What Is SOPA Anyway? A Guide to Understanding the Online Piracy Bill

Wikipedia will black out the English language version of its website Wednesday to protest anti-piracy legislation under consideration in Congress, Jennifer Valentino-DeVries reports on digits.

It will undermine free speech and due process, says one side. It will protect America's creative class from thieves, says the other. But what's really in the Stop Online Piracy Act? A guide:

Q: What is the purpose of the bill?

A: There are actually two bills, the Stop Online Piracy Act, known as SOPA, in the House and sister legislation called the Protect IP [Intellectual Property] Act, or PIPA, in the Senate. Both are designed to tackle the problem of foreign-based websites that sell pirated movies, music and other products.

Federal law enforcement has the authority to shut down U.S.-based websites that offer pirated content, but they can't directly do the same to foreign sites like Pirate Bay. The Motion Picture Association of America, the legislation's main backer, estimates 13% of American adults have watched illegal copies of movies or TV shows online, and it says the practice has cost media companies billions of dollars.

Websites like the Huffington Post and Boing Boing as well as teenagers on Twitter each had their own take on the SOPA protests, Zach Seward reports on digits.

Q: How do the bills attempt to stop piracy?

A: The basic method is to stop U.S. companies from providing funding, advertising, links or other assistance to the foreign sites. The bills would give Justice Department prosecutors new powers to prevent pirate sites from getting U.S. visitors and funding.

Q: What are the new powers?

A: The Justice Department could seek a court order requiring U.S. Internet providers to block access to foreign pirate websites. Access could be blocked either by making it impossible for users to type a simple web address into an Internet browser to reach the site or by requiring search engines like Google to disable links to the sites.

The attorney general could also seek a court order requiring credit-card processors to stop processing payments to the sites and requiring advertising networks to stop placing ads on the sites or taking ads from the pirated websites for display elsewhere.

In addition, both bills would allow Hollywood studios and other content owners to take private legal action against websites that are alleged to be hosting pirated material.

The legislation would allow content owners to ask a court to require credit-card companies and advertising networks to stop payments to sites allegedly hosting pirated material.

Q: How does this harm free speech? A Wikipedia official said the legislation could allow for "censorship without due process."

A: Opponents of the legislation worry that the language in the House bill is so broad that it would allow content owners to target U.S. websites that aren't knowingly hosting pirated content. This has been a particular concern of bill opponents Facebook, Wikipedia and Twitter, all of which have sites that depend heavily on content uploaded by users.

In an extreme case, opponents say, media companies could get a court order blocking payments to an innocent site, with the effect of shutting it down and stripping it of its rights to free speech.

Also, they say the legislation would encourage authoritarian countries that have already been trying to block content on the Internet they don't like.

Q: What about the charge that the legislation could undermine cybersecurity efforts?

A: One of the biggest issues for Google, eBay and other Internet companies is a provision that in some instances would require "DNS blocking." The domain-name system, or DNS, is an integral part of the Internet, ensuring traffic goes where it's supposed to when users type in a Web address like www.wsj.com or www.whitehouse.gov. Those addresses are converted into the series of numbers that make up a site's Internet protocol address.

The original legislation would have required Internet providers to redirect traffic away from pirate websites by blocking the conversion system.

The problem, according to cybersecurity experts, is that such redirection is also sometimes used by hackers to deceive Internet users and commit cybercrimes.

On Saturday, the White House issued a warning that it couldn't support the legislation if it included DNS blocking because of the possible impact on cybersecurity efforts.

This issue may be resolved. Last week, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R., Texas) said he would eliminate the DNS blocking provision from the House's SOPA legislation. In addition, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D., Vt.) said he would propose changing the Senate legislation to require more study of the cybersecurity concerns before implementing DNS blocking.

Q: What's the difference between SOPA and PIPA?

A: The bills are very similar. One major difference is that the House bill includes a provision making it illegal to stream unauthorized copyrighted content.

The provision has been called the "Free Bieber" provision by the legislation's opponents in honor of teen singer Justin Bieber, who became famous after posting videos of himself performing other singers' songs on YouTube.

Q: What would have to happen for the bills to become law?

A: The House's SOPA legislation is awaiting consideration by the House Judiciary Committee, which tried unsuccessfully to complete its review of the bill in December. That effort was derailed after a bipartisan group of House members, including Rep. Darrell Issa (R., Calif.), filed dozens of amendments and used stalling tactics to prevent the bill from being considered before Congress left for the holidays. The bill's main sponsor, Rep. Smith, said Tuesday he plans to reschedule the hearing in February.

The Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously passed the PIPA legislation in May, but it has been awaiting floor action ever since. Forty senators are co-sponsoring the bill. However one opponent, Sen. Ron Wyden (D., Ore.), has vowed to filibuster the bill if Senate leaders try to move forward. On Jan. 13, six Republican senators sent Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid a letter asking him to delay floor action until concerns are resolved. However, a procedural vote is still scheduled in the Senate for Jan. 24.

In short, the legislation has several hurdles in both houses of Congress. If both houses pass the bill, President Barack Obama would have to make the choice: To sign or to veto. The White House on Tuesday reiterated that it has concerns about the legislation but agrees with proponents that more needs to be done to stop piracy.

Above Url returns a JSON object with the details.:

Executing ClientScript Before and After an Asynchronous PostBack using ASP.NET AJAX

A user recently mailed me to find out if there is a way to determine, when an asynchronous postback begins and ends in an ASP.NET AJAX page. He wanted to fire some JavaScript code during these events. Here’s how to determine the events.

During the AJAX client-side execution cycle of a page containing the ScriptManager control, the Application.init event is raised when the page is requested for the first time. We can use this event to wire up the client events that occur during an async postback. For this purpose, we use the Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager class that raises client events specific to asynchronous postbacks.

Now the beginRequest and endRequest events of the Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager class are raised before an async request and after an async response respectively. We will use these events to execute our JavaScript code as demonstrated below.

Note: I am using Visual Studio 2008 and thereby utilizing the ASP.NET AJAX plumbing that comes along with it.

Open VS 2008. Click File > New > Website. Choose ASP.NET Website from the list of installed templates, choose target platform as .NET Framework 3.5, choose the desired language and enter the location where you would like to store the website on your FileSystem. I have created a folder called VS2008 Projects, so the location over here is C:\VS2008 Projects\ ExecuteClientScriptDuringAsyncPostback. After typing the location, click OK.

Open Default.aspx. Switch to the Design mode of Default.aspx. Open the toolbox (Ctrl+Alt+X). Now add a <ScriptManager> control to the page and then an <UpdatePanel>. Inside the <UpdatePanel>, add a label and a button control as shown below

Just below the </body> tag, add the following script

As described above, we use the Application.add_init() to add the beginRequest and endRequest event handlers. To add or remove handlers for events raised by the PageRequestManager classes, use the add_eventname and remove_eventname methods of those classes.

Inside these handlers, we call our JavaScript functions beforeAsyncPostBack and afterAsyncPostBack respectively.

That’s it. Run the page. When you click on the button, just before an Asynchronous request, the beforeAsyncPostBack() gets executed.

Similarly, after an Asynchronous response, the afterAsycPostBack() gets executed.

LINQ to SQL - ‘Row not found or changed‘

This System.Data.Linq.Changeconflictexception with the message ‘Row not found or changed‘ appears to be a very annoying bug or error, but this is not the first time that i am getting this error while updating database record with Linq to SQL on ASP.NET. I tried to re-drag SQL tables from server explorer to the designer and rebuild the solution. I am still getting the ‘Row not found or changed’; there is a lack of details.

Reading on other blogs, found this from readme:
Tables with columns of type DateTime with higher precision than seconds do not update correctly. Blinq creates BoundField objects for DateTime fields that do not contain precision beyond seconds, so updates with DateTime fields with high precision that participate in optimistic concurrency fail. To fix this, do one of the following:

Change the precision displayed by the BoundField object by setting DataFormatString=”{0:o}”, HtmlEncode=false, and ApplyFormatInEditMode=true.

Designate the DateTime field as never participating in optimistic concurrency. See “Changing a Field’s Update Mode” earlier in this document to change the update mode for this column. Use this option carefully—removing this column from participating in optimistic concurrency will allow overwrites of the value to succeed even if the database’s value has been changed.

Two possible reasons of this issue may be that
- the row was changed after you've retrieved it, but before calling SubmitChanges();
- entity properties does not correspond to rows of the table (for example, if the row is nullable in the table, but is marked as not nullable in the model).

