enough to drop it like it’s hot on the dance floor.
But I also love not knowing you that intimately.

When the DJ turns up “Yeah!” by Usher and you’re out there throwing it back like you’re auditioning for a Vegas residency, just know: I can see straight into your soul. My camera catches everything. And later, when I’m editing on a BIG computer monitor, I’m zoomed in way closer than either of us ever wanted.

There are some things you just can’t unsee, like the color, texture, and possibly brand of what’s (not) happening under that dress. MEOW.

So please, for the love of modesty and my eyeballs, do a quick mirror check before hitting the dance floor. Remember: the flash sees all, and Photoshop is powerful, but it ain’t that powerful.

7. “You Can Fix That in Photoshop”

Sure, I’ll just go to Hogwarts for that level of magic.

Ah yes, the six words that haunt every photographer’s dreams. The universal phrase uttered at every wedding, by every person, at every inconvenient moment. “You can fix that in Photoshop,” they say, as if I have a wand instead of a Wacom pen.

You blinked in every photo? No problem, I’ll just open your eyes using telepathy. Your ex showed up uninvited and stood in the family portraits? Great, let me just de-ex him real quick. You spilled red wine down your ivory dress? Accio, Tide Pen!

Look, Photoshop can do a lot, but it can’t fix bad decisions, bad lighting, or bad attitudes. I can tweak colors, smooth skin, maybe remove that random exit sign, but when you ask me to add someone who didn’t attend the wedding, make you look “10 years younger,” or “remove 30 pounds but keep my boobs the same,” that’s no longer editing. That’s sorcery.

So no, I can’t fix your cousin’s mullet, your sunburn, or your regret. I’m a photographer, not a magician.

8. “Hey Camera Girl! You Might Wanna Go Get That!”

Every uncle thinks he’s the director of photography.

There’s always one. Usually wearing cargo shorts, sunglasses on his head, and holding a lukewarm beer. He spots something “important” happening, like the ring bearer picking his nose, and suddenly decides he’s Spielberg. “Hey camera girl! You might wanna go get that!”

First of all, I’ve already got it. I saw it five seconds before you did. Because here’s the thing: there are two photographers here, moving like stealthy little wedding ninjas. We’ve clocked the moments, anticipated the chaos, and are already three steps ahead while you’re still narrating what’s happening in real time.

I promise…we see it. We see everything. The problem is, you snapping your fingers and pointing like a crossing guard doesn’t help.

9. I’m a Photographer Too (So What Lens Is That?)

Ah yes, because you took that one photo of your dog in 2012.

There’s always one. The well-meaning cousin, groomsman, or aunt who dusted off their DSLR just in time to “talk shop” during the ceremony. I’ll be mid-pose, directing a 20-person bridal party, and hear it from the sidelines:

“I’m a photographer too!”

That’s adorable. I bet you still have that Canon Rebel Life neck strap and an SD card full of sunsets, dogs, and latte art.

And right on cue comes the follow-up question:

“So, what lens are you using?”

It’s like a secret handshake, except instead of respect, it’s code for I once watched half a YouTube tutorial on aperture.

Listen, I truly love the enthusiasm. Photography’s awesome! But this isn’t a backyard golden retriever shoot—, it’s a full-blown, emotionally charged, high-speed circus with timelines, low lighting, tequila-fueled bridal parties, and moms wielding Pinterest boards like ancient scrolls of power.

Meanwhile, you’re hovering over my shoulder, whispering about ISO settings while I’m trying to keep 200 humans coordinated and not blinking simultaneously.

It’s all love though, grab a drink, hit the dance floor, and let me handle the chaos. I promise I’ll make it look so effortless that you’ll want to dig out your camera again.

10.“Can You Photoshop Grandma In?”

She wasn’t at the wedding, but sure, let’s summon her spirit.

This one always starts so innocently. I deliver the gallery, they love it, and then I get the message: “Hey, can you Photoshop Grandma in? She couldn’t make it that day.”

Ah yes, of course, let me just consult my Ouija board and open up the Adobe Afterlife Suite. I’ll plop her right between the maid of honor and the cake, floating slightly off the ground for dramatic effect. Should she be wearing her Sunday best or something more “ethereal”?

