Travel Back in Time

From the minute you set foot on the grounds of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park in North Florida, you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. It’s a wonderful place to spend a relaxing afternoon. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings is best known for writing The Yearling. From the Florida State Parks website: “Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings came to rural Cross Creek in 1928 to find a home and a place to write. “I do not know how any one can live without some small place of enchantment to turn to,” she later wrote in Cross Creek. Rawlings found that place on her small Florida farmstead and orange grove, and in the nearby wilderness bordered by lakes and Cross Creek.”

It’s neat to see where she spent a lot of her time writing…

Pursuing the Dream, Missing Home

I moved to California (from Florida) 13 years ago to follow my dreams and I’m still going after them. There is no overnight success, that I’ve seen anyway – I know this now. When I moved out here right out of college I had NO idea how long things might take. Every time I think it’s just too hard to keep pursuing the dream, mainly because I miss home so much, something keeps me from stopping, some feeling that I can’t ignore. My dream path has weaved in and out all kinds of crazy directions, none of them planned or expected, just the result of taking step after step each day. I moved to Los Angeles for the entertainment industry – to act in comedy! So far I’ve performed hundreds of hours on stages out here in LA from The Second City to Groundlings to IO and more, taken tons of writing classes, produced and performed in many sketch shows, had some bit parts here and there, entertained as characters at birthday parties, worked as a hostess at a happening Beverly Hills restaurant when I first moved here (UGH! – a few months was plenty), been a balloon artist at a restaurant (hilarious!), been a Producer in TV on and off for the past 10 years, Produced/Wrote/Performed in a bunch of Sendables for JibJab based on characters from a two person show I did with my husband (you can see a couple here and here), and now producing a few webseries for BermanBraun as part of the YouTube Initiative. You can see one of my characters here, more to come soon. I’m getting ready to launch a site that features even more of my characters. I don’t talk about this very much and a lot of people outside of my friends here in LA have been surprised to know that’s another thing I’m doing out here. So now I’ve said it, out loud. It is one of my dreams to be a working actress in comedy. Sometimes it’s hard to say our dreams out loud. Right? And for the past 15 years I’ve also been studying photography because I LOVE it and finally decided to start doing it professionally over 5 years ago. Photography and Comedy are my two passions for sure…I love them equally. I’m happy with how far photography has come along and I could do that from anywhere in the world. So what keeps me out here? Comedy and the pursuit of having a career doing it. All this to say the one thing that is the hardest every day is how much I miss my family. They are all back in Florida. So here I am, the entire country between me and my family, chasing my dreams. On Mother’s Day this year my Mom said “I wish we could just fold the country in half, like a map, and you’d be right next door”. I feel this way every single day. The portrait below made me think of all these things today, the sacrifices made to pursue a dream. It’s a portrait I took of my Grandma in her garden picking corn, years ago when I was still shooting on film, before digital. This image reminds me so much of my family and my childhood. There were always lots of fresh vegetables, huge farms, beautiful gardens and fields, lots of open space and TREES. I miss it all. I love my family so much.

And just what was it a picture of? It’s a muffin tin full of different paints. You can see the wider view below to really get the whole picture. These images were taken during a recent Publicity Portrait session with Melissa Renzi of Said the Butterfly. She uses these tins to hold paint while she works. I always like to mix things up during a shoot and get creative…so when I saw this paint tin (after capturing the wide and medium shots) I thought it might be cool to do an extreme closeup. I just love the closeup that I used for this contest. I’m having it made into a large canvas for my home…it’s art within art…Melissa’s art within my photo. Neat!

This was session for the littlest one’s first birthday! Cute, Cute, Cute! KITTENS!!! and Keeping things Simple

I love kittens! Just LOVE them. LOVE! The sweet faces in this post were just a few weeks old at the time I took these pictures. I was home visiting family in Florida and these little darlings were running all over the place. They were completely content playing chase with each other, stopping every once in a while for some milk and then sleeping. So simple.

I woke up this morning and was hoping for a simple day with lots of quiet, peaceful moments. I kept thinking what will make this day sweet and simple? KITTENS! Haha! Since I don’t have any cats/kittens – the next best thing – Kitten Portraits! Yes, most of the time I focus on photographing people. But ahhhhh kittens! Adorable! They deserve to have their picture taken too.

If you’re having a LONNNGGGGG day…just think KITTENS!!!

Serenity, Flowers and a lotta Love

One of the most beautiful, peaceful places I’ve visited in Los Angeles is the Exposition Park Rose Garden. I went there for the first time recently thanks to my dear friends Chris and Rachel. They wanted to do their engagement portraits in this park and I’m so thankful to now know about this hidden gem. If you want to spend an afternoon in a peaceful, beautiful place then you must visit the Rose Garden. And definitely bring your camera, there are so many gorgeous flowers. Congratulations to Chris and Rachel on your upcoming wedding. I look forward to photographing your special day.

I had a portrait session at the beach yesterday with a family I adore. I feel so fortunate to work with families year after year capturing lots of milestone moments. The portrait below is for this little guy’s one year session. He recently started walking so it was the perfect time to capture him in action. I love the look on his face – he was just taking it all in, exploring the park and the beach, a day of wonder. Can’t wait to share more soon…