Snazzy Hover Effects Using CSS

With all these CSS3 effects and tutorials popping up every day that show all the new and wonderful things we can make happen, we sometimes forget about poor little old CSS2.1 and the great potential it still has.

With very good browser support, we can do lots of cool things that we know will work in all major browsers.

In this tutorial, I will be going over creating flexible advanced hover techniques using CSS2.1 properties.

Here is a live demonstration of the effect we will be creating.

Advanced hover states are quite simple

When I first started learning CSS, the :hover pseudo-element was no more than a way to remove the underline on a text link.

Since then, through experimentation, I have learnt that it is so much more powerful and it can create some really cool effects when used in conjunction with other CSS properties.

One of these effects is creating caption text to appear over the top of images, creating some nice visual feedback for the user and giving them some information about the image they’ve moused over or focused on.

The astute reader will see that this technique has great potential outside of what we discuss here, such as showing CSS tool tips when hovering over a hyperlink.

We’ll be using these key CSS property, pseudo-classes, and pseudo-element to accomplish our technique:

content Rather than create unnecessary mark-up to display our caption, we’ll use CSS generated content to add the caption.
:hover, :focus Lets us show/hide the caption overlay with our mouse/keyboard.
:after Used in conjunction with the content property to dynamically append our caption content and layout.

Generated content is king

CSS-generated content allows us to append (:after) or prepend (:before) content to an element that can display hard-coded content, dynamic content (attr()), images (url()) and counters (counter()).

In this example, we’ll utilise the attr() function to extract the title attribute from the anchor (<a>) tag.

As you can see from above, the mark-up is very simple and the use of the content property allows us to create some great behaviour without the bloat. All it’s doing here is getting the anchor’s title attribute value and appending the content :after the anchor.

Make it sit nice

Now that we have some simple mark-up and are now displaying our caption on hover/focus after the image, we’ll add some extra CSS to pretty up the caption and make it sit over the image, rather than beneath it.

We first do some simple styling to the containing list item. The only style required here is the relative position. Using a relative position allows us to absolutely-position elements inside the list item.

The other styles are decorative.

Adding some more styles to our :hover pseudo-class, we absolutely position the CSS-generated content and give it a height, background, line height (this is the same as the height, so we can vertically-centre the text).

We also do the same for the :focus pseudo-class so someone who can’t use a mouse still gets the full experience.

We’ll also add an outline around the image to create a nice border effect when the user focuses or hovers on it.

The reason we don’t use the border property is because outline doesn’t affect the area it "outlines", whereas border will affect the element.

We now have a simple and effective caption overlay, which has very lean mark-up and some simple CSS to create an effective technique.

Let’s extend it further

We have a simple caption overlay that works nicely, but how about we add some additional styles so we can change the position of the caption very easily by adding a couple lines of CSS?

We will create a .reverse class that we can assign to any of our anchor elements that will reposition our caption to appear at the top of the image rather than the bottom.

We can also create an .offset class to position the caption in the middle or offset it by any value. The negative margin is used to pull it into the middle.

Of course, I couldn’t resist using some CSS3 goodness to make it that little bit nicer. At this point, we’re just using the principles of Progressive Enhancement where browsers that are CSS3-capable will have a slightly better experience. Our effect will still work on CSS2-capable browsers (such as Internet Explorer) even after we’ve spruced it up with CSS3.

On the anchor I’ve added the CSS3 box-shadow property to create a nice drop shadow effect when the image is hover/focused on. The outline is set to none so that the dotted outline won’t appear when it’s focused on.

Normally this would be frowned upon, but since we are adequately showing that the image has focus by showing the caption, outlining the image and applying the drop shadow, it’s still obvious that the element in question has focus.

Note: It should be said that the box-shadow property has officially been removed from the W3C CSS3 draft specification for further discussion, however browser vendors appear to have no plans of removing it any time soon, if ever.

Using the CSS3 rgba() property, we can make the background slightly opaque so that the image can be seen beneath our caption. Setting rgb before our rgba value ensures that browsers such as IE8 still show a background.

We can also add a CSS gradient in Firefox 3.6, Safari 4 and Chrome 4. (See another tutorial on using CSS gradients on your web typography.)

In the gradient, we also use rgba so that we can have an opaque gradient that blends between two colours.

To make the caption text pop out a little more, I’ve added the text-shadow property to give it a subtle drop-shadow on the text.

Another CSS3 property that is quite useful is box-sizing, which lets us adjust how the box model works.

