Our resident MC Vikki Stone (apparently a cross between Victoria Wood and Jack Black) will welcome to the stage…

ISY SUTTIE (Dobby from The Peep Show)

One of the most innovative acts to emerge on the circuit in recent times, Isy’s gloriously silly and twisted songs, stand-up and stories have drawn comparisons with Victoria Wood and Tom Lehrer.

“Her songs were hypnotic: blending hilarity, lyrical brilliance and pathos so adeptly” Chortle.co.uk

“Multi-talented musical supremo’ - TIME OUT.

TOM ADAMS

He’s a bespectacled worrier with a side parting and a lack of social skills. We love him, and file into the night feeling better about ourselves.’ - Channel 4 (4Laughs)

PAUL THORNE

Paul Thorne is one of Britain’s most established and sought-after stand-ups. TV credits include: The World Stands Up, Paramount, The Stand Up Show, BBC 1 and Saturday Live, ITV (to name but a few!)

‘A MUST SEE’ The Guardian

SUS are one of the most hotly tipped bands currently on the London live music circuit. They’ll be closing the night for us. If you like The King Blues or Lily Allen chances are you’ll take a liking to these guys. They present to you an array of melodic and well crafted songs, complimented by some great harmonies. Singing about love, age, losing your virginity and the injustice of it all they’ll have you hooked within minutes. They wanna see some scuffed up shoes…so get moving.

Hey all,

Happy New Year and all that! I’m writing because I wanted to tell you about one of my new projects. It came about whilst sat drinking (too much) Peroni and watching the ridiculously talented Vikki Stone perform an awesome parody of Lily Allen at Behind The Mic in December.

After being delightfully entertained by Vikki, I was overwhelmed with the urge to start up a new night dedicated to this particular genre of comedy. It’s two of my favourite mediums merged and I must add, a welcome respite from working in a serious and troubled music industry. (I am actually inlove with the serious side to the music industry but balance is important, no?… ‘let there be spaces in your togetherness’) Anyway, a quick Google later and it transpired (much to my surprise) that there were hardly any events catering to this fantastically entertaining medium, so I asked Vikki if she was up for starting a musical comedy night with me and henceforth, The Comedy Song Club was born.

I had been looking for new venues for other projects for quite a while and one day Peter Parkers Rock’n'Roll Club popped onto my radar. It’s located at 4 Denmark Street and seems ideal. For those of you unaware, Denmark Street has forever been associated with music thus earning the nickname ‘Tin Pan Alley’ back in the 1920’s. In the early 1800’s it was renowned for selling sheet music and rent was so cheap struggling artists could afford to set up home there, come the 1890’s music publishers had moved in and by the 1960’s, recording studios and instrument shops were springing up. One of the most notable studios was The Regent Sounds Studio, which was actually established on the same site as our Comedy Song Club’s home! It was here that the Rolling Stones recorded their first album and later welcomed the likes of Stevie Wonder. Anyway, I won’t rattle on with too much history. You get the picture, this really is one of the best musical streets in Europe.

So, The Comedy Song Club at Peter Parkers, 4 Denmark Street, Soho. Expect current pop parodies, original comedy songs, comedy bands, dance sketches, improvised singing and an audience participation jam - bring your triangle for the final song!

Vikki Stone, the Jools Holland of Musical Comedy will MC the night from the piano and introduce circuit favourites such as Pippa Evans (Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Newcomer Nominee 2008), Isy Suttie (Dobby from Peep Show), Earl Okin, Rob Broderick, Jay Foreman and sometimes top secret famous types trying out new stuff - ooooh.

Launch: Monday 1st February
Peter Parkers, 4 Denmark Street, Soho, London, WC2H 8LP
Doors: 7.30pm. Showtime: 8.30pm
Entry: £7/£5
Acts included for Feb 1st - Pippa Evans, Rob Broderick, Jay Foreman, The Segue Sisters, G3 & Olly The Octopus. MC, Vikki Stone.

HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

It’s very enjoyable here, the air is fresh, the fashion is faultless and their talent abounds. Check out the video for their second single ‘What have you done to your face’ available in January 2010 on the Volvox “Twisted Cabaret” Compilation (www.volvox.com) Directed, filmed and animated by the marvellous Alex De Campi except: additional camerawork by David Duchin and awesome claymation by Anna Benner. A band to look out for.