Here’s the thing: I get it. You miss Grandma. We all love Grandma. But unless she’s standing in the actual photo, I can’t magically materialize her from the great beyond. (Trust me, if I could, I’d start with my own relatives and maybe a few missing groomsmen.)

Sometimes people think Photoshop is a time machine, cloning lab, and spiritual portal all in one…and honestly, if it were, I’d be retired on an island somewhere by now.

So, until Adobe releases Photoshop Resurrection Edition, maybe let’s just honor Grandma the old-fashioned way… a toast in her name.

11.Reception Lighting and Other Forms of Torture

Because who doesn’t love magenta uplighting?

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to photograph a wedding reception, imagine trying to capture elegant, emotional moments inside a nightclub from a 2003 Pitbull music video.

One minute, the couple’s sharing their first dance in a romantic golden glow. The next minute, the DJ hits a button and suddenly everyone looks like they’re being interrogated inside a cotton-candy factory. Magenta. Blue. Green. Strobe. It’s a rave. I’m sweating. The camera’s crying.

Uplighting is the wedding world’s greatest optical illusion. It looks amazing to the guests, fun, festive, fancy, but to a photographer? It’s like chasing natural light through a disco ball. There’s no preset in Lightroom called “Electric Purple Face Correction.”

So I do what any professional does: adjust my white balance, pray to the photography gods, and silently question every life decision that led me here while the best man gives a speech under the world’s brightest blue spotlight.

Pro tip: if you ever want to know who your true wedding MVP is, it’s the photographer calmly editing your neon-pink reception photos at 1 a.m. with a bottle of wine and a tear in their eye.

12. The Timeline That Time Forgot

When the hair and makeup “ran 10 minutes late” (translation: 90).

Ah, the wedding day timeline , a beautifully color-coded spreadsheet that was created with the best of intentions and absolutely no grasp of reality. It always starts strong: 8:00 a.m. hair and makeup, 10:00 a.m. dress on, 10:30 a.m. first look, 11:00 a.m. portraits… and by noon, we’re already an hour and a half behind, praying to the timeline gods for mercy.

It’s never anyone’s fault exactly, just the perfect storm of curling irons, fake lashes, mimosas, and a bridesmaid who “just needs to touch up her eyeliner real quick.” Hair and makeup will always swear they’re “just ten minutes behind,” which roughly translates to “your first look will now take place during sunset.”

Meanwhile, I’m in the corner recalculating every photo on the list like a NASA launch schedule, smiling politely while mentally editing out the panic.

But here’s the truth: somehow, it always works out. We may sprint through portraits, the officiant might get a little creative with the order of events, and dinner might be fashionably late, but love still gets documented, and everyone still ends up on the dance floor by the end of the night.

Still… if you want to make your photographer’s eye twitch, just say, “Don’t worry, we’ll catch up on the timeline later.”

13. Can You Make Me Look Thinner?”

Sure, I’ll just crop out 70% of the frame.

Ah yes, the classic request that has haunted photographers since the dawn of digital editing. It usually comes whispered mid-session, right after someone sees the back of the camera: “Can you make me look thinner?”

Well, sure! I’ll just hit the “Slim Me Down But Keep My Boobs the Same” button, it’s right next to the “Make Me Look Like I Slept Eight Hours and Eat Kale Daily” filter.

Listen, I get it. We all have our insecurities (yes, even the girl behind the camera). But here’s the thing: my job isn’t to make you look thinner, it’s to make you look like you on your best, most joy-filled day. Because confidence photographs way better than Photoshop ever will.

Of course, if you were mean to me earlier in the day, I might “accidentally” pick the wide-angle lens. Kidding! (Mostly.)

So yes, I’ll pose you in flattering light, guide you to angles that show off your best features, and help you feel amazing…but the real magic isn’t in Photoshop. It’s in the genuine smile that happens when you forget the camera’s even there.

14.“At This Point, I’m Basically Family”

Because I’ve seen you in your underwear, cried with your mom, and eaten your chicken.