By adjusting the box model, the technique can further extend the caption by utilising box-sizing to our advantage, and so we can keep this technique as flexible as possible by making the overlay cover half the image and have the content run down the side.

With a few adjustments, it’s quite simple using this technique.

The box model—by default—adds padding and borders on top of the height that is set, and since we are setting our height to a 100%, this will essentially push out our overlay by a few pixels.

To change that behaviour, we utilise the CSS3 box-sizing property and set it toborder-box. This allows us to set our percentage value and have any padding and borders calculated in conjunction with our height, so as not to push it out like it naturally does.

By default box-sizing is set to content-box. IE8 obviously doesn’t support this property, however IE’s box model naturally behaves like it was set to box-sizing: border-box and therefore doesn’t need any special treatment to work.

Mozilla and WebKit based browsers require their specific prefixes, whereas Opera supports it without any need for a prefix.

With a small addition to our original reverse class, adding right: 0, we can create some reusable CSS to reverse it either horizontally or vertically without affecting either of the anchors that have the .reverse class. Depending on the caption type— horizontal or vertical—the .reverse class will handle either situation correctly.

It wouldn’t be CSS if IE didn’t do something funky

Of course, IE8—ironically, the first IE browser to support the full CSS2.1 spec—has got an issue with generated content.

Upon initial testing, I thought IE8 didn’t actually support generated content as when I hovered over the image, nothing was showing up.

After some testing and using a text colour that contrasted with the image, I noticed that the background colour wasn’t showing up, but the text was.

So then, I thought at least it still works, just not with a background. Not content with that, I investigated further and discovered that the background colour was appearing behind the image. Don’t ask me how or why this is happening.

I came up with a solution that fixes this issue and allows the CSS-generated content and its background to appear over the image like it does in the other browsers.

Basically, we give the image a relative position and set the z-index to -1 to force it under the generated content.

We then have to reset the position back to static for the better browsers as position relative causes havoc with the caption overlay. I utilised the CSS3 not() pseudo-selector—which IE8 doesn’t support—and set the position back to its default behaviour of static.

Putting it all together

Let’s put it all together into a fully working version.

Here’s the full markup required to create a single image with caption overlays. The demo page has more images on it, as well as demonstrating changing colours and shifting the overlaying caption into different positions as explained earlier in the article, just to show various potential tweaks and use cases.

Wrap up

We now have a simple technique that’s very capable using only CSS2.1. Of course, I also showed how to spruce it up with some additional—but not critical—CSS3 to make it a little nicer in more modern browsers.

We have good browser support; it works in all the latest release browsers.

And we made sure the technique was keyboard-accessible so that if you don’t or can’t use a mouse, the technique still works.

Perkara dan Elemen Penting Dalam Proposal Laman Web

Contoh proposal cetakan perlu menyatakan dengan jelas proses-proses percetakan yang akan dilakukan. Dalam proposal untuk laman web, seharusnya menyatakan elemen-elemen berkaitan dengan pengehosan web, sistem yang akan digunakan untuk menguruskan kandungan, aplikasi yang dibangunkan dan jenis bahasa pengaturcaraan yang digunakan serta beberapa perkara teknikal yang difikirkan sesuai.

Garis panduan kandungan laman

Satu proposal laman web perlu menyatakan dengan jelas bahan-bahan yang akan terkandung pada laman web nanti. Ini boleh diterangkan dengan satu piawai atau garis panduan mengenai kandungan sama ada secara teks atau visual berkaitan dengan seksyen, bahagian dan fungsi yang akan diterapkan ke dalamnya.

Garis panduan kandungan ini akan menjaga kedua-dua belah pihak iaitu bagi pihak pelanggan mereka mendapat apa yang dihajati dan disebelah anda sebagai pembangun tidak akan melalui proses pengubahsuaian atau penambahan diluar daripada perancangan. Dengan panduan sebegini, membolehkan anda bekerja berdasarkan kepada persetujuan yang dimenterai melalui kontrak dan membolehkan ianya dijalankan dengan lebih lancar berdasarkan kepada jumlah kos pembinaan yang serta penambahan bayaran seandainya terdapat permintaan tambahan.