More info…

Marcella and The Forget Me Nots is the brainchild of Marcella Puppini, founder of famous UK vocal trio The Puppini Sisters and acclaimed multi-instrumentalist and songwriter.

Marcella has a strong background both in Music and Fashion, having graduated first from Central St Martins College of Art - which led her to work at Vivienne Westwood’s studio - and subsequently from Trinity College of Music where she studied Singing and Composition.

Initially drawn to Opera, Marcella subsequently shifted towards Alternative Cabaret, which led her to creating The Puppini Sisters and then to becoming Musical Director and songwriter for The Whoopee Club - one of the pioneers and leaders of the UK Burlesque scene - as well as collaborating with Club DJs, Jazz musicians and “a variety of other musical reprobates”, as she puts it.

While recording and touring with The Puppini Sisters, who were awarded a Gold disc in the UK in 2007, Marcella founded The Forget Me Nots - an all-girl Post-Apocalyptic Cabaret orchestra with influences ranging from Kurt Weill and Jacques Brel to Baroque Opera and Prog Rock.

The 8-strong orchestra, who look and sound like the house band from a Terry Gilliam dystopian fantasy, first debuted in 2008 at The Chelsea Theatre’s Sacred Season of Performance Art -for which they created a very successful site-specific show based on stories collected from Chelsea residents.

In 2008 Marcella used The Puppini Sisters’ long touring periods to continue composing her clattery Cabaret Showtunes and quirky symphonic tales, and soon the band were appearing at London’s trendiest Underground venues, such as The Last Days of Decadence, Corsica and The Vauxhall Tavern, and at leftfield Arts festivals such as Queer Up North.

The band’s first recording was produced in May 2009 by Stephen Coates of The Real Tuesday Weld, who chose to record all the instruments in the Main Hall at The People Show Studios to create the same raw and warm sound that the band produce live.

Their debut video, Monster Mae, was the result of a collaboration with edgy American director Alex De Campi, who had previously lent her witty and quirky aesthetic to two Puppini Sisters tracks, and whose list of credits includes Amanda Palmer, The Real Tuesday Weld and Des O’Connor.

Marcella and The Forget me Nots’ first release will be in October 2009 on French record label Volvox, whose multimedia Twisted Cabaret Compilation will feature the Monster Mae video and What Have You Done To Your Face as an audio track.

As the band’s Internet fan base rapidly grows, Marcella’s songs are now being used in DJ sets at Torture Garden and on Dandelion Radio, as well as in a “Dali-esque Burlesque” Show at The National Art Gallery of Victoria Australia.

The Forget Me Nots are the coolest girl band you’re likely to set eyes on.

For our gig on October 14th I’ve hand picked a few cherries from the alt-country and folk orchard and oh how succulant they are! Details below…

Marcus Foster

http://www.myspace.com/marcusfoster

Marcus Foster is a London born musician and studies sculpture at the Royal College of Art. He grew up listening to Tom Waits, Bob Dylan and Sister Rosetta Tharp giving him a raw, honest and timeless sound. His songs are currently featured in two motion pictures; Twilight and Five Dollars a Day and he’s just returned from a tour of America. ‘Let Me Sign’ is written by Marcus Foster and Bobby Long.

The Cedars

http://www.myspace.com/theonlycedars

A UK based Alt-Americana quartet, with soaring vocals, infectious rhythms and blasts of slide guitar and banjo. Plying tales of lost love, revenge and rural homicide, The Cedars manage to straddle the divide between the dancehalls of the 20’s and 30’s and what’s going on in the scene right now.

“…this choice cut from a thoroughly juicy selection serves as a splendid introduction to a band currently at the forefront of the UK’s alt.country scene…”

Her Make Believe Band

Performing as a 4-piece band, Her Make Believe Band are renowned for their exciting and assured performances and well-crafted songs that beautifully blend their country, pop and jazz influences. Described as “sugary harmonies and classic songwriting coming together to create a truly gorgeous sound” by Rahda (MNYC at Proud Camden and Folkadot, London) and as “the best live act we’ve ever had” by Matt (Showcase 55, London) the full band version of Her Make Believe Band brims with lush guitars, vintage keyboards and stunning vocals.