By the time I photograph a wedding, I’ve been through it with you. I’ve seen the nerves, the happy tears, the pre-ceremony chaos, and the dance floor disasters. I’ve been in the dressing room helping zip a dress, handed tissues to dads trying not to cry, and cheered from behind my camera like a proud cousin.

And yeah, I joke a lot…because humor is how I survive 12-hour days, unpredictable weather, drunk uncles, and magenta uplighting. But underneath all the sarcasm is something real: I love this job. I love my couples. I love that every single one of my brides gets me, the humor, the chaos, the honesty…and trusts me to document one of the biggest days of their lives.

So while I may joke about writing this book when I retire, the truth is… I already know how it ends. It ends with gratitude. With laughter. With hundreds of love stories I got to be part of, if only for a day.

Because at this point, I’m basically family and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

No one ever passed down a USB drive. This personal essay explores loss, memory, and why photo albums—not digital files—are what truly get passed down.

No One Ever Passed Down a USB Drive

And yet, for years, we’ve trusted digital files to preserve our most important family memories—while printed photo albums quietly do the work of real legacy.

I’ve been photographing people for a long time. Long enough to know that one day, many years from now, no one is going to sit a grandchild down on their knee, clear their throat, and say: “Someday… this USB will be yours.” Digital files don’t age the way memories do. They don’t soften. They don’t gather meaning. They don’t survive neglect. They just… disappear. It’s the equivalent of writing your life story on a napkin and trusting it to survive floods, moves, broken laptops, and the quiet chaos of everyday life. Digital feels permanent until it isn’t. And when it goes, it goes without ceremony.

I chose photography because I learned, too early, that real life is fragile. When my sister died, the world didn’t stop. It didn’t announce itself. There was no warning that this version of life was about to end. One day she was here, and then she wasn’t…and everything after felt divided into before and after, even if no one else could see the line.

What I remember most isn’t one single moment. It’s the way time collapsed. How memories suddenly felt precious and unreliable at the same time. How I became afraid of forgetting the small things, the sound of her laugh, the way she stood with her head tipped just a little to the side, the ordinary moments that never felt important until they were all I had left.

I learned then that people can disappear without asking permission. There’s divorce, there’s death, ending of friendships, people move across the country. Just like people can suddenly go without any warning, moments can, too…unless you find a way to hold onto them.

So I became someone who documents.

Not in the way that chases perfection or trends or validation, but in the way that says, This mattered. This existed. This was real…even if it didn’t last forever. Photography became my way of pressing pause on a world that rarely slows down long enough to let you breathe.

Somewhere along the way, I started noticing what people actually keep.

Not files.
Not folders.
Not things that require an adapter.

They keep objects that ask to be opened and held with their actual hands.

Albums that smell faintly like basements and time. Pages that stick together just enough to remind you they’ve been visited before. Photographs with soft edges and fingerprints, because someone held them longer than they meant to. Albums don’t live in junk drawers or tech boxes labeled misc. They live on coffee tables. On shelves. Within reach. They are stumbled upon. And that matters more than we realize.

Digital images live behind intention. You have to decide to look for them. You have to remember where they are, which device holds them, which password still works. Albums interrupt you. They invite curiosity. They sit quietly until someone opens them by accident and stays longer than they planned.

I’ve watched people lose entire chapters of their lives to failed hard drives and forgotten logins. I’ve watched panic set in when they realize the only copies of certain moments lived on a device that no longer turns on. Digital requires maintenance. Albums require presence. You don’t need Wi-Fi to remember. You don’t need an update. You don’t need to remember who you were when you created the account.

You just open the book.

Albums are slower. And that’s the point.

You can’t scroll past a moment too quickly. You can’t multitask while holding one. You can’t skim without noticing something you forgot mattered. Albums ask you to sit. To linger. To notice the way someone stood, the way they smiled, the way a hand rested on a shoulder. They make kids ask questions. They make stories spill out that no one realized were still there.

I was never after perfection.

I was always after something else.

Something that could outlast technology. Something that didn’t rely on electricity or memory or maintenance. Something that could be held by someone who never met me and still feel connected to the life that came before them.