Jenis atau bentuk pembinaan laman

Adalah penting dan perlu dinyatakan bentuk pembinaan laman yang akan anda jalankan dalam proposal tersebut. Sesetengah laman yang dibina menggunakan bahasa pengaturcaraan HTML yang statik akan dibangunkan secara manual untuk setiap perkara. Ini termasuklah setiap halaman dan kemas kini kandungan. Contoh laman yang lain, yang menggunakan HTML tetapi dibangunkan dengan sistem pengurusan kandungan (CMS), yang mana menggunakan pangkalan data bagi menyimpan maklumat-maklumat serta kandungan laman. Penggunaan CMS contohnya Drupal, adalah percuma tetapi proses susun galur, modifikasi dan pengubahsuaian sistem secara khas (custom) merupakan perkhidmatan yang menjanjikan satu kelainan berbanding laman web yang lain. Anda juga boleh bangunkan laman web berasaskan kepada Flash yang menawarkan persembahan kandungan menerusi interaktif multimedia namun menuntut tempoh masa yang lebih lama. Walau apa pun bentuk dan jenis pembinaan laman, ianya harus dinyatakan pilihannya dan perlu dijelaskan dalam proposal agar mendapat persetujuan daripada kedua-dua belah pihak.

Pengehosan

Jangan tertinggal untuk menyatakan bentuk dan jenis pengehosan yang akan digunakan. Pihak pelanggan perlu mengetahui bahawa jenis pengehosan yang disediakan mampu untuk menampung sistem yang bakal dibangunkan dan digunakan oleh mereka. Anda perlu menitik berat perkara seperti bilangan trafik yang datang serta ruangan storan penyimpanan maklumat yang cukup untuk satu tempoh jangka waktu tertentu. Nyatakan bersama kos penyelenggaraan dan langganan yang akan dirangkumi oleh penghosan ini.

Penyelenggaraan

Setelah laman tersebut siap dibina dan dilancarkan sepenuhnya, ianya perlu diselenggara. Penyelenggaraan mungkin merangkumi beberapa aspek penting seperti perkara-perkara yang melibatkan hal teknikal dan tingkat upaya pengehosan web sekiranya perlu selain kemas kini kandungan dan reka bentuk laman. Ke semua ini perlu dinyatakan dengan jelas dalam proposal yang menyentuh perihal berkaitan tempoh, masa dan kos yang akan ditanggung. Bagi yang menggunakan CMS, nyatakan bahagian yang perlu dijalankan sendiri oleh pelanggan dan bahagian yang akan diselenggara oleh anda. Kos penyelenggaraan untuk CMS selalunya dikira berdasarkan kepada jumlah jam kerja yang anda laksanakan. Ini bagi memberi keyakinan kepada pelanggan bahawa laman mereka berada dalam keadaan dan situasi yang paling terkini.

Tempoh tamat

Kebanyakan pembangun gemar untuk melakukan kerja-kerja di saat-saat akhir. Sungguhpun mereka menyedari bahawa pembangunan laman web akan melalui beberapa kitaran, perubahan dan persetujuan daripada kedua-dua belah pihak. Pelanggan akan sentiasa melihat dan mengikuti peratusan perkembangan laman dari semasa ke semasa. Dengan mengambil kira projek tertentu, anda perlu menyatakan tempoh tamat dan batu aras proses pembangunan.

Anggaran

Setelah anda menyatakan dengan lengkap dalam penulisan berkenaan perancangan pembangunan laman, tempoh masa yang akan diambil, pengehosan dan penyelenggaraan, anggaran kos pembangunan seterusnya perlu dinyatakan. Hal ini mungkin boleh berbincang secara kasar dengan pihak pelanggan berkaitan dengan jumlah perbelanjaan yang sanggup dikeluarkan. Dengan ini, anda boleh merancang pembangunan yang akan dilakukan berdasarkan kepada jumlah bayaran suapay tidak tersasar terlalu jauh dan bukan sekadar menghantar satu nilai yang tidak mungkin dapat ditampung oleh pihak pelanggan.

Persetujuan melalui kontrak

Setelah proposal dipersetujui oleh pihak pelanggan, tibalah masanya untuk proses tanda tangan kontrak. Kontrak merupakan persetujuan antara kedua-dua belah pihak untuk projek yang bakal dijalankan dengan kos yang akan dibayar. Kontrak perlu menyatakan jadual pembayaran serta perkara-perkara yang berkaitan dengan perundangan bagi pengesahan sekiranya berlaku perkara-perkara berbangkit.
