I’m a writer. A fiction writer. Blogging is . . . not fiction, generally speaking. It’s not my thing. Especially the fact that to make a blog sing, it needs to be current, active, and constantly updated in a regular fashion.

You see, I have this reservoir filled with creative lemonade. And I can use that lemonade like fuel to write blogs or novels or short stories or personal letters or whatever else gets me excited. But every day the reservoir has a limited supply of lemonade. It gets filled up periodically, but it is not eternally full. So when I use some of the lemonade to write a blog, there is less available for a personal letter or a short story.

I’ve decided to use the lemonade for things  which I feel best equipped to write, the things I do best. Those things are not this blog.

However! I plan to write a short and pithy newsletter, only sent out when there’s something to say – I promise! Probably only a couple times per year. It might include a short story, a rumination, or news about my next book. It will NOT say nothing just for the sake of saying something.

Imagine the sounds in this photo. I think the temperature must be around fifty degrees (F). Dying sun reflects off flaming trees as it sinks toward the horizon behind us. A cup of hot cider sounds just about perfect right now.

It almost looks like you could walk behind the water of the lower falls in this photo. What do you suppose you’d find there? Would you try it?

Water is so beautiful. We celebrate it here on Wednesdays. I especially love the long photographic shot with light reflecting on a lake or an ocean. Today we have water with light reflecting off . . . teeny tiny droplets of water on a spider web. They almost look like pearls.

I’m not a spider person. But this photo definitely makes me thankful for those stunning webs! Have you seen something creepy transformed into something beautiful?

Beautiful Lake Michigan here. You can see land on either side: Harbor Springs is on the left and Petoskey is on the right.

What’s in a wake? Whether we travel under sail or on a different boat housing engines with 800+ horses, the wake shows you how far you’ve come, the path you’ve travelled, how fast you moved, and how beautiful water can be when it’s moving.

The wake is what you leave behind . . . what’s in your wake?

This coast guard rescue boat is FORTY-SEVEN feet long! Water is an amazingly powerful force, and when man’s best efforts are juxtaposed against it, somehow the boat comes out looking like a child’s toy. I love that big water can make a person feel small. It’s good for the soul.

If you were on this boat, would you be having the time of your life or hanging on for dear life?

Water has a unique ability to magnify all available light. I’m partial to sunsets on the water, personally. Imagine this shot with the same sky over a green field. Or a brown field. Not cutting it, right?

Water transforms light, multiplying all its properties into something extraordinary. More than the sum of its parts. What do you think the person piloting that boat must be saying to himself in this photo? What does the air feel like? (answer in comments!)

Wouldn’t this be a wondrous find if you just happened to be hiking through the forest? There’s nothing like the sound of moving water. Look at the photo and just imagine the gorgeous music this water is making.

This water is 16 feet deep!

Emily Wolfgang sent me this photo. The water is in a cove off Round Island which is right beside Mackinac Island in Lake Huron. Look at the clarity of the water – the anchor lies beneath 16 feet of water!!! I consider this lake my old “stompin’ grounds.” But a lake is not technically ground, so let’s just say I grew up boating on Lake Huron. Emily mentioned that most of her fond memories take place near some sort of water and in Michigan you’re never too far from a lake.

I love the water. It can be beautiful and terrifying and  mysterious, but somehow, it always soothes my soul. So here’s one of my favorite lakes at sunset. A very slight breeze out of the South for texture.