One day, someone will open an album and recognize a laugh. They’ll notice a familiar hand. They’ll see themselves in someone they miss. And they won’t say, “I wish this was digital.” They won’t wish it loaded faster or took up less space.

They’ll probably say nothing at all.

I Was Always After Something Else

Real Life Is Becoming the Luxury

I didn’t start photographing people because I loved cameras. I loved what cameras let me keep.

There’s a difference.

Sometimes the moments that matter most happen when no one is watching.

I’ve been paying attention to the conversations about AI lately, the think pieces, the panic posts, the hot takes about creativity being replaced and I keep waiting to feel afraid. I keep waiting for that “oh no” moment everyone else seems to be having.

It hasn’t come.

Maybe it’s because photography has never felt like a trend to me. It felt more like a response. A response to how fast life moves, how quietly it changes, and how often we don’t realize we’re in the middle of something important until it’s already gone.

The conversations around AI and creativity is everywhere. Articles, reels, captions written with a kind of urgency that suggests we’re all supposed to be panicking together. Everything is changing. Nothing will be the same. Creatives should be worried.

I’ve heard versions of this before in my 22+ years in the industry. It seems to come in cycles, kind of like when digital cameras replaced film, that was supposed to be the end. When phones got good enough, that was supposed to be the final blow. When social media took over, photography became content instead of something personal. And now AI has entered the chat, and once again, I’m being asked if I’m worried.

I’m not.

I didn’t get into photography because it was impressive or cutting-edge. I got into it because real life doesn’t stay put. People change in ways you don’t notice until you’re already missing the version of them that existed five minutes ago. Kids grow without asking permission. Relationships shift-trust me, I know…I’m divorced. Homes change hands. Some people leave earlier than they were supposed to. We’ve all grieved a loved one gone too soon. Photography felt like a way to slow things down just enough to say, “This mattered.”

This is what presence looks like.

I Don’t Photograph for the Internet

AI can make images. That part isn’t debatable. It can generate beautiful ones, too. The perfect lighting, flawless skin, a thousand versions of the same face. But that was never the reason I showed up for this work. I don’t sit with people because I’m chasing perfection. I sit with them because there’s always something happening under the surface, and most of the time, they don’t realize it yet.

I walk into rooms and feel things before anyone says a word. I notice when someone is nervous, or when a smile feels a little practiced, or when someone hasn’t been photographed in years because they quietly decided they didn’t belong in the frame anymore. AI doesn’t pick up on that. It can study faces, but it can’t earn trust. It doesn’t know history. It doesn’t know loss. It doesn’t know why this moment matters more than all the others.

What’s interesting is that the more artificial everything becomes, the more people seem to crave what’s real. Slower moments. Less polish. Things that feel lived in. Luxury used to mean impressive. Now it feels quieter. More intentional. More…might I say….human.

I don’t photograph things for the internet. I photograph them for later. For the version of you who will forget how this season felt. For the moment when you realize that the ordinary day you almost skipped documenting turned out to be something you’d give anything to see again.

Not posed. Not perfect. Just real.

People assume photographers are competing with AI, but I don’t feel like we’re even in the same lane. AI can replicate a style. It can’t replicate attachment. It doesn’t understand why someone wants photos of the house they’re about to leave, or why a woman wants to be photographed even though she doesn’t recognize herself anymore. It doesn’t understand the weight certain images carry.

I’ve watched trends come and go, and what lasts is never the technology. It’s the need to remember. As images become easier to create, the ones that mean something stand out more, not less. Meaning still requires presence, and presence still requires a human being paying attention.

This is what later looks like.

I’m Not Going Anywhere

So no, I’m not going anywhere.

Not because I’m resisting change, but because what I do was never built on something replaceable. I’ve never believed that photography was about keeping up. It was about holding on. About noticing the ordinary before it disappears. About choosing to remember, even when it would be easier not to. AI can generate anything it wants. I’ll still be here, quietly doing the human work of making sure real life doesn’t slip by unnoticed.

Worst case scenario?
AI takes over everything and I still end up being the person people call when they want something real.
Honestly? I’ve built my entire career on that.
